Excellent video. I just took off my water pump on my small block Chevy (replacing the timing chain). The water pump is probably due for a rebuild. I'll try to do this with your guidance.
Thanks for showing us how to rebuild our water pumps, it was interesting. Yet again if you could show more close-ups of the unit (job) itself it would be appreciated.
Thank you. We hope these videos help anyone out who is working on a Cadillac. And thanks for the feedback. We will try to get more close-ups in future videos.
Water from the weep hole means that the seal in the water pump is bad or was installed incorrectly. It could also be caused by roughness or pitting on the sealing surface in the pump. If it is a pump you purchased rebuilt, then it is defective. If you rebuilt it, then you will need to take it apart and check your work. Josh
@@Caddydaddy Hey man, you have some really good stuff going on, I watched and liked your starter rebuild also. One thing I want to know, where do you source your parts from? Looking for a water pump kit for SBC's has left me coming up empty.
A smaller, inexpensive press could easily do this job. A piece of pipe or possibly a deep socket could be used, instead of the tool I turned on my lathe. I had nothing but basic hand tools when I was 16 with a WWII Army jeep. I always found a way to get the job done right with some thinking and cleverness, despite the tools I lacked. Josh
Very useful presentation, but a few questions left unanswered in my case (1956 Cadillac): -- The video shows the central "neck" of the impeller having already been cut to the correct length (at the seal surface side marked with blue ink). Do I need a lathe to do it? -- There is a brass ring in the kit, perfectly ajusted with the inside diameter of the compression seal. Is it where it belongs? -- Is the front sealing of the compression seal just done by a perfect contact of its ceramic surface with the pump housing matching surface? Pretty challenging, isn't it? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
All parts should be ready to install, no machine work is necessary on the parts, but the housing sealing surface might need cleaning up.The brass washer does belong on the seal assembly, it is where the impeller bears on the seal to apply pressure. The ceramic side seals against the housing, and the bearing surface might need to be refaced to seal properly. Cadillac had a tool for this job, J-1543-A. Josh
Thanks for doing this. One question. Why not clean up the housing while it is apart? Soaking it in Evaporust leaves a foundry fresh casting ready to paint,
Hi Josh, thanks for this video, well explained I’m Paul from France and im rebuilding a 62 Cadillac at the time, I was happy about finishing the engine rebuild but by putting the water coolant in the radiator, all the water came out by the vent hole of the water pump What could I have done wrong ? What part is in fault ? Would love to have your help, thank you 🙏🏼

It might sound strange, but I don't. When iron oxidizes, it expands, and the oxide fills any small gaps preventing the penetrating oil from penetrating, The best method if possible is to heat the part. This will expand it, giving a little space for things to come apart and maybe then a little penetrating oil can make it's way in. Once a bolt or screw is moving a bit, then lubrication helps as you work it back and forth, breaking free the rust and clearing the threads. This is why a torch or an inductive heater are the go-to methods for professional mechanics. Josh
This happy music makes me want to rebuild a water pump. Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it. Josh

I used a combo of a small three arm puller arms with a two arm puller both from AutoZone worked really easy to pull the impeller off!

Simply because of time constraints when filming. The housing should be
cleaned up and painted, but we didn't have the time. Josh

Great topic to show and thanks for doing it. Are the pumps for a '63 rebuildable? I still have my original.
What is the torque for pump to block bolts, if it's not too much to ask?? 🙏
@@trickster6831 For the 331 series it is 25-29 ft/lb. The cover is 10-15 ft/lb

@@Caddydaddy Thank you Sir. 🙏
Great video. The press seems vital to the whole operation. Cost for such a machine?
A small press can be purchased for under $100.

What is the torque on the cover plate bolts ?
10 to 15 ft/lbs

You don't believe in penetrating oil? Also I doubt most people have access to a hydraulic press.
