A few weeks ago I got a message from @tinkstrong on Instagram, requesting a dress with "mushroom sleeves"... GENIUS (I went with making a top instead but still... GENIUSSS). If you know me, you know I love anything forest-y or nature-related so I HADDA DO IT TO EM. Along the way, I sweat, I sang, I sweat some more. I hope you enjoy :')
I love you all!!!

Well I hope you don't feel bad about it, and if it makes you feel better, when you said Mars, I pictured the _candy bar_ and was _confused_ 😂😅

As a previous astronomy student (I dropped out the one class) I can say with absolute certainty... that you are not alone, add me to the list of people who thought red = hot. It makes HER look like a snack
Hahaha that’s such a good quote!
The fly agaric mushroom is a hallucininagenic, sort of poisonous but still i wouldn't touch it, on the advice of that smoking caterpiller, he's so sage!!
Another win for Sir. Pratchett!🖤🖤🖤
TERYR PRATCHETT!!!!!!!
The ruffles were a good touch, they don't read as stems but rather those frills on the underside of a mushroom, which works.
Nerd fact they're called gills. Like on a fish. I don't get it either.
@@lauramathews3151 See, I thought that, and then I thought, no that can't be right.
its not. its the velum.
if its the underside of the head, then gills or pores- its called that way because it looks similar to gills. thats where the spores are released.
more likely theodore means the velum- amanita is a species whose body at the youngest stage looks a bit like an egg- a closed round shape- the the stem and hat grow, rip apart the outer soft layer that stays at the bottom- the way to differentiate the toxic, deadly amanita verna, phalloides and ocreata from edible agaricus cametris ( they are the same family., but amanita have a velum.
theres 2 types of velum, the types amanitas have is auniversal because its around the full shroom-
and theres a partao velum that is only around the head of the shroom, that rips and usually hangs around the stem. (its called a ring or annulus. to annul is o end, so..)
en.wikipedia. org /wiki/Veil_(mycology)

Yeah and her arms also act sort of as the stems so it works really well
her arms are the stems :D
This. This is EVERYTHING. 😍

I was wondering how long it would take Madame Donner to smell the mushrooms. :D
Now I"m picturing a bunch of costubers getting together after making their own mushroom sleeves, and the photoshoot is a fairy ring.

ikr!!? i was stunned that it was rachel and not you making this, dear one!! xoxoxoxoxo
I knew you would love it, Morgan!
Rachel has three moods:
1) “fuck it that looks close enough”
2) * screams in toad *
3) old auntie advice that makes me rethink my life
4) * self aware auntie humor *
5) is extremely surprised and confused about how she accomplished her goal.
6) emo rachel
7) Bathroom karaoke Rachel 🎤
8) Stick me in the middle of the forest and let me bloom
Okay but the painted on spots look so much better and so much more like mushroom sleeves than a standard polka dot would have looked
Rachel when sewing: There are no rules!
Comment Section: PRESS YOUR SEAMS!
Rachel crying in the corner with her iron: There's one rule
🤣😂🤣 unceasing, unyielding, with one great voice they demand
@@0meAcat1 😄 One rule to rule them all, one rule to guide them. One rule to bring them all, and in the light unite them. In the land of Sewing, where the garments lie.
As someone who has been sewing for a really long time it's true there are no 'rules' as such but there are certain ways of doing things that will help you get a better end result. There might be three or four perfectly acceptable ways of getting the same result though so there's that. Pressing your seams will ALWAYS give you a better result though, so maybe that's not so much a rule as a strongly worded guideline??? That said, I'm always impressed at how well Rachel's projects end up. :D

Here in the Netherlands we have a fairytale themepark, de Efteling. The oldest part of the park is the forrest where all the fairytales are depicted. All throughout they made giant mushrooms that play music. I thought of those mushrooms all throughout this video.
Here is a clip of the mushroommusic: ua-cam.com/video/uXSa8mUyYE4/v-deo.html

The 5 year old I’m babysitting said, “That fabric’s awesome!” So he approves
P.s. at the reveal shots, he exclaimed, “She’s like a princess! She’s wonderful!”
It was so sweet😊
My five year old said "They do look like mushrooms, but why did she do that?" I said because she wanted to and that seemed to be acceptable to him. haha
Children speak the truth….
“Stick me in the middle of a forest and let me bloom” that kinda sounds like an inspirational quote
Needs to be on a card.
...gonna steal it
"Bloom where you are planted " exists and I had a fight with my therapist about that. Because I didn't want to be planted where I was.
Actually there is a piece of music for bagpipes called "Flowers of the Forest". Traditionally played at funerals.
selfishly wishing Rachel would open an online boutique because she's my favorite designer
I’d buy that!

Or, mix and match panels and pieces so you could mix and match pieces she has already made.
PLSSSS we need it!
She'd make a fortune.
I'd buy at least a few things.
I am a dressmaker by trade, I own my own business and I have been sewing for about 40 years. You are amazing and you get better every time you sew! Thank you for sharing your wonderful creations!

The cutest Herbology professor Hogwarts has ever seen
I really want this to be a thing. Like we need a movie on the adorable forest wearing herbology professor haha.
I know right?! I just picture her coming in to the classroom a bit late, stressed and disheveled with pine needles and moss in her hair and her glasses a bit askew 😊 All the students love her to bits.
Petition to make this a thing, and have her be the actress?

"Who needs so much toe hair, Sir?"
I mean... He's a Hobbit after all, isn't he?
Good point!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your mentality towards sewing. As a perfectionist and someone who would beat myself up over absolutely everything, it's incredibly freeing to hear someone say I can just do something because it's fun and I enjoy it, even though it isn't perfect. Life is too hard already to find new things to beat yourself up over, and you are a great example of skill meeting self-compassion and not taking things too seriously! Sewing feels a lot lore accessible mow!
I feel like with each passing week Rachel is getting more and more like Miss Frizzle! Mitochondria-themed outfit next perhaps?
*YES!* To prove that Rachel is the powerhouse of the UA-cam cell. 💜

Omg this is literally the cutest thing ever! The little ruffle makes them look so mushroomy but like still wearable, it's just perfect! Marry me mushroom sleeves!
I think one garment is perfect btw, this way we can truly admire every creation of yours! And I'd rather see you as happy creative tornado Rachel enjoying what she made than burnt out overworked self-doubting Rachel who has bitten off to much so I wholeheartedly support one sewing project per video!
I wholeheartedly agree!! Take it one step at a time!
When using an acrylic or fabric paint on cloth, a layer of gesso under the area you intend to paint on is great. It prevents the paint from seeping through the backside of the fabric, can prevent bleeding, and increases paint durability. It also stiffens the fabric a bit, which can be a downside. There are also great fabric mediums intended to be mixed with paint for craft purposes. The sleeves turned out so great, I love them!
Oooo noted
I've used the fabric mediums mixed with acrylic. They are great and make the paint flexible so it is less prone to cracks. Just be sure to iron it on low (with some paper to protect your work) after!
I realise I watch these videos like my dad watches sports. When you added the cream band around the base of the sleeves I barked “CUTE!” at my screen with the utmost focus and sincerity.
Haha exactly !

I have just had a similar realization! I am a newbie, I started sewing for real only this spring because I've always been so intimidated by it. My mom sews a lot and she makes it seem so complicated, and all the sewing I've ever done has been at school where I was graded and there was so much pressure and you needed to do everything The Right Way™ or you would fail. But then I suddenly, on a whim, (or maybe after watching a million of yours and Bernadette Banner's videos) I decided to sew a dress based on a very vague description I saw on Instagram. I didn't really have a pattern, I just experimented, and that made me realize that I can do whatever I want, however I want. Does it always turn out great or the way I want to? No. But like, it doesn't matter? There are no rules. I can experiment and try and see what happens. I'm learning so much, I'm having so much fun and I have sewn a pair of trousers that is literally one of my favourite garment that I own. I think your approach to sewing is really inspiring, and I love the mushroom sleeves so much!
"Who needs that much toe hair?"
Well, he is named Frodo.
Touche 😂😂😂
Ha!

Oh my- 😆

An 1890s ghost somewhere:
*crying "I'm so proud! Our daughter appreciates ✨The Sleeves ✨"
Also, re: making mistakes in sewing is important: In my current project (1940s french knickers) I messed up and sewed the french seam all the way up on the wrong side. So now they open on the right instead of the left, and suddenly the awkward hopping to not fall over when putting them on is solved! Moral of the story, sometimes mistakes are Learning Experiences and sometimes the thing you learn is that your new way is better (and your bad balance is not symmetrical 😁)
I feel your pain! I have so many botched projects but those are what I have learned the most from and usually end up loving best. That is why I appreciate Rachael's channel so much, she shares her process and mistakes as well as her wildly funny and charming personality.
Just when you said, "I'm going to be a little easier on myself." I was telling my hubby that if I ever met you I was going to tell you to be easier on yourself because you are an amazing person.

@Charlotte Surrey Yup, 20°C is pretty much the limit (Canadian here).
As a South African, I agree. That is quite warm.
Ok, first: those sleeves are, as the poets would say, "stinking cute".
Second: thank you for exposing my ears to "Country Toads". In a good way or a bad way? I still don't know.
You should totally start a series called “I sort of know what I’m doing” where you go back to projects you’d like to try again or do things you wanted to do but didn’t think you had the skill 😀
I'd love that.

Ooh yes!

The sleeves look so cute! The "stem" fabric you added I think really helps, it looks more finished and intentional. As usual, you are fun and funny and never change and I personally like a video where you just make one garment.

i personally LOVE the "simpler," one item makes, whether that be sewing or crafting like the book nook video :3
As a seamstress, I want to say that you are 100% correct with not being hard on yourself for your mistakes. ESPECIALLY when you are learning. If you are happy with the outcome, and if you made something you like and will wear, then you absolutely succeeded and nailed it. I love seeing all your projects, they are so creative, they inspire me to try more creative projects too 🙂
Man, it's so nice to hear support of sewing coming from a nice internet person. As I stare into my closet slowing filling up with dresses I've made, some of which I like, most of which I'd like to burn, it's reassuring to hear that it's fine to dive in. I wish many good bedspread/sheet finds to all the sewing people here (since real fabric is expensive and environment etc).

@@PatiNagy there were plenty of sleeves in that time that used a full yard of fabric, each.
Which shows just how expensive they would have been. Less than a yard for the bodice, two yards for the sleeves. If you were poorer, that’s a significant expense.

Please could you make a Ancient Greek gods vintage style video. So looking at your wardrobe and come up with ideas for what the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus would wear. Athena; Artemis; Demeter; Hades; Persephone; Hestia; Dionysius; Hecate; Apollo; Poseidon; Aphrodite; Hermes and Eros would all be brill to see you create outfits for!! 😊
On top of other Miss Frizzle comparisons going on in the comments, I will also point out that "take chances, make mistakes, get messy" is practically the order of the day around here.

Who else immediately hits Rachel's like button before the video plays?!?!
I love it. The sleeves are ADORABLE. And yes, they totally read as mushrooms.
I love that the reveal of a lot of Rachel's projects involve her frolicking with the flowers
Yes it adds to the whimsy of the project seems like a modern online sewing circle type site but craftier than typical how to videos.
"Basically...I want to take the forest...and wear it as clothing." This is truly my life's goal.
I love what you said at the end about not being afraid to just go for it and make mistakes! I'm a professional seamstress and watching your channel has actually inspired me a lot. In the past I kinda avoided making myself stuff, or doing too much experimentation outside the structure or "rules" of what I knew was "the right way" to do things. I got scared of taking risks. Now I'm a lot more comfortable kind of making it up as I go along and I think it's actually improved my work a lot. So thank you!
I think if you got one of those round sponge paint brushes and "distressed" the edges you could use it as a stamper for spots when you needed it! No idea if that makes sense or if it would work but an idea, love you Rachel!!!
