    QOD: Run every day and train at your current, not goal, race paces.
    As for your Pikes Peak training cycle- I like the down cycles and 3 weeks of taper. Don’t forget to do some downhill technical training...that may be the difference of where you stand on the podium!

    QD: “Completing this marathon is not going to give you a sense of accomplishment the way training and preparing for a marathon does.” In 2001 (a couple weeks after graduating HS), I ran SD R&R marathon but didn’t train for it. Hated the entire thing, didn’t feel the sense of accomplishment everyone talks about at the end. Didn’t run another one until 2019. This time, trained with a Hanson plan, enjoyed every minute of the marathon and still have such a huge sense of pride and accomplishment.

    QD: I took a decade completely away from any running and focused on bodybuilding and powerlifting. I’m in my second year back at age 35 and it has been a struggle to say the least. I always think of how good I could have been at this point if I never stopped .....so the one thing I would tell my 18 yr old self would be “You’re going to have a small period where you lose your passion for running and hate being skinny in a few years from now, but trust me Don’t every stop running, training and racing!”

    • @shannonsides6017
      @shannonsides6017 3 роки тому

      I would have to counter this with, think about how strong you’ve gotten your legs to help prepare you from running injuries. Most runners neglect strength training so you’ve got a good base!

    • @ericwhite80five

      @@shannonsides6017 I would agree only to a point. The massive weight gain I acquired over the ten plus years made my return to distance running a very rough go thus far, plagued with a mild case of runners knee, shin splints, 10 month battle with Achilles Tendinitis and an accident where I rolled my ankle pretty bad. I use to be 120 ish pounds back in my prime running days, but upon my return starting off at 190 plus prices to very stressful on my body. Coupled with a decade in law enforcement which is brutal to the body on its own and its safe to say things have been less than smooth lol...I’ve since been slowly losing the weight and learning to adjust my training to be more sustainable and productive for my age and less resilient body.

    • @shannonsides6017
      @shannonsides6017 3 роки тому

      I gotcha! Running is hard on the body, especially with extra weight and a physical career. Have you been building your mileage up slowly? I will say, I’ve been running constantly since age 14 and I didn’t train well for the first twenty, so I am also constantly warding off injury bc of overuse injury and lack of strength training.

    • @ericwhite80five
      @ericwhite80five 3 роки тому

      @@shannonsides6017 I started running/racing at age 7 stopped at 23 and started back up at 33. I felt as though I was slowly building up and only got up to 9 miles for a long run and roughly 25-30 miles a week after about 8 months back in. I think I may have had to build even slower and focused more on weight reduction which I am just now doing lol

    Seth, this is super helpful! I have my first ever race in July, (I've never been interested in racing, don't know what got into me!), it's a half marathon and covers about 3100ft of vertical gain. Seeing how you are approaching your training is definitely helpful! I will only have 4 weeks to train properly as I'm nursing a knee injury at the moment; wondering if you can give any insight as to how to train effectively in a condensed window?

    QD: I’d tell my 18 yr old self that by far the majority of things we worry about never happen, and something we can’t possibly anticipate and so didn’t worry about is what took me by surprise at age 47-a benign brain tumor. Fortunately I had the mother of all headaches one day and 3 days later was in surgery for a meningioma (a type of brain tumor that is benign 99% of the time but can kill you if the location is inaccessible or dangerous). I consider myself very lucky and it’s till a lifelong practice to not waste time and energy and healthy worrying about things that probably won’t happen. In a way, that trauma brought personal growth because I made some decisions to do things I’d not have otherwise done. So later in life many good things came my way, including a late but very meaningful running career! Martha

    Seth i noticed in your videos when you are at the gym you wear the same shoes you run in and in this video you are wearing the Rebel v2's while you were squatting. A suggestion (many others suggest as well) is to take your shoes off when squatting and/or deadlifting. Running shoes actually can cause different types of injuries (ankle, back. etc.) with these lifts because they lean you forward. You want a more flat harder surface for these.

    QD: when I was 18 I would have loved to tell myself that not everything is about me. My father, may he rest, later in life told me as I was stressing about a staff meeting at work that not everything was about me and he was right. That meeting I thought was going to be all about me wasn't about me at all. That demonstrated to me how much importance I put on myself and my perspective started to change. Now trying hard to always put others before myself, especially my family, that lesson would have been better learned way earlier in life and sure would have made life much easier lol.

    Seth, one word of advice for Pikes Peak this summer. It’s common knowledge here in the Springs, that Matt Carpenter knew the trail better than anybody. He ran it pretty much every week and knew every twist and turn inside out. That was a huge advantage for him. Get down here and run it as much as you can. It will serve you well.

    I would tell my 18 year old self... don't slow down and don't let anyone slow you down, keep hammering... As Cam Hanes would say. For context, a lot of people get to a point and slow down when it comes to taking opportunities, or working long days, working out consistently then some of those people look back and can't get back to that same level of pace as we get older. Sometimes its better to stay ready so you don't have to get ready.

  • @haskellelephant
    @haskellelephant 3 роки тому

    On the squats, it might be a good idea to not do them in trainers. The springy foam makes it unstable. Instability isn't necessarily a bad thing. You could use instability to work on balance. However, there are better options for that, and adding instability takes away from the loading of the muscle. If you want to work on balance then likely a bulgarian split squat will be better as you will have to balance on one foot. For working on strength alone, barbell back squat with solid ground contact (no springy shoes, and no plate for heel elevation) is the go-to exercise. For back squats, barefoot is fine, lifting shoes also work.

      bare feet is great, or converses (the toe box is pretty narrow though). It is important for the body, and also for the lift, you are wasting your strength with the sole's absorption of the impact instead of pushing hard on the floor and get the energy in return.
