      -- Me too ! I bought both the Optimus 8 ( Multi-Fuel ) & the Optimus 8R ( Alcohol Only ) , and also about 45 years ago . Love them both , but they're too bulky for backpacking . I normally carry a small Propane Stove in my pack , but I also carry a nylon satchel with a shoulder-strap and pick up select pieces of firewood and thoroughly dried Cow Pies from range cattle (high desert firewood) that I encounter along my hike . I have a compact Grill & Windscreen that I carry , and it only takes me a couple of minutes to have a campfire going .

    On long canoe trips I take a Kelly Kettle and a gasifier twig stove. The 1.2 litre Kelly will get you a big mug of tea and a freeze dried meal. The gasifier will fry a fish or cook a conventional pot and you can huddle over it under a reflective tarp when it starts snowing and windbounds you nothing but scrub willow for shelter. It has kept off hypothermia. I bring a large clear drybag that I fill with dry, broken down branches early in the trip and keep for emergencies like that.
    If I'm with other people, it's basically a two burner stove setup and can produce a lot of hot food fast.

    I very rarely use anything but a wood gas stove and have for year's A tip simon if you pack your stove with twigs so they're on end light your fire on the top so it burns down as soon as it starts to gassify then start to cook on it ,I've had 45 minutes cook time regularly without having to add fuel .

      Tony 1690Very good, one other thing is that you can make your own wood gas stove. There are many youtubes available that show you different methods. I would prefer them since you're not weighted down with fuel.

      Good advice for the wood gas stoves, 👍👍👍
      the smaller the pieces of wood you put in to preload it the better, you can also burn wood pellets in it . (Keep some in a dry bad in the car in case it’s a really wet day)
      I have had over an hour burn time when filled to the brim with the pellets.

    Hi Simon, if you flip the fire box tray on the Gasifiers to raise the bottom you can get a spirit burner or solid fuel in there no worries, works nicely and protects the flame as well as the full size Trangia for me! (I have the Lixada one with the triangular pot stands)

    Simon, thanks for this great video. I've learned a lot from you today. I've been watching other videos that deal with the wood gasification stoves, and I'm not sure that you're loading them properly. What I've seen others do is this: load the stove with twigs all standing UP, and light the stove from the TOP. This starts the gasification process. If you do this properly, you get a very long burn, and you might not need to add any more fuel while you're cooking. One video I watched demonstrated the stove with wood pellets and the result was an amazingly long burn.
    Thanks again for a great video. Cheers from New Haven Connecticut, USA.

      I would have to disagree. Alcohol stoves, including the Trangia, are an absolute nightmare to use in even the slightest of winds (even with a windscreen), yet alone a snowstorm lol. Plus you can not simmer with these things at all. With a decent canister stove, you'll get much more efficiency and cooking time for your money... for colder temperatures or higher altitudes there are white gas stoves. Alcohol stoves are great because they are quiet, and fuel is easier to get. Plus it's easy to make your own. Fantastic for daily use, for proper hiking and mountaineering no way...

    • @erikgranqvist3680
      @erikgranqvist3680 4 роки тому +2

      @@kevinklein4748 I have used my Trangia in full-on snowstorm in Lapplands mountains without the tiniest of problems. Not once have I seen any trouble when used correctly. Mind you, I am using the alcohol burner that is the original for Trangia, not some insert connected to a gas bottle. And yes, you can easily use it to simmer or even just keep the coffee warm. Use the lid with a movable hatch for that.

    • @kevinklein4748
      @kevinklein4748 4 роки тому

      @@erikgranqvist3680 not sure what you define as a "full-on snowstorm", but in the Scottish Highlands that easily means 60-100mph gusts and hail the size of baseballs... being even higher up north, I would assume that Lapland has similar types of storms, so I heavily doubt that anyone in their right mind would be setting up their cookware in that type of weather. One would probably be well advised to retreat to their storm shelter or tent if that happens, and with the lack of flame control I would personally not use any type of alcohol stove in there. Theoretically you can use the simmer cap, yes... however, this is just a cap that you can tilt to cut off a part of the flame, you won't have anywhere near the control and precision that you have with a quality canister or white gas stove... alcohol stoves produce a very large flame once the alcohol has started to vaporise, so no chance I would use this for cooking inside a vestibule...each to their own though. The Trangia is a nice stove, sure... however, just like any alcohol stove, these things work very well in low temperatures - they are not exactly known to be the most efficient stoves in high winds. You can nest them inside a container to get around this, but even then you'll have some type of air flow, and boiling times will be substantially longer.

    Very interesting. Years ago I had an Optimus 8R which I foolishly got rid of - regretting this more recently, I was looking for one again, it's not made any more and second hand ones are stupid money! They've become collectors' items! But I found a Russian copy, called Turist PT1, virtually identical except has a large knob to control the flame instead of the quite often annoying 'key' of the 8R, and as a bonus, includes a specially shaped funnel for refilling. I burn petrol in it, as I did with the 8R. Yes it's fussy about priming and usually needs two doses of meths to get it going. Right through the 1980's and '90's I did ALL my camp cooking on the 8R, then finally switched to a Coleman 533. 😁👍

    I am 73 years old and have been using the Svea 123r since the 1960's. I figured out a neat way to start it. Just tear off a small piece of paper towel, toilet paper will not work. Roll it long ways between your fingers. Then open the fuel cap and dip the rolled paper towel into the ful and let it soak up some gas. Put the rolled paper towel in the preheating cup, being careful not to let it get near the fuel cap so you don't burn the o ring. Jut light it and open the vaqlve when it gets hot. That way you don't have fuel running down the outside of the stove.

    That's a real nice over view of differents stoves. The Firebox and other Wood burning stoves are certainly the best option because of their versatility and the pleasure of the flavor wood can gives to your foods but in some situations like fire ban or parks & reserves you can't use them. So Spirit stoves can become a real interesting option and as you show you even make them. But in our cold Canadian winters white gas/ parrafin/ coleman fuel stoves are just what it takes. They work so Great in lower temperatures or in altitude. I have an old optimus 111 and à Meva from the Czechoslovakia army and I love those roarers, you can't beat those, They are so powerfull. Canister gas stoves are to me useless in winter and to expensive to run. Thanks for your Awsome video and I will certainly recommand it to people who want a good reference to make up their mind regarding what kind of stoves They can select. 👍👏👏👏👏

Yes, I agree with you about using paraffin/white gas stoves at altitude and cold temps - I spent some time in the Norwegian mountains some years ago, the Optimus 111 was the stove of choice then, methylated spirits just didn’t want to know!! But like you said, wood stoves are my day to day favourite! Cheers, Simon.

      Dale, camping cylinders available in the US are a 90% butane/10% propane mix which aids in the ignition/combustion process during cold conditions. I now live in the Philippines and most replacement camp stove cylinders available here that are imported from Korea are the same 90/10 mix. Also, I questioned my gas delivery guy about what mix is used to refill our cooking gas cylinders. He responded that it is indeed the 90% butane/10% propane mice used in camp cylinders. The majority of the time, cold weather is not an issue here in the tropics but trust me, it can be up in the mountains of places like Baguio.

      @@simonablokeinthewoods If you do use wood pellets in your gasifiers here's a great tip for a better burn:. Take a metal mesh sink strainer and cut the outer rim off of it and discard it. Take the mesh part and flatten it out then cut it in a round circle to fit inside your gasifier stove on top of the grate. Doing this keeps the pellets from falling down through the stove's grate and prevents a clog from happening. I do this when using my SOLO Stove Titan, my favorite gasifier stove. Also, using this tip you can burn charcoal too so it opens up even more cooking options and favors 🥰😎🍀

    Ah, the MEMORIES! In the middle 1970's and forward of then we did a lot of backpacking over mountain trails. I had a Coleman model about the size of yours that burned 'Coleman Fuel' and it also had the advantage of not needing pre-heating. The act of turning it on and off cleaned the fuel aperture. Primus and Svea stoves were even more evident on the trails; usually with a paste primer that left a 'gunky' residue. Cold temperatures and blustery wind bedeviled each of these stoves. These days, I am impressed by the 'gasifier' twig stoves for their basic efficiency and their sturdy windscreen/pot support system. For backpacking convenience these days, I would pick the 'Firebox.' It is compact and functional and can easily be fed, as you demonstrated. Thanks for a great video!

      Cheers James! Yes, I find the same with those old pressure stoves - any hint of a breeze and they are difficult to prime and run erratically - I find I need a big windshield. I’ve used priming paste too, the sanitizer hand gel works the same and also leaves a residue! Cheers, Simon

    Hi Simon. Greetings from Broadland. I have enjoyed your videos for a while now but this one ticked the 100% box for me. I'm a lamp and stove anorak and loved the way you talked with knowledge and passion about the various styles and versions and why you particularly liked them without finding a reason to criticise the various different efficiencies and deficiencies, appreciating each has its own main suitably. I have a few stoves including wood, wood gasification, military Trangia and mainly pressure stoves. I use mainly a circa 2000's Prabhat 1 pint stove with roarer burner, a circa 1950's Parasene 1 pint stove with silent burner and a 1937 Primus 96 touring stove with lipstick roarer burner. In most cases these stoves work well for me on car camping trips and journey breaks. I look forward to seeing your next video and wish I had enough time to post my own again. All the best and many thanks for your excellent videos. Regards Broadlander

      Thank you so much! I do love a stove, but the problem is, a collection is never complete haha! Your list of user stoves sounds perfect - a nice mix of old and new! I really enjoy the nostalgia and the ritual of paraffin stoves, but for everyday use, I tend to opt for small folding twig stoves with a meths burner backup. I’ve just found and subbed to your channel sir - I think I’m going to enjoy browsing through you videos!! Cheers and Atb, Simon

    I have 15 or 20 stoves. It's an addiction. Truck camping I'll usually take a Coleman suitcase-- usually a two burner but sometimes need the 3 burner. River camping a Dragonfly or Nova. Winter/atv camping an Optimus 111b. I won't ever own a canister stove, and never use my kerosene stoves, which is a shame, because I have 7 gallons of it lying about. I just prefer white gas.
    For the most part I never cook over a fire anymore, and often never even have one. The smell of smoke keeps game away.
    Love the vids. Thanks for doing them.

    Thanks Simon - another great video - two tips - wood gassifier stoves are TLUD ( top lit up draft) pack them with twigs up to the level of the inner holes put tinder on top and light, it it burns top down. These stoves also take a trangia etc simply invert the fire basket that normally drops down to make a (inner) raised platform to sit the spirit burner on and you have a lighter wt set up compared to Fire Box or Honey wood stoves. Note: paraffin stoves can be lit with paraffin (place scrunched up paper tissue into the pre-heater ring, pressure up the tank, turn on the valve so liquid paraffin wets the ring, light the wetted tissue paper and this wicked paraffin will preheat - without the need of methylated spirits etc). Keep your videos coming - great information!

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 років тому

      Thanks Steve - I’ve not heard of using paraffin from the tank to preheat - great tip!!
      I’ve since learnt a bit more about those gasifiers - buying them second hand, without instructions etc, I’d just been using them like my other twig stoves they work very well as you describe. 👍😁

      @@simonablokeinthewoods Hi Simon , As a boy growing up in (1960's) East Africa, safari camping with paraffin stoves and pressure lanterns was all part of the experience - fantastic balls of night flying insects around the Lanterns and keeping pots, pans and stoves scrupulously clean to stop hyenas chewing the metal ware ( no bear bags in those days...)

      Really? I only paid $8.95 for my Svea 123 at the Kelty Store in Glendale, Calif. in May 1970. And they threw in a gallon of Coleman fuel free. But I did have a big $100 tab for Kelty Pack, tent, down bag, 60/40 parka, and a lot of other stuff. You probably got $1.35 back on your Coop dividend, too.

    I am enjoying the same handicap; collecting stoves of all brands and sizes.....
    It all began with my scouting career at 10. I agree, that this simple folding stove is the most practical in most circumstances for small quantities. In high alpine areas I believe is the Trangia storm cooker the best, compact with all pans too, very light and storm proof. The Optimus 111T is extremely powerful, good for larger portions and as far as its weight does not matter too much....
    What I missed here is the Kelly kettle. Also a very efficient stove to heat a tent by boiling water, using very little fuel.

    Interesting Video with a nice collection of stoves .. thanks.
    Yep, one can never have too many stoves 😊. My (working) collection includes both the Campinggaz GT 106 Globe Trotter, Standard Bluet 206 and Optimus 8R Hunter (these three must be round about 40+ years old). Later additions are a Whitebox Meths Burner, Bushbox LF Wood Burner, Esbit Stove (from 1968 .. Military Service) and a myriad of self-made Catfood Can and Pepsi Can Stoves.
    Metal Bottle Lids and Tops work pretty well with Gel Fuel .. an extremely lightweight option is a homemade wire Folding Triangular Stand and a Lid filled with Gel Fuel.
    Once again, thanks for the posting .. makes me itch to get out and cook (unfortunately here in Switzerland, we currently have a total ban on fires and such in our forests). Keep cooking 😊.
