    Color me highly impressed by the ignition reliability of this gun. Surely the biggest problem with .22 revolvers besides running out of ammunition is light striking. Going 100% is close to unbelievable.
    Of the good number of rimfire revos I've had, only one was this reliable; coincidentally or not, also a Colt.
    It was a Colt Trooper .22. They built a couple of thousand supposedly for police training to transition to the Official Police and Trooper .357 guns (not to be confused with the later Mk III and V). These are E-frame guns, the same as the Python but they pre-dated the snake.
    At the time, I had both the rimfire and magnum guns. One day at the club, I got to shooting the .22 for quite some time. Before I knew it, I'd expended something like 500 rounds or more.
    I would hazard that the lack of rim recessing helps with ignition. Those recesses can quickly get clogged with firing residue and I know on my Smith Kit Gun, it quickly becomes necessary to positively thumb the rounds in with some emphasis to make sure they'll go bang.
    Liking the looks of that double action trigger, too. The new Cobras that we've tried have had surprisingly good DA racks and we've had more than one lady student settle on a new Cobra has her first gun in part because of that (the other being the frame size being so suitable for smaller hands).

    • @buffalosoutdoors
      @buffalosoutdoors  11 місяців тому +1

      This is my first Colt .22 caliber revolver. I am impressed with it. Some have reported ignition issues with these revolvers but they also demonstrated very light trigger pull weights. It makes me wonder if Colt hasn’t stiffened the springs up a bit in these newer ones to eliminate that issue. I don’t know if that is the case or not. Either way this one with its stouter pull is setting off every ammunition I put through it. Thanks for the great comment.

      I have been looking all over the internet. Wondering why on earth the cylinders had non recessed holes. And you are the only answer that I found that is actually convincing. What a good answer and good reason. And the fact that it probably does help cleaning up is also a great feature.

      Recessed chambers were specifically used with 22lr back in earlier times when balloon head cases and folded rim cases were used, and the case rims were weaker. It aided with ignition and protected the fragile rim and compound. It helps prevent the rim from expanding outwards on firing pin impact and contains it better. You can see it on many revolvers and semi autos. With today’s much better 22lr ammo it isn’t really needed, but, nor has it ever been known to detract from reliable ignition.
      I guess my main question would be; what 22 ammo or guns are you using that it makes you feel like a revolver shooting 22 without ignition issues for a basic range session is a big deal? I can’t remember the last time I had a 22lr round fail to fire at this point. That’s through 10/22’s, Mark 4’s, LCR’s, NAA mini’s, Beretta 21’s, and on and on. Sure, maybe if I switch to the bottom of the barrel bulk packs I might see one failure in an afternoon of shooting, but I don’t shoot that, so I don’t see any.
      The last point would be that it is these non-recessed pythons that have been having ignition issues apparently, and maybe solved it by increasing the hammer spring weight. 5-6 lbs for a single action target revolver is pretty heavy to have to go to so that you get reliable ignition, certainly more than many other single action 22 pull weights.

    • @jbinsc
      @jbinsc 10 місяців тому

      @@JimYeats early Colt .22’s did not have recessed chambers. The brass is stronger now but the rimfire case is basically manufactured the same. The balloon head case reference concerned early centerfire cartridges.
      The Colt lock work is different than S&W, it requires a lot more work to balance out the V spring. And the trigger sear angles are much different. They feel much different.
      The heavy single action is because of the drop test laws mandated in some states. The Colt can be tuned much lighter, my KCT .22 is about 2.5 lbs.
      In the 1930’s Colt revolvers dominated National Match competition (the single action was easier to cock than the long action S&W) but they abandoned the Officer’s Model Match revolvers when semi autos started winning in .22 and the Colt National Match 1911 was used for both centerfire and .45 competition.

    Buffalo I believe it is heavier to deal with the light strikes and here is why. I purchased one in December of 2023 most likely the same run as yours and my trigger pull weights are 4.9pounds average of 3 single action pulls and 9.6 pounds average of 3 double action pulls. Though a friend of mine who has an early 2021 model which does have light strikes that we have been experimenting with to determine if it is trigger or a specific brand of ammo or a certain chamber in the cylinder has 3.2pound single action and 8 pounds double action. Interesting enough only the double action in his pistol has misfires. As usual GREAT video and detail and you beat me to the video as I was down and out sick for a while but on the mend now.

    Hi Buffalo, very interesting video, it is nice to see a rimfire revolver tested like it needs to be tested. The gun seems accurate but I've seen you shoot with this kind of result with snubs as well, so the hand is good. Considering the gun per se, the fact that an outdoorsman's gun's rear sight needs a special tool to be adjusted isn't the best thing in the world and I wonder what the guys at Colt thought when they decided to build the rear sight this way. It is lighter than the 617 but I'm not of the idea I'd replace the 617 with this revolver, not as long as the rear sight remains the way it is.

    • @buffalosoutdoors
      @buffalosoutdoors  11 місяців тому +1

      You make good points. There are advantages to it as a target gun. It doesn't have clicks so you can dial it in more finely but then there is the whole needing a tool thing. And of course the set screw is very small and could be easily stripped out or lost if removed. It is odd that they chose this type of sight. Thanks for the great comment.

      Mines back at Colt now, on 25 business days, for a broken trigger return spring. Only took 4400 rounds. Colt refused to send the part, so just waiting on them to do the 5 minutes of work and send it back…

Ran about 200rds through the Colt. Ejection was starting to hang up but nothing I couldn't clear with a firm palm strike to the ejection rod. Still too stiff to eject with just your thumb. Before sending it in the ejection was frozen after a 30rds. I had to push each casing out individually with a chamber flag. The Beretta unfortunately was a hot mess.

    I would like to have seen some chronograph shots to evaluate the pressure loss at the cylinder gap.
    My 22lr Heritage Rough Rider with 6" barrel loses enough pressure that the 4.75" barrel model achieves higher velocities.
    I'm sure that the Colt has an improved cylinder gap tolerance than the Heritage - but I was curious about how much better efficiency.

    As the trigger goes, mine is also somewhat stiff but I’ve found it’s easing up a bit after shooting 3-400 rounds. Hopefully, after I get a few more range trips behind me, the trigger will loosen up. I also agree with your assessment of the narrowness of the trigger, I’m thinking that there’s gotta be a wider target trigger or one of those old-timey target adapters… we’ll see!
    Really good review, I subbed!

    For zeroing purposes, I've tried about a dozen different brands of ammo in my attempt to get a grouping under 3-inches from a rest at 25-yards. With a single-action trigger pull that exceeds the factory standard of 5 pounds, it's virtually impossible. I'd sure like to see Power Custom make a jig adapter for this revolver so that the sear can be recut for a lighter pull.

    I actually like the fact that this revolver is trimmed down a little more than the 617. When it comes to .357 or larger I’m not necessarily a fan of seeing metal removed but on a .22 LR you can get by with a much smaller frame. I like though that they kept it big enough to still be considered a full-size revolver. Thank you for your content Buffalo. God bless you and your family!

    That is one georgeous revolver!!! However, the single action trigger pull is about double what it should be. My S&W model 17 22LR single action trigger pull is 2lbs and I never have a light strike.

      Most of the videos and written reviews I've seen say the same thing. That's why I said in the video that this one has a heavier trigger pull than what others are reporting. I just don't know for sure why. Other than for sighting in I'll never use the SA mode but I'd still like to know.

    For nearly 1000 dollars the quality of my colt was poor trigger pull very heavy. I sent the gun back to colt when it came back trigger pull much better but now bad grit an was skipping timing. This not only my opinion but two of my friends had same problems was sent back to colt for the second time. I'm waiting for the return I hope all Issues will be resolved.

    Got a couple of snakes I had to get this one! Love it, Thanks for the great video. I also picked up a speed beez speedloader kit for it, it's pretty cool. Has 10 circles of 10 rounds and a spot for the loader You could preload the box before heading to the range and drop them right in.
    I also have the Smith & Wesson 617 6-in barrel 22LR. I like the colt better, the Smith seems to be spitting lead abnormally and the timing/cylinder might be off and not lining up, as I get a welded lead buildup on the left side around the forcing cone.

    Wow. Clockwise rotation? Do all colts rotate clockwise? My first gun is a s&w 63 22 6 shot. Last gun I’d ever part with for purely sentimental reasons. I’d love to have a newer 8 shot but like I said I’d never give mine up. Also had a 686 in 357 until somebody stole it and would def buy a 686 over a python. THIS gun though is too cool. I just love the looks of it. I’m sure it’s way heavier than my 63 but I can’t get over how beautiful that gun is.

    I just shot my 6" KC .22 and was very impressed with the accuracy. The gun needed no sight adjustments. I did notice, as you pointed out, that the trigger pull was much heavier than the 4.25" I bought last year. (And I did get an occasional FF from certain makes of ammo.) I prefer your paper punching over the steel targets. You can get a better idea of the gun's capabilities when on paper. I don't know who these people are with 2 lb 617 pulls but my 617, 6-shot, no hole has a similar pull as my new KC. It is still very new. Do you wear special safety glasses when shooting iron sights to see the rear sight better? (I got old.)

    "How many DA .22 revolvers do you need?!?!?"
    Buffalo: ALL of them! 😜
    Seriously speaking, what frame did they build it on, Buffalo? Looks like the D frame as with the Detective Special/Agent? That would make it a re-named Diamondback.
    In any case, Colt should bring back the Diamondback in .22, .38 Special and, maybe, .22 Mag. Give it a beavertail type hammer (like the Python, Officers Model Match and the Diamondback had)
    BLUED, please!
    Good shooting. Of course, .22s are notoriously picky about what they like. Looks like a good start, though.
    I'll check out "Cranky Gun Reviews" You referred me to George at "Target Suite" a few years ago and I have enjoyed his channel since then.
    Thanks, Buffalo

      ALL OF THEM is exactly right. I just can't help myself Gary. Embarrassingly, I don't know Colt frame sizes, I'm a S&W guy and this is my first Colt DA revolver. I've shot the new King Cobra, Python and Anaconda but I don't know Colt's frame size names. I have a lot to learn if I decide to get into collecting Colts like I do the S&Ws. I still watch George too, he's a good one!

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 11 місяців тому

      @@buffalosoutdoors Well, the D frame Colts (Detective Special, Police Positive Special, Diamondback) are a little smaller than S&W K frame, larger than a J frame. The "I" frames and "E" frames are a little larger than the K frame (actually the same size as the L frame S&W). "I" frames have a frame mounted firing pin, E frames have a hammer mounted firing pin. Otherwise they are the same. Generally, .38s and .22s had hammer mounted firing pins, .357 magnums had frame mounted firing pins. They ALL have frame mounted firing pins now (with transfer bars) since 1969.
      I like my .22 DA revolvers also! I have 2 S&W J frames (Model 34 and 43) a K frame Model 17 and a Colt Officer's Model Match E frame.
      I had a Colt Diamondback .22 in the 70s. I wanted a .38 Special but all I could find was a .22 LR. I ended up trading it for a S&W Model 19 2-1/2", which I still have and carry. Who knew the .22 Diamondbacks were going to turn out to be the more valuable?!?!? 🤦🏼‍♂
      I rarely sell or trade guns because of experiences like that.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 11 місяців тому

      @@buffalosoutdoors And I am not sure the frame size on the Anaconda .44 Magnum. Colt had a larger frame size for their "New Service" revolvers. I think that is what it is. I have a Colt 1917 .45 ACP which is on the New Service frame. They're huge! Bigger than S&W N frames.
