- In this video, I paddle out to a secret island with my faithful dog Maggie in my homemade cedar strip canoe. We spend the morning cooking and enjoying a delicious rabbit stew with wild foraged blackberries and nettles - absolute bliss! Don't forget to check out my Facebook and Instagram pages if you haven't already done so. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
"He very kindly shot it"
Choked on my drink at that phrase. Love the video as always Simon
Hahaha. 👍👍
Re-watched this video today, and chuckled at this moment 😁, it's a classic!
Well this has brightened up a really boring night at the Travelodge while I’m working away. Dreaming of getting out into the countryside now 😊 Enjoyed that Simon, thanks for sharing
Glad it helped Alex! Thanks mate! 😁
The trAvel lodge sounds good right about one
@@lucianbodie2212 did you see messages between her and her fuck boi
Another fantastic video from the archive. Melts my heart to see Maggie x
A good dog: She loves your cooking but doesn't beg.
Maggggggiiiiiieeeeeee!! Laughing my butt off watching her eyes go from the rabbit, to you, to the rabbit, to you. LOL
As to the gasifier stove commentary, you are one of the few people that as ever spoken about packing the stove well vertically and doing a top fire ignition. I saw UA-cam video where a guy showed this very well, and he got an excellent burn from it, without repacking every 37 seconds, without constant attention, etc. Cheers.
Cheers Ray! She looked quite expectant didn’t she, her patience astounds me sometimes!! The vertical stick stacking/fire on top is my next method to try - I’ve a feeling it’ll be better than the pellets but perhaps not burn for so long, we’ll see! Atb and thanks! Simon
@@simonablokeinthewoods , i wonder that the pellets are too close together and don't allow enough oxygen to mix in to burn well, your oxygen issues notwithstanding.

Maggies face as you talked through the ingredients was just brilliant!!😄
Can't tell who enjoys your cooking more you or Maggie.
Maggieeeee looking good 💕 as for the rabbit - yummy, our national dish 😋 xx
Please can you create a playlist of videos featuring Maggie? Videos featuring her are fantastic as it combines my love of your videos and my puppy's love of watching dogs on the TV!
There are a lot of people on here with very nice carbon fiber canoes but there is a lot to be said for an old school wooden boat. You have a handsome boat!
Thanks Barry! 😁👍🛶
Your cooking is my happy place
Lovely that you shared it with Maggie too. . She loved it
Really like your adventures when I myself can't always get into the woods. Always a pleasure seeing Maggie's reactions to the food and the environment
it's too easy to dismiss stuff about nature as fluffy, nowadays it's radical to b e outdoors. long live Simon, a bloke in the woods!
You give Maggie a wonderful life. It's lovely to see the love you share xx
Wonderful,I love seeing Maggi...I must try blackberry with meat I've never thought of that.
I loved the way Maggie looked up when you mentioned sausages... as always great video, cheers Simon
Don’t know what scene was better- Maggie eating her stew, the shot of your beautiful canoe, or your finished stew. All beautiful.
Thanks for sharing.
Loved this video, thank you. The opinel worked like a charm ! Well done mate, cheers!
Such a lovely dog. Makes me miss my dog buddy.
What a fabulous inspiring video. Thank you for creating and sharing
Another lovely video. I have never successfully cooked rabbit, maybe I will give it another go.
I am amazed you said the wood cat-litter was ok as cat-litter. About 30 years ago when I had 2 new kittens that were supposed to be house trained and I decided to try the wood litter (maybe a different formula but looks the same) both cats refused to use litter tray and weed next to the litter tray. Eventually I sussed that the reason they did it was when weeing, the urine soaked into litter, expanded and made it very uncomfortable for kittens with little legs. Dumped that stuff in favour of clay type litter and all was well. Looking at your comments at the end of video I can't help thinking that wood pellets are totally useless!
Great video. When you mentioned rabbit being tough you've had in the past I think it is because the rabbit we get here can be old as usually shot and have no idea of age when I was in Malta rabbits are bred to eat and it was always tender and amazingly tasty. In ww2 there was no meat in Malta and rabbits were dropped of for troops to eat and became a national dish shallow fried in garlic, white wine then chicken stock tastes amazing.
That sounds delicious! 😋
It is amazing I eat a lot of it when I visit Malta.
Would make excellent camp food as its so easy.
Brilliant video Simon. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Atb, Simon
So wonderful to see Maggie out with you on this canoeing adventure. That stew sure looked yummy.
Thanks! It was a nice day, been a while since it was just Maggie and I out for a paddle - she seemed more relaxed in the canoe than last time. Atb, Simon
Lovely, great video!
Terrific day for you and Maggie! Thanks for sharing the cooking and stove info. Interesting options with that stove; I enjoyed learning about the stove, and loved watching Maggie. As always it was great to see you in the canoe on a river. Hope it was as much fun for you as it was to watch. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Carl! Yes, we had a lovely day out - a nice paddle on the river followed by some good grub, hard to beat that! Atb, Simon
Maggie is a huge dog I’ve always wanted a Newfoundlander there beautiful dogs
Great video Simon
As always
Maggie is a doll!
Great little spot for a tasty meal and relaxing.
Cheers Abe, it certainly is! I used to take my kids there for camps when they were little, great spot! Atb, Simon
Rabbit and bramble stew!!!!! hummmmmmm, nice
Cheers Mike! It was a fine tasting stew! Bunny and bramble! Atb, Simon
Great video Simon, nice bit of info about the gas stove at the end 👍😁
Maggie seems very well behaved,
Looks delicious! Great day out with the dog!
Cheers Doug! It was pretty good (except the spuds - they were a fail haha!) Atb, Simon
Nice one, Simon. I love rabbit stew, great bit of scoff. Thanks for sharing, take care.
Me too matey, very underrated meat! Got to be better than shop bought, farmed meat hasn’t it? Oh, but there’s steak......theory smashed! Cheers Andy!
Class! Loved it!! Just got myself a German pup tent, quite roomy 👍
Cheers! They are good tents so I’m told! I should get one for Maggie haha! Atb, Simon
Great video enjoyed the video like the wood gas stove love Maggie she is a great Star
Cheers Andrew! She is a star isn’t she! Atb, Simon
Another great wee video 😎
Another great video Simon. Always look forward to your videos. 👍👍👍
Thanks Daren! Atb, Simon
Hi Simon loved the video, and the christmas lunch vids, cheers blue.
Great Vid pal. Opinels and Zebra billys just rock. Bushcraft doesn't need to be expensive
Looks great. I can almost take it from here. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers! It tasted as good as it looked! Atb, Simon
Hi Simon. That stew looked the business, I would never have thought of adding blackberries and nettles, yummy! Thanks again for sharing mate. Take care. Steve. 👍👍
Cheers Steve! It was really tasty! The blackberries made it! Atb, Simon
Well done on another great video. I was waiting for Mags to jump out at the swans but she was great.
You really do go to some beautiful places!!! Love your videos, and look forward to the next instalment!!! All the best!!! 😎
Cheers! I’m very lucky to have some lovely spots very close to home, be it water or woodland. I count my blessings every single day! Atb, Simon
Beautiful boat and dog. The stew looked tasty. All in all the video was a cracking success. Always enjoy watching and learning from a master. Be safe and well
Aaah, an idyll _and_ proper scran. Super!
Great video and well done Maggie!
Thanks Andrew! She did well didn’t she!! Atb, Simon
Just as a cowboy of Wild west America. Make some delicious food. Eat and then relax with Hat on face. And with a loyal friend like Maggie 😀
Wood Gas Stove , awesome .
Cimbrer Bushcraft uses a wood gas stove which he always preloads with wood thats about thumb size and put timber on top for a burn down fire seem to work very well, good interesting vid as always Simon. another jealous watcher. Thanks Steve
Hahaha - cheers mate! The vertical, tightly packed method seems to be a winner amongst people who have used these things for awhile - I’m going to try it that way next! Thanks! Simon
You made a good job of that canoe, great vids 👍
Thanks David! My pride and joy!
Looks like a great day. The wood pellets would make sense especially for those of us in the desert where there is little firewood & we are strongly discouraged from burning it. Yes, a bit of fruit in savoury dishes makes an extra layer of flavor & nutrition. Nice recipe.
Charcoal is another option when resources are scarce - light to carry too! 👍🔥
@@simonablokeinthewoods good point. Thank you.
Brilliant video well done 👍🏻
Thanks Danny! Atb, Simon
Another enjoyable video. I’m think you put out some great content and looking forward to some more.
Thanks Kenneth. 👍
As always Simon a superb film. The rabbit stew looked really delicious and quite clearly Maggie thought so to. Cheers Simon and I’m awaiting your next adventure with Maggie. 🛶
Thanks Mike! It was very tasty! I do enjoy a bunny! Atb, Simon
Great to see Mags out and about again , thought for a seconds she would be after those swans ! Hope your well mate.
Love your channel Simon, thanks for sharing. The nettles don't bring much in flavour but they have more iron than spinach and tonnes of vitamins so always worth throwing in. I've made a few nettle soups before but impossible to do in the bush as you need a blender.
Cheers James! Natures superfood! I too love nettle soup. a hand cranked ultralight collapsible bush blender is what we need! Atb, Simon
Enjoyable and quality video again, many thanks. We have started to raise rabbits here for food, we limit the young ones exercise so the meat is better, the more exercise they get the tougher the meat is. Our dogs love rabbit as well preferring it to chicken, we have also saved the pelts which we will try to work/tan when we have time later.
It was common practice not that many years ago to keep rabbits for food, I remember my grandfather had a hutch or two! Good luck with the tanning! Atb,Simon
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
Great trip there Simon! That looks to be that same secret island that you guys camped on in your last video. Thanks for sharing!
Well spotted! Yes, it is the same place, so ‘rabbit stew island’ could be in the running for the naming along with ‘beef stew island’ and ‘spam island’ hahaha
@@simonablokeinthewoods Looks like your "Island Getaway" to me. Everyone needs a "Secret Retreat" to go to for a recharge. Keep up the great work. I need to work on my channel and do me an intro.
Hi Simon,
I’m a dog lover and a outdoor lover too. I recommend off amazon a sweetie hands free dog lead. I use them with my Labradors. So when your carry things you can put on the hands free lead, but still have her attached to you.
That sounds like a good idea Daniel! The lead I use (a homemade job) has a plastic snap buckle that I can use to attach her to my belt etc, but I’ll look at those purpose made leads- thank you!
Never cooked blackberry with meats , but like blackberry raw or with fried meats . Tender venison fried , hot biscuits, fried potatoes and muskadine jelly is a favorite with me
Well you pronounce Saucisson Sec like a real french ! Nice !
I recently tried the same fuel in my woodgas stove and had the same thoughts. I've made a small basket from an old seive but I haven't tested it as yet. My dog would be a nightmare in a canoe I'd have to strap her in lol. Thanks for sharing a lovely day out.
Cheers! Yes, a sieve type insert was exactly what I was thinking! Hopefully it’ll improve things.
Haha, I do have to keep Maggie on her lead and head collar, with the lead draped over the thwart for easy reach just in case!! Atb,Simon
That looked mint pal I love rabbit stew never made one out side but thing it's going to happen now cheers for sharing 🖐🖐
Thanks - it was really good! Something about cooking outdoors always makes it taste better too! Atb Simon
Another great videos Simon. I did venison and blackberry stew recently, they do go very well with game.
Cheers Roger! Good to know they go well with venison too, thanks! Atb, Simon
Thanks for this video. You basically did what I prefer to do - get out, have a bite, relax ... while messing about with various skills.
Thanks Wynne, no better way to spend a few hours is there! Atb, Simon
Good video. I've been struggling to think of something different to eat on a wild camp. This is my next meal ⛺⛺⛺⛺⛺
That stew looked very tasty never thought of blackberries in a rabbit stew mmmm love ya canoe and a great video Simon atvb jimmy 😎 😎
Cheers Jimmy! It goes really well together (in my opinion, but then again, I like jam and marmite sandwiches too haha!) Atb mate, Simon
Really enjoyed this video Simon! Love your canoe, it's amazing. Maggie is just so adorable. Atb Pops
Cheers Pops! She’s a good girl, for a daft bundle of fluff! Atb, Simon
I always use pellets in my wood stoves (5), also in my Biolite. The mods that you mentioned will improve things. Love the dog.
Cheers Chris, hopefully they will - it’s not often that I’ll want to carry the pellets in as fuel, but there will be times when it’s convenient - hopefully a sort of mesh cage will keep the air moving a bit. Atb, Simon
I had to watch this video when I saw it was Rabbit, as my dad used to raise New Zealand whites for food. We ate a lot of Rabbit! LOL.. Enjoyed your outdoor trip with Maggie, cheers!
Thank you Chris - I really like rabbit as a meat - it’s gone out of fashion as a food which is a shame - mind you, more for us!! Cheers, Simon
Saucisson sec! I await a gourmet meal from a knowledgeable cook. Blackberries, too! I am an avocational home cook with vast experience in expensive restaurants, spanning decades. This will be a first-time exposure to this fine dish! "Knorr" did I know about the 'Stockpot' product. All that and the wonderful outdoors as well! The tips on the cat litter fuel are OUTSTANDING. Your stove fix is one the manufacturer could consider.
Hahaha - my wife gave me a very strange look when I told her I was going to cook rabbit with blackberries - but then, she’s a vegetarian, so what does she know, eh? You’ve solved my quandary about the silent ‘K’ too! Thank you!! Atb, Simon
wooowww love it simon atlast u bring puppy🐕😍♥️
Yes, I thought it was about time she came out for a paddle! Cheers, Simon
Love it, glad you convinced me to retry my wood gas stove
Haha - cheers Carl! How are you getting on with it now? Atb mate, Simon
@@simonablokeinthewoods much better, but Wednesday and Thursday camp will truly show.
Wonderful way to spend the day! I've never had rabbit, but your stew looked yummy. And your canoe is absolutely beautiful... truly a work of art. And well done Maggie! lol Cheers! :)
Thank you! It was a lovely day, the stew was as good as it looked! Rabbit is a nice meat, very underrated in my opinion. Take care, Simon
That was a great cookout! Sounds like you were expecting Maggy to take you for a swim lol. My dogs get excited as well cause they hunt so I sometimes have to get mad at them to stay put, the muskrats are the worst for my dogs cause they will swim right up to the canoe.
Another great vid Simon👍
Thank you! Yes, it can get a bit dodgy sometimes! It’s not the jumping out that’s the problem, it’s the trying to get her back in haha! Cheers, Simon
I am jealous of your island getaway Simon.. food looked top notch.. easy on the pepper though ;) haha
Haha - damned slippery peppery stuff! That was the island we paddled past - somebody had been on there recently and cleared a nice sized spot of nettles! Cheers mate!
I thought so.. maybe ill see it one day ;) haha
Definitely matey! From this point of the year until late spring it’s at its best, nettles die down, river vegetation recedes, water level picks up a bit and the berries are out! Any time buddy!!
Thanks mate :) we'll have to do a proper bushcraft camp... and no bloody pollen haha
Another entertaining and informative video. Deeply into/almost the end of raspberries both red and black, blackberries and elderberries here (Colorado), earlier than usual by a week. Cottonwood trees on the plains and aspens up in the hills over 9000 feet are just beginning to turn. Autumn is on its way.
Cheers Gary, yes, it’s starting to get just a hint of a feel of autumn here too, the leaves aren’t turning yet, but the days are getting shorter and there is a dampness and a chill in the early morning. I do love autumn! Atb, Simon
Best season, by far.
Looks great simon ill have to try that. When i load my firebox stove i put a bit of a branch or a bottle or tube ( whatever i have a hand ) the fill up the stove then slowly pull the branch out. Making it into a sort of Swedish fire stove, Most of the time it never collapses in on itself. I hope this helps keep up thd great work
That is a really good idea! A super-hack! I’m going to try that out, cheers! Simon
Another fine video... Tweaking is half the fun... I'm thinking of taking a bit of string and making a tight little bundle the diameter of the burner I made after watching your video on diy stoves. In about 2 years 6 months (or sooner) I retire. Then I'm going to live this stuff. I may get my own maggie if the wife won't come along... :)
Good idea - you could then carry a few bundles ready to go!
Not long to go then - I can’t wait to retire hahaha - I’ve got awhile to go yet 😞
Hi Simon
That’s a recipe worthy of celebrity master chef ...I’ve eaten 100’s of rabbits in various sauces etc but never blackberries ‘ I will give it a bash though, I will be trying some wild haggis in a couple of weeks ..recipe to follow... another very enjoyable video dude
The commercial wood gasifier/twig stove we purchased for testing came with several extra pieces. There is a small, round grill with folding handle. It is good for one burger, a small steak, chop etc. Also included is a pan to protect the ground as live coals and ash fall through the burner and a small pan for burning alternate fuels. In addition to wood, we have used liquid alcohol (spirits in many parts of the world), fuel tabs, gelled alcohol and cans of Sterno type gelled alcohol meant for emergency stoves and chaffing dishes. We have even placed our Trangia spirit burner inside this stove in windy conditions and it worked very well. A simple change in how you configure the stove makes the unit very flexible. No need to carry a wind screen as the stove casing acts as your wind screen. Great combination for apartment/condo dwellers for emergency use during a power outage. The sill of an open window (non-flammable masonry) or small space on a veranda and you are good to go. The only thing we would NOT do with this unit is grill food directly over fuel tabs or gelled alcohol as they give off a slight unpleasant odor. A trip to a local pack or wooded area should supply you with all the renewable fuel you could ever need.
Love Maggie.......
YUM!!!
Another great video. With wood gas stoves it looks like the wood gas is coming up the sides and in through the holes, but it's actually just hot air. The wood gas comes off the top of the fire but without the air it would escape as smoke.
Ah! Thank you Alan! That makes sense. It’s a really good system, I like the efficiency and the lack of smoke! Atb, Simon
Chef Simon, a bloke in the woods. :) Looked good!
Hahaha - thank you Jason! It tasted pretty good too, could have done with some flour to thicken up the gravy a bit, but the flavour was great with those blackberries in! Cheers, Simon
I bet it was good. It's been years since I've had rabbit but we raised them on the farm when I was growing up. I can still remember the first time seeing one at the kitchen table and thinking "hmm, that's odd... that chicken has four legs."
You could make a basket to keep the pellets away from the air vents. Great video.
Cheers Harold! That’s what I was thinking, a sort of mesh basket. Atb, Simon
Just found your channel simon, from Andy’s Kent survival. Really enjoyed this. Vid. Great canoe you have, and Maggie is so well behaved. Bet she loves being out with you. Thanks Simon
Have subbed you.
Thank you and thanks for the sub! Maggie is good girl! She’s very kind hearted and gentle, patient and also makes great ballast to keep the canoe trimmed haha! Cheers, Simon
😂 the ballast would be useful. That canoe you’ve got does look the biz
Great video my friend Sir Simon!
That rabbit sure did look larruping!
Growing up as a young boy, rabbit was are main meat during the winter. Squirrel was second. I shot my first rabbit at age 11-12 with now my 22 Remington single shot. Shot it right between the eyes! My Dad was elated! We would ride the hedge rows in winter's snow. The rabbits were less active. One day we harvested 23 rabbits. My Mom would cook (skillet fry) rabbit with salt, pepper and garlic salt. Served with mashed potatoes and gravy! Tasted better than chicken!
That sounds so good David! Simple fried rabbit! I do love rabbit - shame it’s out of fashion these days. Atb mate, Simon
Nice one Simon, I could just about taste that lot. Once upon a time I had thought about using blackberries and blackberry liquor in a creamy sauce for gamey stuff....I think I'll give it some more thought.
Aye some really fine flavours of the countryside going on there...great stuff, cheers 👍
Cheers Robert! Creamy blackberry sauce sounds like heaven! You need to take that one to dragons den! Seriously salivating now hahaha! Atb, Simon
We did Parsons Venison on a ship I was on for Xmas lunch as an alternative choice to the old cardboard Turkey. It was in fact a boned and rolled leg of lamb marinaded in port, with juniper berries, bay leaves and one or two other bits n bobs.... and the Blackberry idea stemmed from that. The port and cream idea was nice but I thought something fruity could make it more interesting...
Ive yet to try it out... 😀
Another great adventure well done.
3/4 bunnies are always the best eating but can die hard...
Further to a previous msg re cat litter, my stove a Wild Woodgas Stove - Budget Model, also has holes the little pellets can fall out. I use a stainless collapsable steamer with fold out leaves under the stove and let the debris fall. Great bit of kit £2.00 @ Aldi. Various other sites sell them it too. IKEA one is poor quality. Lots of small perforations to aerate and small legs with spherical feet keep it orf the ground... More aeration...Used it with coals too and grilliput BBQ
Keep up the good work
Great idea to use one of those steamers, I’ve seen them used on their own, but not under a stove - got to be worth a try - roll on Aldi’s next kitchen ware special buy!! Atb, Simon
Another good one Simon, we were out on the Waveney this morning, the duck weed was really thick!
Cheers Simon! Where did you paddle? The weed is bad at the moment isn’t it! Needs clearing annually really! Hope you had a nice paddle despite! Atb, Simon
Hi Simon, from Scole Bridge. Managed to squeeze under the fallen willow, and had to get out and push a few times. The reeds are almost blocking the entire width in places. Paddled for about 45 mins and stopped for lunch. Then decided as it was hard going and we would have a strong headwind on the way back, best to call it a day there and head back upstream to the car. It was still a fun way to spend a few hours :-)
Sounds like you had a tough couple of hours! Roll on the Autumn when it’ll die back again! I love an Autumn/winter paddle!
This very important phenomenal bushcarft channel and the video he’s makes are great phenomenal way to help people learning their bushcraft skills and learning activities about outdoors and to be education about wildlife and wilderness and I am glad to support this phenomenal man and his experience bushcraft channel and just best one for UA-cam and blackberry also nice in apple crumble 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴🤴👸🤴🤴🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🤴👏👏👏👏
Thanks Donna! I do love apple and blackberry crumble! Mmmmm, with custard! Atb, Simon
Maggie is such a sweetheart! My dogs are good guys, BUT, when food is around I am reminded of a survivor in a life raft surrounded by prowling sharks. LOL I always share, and they wait patiently but attentive. (and between them I'm sure there is the shard thought ... "you bump the table, I'll grab the meat, and we'll share once we are outside)
😂😂😂 you are probably right! A dogs instinct!
Great video Simon not sure about the cat litter pellets tho I buy the bio pellets specifically made for wood stoves and wood burners
Cheers Steve! I’m sure they are better (the ones you get, that is), probably burn for longer too! It was a worthwhile experiment, I’ll modify the fire bowl and try it again. Atb, Simon
Great vid Simon I absolutely love your boat did you do build video cheers
Thanks Jeff! Unfortunately I haven’t got any video footage of he build, I made it before I started this UA-cam thing and only took photos. The annoying thing is that most of the photos were then lost!! I thought I’d backed them up to a remote server when I tried to free up space on my phone, but no! I’d just deleted them!! Grrrrrr! I’ve got a few thankfully, that I’d posted on Facebook. They are on my first Canoeing video - ‘A paddle on the river Waveney’ Atb, Simon
Did I here a buzzard mewing as the stove was lighting.
My experience of the pellets was that within seconds of adding them you'd smothered your fire.
