At age 65, every single Tuesday is interval session so that's my "out of comfort zone". I ran 2:39 in 1991 London marathon so that's 6 min pace, now I'm trying to reach that on my intervals. Puff puff.

QD: left my comfort zone by passing 45k in weekly mileage, while training for wings for life...mistakes were made, so didnt end up achieving what I trained for, but damn, it felt good, running consistently more and more, painless, getting to my fastest and beating all of my past times, my moods and depression, leaving everything, every worry, every thought on the road/trail 5 times a week

Seth, I havent done a marathon since 2012. I plateaued at around 3h30 but my PB is 3h22 for this distance. I have been increasing my distance using your guide. Already I can feel that I am going to lower my PB for the marathon because even the long run peak distance of 25km the PB time came down. I also do not wanna run the same times I ran before taking a break from marathons. I wanna lower my PB and their aim for a sub 3hour marathon. All of this is possible with your advice and running fellowship. Thank you Mr De Moor.

I believe in the slogan, be comfortable to get uncomfortable! It's all about believing in the process. Doing a training plan from beginning to end seeing the improvement and being able to hit the targeted times is all in the process. It's just believe and succeed! Envisioning the finished product crossing that finish line at your targeted time makes the training process magical! Thanks Seth!!!!

QOD: I got out of my bicycling comfort zone this year! Always been a strong runner but cycling has been my weak point over the years. I used to only be capable of cycling about 20 miles or so before getting knee pain or hip flexor strains. This year I trained very slowly and built up to longer rides, eventually incorporating vertical, and now I have a regular cycling routine with about 100 miles per week and 8,000 or more vertical! I actually recommend to people training at high volumes, if you learn to cycle a few days a week and build that into your training it could help avoid injuries from running too many miles. Good luck to everyone racing this summer, cheers!

      @@christophermyers9427 there are several reasons I suppose. In no order of importance;
      1. As I get older (approaching mid-40s), injuries from contact sports take longer to heal
      2. Running now I find to be the most efficient in reaching my fitness goals. Swimming and walking while excellent, take far longer
      3. Group activity sports are now sadly curtailed due to the current pandemic
      4. My wife is currently in a battle with cancer and running gives me a bit of time during the day to clear my head, recharge and be ready to support her each day.
      5. Oh and I like running shoes.

After running my first marathon in 2:51:43, I opted for higher mileage that was decently outside my comfort zone (with a peak of 80 miles as opposed to the previous peak for my first marathon of 65-70 miles) in order to prepare for my goal which was sub 2:37. I also ran additional long runs over 20 miles to prepare myself for the full distance. I ended up dropping over 20 minutes off my PR at the Glass City Marathon with a time of 2:30:49! Going out of my comfort zone was the key to this success.

Dewa here! For me, this past track season is when I really stepped outside my comfort zone- especially in hurdles! During this crazy time, I had to take a leap of faith and challenge myself in something I had never done before, but I am so glad I did because I found a new passion for track and field- especially hurdles that I never would have discovered if I didn't try track this year!
Dadddy here! i step outside my comfort zones whenever i reach a high level in a particular sport or discipline then, instead of specializing in that sport or discipline which certainly would be easier to get better and better in, i switch sports or disciplines ensuring that my ego never gets bigger by ongoing successes. instead, i become what i call, "An Endless Beginner,"...

Best example I can think of is when I crested the 60 mile/week mark. Ultimately it didn't pay off because my marathon (Chicago 2020) was canceled, but it was still valuable to push myself beyond that mental and physical barrier. Now I know I can do it and stay healthy while pushing the mileage, and that gives me a huge boost.

On my DGR race day I think my stress level spiked my HR. I hit my target splits for the first 10k, but with an unexpected 160+ BPM for that first hour, I just couldn’t keep going. I had to walk. But I started running again. And then walked some more, but most importantly STARTED RUNNING AGAIN. My brain wanted to quit because I wasn’t going to achieve any of my goals, but I kept going all the way to that finish line. I learned an important lesson, and got stronger mentally more than physically.

I think I mainly owe it to the big mileage I did in the winter of 50-60 mile weeks consecutively (not nearly as much as you seth haha) as well as interval training and high intensity workouts that I had to do all alone. QD: A comfort zone that I have left is actually leaving the sport of running. Persistent injuries and an interest in cycling led me to try out cycling this spring/summer season. It was really hard to make the switch because cycling is a much more dangerous and tactical sport. I had to learn how to go around corners, draft off other riders, avoid crashing, and do all of this at really high speeds. It was pretty scary, but worth it because it allowed me to compete again after my running career was ended.

It gave me paces / paces for distances that I didn't think I was capable of - no way Jose!! And yet, I kept doing it. Even when I didn't actually hit the target, I was dang close - and the results/ improvements have been CRAZY! Just blows my mind. I set PRs in the Half and 5k distances. Now I switch gears, using the same app for my very first FULL - focusing on completing the distance *feeling good* vs worrying about speed.... although who am I kidding, we're always worried about speed, right?! 🤣

QD: for me it has to do with dissecting the last race and detecting issues to work on the following weeks. Forcing myself to do some strength work was one of them and also including longer distance intervals (2 to 5k) to improve endurance at faster paces. 3x3km interval session do take you out of your comfort zone that's for sure.

Hey Seth. I know when I am leaving the comfort zone when my 6.a.m. split run days kick in. Getting out of that bed when the rain is hitting the window.. These early days in training create the mental strength you will need deeper into training for those tough workouts. Looking at the workouts from your last training block that were key to training and I emphasise to runners to keep a diary of not just training but their sleeping and nutrition. When you hit a session or a time trial that goes to plan...what did you do in the previous days that created this. Did you taper well, sleep well, what was your fuelling prior to this session/race.time trial. These are critical building blocks that is important to monitor.
Again to hit those new goals and PR/PB you need to go deeper into your overall training i.e. Training plan, recovery, nutrition, strength and conditioning and massage plan. When you are increasing your volume and intensity, how many of us in a 12/16 week training plan might decide to get a massage from a massage therapist? Above all, The best advice I can give is as Seth would say" know thy self". It takes time to achieve our goals so PATIENCE and CONSISTENCY will
help to get you to the next PR/PB....Hope this was insightful advice.....Onwards and Upwards....

Nice drone shots. Do you have a license or something that allows you to use a drone in the city and other locations.

I left my comfort zone by training in a whole different way. I started training by heart rate. I noticed my vo2 max increasing and I can breath more efficiently and longer. I haven’t noticed too much improvement in speed but I’m sure it’s coming.

QD: I opened my season with a 11:14 for the 3200. I decided right then and there that I was going to qualify for state. I was then able to cut my time to a 10:08 and not only qualify, but placed top 8.

QD: I think taking a calculated risk. I went for a 2 hour run as a high schooler and ended up running 16 miles during it. I was actually a little scared doing it and I know some would call be stupid but I know it helped me a lot aerobically.

Real question- how much time does it add to your runs having to set up and get those shots

QD: I get out of my comfort zone by looking what I am doing in the future and forgetting everything I did before, so I only focus on whats ahead, not what is in the past

QoD: in going for a BQ, I had more long runs at max distance for me (18 miles) with over 60% of those miles sub-marathon goal pace.

You probably need to run 1:20 or faster on the PPM downhill portion which would put you sub 3:30. That would give you a great shot at defending your title

QD: I am leaving the deep south, going to 10000’’ ft of elevation and running a mountain race up there. I come from Nola, so literally below sea level and I run 1/2 marathon road races. This will be first time running a mountain trail race and running at 10k ft of elevation

Seth, you need to improve your downhill running. Great focus on the uphill but you need more "controlled," not reckless, abandon on the downhill. Rooting for you!

I have kept my training logs from the last 25 years. I am using my last successful training program to prepare for this next ultra. The system worked in November and hopefully for this season. At 72 years I do not know how many more long events I have. 24 days until the start. Turn the nob! Keep playing!
