Some notes about this video: 1. My Tanita scales that I use at home were surprisingly accurate compared to the scientific scales at the lab. The main thing was they followed the same pattern, _and_ showed my muscle was too low and fat too high, so they are a really useful tool for me to have. 2. Something I forgot to mention, regarding the Vo2 max score on my watch, I think it's taking into account my previous lighter weight (61kg) , instead of the weight I'm currently at (65kg). This would cause the Vo2 max predictor to be off because the score is given in comparison to body weight. 3. Since making this video I have learned that being strong (as in strong muscles) is better for long term health than being fit (as in being able to run fast and having a high Vo2 max). I will explain more about this in a future video soon. Thanks for watching! I appreciate you 🙏🏼

Hello Laura, thank you for this video❤ I used to be like this-lil’ muscle mass, more fat than is needed. I switched to macros counting two years ago-I counted for around 3 months and learned how to eat more protein and calories overall. This leads to massive recomposition in my body due the last two years. So now I’m on my highest muscle mass and lowest point in fat. Now I’m eating intuitivelly, but these 3 months of counting and learning was a big gamechanger, even that I’m exercising for over 10 years (running, HIIT, cycling, weights…etc.😊) Can’t wait to another video from you!
Great video Laura! You inspire so many people, myself included and it’s a good wake up call for this late 50s recreational runner that the older I get the more I need to strength train. I will have to find a way to enjoy it as much as I love my daily running and walking adventures 😂 Incidentally I switched watches from a Garmin to a Coros and overnight my estimated VO2 max dropped 15 points so I do suspect that Garmins use historic data. Thank you for doing these great videos, keep them coming! Best wishes from AU.
Hey sunny, its great to get your comment. Yes, I feel the same about finding the love for strength like I do for runs, but know I can make it happen. In fact, I am just off to the gym now for a weight training session.
Even though I am Dutch you are very easy to follow and listen to. I watched the whole video. A lot of information that got me thinking a couple of times and inspires me to work on myself.
Excellent video... and the hidden lesson is: don't ever ignore Garmin's HRV reading. In my experience a sudden dip in HRV is an ultra-reliable indicator of illness / short-term underlying issue. Perhaps go again on the VO2 Max test ;-)
Excellent video. Thanks Laura! As a former road racing cyclist, I lived by my power numbers for quite a few years, and also did some lab tests too so your experience resonated with me. Now, I don't even have a computer on the bars and just enjoy riding.
Thanks checking the lactate threshold, if used right on the Garmin device it is very useful to set up heart rate zones. Best of luck lossing those few kg of weight, you will feel much better and will see an improvement on training.
Love love love this video!!! I love all of the information and how you are sharing your journey while encouraging us to consider the big picture of our future health! Spot on!!! Dang! And, WELL DONE!
💯 great video. Really interesting and plenty of takeaways (not fish n chips!). Looking forward to how the series continues. I’m on a similar health improvement journey and would love to do these tests, but for now I’ll rely on my Garmin for the data.
❤️your video content…especially in the sense that the data is based on your age, not of the expectations of a “ fitness model 21 years of age”… Learned so much from your video🌸
@Laura Try There's nothing I can do for the lung disease, I'm on the strongest meds I can have I'm active, walking 9000 steps most days, working in my workshop But grandad body is starting to take over I also have Fibromyalgia, so don't seem to have the energy to push myself too hard, or I crash and have to recuperate, I tried weight training for a few months, but just got more exhausted I thought about Yoga, but watching this video made me think it might not cut it? Any help I can get would be appreciated 🙏
Thanks! Since I live in Canada, I don't have access to even a family doctor even less all of these tests, but I do have a Garmin. I am a dozen years older and male and close to overweight after too much Christmas and winter food, but often lose some kilos during my atheist lent. It's very good to know the lactate threshold test is so good. I have been relying on Jack Daniel's VDot system so far and am looking forward to compare the two once the snow and ice have melted enough for a flat running surface to become available. I have heard that Garmin overestimate VO2Max before, but my scientific mind still thinks that multiple measurements should be better than a single test. However, for the watch to be accurate it ought to know the level of effort of each run (max or not) as well as your precise weight on each day. I guess these measures will all improve with time. As for pushing harder, the limit is in our mind and I learned this in an aikido class 20 years ago. After an exhausting warm up, we were asked to turn around and carry the person behind us once around the mat. Behind me was one of the super muscular coaches and I felt like I couldn't even walk around. He told me I had this and I did, thrice in fact as we took turns with that exercise. It was all in the mind. I do need to do more strength training too. XC-skiing in the winter has helped me since it is very intense and I could literally see the triceps growing, but I don
Good video Laura. I'm sure it shocked quite a few people to hear that you are clasiffied as overweight, despite looking fitter than most people your age. That's the thing, we are used to setting low standards, I mean after we hit 35 or so, we are expected to slow down, "we're not 20 anymore" we say. So it's OK, as long as we're not proper fat, we see ourselves as "normal", not overweight! When in reality when we are 40, the body can still perform say at 80% or even 90% of what it could at 20yrs old, but we accept a much larger drop as normal cause it takes dedication and organization to still to exercise when you have a family, work etc. But it's not that the body can't do it. Regarding the 10 point discrepancy between he watch and the lab, one possible reason can be the HR reading. Those people who report close agreement beween their watch and the lab test use chest HR straps, so their watch uses accurate HR readings (that are essential for the VO2 max calculation). Do you use a a chest strap, or optical arm strap? Because the watch HR reading can be very wrong for many people. If you were using an external strap, then yeah, the 10 point difference is weird.
I totally have been binging on your to started following you along time ago but you tube stoped notifications for me I was searching for blood test videos as I’m having heath issues and found you again I absolutely love your channel
Thanks Laura, love love love your videos. I upped my exercise about five months ago (weights at home and cycling) and have lost weight (from 57 to 52kg so nearly 10% but some of that was bloating) and gained muscle. Following your videos I increased my protein which has supported my muscle growth. About a week ago I started taking creatine, it would be early to see results but I think my arms are looking bigger. I’m hoping creatine will help with recovery as the training does make me tired and sore sometimes. Now I’m inspired to get these tests. Exercising to failure is scary. I’ve only done that once recently cycling up a hill - some people checked in on me because I must have looked like I was having a heart attack and it took at least half an hour to recover! I’m a 47 year old woman if helpful. I am also planning for menopause. Osteoporosis runs in the family so I’ll take hrt when the time comes, vitamins d and k2 for now.
Excellent video, Laura! Thanks for putting your body through the paces, for our education. I’m a year+ into my fitness journey (43yo), and I think I’m also “skinny-fat”, with good VO2 of 39.😢
Really enjoyed this scientific test and a hard to face but honest review. I wish we could all do these tests. But we'll done on you for being positive about looking for a healthy long term outcome.
Superbly done! Enjoyed watching and learning. I gotta get back to doing my squats, did them most of my adult life. Unfortunately my love of mountain biking seems to override all other forms of exercise!
Excellent video, really helpful for us amateurs and great message for long term health …. Yes I love sugar, no it’s not good for long term quality of life
Thank you very much for posting this video. Very thoughtfully done and insightful and encouraging g for someone like me who has never done a proper fitness test.
Interesting stuff LT. I studied sports science at uni and we did some of those tests in the lab, the VO2max one is disgusting! I’ve been doing more strength training in the last 5 years to offset sarcopenia, though running and yoga still feature in my weekly workouts. It’s all about getting a balance, and you’re right in that the exercise we dislike is often the best for us!
Vo2 max = awful! I used to do strength training but have never liked it. I stopped a few years ago when the gyms closed for lockdown and never went back - kidding myself i was ok with a bit of this and that. These tests were what I needed to get me back. And now I realise it's not a matter of enjoyment really, but essential, especially someone of my body type. Ps - great work for doing your strength training Anni 🙌🏼
@@LauraTryUK I think if your strength training program elicits decent progressive overload then you’ll see the improvements. My ‘gains’ were so tiny to begin with I didn’t think I was improving (also too easy to compare yourself to others, which is dreadful!). With consistency you get to the stage where those micro-wins keep you doing it. I’m still in awe of your press ups and splits! 🙌🏼
I'm in week 2 of my new weight training plan and enjoying it. I like what you said about the micro-wins! I can still do the splits. I am no longer good at pushups since my weight gain last year. Back to it 💪
Thank you for making this informative video. You did a great job illustrating what someone can expect and how the results correlate to your personal health. I am 47 and lately I have noticed my exercise levels falling off. After watching your video, I feel more confident scheduling the fitness testing offered at my local university. Plus I have been considering purchasing a watch to supplement my Wahoo TickrX, and it looks like the Garmin watches are very accurate. 👍👍
Very interesting video! I have around a year to go before I hit the big 40, and am worried about my performance deteriorating on the roads and trail running. I smashed all my PB's except the 1km during my 30s, so for me personally I got stronger in this decade than I was in my 20s. I would love to do these tests next year when I enter the next decade, and loved watching your tests and particularly the ones where you compare the results with your Garmin. Going to watch the blood tests video next...
super interesting ... and thorough. I also recently had a lactate test and it is reassuring to have some kind of objective measure to train against. Having lost a bunch of weight in the last two years, I discovered that hiding underneath the fat, I had lost a significant amount of muscle mass. Consistent and progressive weight training improved it tremendously in a matter of months. One curious bit in your chart of zones is where it says that the lower end of zone 4 should be sustainable for ~60min, but describes it as "over a marathon". I think that is a misleading mistake. Realistically -- and from personal experience -- the lower end of Zone 3 (on the cusp of Zone 2) in this chart is more appropriate for a marathon distance in a reasonably trained athlete.
That was a lot of information to take in, it was very interesting to do but as an overall price that very expensive but so is having PT, I really love wating you vid they just get more interesting as time go on, thanks for the very informative vid ❤
The things I do can be pricey Graham. My hope is that not everyone needs (or wants) to do them, but instead can take some value from them. And a bit of entertainment too. Although having my fat pinched perhaps doesn't class as entertainment 😆
This was such a great video! Debating on getting these tests done myself (actually scheduled them for the end of April) so its really interesting to see the difference.
It’s been about a year since you released this video. I’d be very interested in your updated tests and especially (assuming you’re fitter than a year ago) what you did to experience the improvement. Interesting video - thanks!
Thanks for including prices, charts and all that data. I'd just heard about the Cooper test, and I'd love to see you do a video on that. After watching this video, I researched fitness watches, and I think I want a better one. :-)
That was a great video, really informative and you explained things in a really nice way. I'm very keen to try these tests now myself, going to start saving up for a package deal.
Really well put together video, clear and concise with good explanations about each test. There are many different aspects to our overall health that you cover in this video. I'd really like to have the same tests taken just to see where I am at. Hope you can show great improvement in a years time, although you are already doing well 👍😇
This was an excellent video, I had expected this was going to be the typical female fitness UA-camr video where it's really just an excuse to show off their body, but it was nothing of the type. Excellent video, well narrated, and that British temperament that I like, unlike the over hyped American style of videos that seems to be so common. Think I'm going to subscribe.
I loved this video. All those tests take me back to my Sports Science study days. And oh my goodness a VO2 max tests are awful. I also have been thinking about getting my bloods done with Phil Richards for a number of years now, so I'll be checking that video out next.
This was randomly suggested to me. You have a new subscriber. I really enjoyed this very data driven factual and open video, it must have been difficult to be so transparent about your weight. You look very good and are in excellent health, I think. I will work on weight lifting too!
Very interesting and educational! This got me thinking about the skinny fat thing that you brought up. Even though, I run, my upper body probably could use way more muscle mass and a little less fat! Thank you !
should i ... get a garmin and a fitness membership. Looks like it 😅 Thanks for the test of the watch and all the insight on what is important about health and fitness
Thank you for sharing, I find all of this fascinating & would love to do similar tests, I'm 65yrs now & would like to get into peak condition in training for my 80's 😆 I will try out anything, yoga, handstands, deadlifting, sprinting, kettlebells, diving & underwater swimming (for breathhold training) trapeze (for fun) Your videos are so educational I look forward to what's next 👏👏👏
You sound fit as a fiddle, and also curious like me. Give some of the tests a try, they are fascinating. I recommend the body composition and lactate threshold.
Hey, Laura - wow such fascinating information. Also - so great to watch YOU do it. I can't imagine taking the VO2 MAX much less filming myself doing it so I really appreciate you showing us all how it's done. I wonder, though, are you having to mouth breath throughout the test? That would definitely make it a tougher challenge. Please let me know if you could breath though your nose or not. Thanks!
Thanks Laura. What Garmin watch do you use to measure VO2 Max and which watch in your opinion would be an even more accurate measurer as far as a watch. Thanks and keep up the good work
I've just been reminded how important it is to move, lift weights consistently and shedding those few extra kilos (going from v low health range in my 20-40s, to just over healthy into overweight in my late 50's, not a nice feeling knowing I'm technically skinny fat ! :((( thanks for all your efforts putting this info out there Laura, really appreciate it so much. Best to your mum and dad also :)
Did you do the lactate threshold test and VO2max test within only a few minutes apart? That is literally insane since both of them are very close to exhaustion. 10 points difference between the Garmin and the test seem excessive and something else might have gone wrong or triggered this. In any case great job!!
Always makes me happy to see you filming at your mom's home, now if we could just get her in more of the videos once in awhile :) PS: there is no way you look "overweight"
Just discovered you after looking for a Garmin watch - and I am glad I did. I'm 59 and starting my fitness journey.... I've pretty much decided to so 5K each day - but I'm also looking at being a UA-camr (Not Fitness - LOL - that would be a little embarrassing at this stage) - and I've funnily enough got the Sony ZV1 - and Rode Microphone - Adobe Premier Pro. So your videos have been hitting multiple areas of interest for me. Skinny Fat was interesting - I am wondering if it's possible to Run and build muscle (not Body Building muscle - just looking fit). Anyway I've subscribed. Thanks.
I just tend to do what feels good for my body and mind. That includes exercise that makes me feel good, and eating what feels good to me, sleeping well, etc. I think these tests would be good for those looking to succeed in health goals and train for fitness goals. I like my Fitbit for some of these data points, albeit probably not as accurate, but it's not the be all to how I am health wise. I really found the science of everything you discussed here. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us all Laura! ❤
I totally get it Apple Gal - I am/was the same - do what I felt I needed, but it seems I wasn't doing what was good for my long term health. I _need_ more muscle and I'm having to change the way I exercise _and_ eat. I would disagree with the tests being for sports people and health goals, I would say they are for everyone! Because doesn't everyone want advice on how to live a healthy life? Sorry if my reply is disagreeing with your comment, but with me learning all this stuff it's been such an eye opening experience.
@@LauraTryUK no need to apologize. It's OK to disagree. I think we can all have different viewpoints and ways of living. What works for one doesn't work for all. Take care Laura. 🙂

Keep up the good work I wish I had your enthusiasm to get back into it .
Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Hello Laura, thank you for this video❤
I used to be like this-lil’ muscle mass, more fat than is needed. I switched to macros counting two years ago-I counted for around 3 months and learned how to eat more protein and calories overall. This leads to massive recomposition in my body due the last two years. So now I’m on my highest muscle mass and lowest point in fat.
Now I’m eating intuitivelly, but these 3 months of counting and learning was a big gamechanger, even that I’m exercising for over 10 years (running, HIIT, cycling, weights…etc.😊)
Can’t wait to another video from you!
Thanks for all you do in making these videos.
wow! Thank you so muck Ken, this is so kind of you and really helps.
I really appreciate your support 🙏🏼
16:15 that's my favorite part... but maybe i'm biased. Great video!!
😜 it was very helpful for me in my research to make this video.
Thanks checking the lactate threshold, if used right on the Garmin device it is very useful to set up heart rate zones. Best of luck lossing those few kg of weight, you will feel much better and will see an improvement on training.
You are such an amazing woman - so honest and open - I true inspiration and role model for all woman (and men !)
You are so kind, thank you so much 🙏🏼
Love love love this video!!! I love all of the information and how you are sharing your journey while encouraging us to consider the big picture of our future health! Spot on!!! Dang! And, WELL DONE!
Absolutely fantastic video. No filler. All good info
💯 great video. Really interesting and plenty of takeaways (not fish n chips!). Looking forward to how the series continues. I’m on a similar health improvement journey and would love to do these tests, but for now I’ll rely on my Garmin for the data.
I think the Garmin is a good tool. And get your body composition measured if possible to see how much muscle you have - that is a great baseline.
❤️your video content…especially in the sense that the data is based on your age, not of the expectations of a “ fitness model 21 years of age”…
Learned so much from your video🌸
Laura, you're the best, thanks for doing this, it's certainly an eye opener for me, I'm 56 and have copd so fitness is a real struggle
sorry to hear you have that Ralfy. Is there anything you can do to make it better? And can you do any exercise at all?
@Laura Try There's nothing I can do for the lung disease, I'm on the strongest meds I can have
I'm active, walking 9000 steps most days, working in my workshop
But grandad body is starting to take over
I also have Fibromyalgia, so don't seem to have the energy to push myself too hard, or I crash and have to recuperate, I tried weight training for a few months, but just got more exhausted
I thought about Yoga, but watching this video made me think it might not cut it?
Any help I can get would be appreciated 🙏
Great video! Thanks for sharing, especially the comparison between these tests and what your Garmin showed, very interesting
I started working out this year after several surgeries and old injuries - Happy to see you taking care of your body. Good job, LT
Great work Sam, and thank you!
Wow, what an awesome journey. Thanks for sharing!!
I'm just a few minutes into the vid and I know I will love it. Thanks .
I totally have been binging on your to started following you along time ago but you tube stoped notifications for me I was searching for blood test videos as I’m having heath issues and found you again I absolutely love your channel
I loved this, the honesty, the information, all of it was so down to earth solid. Thanks for the great vid.
I’m a year+ into my fitness journey (43yo), and I think I’m also “skinny-fat”, with good VO2 of 39.😢
Great detailed video. It really is crazy how close a watch can get that just sits on your wrist
Thank you for sharing. Well done. Buen Camino 🙏
Thanks Josh.
ha! odd you say Buen Camino... how come?
Amazing journey, thanks so much for this video mate! Much love from Australia.
What an amazing video, super informative and motivating with full of only facts, thank you, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Really enjoyed this scientific test and a hard to face but honest review. I wish we could all do these tests. But we'll done on you for being positive about looking for a healthy long term outcome.
Great video, really enjoyed it and full of information. First one watched and subscribed.
This was so interesting, thanks Laura! I’m really glad you’re back.
Absolutely loved this! Very clear and informative as always. Looking forward to the one on blood testing.
Really, really good video from a ”normal” person’s perspective. Most of these videos are so focused on top athletes and performance, not on health.
Thanks so much for doing this comprehensive video. It provided me with valuable insights for my own health journey.
You're an absolute inspiration! Thank you for your videos and all the work you put into them :)
Back to it 💪
I really like the idea.. I think I have a poor relationship with myself..
Great video ❤. Highly informative and greatly put together. Superb
Bit of a shock to the system for eny one aging...... self included.... Great video @LauraTry keep'em rollin' and stay positive ! ! !
Love these kind of videos Laura! Can't wait for the next one :D
Much appreciated, sounds like the home scale and watch works.
For sure, I am so impressed with both and gives me even more confidence than I already had in using them.
This was such a great video! Debating on getting these tests done myself (actually scheduled them for the end of April) so its really interesting to see the difference.
Very cool! Are you going to see the guys at Surrey University?
It’s been about a year since you released this video. I’d be very interested in your updated tests and especially (assuming you’re fitter than a year ago) what you did to experience the improvement. Interesting video - thanks!
"No but it's fine" sums it up. Brilliant. Well done.
Thank you Maria 🙏🏼
Thanks for including prices, charts and all that data. I'd just heard about the Cooper test, and I'd love to see you do a video on that. After watching this video, I researched fitness watches, and I think I want a better one. :-)
Hey Ken, I will do the Cooper Test in a few weeks and make a video about it 👍
which watch do you currently use?
Super usefull video!!! Love You Laura!
Kudos, this was awesome and very informative!
Great video! Enjoyed it from start to finish
I'm pleased you liked it Williem 👊
Wooo LT still pounding it out also great content sister 👌🏽
Loving your Chanel - great inspiration to all of us 🙏🏽
Thanks so much Keef, I am pleased your enjoying the videos.
Thank you !
I think Mark needs to give you a nod back.. I watch both of your channels. Both really good
Love your videos. Thank you for these so informative 👏
should i ... get a garmin and a fitness membership. Looks like it 😅
Thanks for the test of the watch and all the insight on what is important about health and fitness
Laura you are excellent and I love your content.
Always makes me happy to see you filming at your mom's home,
now if we could just get her in more of the videos once in awhile :)
PS: there is no way you look "overweight"
I may not look overweight but that is what the stats and machine are saying so i need to pay attention Dave.
My mum my be making a video with me soon.
First time I've seen your videos. Excellent stuff. New subscriber!
Hey Lee, it's great to have you here, thanks so much for commenting and subscribing 🙏🏼
This is awesome, as I was planning to do the same thing quite soon. Just hoping my lungs just don’t jump out of my chest and run away!
as a cyclist you should whizz through this!
Keep me posted on how you do please?
I don't think these tests are easy for anyone! It doesn't hurt less, you just go faster.
Very good 👍 video amazing to see and hear these test. I look 👀 forward to doing some research to see how my body responds Thanks ☺️
Hello fellow Surrey dweller. I need to try this test aswell. I'm 34, not too far behind you. Will definitely subscribe.
Thanks.
The most important point is start straight away, which you always do. You are never too long, just interesting.
run Forrest, Run !! 😂. très intéressant Merci ! vidéo intéressante et humble.
Absolutely fascinating!
thank you very much for this video I was looking for a comparison of lactate threshold Garmin vs reality I run with garmin VOmax I don't care much it doesn't change but the lactate threshold is a bit important to me Because I run according to it and I'm very happy that it measures approximately the same Again thank you very much for this video
Awesome video LT
Thanks for your work and for this video
Really informative & interesting video. I'm hoping there's going to be an update and the series you mention builds over time.
I’m pleased you liked it. There will be an update in about 4-5 months. And yes to the ongoing series 😀
Thanks for the video. This was amazing.
You are amazing. What Garmin watch do you use? Keep it up, Lara.
