The new actor for Rassilon was so much less evil and powerful looking than the last one. He punched some guy. Just imagine knowing the location of your grave... knowing where you will be buried... and then someone you love inadvertently tells you that your next stop is that place. You really can see the "I'm not ready yet" when he says trenzalore
This gets even sadder when you realize that not only is just the Doctor crying because he knows he's going to where he's inevitably going to die, but the tears may also be that of Matt himself, realizing that his career as the Doctor is coming to and end.
Matt was brilliant in this scene, he absolutely knocked it out of the ballpark, managing to truly show the Doctor's vast years and age on such a young face.
Imagine the Doctor’s position in this video, living with the guilt of Gallifrey... being the last of the TimeLords. The legacy of the great TimeLords and the guilt of failing to save them at all... All coming to an end as the Doctor has to face his grave at Trenzalore. The greatness of the timelords snuffed out by his failure. I think thats why he is crying, not because he is going to end but in a way, the last flame of Gallifrey is as well. So he runs to his love, the TARDIS, the last surviving child of Gallifrey.
@@andrewjones4332 “All coming to an end as the Doctor has to face his grave at Trenzalore” That’s what this line meant, he wasn’t getting any saves at this time.
It's these moments that make the show. The Doctor is just such a strong and stoic character that to see the rare moments when he breaks down and is totally vulnerable is heartwrenching. The first time we see him properly break down (at the end of Series 3) I found it unnerving, yet fascinating and it's nice that they've kept up those moments occasionally since then.
Me too. For me, there's something so comforting in it. They are such a big part of each other's lives, it's nice to lean on something familiar when the unknown lies ahead.
Legit any time people question his casting as Daemon Targaryen i am just like...go watch doctor who and the crown. Matt is one of the most brilliant actors of this generation
I never watched old Who, but my favorites go 11,12,10,9. Not counting War. I feel somewhat bad for Eccleston, but he really didn't do much to make himself stand out. Smith and Capaldi are both friggin' amazing. Tenant is really good but I think it went for melodrama and he overacted sometimes.
Same here, though I think I might put 9 above 10(though i go back and forth) 10 had amazing moments and I still count the waters of mars as some of the best tv I've ever seen, however his doctor was too melodramatic and the writing contradicted itself a lot, ("the man who never would" my ass!)
Noah Gottlieb I originally loved 10 more than 11. But over the years 11 has developed so much as a character - you can see how he went from the still relatively young time lord who was always joking... To the time lord who was often very serious, we learnt lots about the Doctor from 11 and for the first time ever you can see how he is affected by his age, how he loves for a thosounds years solely as 11 and how those years and experiences affect him.
Well said. There's subtlety to it that 10 didn't capture. I'm actually not sure that I will ever see acting as good as Matt Smith as 11 again. In fairness I don't watch TV or movies much at all, but he is still incredible.
Idk why but Moffatts writing has dropped a lot recently, this was his golden age Matt smith pulled it off PERFECTLY. Capaldi is really good as well but I don't think he works well with Moffat, the chemistry just isn't there
i don't think it had anything to do with subtlety but just the scenes they are acting out, in David's scene he just watched who he believed to be the last of his race die. and for Matt's scene here he knows where he died and has to visit his own grave. I believe both actor did their own scenes perfectly.
I defineitly think smith is the superior actor in general(hell he's one of my favorite actors in general). Tennant was an amazing doctor though, he was just given a lot of melodrama by davies writing sometimes, you want to see Tennant at his best watch waters of mars and Midnight, the latter has a scene which shows just how scared 10 can be despite being possibly the most self rightous and cocky doctor.
+Mayo Tango131 Subtlety absolutely was a forte of Tennant. Did you watch his eyes in 'The Waters of Mars'? They go from bright and hopeful to cold and dark, his lips go from smirky and proud to condescending and aggravated all within one little bit in the Timelord Victorious scene. Even in Midnight, when he asks "What was her name?" and the guy goes "I don't know." you can just see the grief in Tennant without him having to say anything. I think you need to rewatch his series.
I’ve seen people shit on Matt Smith because he’s not as sexy as other celebrities, but holy shit is it undeserved Growing up and watching his episodes as a preteen I never realized how immaculate his acting and performances was He’ll always be remembered as the Doctor but it pisses me off that people don’t acknowledge his talent I’m still livid Disney for snubbing his role in The Rise of Skywalker, bad movie or not, Matt would’ve been engraved into everyone’s minds after watching his performance
Can't believe it's been over 10 years since this episode and this scene still makes me shiver and weep like the first time I saw it during that May night it premiered
This is very random, but: "The Doctor has a secret he will take to the grave. It is discovered." "It" refers to the Doctor's grave here, but it also could've meant his secret. This is very clever, but now imagine translating this line into a language where "secret" and "grave" have a different gender. Like French. "le secret", "la tombe". I don't know how they did it, there doesn't seem to be a clip on UA-cam, but the point is, it must've been difficult. There's a good chance that it got ugly or taken out of context, too. Which makes me very happy to know enough English to understand movies and shows in the original audio.
I wasn't so keen on Matt Smith when he become the Doctor. I think it's like that for a while at first. When dr who rebooted I didn't think anyone would be able to be as good as Christopher then David. I think it's because we become so attached to them and anyone new takes time. One of the best things about Matt was his facial expressions and the ability to convey emotions. Man do I miss these moments.

This gets even sadder when you realize that not only is just the Doctor crying because he knows he's going to where he's inevitably going to die, but the tears may also be that of Matt himself, realizing that his career as the Doctor is coming to and end.
Matt would be a great Joker
lydiawho Woah thats true!
haalys yup but no one is better than that one guy
Yes sir

Matt was brilliant in this scene, he absolutely knocked it out of the ballpark, managing to truly show the Doctor's vast years and age on such a young face.
This episode really brought out the old man in the Eleventh Doctor. Matt Smith is a fantastic actor.
Oh please Doctor don't cry! :,(
he played this so well
Absolutely loved this series. I miss Matt.
OMG! That's so sad! When the TARDIS spins out of earth, it's the animation from the end of time, but backwards........I'm crying.
Is it just me, or are the biggest moments of the Doctor Who story line largely with the Eleventh Doctor?
yes he had the best stories
Imagine the Doctor’s position in this video, living with the guilt of Gallifrey... being the last of the TimeLords.
The legacy of the great TimeLords and the guilt of failing to save them at all... All coming to an end as the Doctor has to face his grave at Trenzalore.
The greatness of the timelords snuffed out by his failure. I think thats why he is crying, not because he is going to end but in a way, the last flame of Gallifrey is as well.
So he runs to his love, the TARDIS, the last surviving child of Gallifrey.
Dont forget he is also the last in his regeneration cycle. So no more saves.....( OO ).... the rules of regeneration are known.
@@andrewjones4332 “All coming to an end as the Doctor has to face his grave at Trenzalore”
That’s what this line meant, he wasn’t getting any saves at this time.
Murray's Score is especially amazing here
This is probably my favorite scene of Matt Smith's era. He's plays this whole scene beautifully. One of the best Doctor's, hand's down.
Rule 1: I lied.
+Nicholas Brennen
Then he tells the truth because a lie that this rule must be true. And being honest, Clara was a liar.
i love how there WERE rules about not entering your own timeline doesnt seem to be the case anymore
the very 1st 2nd and 3rd doctor all meet up to save the 4th 50 years ago
bubdubs He means like, the Doctor literally steps into his own time line and Moffat just forgot about it in the next episode I think.
Matt Snobl he did it with Rose.
Nobody left to enforce them, and since he's dead where they're going - there's no chance of him causing a paradox.
I love how he struggled with the controls and how the TARDIS tried to stop him
"Never judged me never questioned me..just kind" - The Doctor.
My heart broke when he started to cry
Miss Matt so much :( and David for that matter :(
0:25 to 0:45 absolutely tears out my hearts, no Doctor Who fan could not cry along with him.
i like to come back here from time to time, powerful scene.
I always loved the line at 2:13 ! Just his face and the way he says it.
Matt Smith is such a brilliant actor
Everyone has their favorite lines. I always liked him saying River would know idk why.
Me too. For me, there's something so comforting in it. They are such a big part of each other's lives, it's nice to lean on something familiar when the unknown lies ahead.
She might be sassy and get angry with the Doctor but trying to fight back to stop his very likely death, the TARDIS is a real one.
Matt Smith is my favourite actor of all time ❤️
This video just rips at my heartstrings. Matt has been and will always be my favorite Doctor.
Legit any time people question his casting as Daemon Targaryen i am just like...go watch doctor who and the crown. Matt is one of the most brilliant actors of this generation
Daemon Targaryen? I thought he played Prince Philip in The Crown...
"They were just... Kind"
Ouch. The feels after 12's death...
He was crying because of River the Doctor has never been afraid of Dying!!
Well tbh he was crying before she said his grave had been discovered soo who knows
There’s something about Matt smiths lines in this series that gave the doctor depth we hadn’t seen since Christopher Eccleston.
this docter is kind of scary but awesome
The music at the start really helps make this scene. Doctor Who has so many awesome tracks.
I miss Clara & Eleven :(
11 will always be my favorite ❤️
Matt Smith is an amazing actor!.
I don't understand why don't you like Moffat's writing. Yes, because of him so many died but I think his writing is still amazing.
What did you say about 10
+AJ The Alpha Pokemon Master 10 was a drama king.
I really like Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor, he plays him great. But Matt Smith's Doctor is my favourite to this date.
Idk why but Moffatts writing has dropped a lot recently, this was his golden age
Matt smith pulled it off PERFECTLY.
Capaldi is really good as well but I don't think he works well with Moffat, the chemistry just isn't there
Everytime I think I have seen everything of New Who I find something I havn't seen yet :O
I like how the TARDIS can make it's own decisions and throws fits to show disapproval, big exploding and sparky fits.
This is more powerful than all the cries of Tennant, because here it feels authentic and not overexploited.
What about the scene where The Master dies in his arms? Or the scene where he yells out in anguish about how cruel the world was being to him?
Bradley Green
There is a similar scene in "Thor 2: Dark World" and was much better. Sorry, but subtlety was not the fort of Tennant.
i don't think it had anything to do with subtlety but just the scenes they are acting out, in David's scene he just watched who he believed to be the last of his race die. and for Matt's scene here he knows where he died and has to visit his own grave.
+Mayo Tango131
Subtlety absolutely was a forte of Tennant.
I’ve seen people shit on Matt Smith because he’s not as sexy as other celebrities, but holy shit is it undeserved
Growing up and watching his episodes as a preteen I never realized how immaculate his acting and performances was
He’ll always be remembered as the Doctor but it pisses me off that people don’t acknowledge his talent
I’m still livid Disney for snubbing his role in The Rise of Skywalker, bad movie or not, Matt would’ve been engraved into everyone’s minds after watching his performance
I miss Matt so much.....
Seeing the doctor cry must be really unusual
My favourite doctor for sure, tenant was great but matt smith is just amazing
the acting omg !!
Yup
I'm sorry Tennant and RTD fans. The eleventh Doctor and Moffat are my favourites
mine too but only coz I fancied Matt Smith 😇
Did you just apologise for having an opinion?
Dinojengi ja Kumi-Kalle_139 I don't want to offend anyone 😬
Ropsana Khanom people who get offended by what other people prefer are bloody idiots
I agree with Dinojengi ja Kumi-Kalle_1391, your opinion is just as mine, even though we disagree about who is better out of Moffat and Davies.
Their own grave is somewhere a time traveller must never go.
Funny that the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond and Rory Williams actually did just that.
Can't believe it's been over 10 years since this episode and this scene still makes me shiver and weep like the first time I saw it during that May night it premiered
I honestly wasn’t convinced by the scene here. Can’t tell if it was Matt’s acting or Moffat’s writing.
This is very random, but:
"The Doctor has a secret he will take to the grave. It is discovered."
"It" refers to the Doctor's grave here, but it also could've meant his secret.
Yeah, Moffat had a real skill with words
I miss 11
I wasn't so keen on Matt Smith when he become the Doctor. I think it's like that for a while at first. When dr who rebooted I didn't think anyone would be able to be as good as Christopher then David. I think it's because we become so attached to them and anyone new takes time. One of the best things about Matt was his facial expressions and the ability to convey emotions. Man do I miss these moments.
so the tardis ignores the coords being entered, but don't even dare to take off
Damn this show used to be so freaking perfect.
Sad to see how far it fell :(
Matt: They were like "don't swing on the bars" and I was like *iwontswingonthebars*👍👍, then (3:35)
Jenna: So naughty.
Matt: hehhehe
MrHaloWho just watched that video before this one😂
The Doctor’s secret is that he thought he killed his entire planet. War Doctor was his secret.
We got scenes like this for Matt and then we got the shit state after the new doctor
I love how the TARDIS is like "Doctor, no! Don't do the thing!"
Sometimes Smith really did sound like he was 900+ years old
Best Moffat and Smith episode loved it ❤️🙌🏽
When the Doctor cries you know shit is real
This is the first full episode of Doctor Who I watched. I was about to go to a party, I turned on TV and... got stuck there.
That must’ve been confusing
oh no the doctor is immortal great plot
