  • This is my first shooting impression of the brand new Fujifilm X-H2S + XF18-120mm F4 LM PZ WR. As mentioned in previous videos, this is a pre-production unit, including hardware and firmware, so none of the photos, videos, and performance tests are final. Please wait for me to test a production copy before I can make a final conclusion on performance. Check out my other videos and articles on the latest gear from Fujifilm.

    Great initial impressions! As a video-centric person who loves Fuji, this is a must-get for me! They should really add that anamorphic de-squeeze in camera though. Also, I want to have a look at that IBIS and video autofocus. But definitely looks like Fuji has entered the video game!

    Thanks for this preview Take. I do like the back button layout, hope the X-T and X-Pro will be similar, but with the dials, obviously, prefer not to have PASM.
    The 18-120 seems great, hopefully it’ll not have focus and exposure problems when zooming for the production firmware.

    Excited about this lens for live streaming indoor sports like volleyball, basketball and track. F4 isn’t that fast but the high iso performance of the recent Fuji cameras is good. I was almost ready to invest in a camcorder (no they’re not dead!) because servo zoom is critical to this type of work.

    Lots of great detail here, thank you!
    Do you have an idea whether the stacked sensor is able to mitigate the banding effect caused by artificial lights when using electronic shutter, like the Sony A9ii or A1, for example? I understand that the read out speed is not anywhere near as fast as those Sony cameras, but just wondered if there's any progress here?

    Thank you for the post. Very informative. Well done. A few questions:
    - How is the handheld video stabilization of the X-HS2? I don't expect it to rival Panasonic or Olympus but hopefully it is improved over the X-T4 or X-S10.
    - The video footage looks great - a cinematic feel of Downtown Vancouver East Side😀. It was shot in low light with an F4 lens and yet it seems well-lit. Did you use a higher ISO or did you use external lighting?
    - Fujifilm finally came up with a competitor to Sony's 18-105mm F4. Sony has lens stabilization though. Does the XF18-120mm F4 have focus breathing issues when zooming similar to the XF16-80mm lens? And speaking of zooming, does the X-HS2 have something similar to Sony's Clear Image Zoom?
    - Last question - where'd you get the hat?
    Thanks again.

    Another very informative and helpful video. Thanks! While it would be nice to have a de-squeeze, I think anyone shooting anamorphic video will be using a monitor and de-squeeze is a common feature for them. Also, since the video is titled "First Shooting Impressions", I wish you had discussed a little more what it felt like when using in the field compared to other Fuji cameras. Most of your impressions was about using the new zoom.

    Great video! Has the flickering and focus issues when zooming been fixed in firmware updates? In the video this is seen at 1:04, 13:25, and especially at 13:40 even with relatively slow zooms, let alone fast zooming as in subjects like sports. It's atrocious that Fujifilm is still so far behind all the competitors in 2023 when it comes to this essential video feature.

    a great comparison video - yes a fujifilm anamorphic lens that autofocus and is wide enough to deliver the xpan crop haha that would be crazy fantastic
    certainly a camera too powerful for my needs - with all the photo features - it certainly will go down stream to the XT lines and pro line of cameras that will love to get those features.
    for now - it does make more sense for the H2 with the 40mp sensor be the one for photographers anyways though not sure how people feel about the type of sensor being used for that camera and whether that will matter too much
    ill still wonder which of the two sensors will the xt and pro line get as well.

    Regarding anamorphic: you are doing it wrong in post. You don't "stretch out" digital image, anamorphic desqueeze works only optically. You scale it down to same horizontal resolution. Otherwise your computer is creating pixels which were not shot.

    Looks like a fantastically capable stills/video camera. The question I have is if this is their flagship model it is probably the only one that will receive the stacked sensor. So it will probably be the best sports action/fastest autofocus, frame rate camera. So its hard to say this is mostly a video centric camera. Im just going to think its going to be the best of the best as far as feature set/capability. Knowing that the Xh-2 will have the 40mp sensor, it will be a bit odd if it does not have a stacked sensor to take advantage of faster autofocus and frame rate for stills. It seems like that should be the better wildlife camera but not if the frame rate is substantial less. The biggest question is what sensor will the future line of fuji cameras use? If they are making 2 new sensors for the xh line what will be used in the lower end models? That is what I am most interested in.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  2 роки тому

      yes the two sensor but one processor dilemma is real. For instance, neither sensor seem appropriate on the base level cameras, like the X-E4. The reason is that the base level cameras have always had UHS-I SD slots, so throughput to the cards have always been slower. Imagine putting a stacked sensor on a base level body, but then throttle it with a slow SD card slot? Also the new processor seems overkill as well. I would be curious to see if there's a third sensor for the base level cameras (maybe a modest 30-36MP non stacked BSI CMOS sensor?) and maybe keep the previous X Processor IV or use a dumbed down version or have a consumer version of the X Processor V? More questions than answers at this point, but it's still exciting to find out what Fujifilm does.

    even with a new video designed lens we can still see the exposure stepping on a supposedly constant aperture zoom, Fuji really needs to fix their cameras, it's not about the lenses. Another example is Viltrox lenses, which have de-clicked aperture, aren't stepless on Fuji bodies but are on other camera brands.

    have Fujifilm resolved the "jitter" that the AF used to do if you're in AF-C and shooting a static (talking head for example) in video? This is one of the main reasons I recently bought a Sony for my own UA-cam channel use instead of waiting for this camera. I am (still) a committed Fujifilm shooter (XPro1, XT1, XT2 and XH1) but for interviews my XH1's video is sometimes unusable (I feel) because the video will "hunt" back and forth on a static subject during an interview or if you're doing a direct to camera talking head type of recording.
    Has this been fixed in the XH2s?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  2 роки тому +1

      The X-T2 and X-H1 used the 3rd generation sensor and processor, that had mediocre continuous video autofocus except in very specific settings. The 4th generation cameras, such as the X-T3 and X-T4 had a much better processor and sensor. This video was shot with the X-T4 and XF16-80mm lens. You decide if it’s good enough or not. However, this 5th generation is even better for continuous AF in video.

    Well, I know the firmware is not final yet, but unfortunately all I see is that the AF pumping is not fixed, the IBIS doesn't seems much better than the XT4... I seriously hope they are going to improve this before the launch... Fingers crossed ;)
    Also the 18-120 PZ has an exposure shift at some point when zooming, and i wonder if it's optically parfocal or software.. looks like a software thing which seems to lag a bit sometimes.. like the samyang 24-70 .. I hope I'm wrong though..
    Thank you for these samples footages

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  2 роки тому +3

      The XF18-120 is not parfocal, it’s varifocal so it needs to continuously refocus as you zoom in and out. There is exposure flicker when zooming in and out as well, but because I had a pre-production unit, I can not confirm if this will be an issue with a production copy of the body and lens. Stay tuned for a future test with a production copy.

      Watch Taylor Jacksons video and some other review videos and judge and if you are not satisfied, wait, rent and experiment yourself so that you can decide whether to buy or not. That was the same with Nikon Z9, Fuji had better AF than them. So wait.

    i guess they went that way because X-H1 has been a commercial failure, and youtubers / bloggers make a better market thant photographers nowadays...

    X-H1 form factor was murdered, with no replacement for a dial camera with a grip. People begged for one for so long before the X-H1, then we got it, 1 time, then just abandoned. Maybe if PASM was even good for video it would be cool, but PASM isn't. True video first cameras use software or hardware *buttons* to change presets so a preset isn't locked to a dial position for ahandful of nameless presets. Button/software presets can change at any time and you have an unlimited number of *named* presets. We could have had both strengths with a switch between dials and custom presets that use buttons and software. But they went with PASM is just mediocre for anything. And now I can't grip my next Fuji camera, because it will be a an X-T or X-Pro. Super annoying.

    Here’s the ideal scenario for Fujifilm moving forward:
    XH line for professional hybrid workflow
    XT line for resolution photography
    XPro line for analog photography
    X100 series for entry point and shoot
    Fuji should also kill all the double digit cameras so they don’t overpopulate the market with cameras.

      I think it’s great they have the base or prosumer cameras. Remember Fujifilm isn’t Canon or Sony, they don’t as many cameras as those brands. The base level cameras are a gateway into the pro series, so I think it’s important for them to keep them in their line-up.

      Well Fujifilm’s X-Mount has been around for 10 years and was always behind Sony and Canon when it comes to autofocus, and yet they’ve constantly grown in those 10 years. I think Fujifilm has captured a different segment of the market, one that isn’t looking for the fastest AF as their primary reason for choosing a camera. However, with the X-H2S, they are now encroaching on Sony and Canon’s ‘territory’ so yes they definitely need to improve they want to capture that part of the market.

    I've been shooting Fuji for years now since my X30 which 7 years on they still have no replacement for???? If fitted with a crop sensor would have changed the landscape.
    I really get the feeling like they are misers and use tiny incremental stuff to keep us hooked ...and after years I'm still waiting for something revolutionary. Fuji care more for profit than they do our delights.
