Juan Pablo - A physical copy of this game now retails for $35 in the US right now. I’m wondering if it still makes sense to pick up WRC8 for the Nintendo Switch when I don’t enjoy unfair challenges.
I know I'm 9 months late, but rally is not about being flat out, balls to the wall. Remember, slow is smooth, smooth is fast. You don't have to memorize any of the stages either. It definitely helps, but the co-driver is there to tell you exactly what is coming up. Either way, even if you did have to memorize it, it wouldn't be any different from other racing Sims. You aren't winning any races at spa without knowing the track lol
Nice review. I noticed it in the upcoming games on the e-shop recently and hoped it would be a decent port, but I'm also a bit surprised it hasn't been mentioned at all. Nintendo need to have many more Directs now that all these games are coming out, to little or no mention at all! I'm still having fun with Grid Autosport and the Witcher 3 is taking most my playtime, so I'll put this on hold for a bit, but I'll be sure to pick it up eventually :)
It's just a different style of game. This is more like GRID with everything set as hard as it goes. This is also just you racing against times etc. It's Semi-Sim Vs Full SIM both his games. GRID is easier to pick up and play. Mark
This game needs gamecube controller analogue trigger support. Its only currently being supported by Grid and one of the Trials games. In fact, Nintendo should just allow analogue triggers to be accessible on pro controllers. Would love to use something like an Xbox or playstation pad via adapter (or 8bitDo's pro plus).
I'm seriously considering picking this up as I'm a huge Rally fan but Grid Autosport on Switch has me hooked at the moment. One letdown though is the graphics for WRC 8 aren't as good as Grid Autosport and Grid Autosport supports 60FPS whereas WRC8 does not. I think I'll wait for a sale but thanks for the video. Videos like these definitely help in making an informed decision.
Excellent review but I didn't hear you say anything about gyro controls options. Over all this game sounds great and having an arcade seasons mode is important aside from a campaign mode so you can jump in & just play with friends so I will definitely be buying this physically.
Yeah, the seasons mode was a nice touch I thought. I was a little overwhelmed at first with the depth of the career mode, so definitely nice to have the option to tone the non-racing parts.
Thanks for the review! Is there support for GameCube analogue triggers. I prefer not to use digital trigger in simulation racing games, were precision is key.
I did some research and you can change the acceleration to the right stick for an analog option but GameCube controller analog triggers are not currently an option.
Thanks for looking into that. I appreciate it. The developers of Grid basically said it was a problem on Nintendo’s end. All third party controllers are registered as a Pro Controller with the system, and that’s why the system treats the triggers as digital triggers. When the system recognizes a GameCube control it also recognizes the analog triggers. This forces third party developers to build in GameCube support. Nintendo needs to patch their OS and allow support for analog triggers in third party controllers. Let me use my PS4 controller with my 8bitdo dongle, please.
I'm not a huge sim racing either but this looks really interesting. Also I'm pretty impressed by the visuals(the lighting in the night races especially).
Hello switch up. Before I watch this, how's the frame rate? I bought wrc 5 &. 6 on ps store and the framerate is so bad that I can't play it. I want some great racers for switch. I just bought grid for switch bought 2 days ago and it's really good. I actually have it set to performance mode and I do notice a fair amound of frame drops, especially when your in the middle of the pack, around other cars but it's doable. Hope wrc 8 has a demo.
I love a good racing sim, but didnt have a clue that this was coming to switch. This looks like a solid pickup for the switch! Its pretty damn impressive, considering some of the other racing games on the switch at the moment.
Nice, first rally car game I've seen on the Switch, need one to travel to work rn! Cheers for this Jace and Mark. Would you consider this as good as Dirt 4?
You know what would be awesome as if somebody made a rally game with a companion app where you can hand a family member or friend or girlfriend your iPad or tablet and they could use that as a map while you navigate the race
There was a weird mode in Dirt Rally for PSVR where you could have a friend do a minigame of sorts that would make calls come to you...or prevent you from getting the calls! I'd love to see that more, but it takes a lot of work to properly read out pace notes.
Great review! Got mine Pre Ordered here in the UK, Will be Interesting to see If the My Pre Order includes the Deluxe Edition DLC as no where in the UK Except the Switch eShop has that advertised so It may be a Digital only bundle. Just out of Interest does It have a Gamecube Controller Setting in the Settings menu like GRID Autosport does? Allowing for Analog Throttle/Brake?
I did some research and as I said you can change the acceleration to the right stick for an analog option but GameCube controller analog triggers are not currently an option.
Hi guys. Great review as always. But I have a concern that another viewer seems to have asked already... How does acceleration work on this version of the game? As the Switch only has digital inputs, how good do you control the vehicle during the race? Are there several acceleration options as with GRID or can you only use the L/R triggers? Otherwise, I am glad this turns out to be a pretty good version. But as I said, my purchase might depend on this acceleration options. Saludos
I did some research and you can change the acceleration to the right stick for an analog option. GameCube controller analog triggers are not currently an option.
Nice review! Gameplay looks great. Hoping the button config is as customizable as Grid, where I've found using the right analog is best for gas, while I leave braking and handbraking to ZL and L (shifting with ZR and R). This allows for analog gas while you brake at the same time (ABS on for digital brake input)
I did some research and you can change the acceleration to the right stick for an analog option. GameCube controller analog triggers are not currently an option.
Fellow drivers it's 40% off on Australian eshop now from 3/3 to 16/3. Thanks for the honesty Mark for letting us viewers know you 'are not the hugest fan of racing simulators' before jumping into the review. From what I have heard from the sim-racing community (not casual players who only care about good visuals) the game on competing platforms is a really solid title thanks to its dynamic weather, great track design, physics and immersion. Yes the switch version has downgraded visual for better performance but I personally prefer a stable frame rate over good looking trees for this type of game any day. Might need to try analog stick for better throttle control though and that definitely take some time to get used to. I suggest try this kind of control on ps4 or Xone controllers first and see if you can handle it.
RPG Fan - I love racing games, but what I can’t stand is an extremely difficult game and losing every time I am in first place and the CPU decides to ramp it up at the last second or that rubber-band affect where you are in first, then last, then first, only to lose it to the relentless CPU behind you. Is WRC8 like this??
I’m also not normally one for rally games but I admit this intrigues me. The price is probably too much for me to take the plunge though but I’ll keep an eye on it. Ironically the team management and progression aspects attract me just as much as the actual racing. It seems good to have other things to do. Great review guys...but maybe review Garfield Kart Furious Racing for the next one so our wallets can have a break? That one seems like a Glen video for sure.
Haha! Yeah the career mode here is fantastic, much deeper than I expected. The price will likely be much more reasonable physically if you wait a couple weeks.
Man I appreciate the depth of these types of racing sims (also like Asphalt 9) but I sure do enjoy the simplicity & excellence of games like Horizon Chase Turbo. Just pure fun that one is !
Great work as always you guys! If I can only afford one game over the weekend, do I go with this or Horizon Chase Turbo? I loved both reviews and I’m unsure. Thanks!
They are very different games so it depends on what you are looking for or what you like to play more. This is a realistic racing sim whereas HCT is an arcade style game where you pretty much never have to use the breaks. Both are solid games and a ton of fun.
@@jglover8 I know haha, these two are apples and oranges. I love Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Motorsport 5 on my Xbox One but would like a realistic sim on the go (also considering GRID Autosport in this department). HCT looks really good on the Switch and I never got it on any other platform and all the reviews were raving about it.
Been itching to get this game since they said it was coming out on Switch. Have WRC5 on the PS Vita when it came out and was a fun game to play on handheld then.
Not gonna lie, while the graphics are understandably kinda rough, Id actually like to get this one. It at least looks presentable, which is more than I can say for the Switch port of WCR 10, which accomplishes the feat of being a 2022 driving sim with graphics on par with a PS2 launch game.
Mark, not sure if the video is of you or Jace, but someone needs work on the braking skills! I think I will wait for a sale to consider this only because I prefer asphalt or concrete racing. I'll go ahead and give you permission to use my following comment on your next, buy, sale, avoid video. This game is most likely a must buy for racing fans because you are getting one of the most realistic rally racers out there. You may even be getting the most realistic racing games when comparing to the real form currently available on the Switch. But for those that may not gravitate to rally style racing, it's definitely a must buy on sale!
@@jglover8 just tyres wrc8 on the switch it reminds me of isle of man graphics ok for switch game play difficult but good I would recommend getting this game
Grumpy Bollocks You better ask Nintendo to deliver better hardware then. Or unlock the new chip because you will never get such a good looking game on 60fps locked. I don’t see the problem either. I run a steady 120 fps on my pc simrig and 90 in VR and I have absolute no problems with Grid on the Switch. Smooth enough.
@@Grumpy-Bollocks While not a rock solid 60 it's mostly there and even the 30 is smooth and looks hella good. Like insanely impressive for the system, especially in handheld mode or on the Lite. I played Grid for 70 hours on the Lite and it never ceased to take my breath away.
@@jglover8 Sure. I wish we got a Dirt 2 or 3 port. Hell I'll even take Showdown. The lack of detail and shaders make this game look really blend. Also just pure rally for hours can be a drag. Dirt really varies up the racing. Also this game looks this bad and is at 30! Grid at 60 on battery saver looks better than this.
Oooo yes. Been a while since I played a rally game! One question, seems to be an issue with racing games on the switch. Did you notice the “on/off nature”, described by many, regarding the acceleration. Due to the digital triggers or was that not really an issue? Great video as always!
A couple others have asked as well, and I am going to look into whether it has the option of using the right stick for acceleration to give an analog input option as GRID has. I will get back to you!
@@mikenh8851 I did some research and you can change the acceleration to the right stick for an analog option. GameCube controller analog triggers are not currently an option.
The co. driver reminds me of the one from the old Rally Championship games by Magnetic Fields. By the way, can you play this game with a Gamecube controller like with GRiD Autosport? I feel like the driving would be better with analog inputs.
This is a game i would never think to buy, because of difficulty. But your review really makes me want to play it. If you are giving away a copy hook it up.
The way they resolved the popping-up shadows here is way better. Anyway, I don't get it. Why do they have such problems. Those problems didn't exist on the PSP (with 32 MB of RAM), and suddenly exist here, on Switch. Rally games were beautiful on the PSP and I'm pretty sure they could've made them even better on Switch, without all those silly cuts and compromises. BotW doesn't have that problem. Mario Odyssey doesn't have that problem. It's not a matter of hardware, but a matter of proper porting the game. Of proper usage of the hardware. That's it.
How are the codriver? Can you change between male and female, and/or different languages? This is very important to me for immersionn. As a Norwegians, I ould love a Norwegian codriver. Dirt4 let me choose between quite a few codriver, but Dirt 2.9 does not.
I love this game. Bought it. No regrets. I love the feels of the physics on switch - better than grid. It's an acceptable port if you don't mind the graphics that much(since grid is the new benchmark) but it's better than V-rally4 graphics. Grid is performance and graphics quality but WRC 8 is physics (well cuz rally!). I just wished they removed those that makes the performance slower and focused on having a better fps or sharper graphics since it won't matter that much when you're so focused on the road and the pacenotes.
I enjoyed v-rally4 on switch but i wished it had more focus on rally. This seems made for me but in all videos i see everyone always sliding and having the car go out of control. Is the car gameplay that hard to control or do you already have good control on it?
@@rasec46 My personal comment is - V-Rally 4 is actually a bit easier to control than WRC8. Maybe, I just have to find that right settings and a bit of manual tuning on the suspension related setup. Or maybe I just really have to get used to it. I still can't finish a stage without going off the track but I'm getting better. Jumps and bumps here are more tricky and counter steering tends to trigger fishtail on the car which makes you slide and go out of control. It's twitchy.
@@Lo-Fi-_-Gaming thanks for the info. Yup, that twitchy feeling of the controls that i get from the videos are my main concern for now in getting the game. Still in the fence on getting the game but i have too much fun with rally games so i know i'll probably get it.
Hmm, I expected this game to look a bit better. Doesnt even seem close to Grid. Besides that still really want to pick it up as I'm a big sim race fan haha. Cheers for the review lads!
GRID set a crazy high standard, it's true. But I think this game is more than serviceable. Of course, if you have the option to buy on another console, that's going to be the way to go.
@@jglover8 if anywhere I'll buy it on switch ;) im not that much of a stickler on graphics, but I was still amazed. The game looks like a lot of fun however!
I know it‘s splitting hairs but to me there is one major bug when it comes to sound in this game. In a rallye car with a sequential gear box final stages of that box produces a continiously increasing frequency directly linked to the speed of the car/wheel. This was reflected even in „Collin McRae dirt“ at the time of my former PS3. In this game after each gear shift the frequency (sound) of the gear box jumps down in conjunction with the engine. This definately is a bug and makes the whole thing unauthentic to me and leads to the question whether the programming people have ever listened to just one original on board video of a wrc. BTW, the sound of the differential or main shaft of the gear box is a reasonable indicator of absolut wheel/car speed.
Also if you turn vehicle damage all the way up you learn to DRIVE SLOWLY. If you do that you will get better fast, if you try to be a badass and take every turn at 60 you will die.
NB: the engine looks to be the same one used in Vrally 4. I'd say the perfmance is the key area I'm scoring here which is decent. I could have been harsher, it doesn't change how great this game is. Much better than Vrally 4 on Switch.

Basically: really challenging really fun. I will not buy this game after trying if it from game fly.

Any comparison y'all have to Grid on the switch? More concerned with game play as it looks like sim depth is given to WRC and visuals to Grid.
Yes, I agree with this entirely.
Thanks for watching! Grid does look better, but the performance for WRC8 is solid.
Nice stuff Mark and Jace! Used to Sesh one of these on the PS2 back in the day. Pleasantly surprised- onto the wish list!
Thanks!
Grid makes this game look like Racing with Ryan
This game looks so much better than any WRC released so far. I'm gonna get it as soon as it goes on sale!
Love to hear it!
The controller I had a problem on v rally is it the same??
Had to get a dongle to use a ps4 controller????
Good review as always 👍
Cheers mate! Mark
Thanks!
Thanks for the review!
Is there support for GameCube analogue triggers. I prefer not to use digital trigger in simulation racing games, were precision is key.
I'm not sure on the GameCube controller but can look into it. You are able to switch the acceleration to the right stick though for an analog option.
@@ppfclark yeah it's an issue for sure and one Nintendo really needs to fix.

I'm not a huge sim racing either but this looks really interesting. Also I'm pretty impressed by the visuals(the lighting in the night races especially).
Yeah I also thought the night races looked particularly good and better than the daytime races. This one caught me by surprise for sure.
30fps pretty consistently. Mark
I think best 30fps racer I've played was driveclub. Loved that game. Anyway, Cheers for reply.
Thx for the review , it was very helpful . Checking it now on sale .
I love a good racing sim, but didnt have a clue that this was coming to switch. This looks like a solid pickup for the switch! Its pretty damn impressive, considering some of the other racing games on the switch at the moment.
Grid is also very impressive I have to say. And on the other side of the spectrum we have Crash team racing. This is a nice extra though.
I agree, it's a solid port!
Nice, first rally car game I've seen on the Switch, need one to travel to work rn! Cheers for this Jace and Mark. Would you consider this as good as Dirt 4?
Unfortunately never played the Dirt series, but maybe Mark will have?
Check out Grid Autosport, too 👌 Not a pure rally game but its really good
You know what would be awesome as if somebody made a rally game with a companion app where you can hand a family member or friend or girlfriend your iPad or tablet and they could use that as a map while you navigate the race
Hahaha great idea but you've never seen my Mrs with a map!!! #crashtime . Mark
That would be a very interesting way to play! Although, like Mark said my wife would probably send me off every cliff possible!
There was a weird mode in Dirt Rally for PSVR where you could have a friend do a minigame of sorts that would make calls come to you...or prevent you from getting the calls! I'd love to see that more, but it takes a lot of work to properly read out pace notes.
What about the online? Does it have online, leaderboard or live ghosts???????
Great job Jace and Mark!

Another person asked this so I will do some research. You can for sure change acceleration to the right stick for an analog option.
Saludos
Jace is the man he'll get you the answers you need bro! We'll add that to the top comment as well. Mark
I will try the right stick option to see if that works and will get back to you!

Jace Glover Excellent news. Thank you for your effort. It is truly appreciated.
unplayable due to error at the end of races thaat closes the game
Nice review! Gameplay looks great. Hoping the button config is as customizable as Grid, where I've found using the right analog is best for gas, while I leave braking and handbraking to ZL and L (shifting with ZR and R). This allows for analog gas while you brake at the same time (ABS on for digital brake input)
I will look into this and get back to you!
I did some research and you can change the acceleration to the right stick for an analog option. GameCube controller analog triggers are not currently an option.
@@jglover8, thank you sir! Looking forward to playing this one :)
HCT is a fantastic game, my favorite arcade racer on the system for sure! WRC career mode is quite impressive though.
So i must buy one Rally games on Switch, i buy V-Rally 4 or WRC 8 ?
WRC 8 every day. Mark
Yeah V-Rally is no competition here.
WRC 8 for sure!

I like the career progression and the "skill tree". Looks like a very good game from what you've shown.
The career mode is great and a lot deeper than I ever expected!
Not gonna lie, while the graphics are understandably kinda rough, Id actually like to get this one. It at least looks presentable, which is more than I can say for the Switch port of WCR 10, which accomplishes the feat of being a 2022 driving sim with graphics on par with a PS2 launch game.
Can we change the co drivers voice?
There is a wrc esport scene?
Yep!
That's our friend Jace who did a cracking job to be fair haha. Mark
Is there 60fps option ?
No, that is not currently an option.
I have pre ordered this over a month ago really looking forward to this looks a good game
Awesome! Let us know how you like it.
@@jglover8 just tyres wrc8 on the switch it reminds me of isle of man graphics ok for switch game play difficult but good I would recommend getting this game
I think Grid Autosport spoiled us and set the racing sim bar high.
High(ish) they need to fix performance mode in handheld, I want a rock steady 60fps in a driving game. It's far from that.
Yeah that's a solid title, but for rally racing I think this one is solid as well.
Really good review. Thanks for this guys, subscribed b/c of this review and the Grid Autosport one
Oooo yes. Been a while since I played a rally game!
One question, seems to be an issue with racing games on the switch. Did you notice the “on/off nature”, described by many, regarding the acceleration. Due to the digital triggers or was that not really an issue?
Great video as always!
Because it's simulating a geared car there a slight delay when accelerating etc. That somewhat mitigates the issue. Mark
SwitchUp nice one, thanks Mark
A couple others have asked as well, and I am going to look into whether it has the option of using the right stick for acceleration to give an analog input option as GRID has. I will get back to you!
Jace Glover nice one
@@mikenh8851 I did some research and you can change the acceleration to the right stick for an analog option. GameCube controller analog triggers are not currently an option.
The co. driver reminds me of the one from the old Rally Championship games by Magnetic Fields.
By the way, can you play this game with a Gamecube controller like with GRiD Autosport? I feel like the driving would be better with analog inputs.
Bigben Interactive released WRC on Nintendo 3DS back in 2015. ;-)
How is the performance? I tried Wrc 5-6 and the frame rate was horrible and it was on PS4.
This is a game i would never think to buy, because of difficulty. But your review really makes me want to play it. If you are giving away a copy hook it up.
I would never normally buy this either, but now I find myself addicted!
I hope you can do a review of the Hori Racing Wheel for Switch with this game after that comes out!
That would be cool and I would be interested in how well that works myself!
There are multiple options for the co-driver, but I don't remember the specifics. I can get back to you later tonight!

Also steering wheel works good for WRC 8 ,but Vrally 4 only use digital setting for pedals and steering seems very twitchy
I heard a lot of bugs & the issue graph about this game, is it true? Makes me hesitate to select it in sales now
