    One of the hardest chores when owning a horse, is finding a good farrier. At 75, I've seen a lot of shoes being put on horses. I've seen okay shoeing along with some iffy jobs. After watching your video, it goes without saying you are ONE of the best I've ever seen. You can ruin a good horse by not taking care of his feet. I've seen that happen too often. I used to check my horses feet first thing in the morning. I'd clean them with a pic after feeding them then I would turn them out.
    A farrier like you, is worth his weight in gold.
    Not everybody has the skill to do the work
    that is required.
    From an old cowboy I tip my hat to you.
    👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

    My father was a farmer. That's why I know, that giving a horse new shoes in Germany was a job for two men. One holds the leg and the hoof smith makes the work. He does booth jobs. Congratulation for his skills.

    What the happens to horses in the wild? Do they walk on enough rocks and rough ground so the nail naturally wears enough so the hoof doesn't get too big?

    • @poipoqui

      yeah i think that's it

    • @JA3bONE
      @JA3bONE 2 місяці тому +4

      Yes that is basically what the google says. And they walk a lot more generally. And not all domesticated horses have shod hooves.

    • @johankriel8883
      @johankriel8883 2 місяці тому +15

      Yes. The exterior hoof capsule gets chipped or worn or away. The whole hoof makes contact with the surface, not only the outer edge and hardens like horn. The unshod horse/zebra/donkey walks on its soles as intended. The soles are softer than the hoof capsule and abrades away. In wild and properly conditioned barefoot horses the end result is called the mustang roll. Most domesticated horses do not get enough mileage to achieve a healthy wear which calls for trimming. Unshod hooves allow the capsule to flex when bearing weight This flexing acts as an auxiliary vascular pump. That is why some say that horses have five hearts. Shoeing origins were to prevent slipping on ice and only the front hooves were shod and after the winter season these horses were unshod and given a whole season to recover. Shod horses have sharp arrow shaped frogs while wild horses have heart shaped frogs. Shoeing is ingrained in horse culture and shoeing a horse impressive and skilled work. Opinions about shoeing are as strong as on the topics of sport and religion. For a domesticated horse kept on limited space and often stabled hoof wear is insufficient so hooves have to be trimmed and filed. After trimming and filing the exposed horny tissue is soft and sensitive, as it takes time to harden which is an argument used to prescribe horse shoes. With the bulk of the horse's weight focused on the periphery of the hoof capsule the soles do no touch the ground. The weight above is not properly distributed and eventually the unsupported coffin bone can protrude from the sole in what is called founder's disease. Due to lack of flexing the hoof shape becomes characteristically elongated, with an arrow shape frog and narrow heel bulbs. Even if such a horse then goes barefoot, years after it will be instantly obvious that it was at some time shod and for how long.
      Horses are over engineered, that is why they are able to put up with this for quite a long time. But it is a controversial topic, best not to criticize a farrier of owner who shoes his horses.

      A veces , no necesariamente es asi, ejemplo: una vez una de mis lleguas sufria de machucones en las manos, luego de hacerle unas radiografias : me salio que por un tema congenito no tenia casi talon por eso sufria de machucones, la solucion colocar ademas de las plantillas la heradura ortopedica llamada corazon : la misma hace que el caballo saque mas rapido las manos del piso y no caiga con todo el peso de cuerpo, ya que la llegua era entrenada para correr en el turf...las plantillas no pueden estar colocadas mas de tres meses ,sino aparecen otros tipos de problemas en los vasos.....!!!

      I saw in germany that they add a rubber midsole. Maybe because of the cushioning?

    • @slamdunktiger
      @slamdunktiger Місяць тому

      Guessing...prob application specific since you have to factor in wear, moisture and such. It probably feels more cushy though than a rubber midsole but doesn't last as long.
      If you have a good cadence of shoeing, I'd imagine the leather will be replaced before it wears out.

    • @SanchoKobe
      @SanchoKobe 2 місяці тому +4

      It looked like there was a crack in the hoof, or some infection with the frog. The purple drops I think were medication to help heal the injury and the putty and leather sole were just for protection while it heals.

    • @Junyrmint16
      @Junyrmint16 2 місяці тому +8

      Usually rubber or leather pads are for protection of the sole, if they get stone bruises easily or have thin soles. The putty is to fill the gap and keep bacteria out. The purple drops are a thruth treatment and while I've never seen the crystals, it looked like it might be a copper sulfate type treatment, which also helps with infections and thrush.

    This was exceptionally! My Father owned a huge auto repair in Iran. He was a Mercedes Benz Specialist. So many of the Shahs ministers and Imperial Senators were my Fathers customers! I had grown up here in the US came here as 1 year old in 1961. We moved back in 1972 and as a citizen attended TAS! Tehran American School! The real Good days of Iran. General Rashmi, a Top Military Brass asked me at my Father’s garage if I liked horse back riding? I said as a youngster my sister and I would rent horse and ride a trail through Montebello CA where we lived! Ok, he said, he told my Father he would meet us at the Imperial Stables just NE of Tehran! Yes I said Imperial Stables… this meant the Shahs Equestrian Center! Man, you talk about some beautiful and expensive horses???!!! When we arrived this is exactly what we saw, a horse having new shoes put on! This was 1973 not 2024! The soldiers that were responsible for the paddocks and stables and horse and making sure the horse were feed and given water were just soldiers in the Iranian military. What I saw then was nothing compared to what I just saw! The farrier that worked on the Shahs horses rd shoeing them had tools, maybe from France or Germany or the USA. This was a long post, but I had to bring the knowledge! What this man did here in this Video? Was complete no nonsense full Throttle true Master Craftsmanship. Never have I seen a better full on masterpiece of skilled work , since seeing my Father Tune a 1968 250 SL! Zenith Carburetors were no Joke! So, a Horse with New Shoes is why we get Automobile talk about Horsepower! Cheers❤! Thank you for your Love of the Animal! You’re a True Specialist! Mohammad Reza Pahlavi if he were alive, would have made sure you came to Iran to Re Shoe his Stable of Horses! You just might get a call from MBS of Saudi Arabia! Never know till the Phone Rings! 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯

    I'm sure this is a stupid question and it probably has nothing to do with anything, but how hot does that forge get? I'm just starting to work with metal (not for shoeing) and I'm just curious. I'm guessing there's a sweet spot for the temps. Too hot, too soft and the opposite when too cool. And one more dumb question, what's the liquid you dripped onto the hoof? And then it looked like you put bubblegum on. Lol. I know it's not but just wondering what it is. I'm sorry for all the ignorant questions but you got me curious. You definitely have a subscriber by the way. Great video. Can't wait to see more.

      700 - 800 degrees Celsius (1300 - 1500 in "We went to the moon" units) is when steel starts glowing red. This should be the approximate temperature of that horseshoe since it was starting to glow red when he pulled it out. No idea on the blue stuff since I'm not a farrier.
