This video shows you how to install Ring Doorbell Wired. Your Ring doorbell gets the power it needs by being wired to a compatible doorbell system or power supply. If your home has a wired doorbell system, it is powered by a doorbell transformer like this.
To work with your new Ring doorbell, your transformer must meet these specs (10-24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 10-40 VA). To check, you'll need to find it and read the rating printed on its side. Doorbell transformers are usually mounted in an out of the way place near the doorbell chime like an attic, closet, or an electrical box. If you're not sure your transformer has the right specs or you simply can't find it, we recommend you install a compatible doorbell transformer or a Ring plug-in adapter. So, let's say your home has a compatible doorbell system, it's time to test it.
If your doorbell chime rings when you press the button, all is well! Make a mental note of where the chime is installed. Before you do anything else, you must turn off power on the breaker box. If you're not sure which breaker to turn off, contact an electrician for help.
Now that the power is off, let's install the included the jumper cable in your doorbell chime. First, remove its cover. Then, loosen the terminal screws marked "Front" and "Trans", taking care to leave the existing doorbell wires in place. Connect the jumper cable to these terminals and tighten the screws, and just pop the cover back on.
Now, let's uninstall your existing doorbell button. Unscrew it from the wall and disconnect the wires. We'll need access to those wires, so make sure they don't fall back into the wall. Get your Ring doorbell and remove the face plate by pulling from the bottom side while you gently push against the glass. Use your Ring doorbell as a template to mark the screw hole locations on your wall. If you're installing on stucco, brick, or concrete, use the one quarter inch (1/4") Mason rebit to drill holes in your wall. Then, insert the included wall anchors. If you're installing on wood or siding, you don't have to drill any holes.
Next, connect the doorbell wires to your Ring doorbell. Loosen both terminal screws on the back. Then, loop a doorbell wire around each one. Tighten the terminal screws to secure. If your doorbell wires are too short to reach, attach the included wire extenders with these wire nuts.
Now, let's screw in your Ring doorbell. For that, get the included long mounting screws from bag A. Feed any excess wiring back into the wall. Then, mount your Ring doorbell using these screws. Now you can restore power at the breaker box. It may take a moment for your Ring doorbell to power on. You'll know it's ready once it lights up. Once power is on, you can re-attach the faceplate. To secure it, get the special security screw form bag B. Never use any other type of screw to secure the faceplate.
Insert the security screw into the bottom of your doorbell and tighten it. Now that everything is installed, open the Ring app and start the setup process. Then, just follow the instrucations in the app.

Okay I have to ask this question one more time. For what purpose do you need a jumper cable in a wired system? From my reading on follow up on some videos you are jumping out the existing wire in order to use their "wireless" chime bell. Now once again I'm not fully sure if this aspect is true or not, but still I don't see no reason why you need a jumper cable the way it is used in the video that seems very dangerous to do.

Instead of calling an electrician; couldn’t you just flip the breaker switches until the doorbell doesn’t chime when rung??
Hi there. Rest assured, you do not need to hire an electrician to install Ring Video Doorbell Wired. If you're able to figure out which breaker is the correct one, then you don't need to contact anyone. However, we do recommend contacting a licensed electrician if you run into any concerns regarding the wiring, or if you are unsure about your electrical components.
Of course. I am an electrician and I can assure you, it’s much more worth your time and money to watch a UA-cam video on how to install a ceiling fan, outlet, or doorbell. But of course as it’s my job I have no problem making money.
Just buy a tracer and hold it against the wires, it will beep until there is no power, so switch the breakers off until it stops beeping and that’s the breaker you need to shut off so you don’t get electrocuted

Sometimes your breaker switches could be faulty and you may not even know, use a dmm to check continuity after flipping switch before touching leads.
Some transformers you might spot on garages if you see one in a garage locate the switch on the breaker box that says garage and switch it off

It looks like adding a jumper wire to your existing transformer would short It out and burn up your transformer?
What if the house was build in the 50’s and does not have a doorbell to begin with? Can you still wire it to electrical wires within the wall?

As with anything electrical, looks like they forgot to add weatherproofing although I don’t own one yet. Recommend caulking or sealing from exterior around the top edge and longer sides to prevent moisture behind casing.
Not all the way around though moisture can still get in. So leave the bottom uncaulked so if moisture does get in it has a place to leak out the bottom.
Is it necessary to cut the power just for those two wires?
Mine didn't come with extension wires.

What is the purpose of connecting the jumper cables behind the chime/ringer box?

My doorbell is charging from the wire but won't ring inside. I tested it again without the ring doorbell and the original works fine. Not sure what to do. May just buy a chime for 40 bucks. It should of just worked.
I’m having exactly the same problem. I’ve connected and reconnected several times. The original chime works fine without the Ring installed but will not chime from the Ring doorbell button. The white ring on the front of the Ring around the button lights up when wired and it is getting 19v at the terminals on the back of the Ring. Other posters commented that the Ring will not work with an existing electronic chime. I ordered a Chime Pro tonight before I learned that it can ring thru my phone or an Alexa device.
My cables are red and black and are not thin like those, they have multiple wires within them... is ring doorbell not compatible?
Where do you install the little black jumper cable in the time if you are installing on a rear or side door? Still front and trans? I am putting a ring on my front and side door wired ring.
Hi Matt, great question. To ensure your Ring Video Doorbell Wired is receiving power, we recommend attaching the jumper cable to the 'rear' and 'trans' terminals inside your home's chime kit. Can you direct wire it to the transformer? I would love to just get rid of the chime box on the wall and just have a small 1 gang access plate/cover.
Most certainly. All the jumper does is eliminate the chime box. If you want to remove the chime and use a wire nut between transformer positive and push button, go for it.
Just note that if you ever go back to a regular doorbell or move out, you can’t have it wired this way, as you will cause a short.

I think I followed all the steps correctly, but it won't power on. I can't find my transformer anywhere, which is unfortunate. Does it matter which terminal is connected to which wire on the Ring itself?

Its low voltage, it wont zap you if you leave the breaker on. Ive done it over 30 times.

This happens on really old doorbell transformers. They’re not able to handle a constant load and short out. I recommend upgrading your doorbell transformer.

Maybe a dumb question but if i dont currently have a doorbell can i just install a transformer and not a chime? Just curious where the actual chime will come from if not the chime box because it seems like the jumper cable is designed to eliminate the chime
You can use your alexa as a chime.
Ring I don’t know what’s going on but I have a 12v 100mah plug adapter and somehow the wires is saying I don’t have enough power

What’s the purpose of the jumper cable for the chime box?
I think it's so the chime will not sound when it is rung, because you'll get a notification on Google home if you have one, and your phone.

The jumper cable seems to have a small in-line resistor in it, so I assumed that it is to make sure that the existing doorbell still chimes. However... I, too, could not find any markings like TRANS or FRONT on our transformer, so I just didn't install it.
I went ahead with doing the rest of the unit and it worked fine -- except that now the existing doorbell didn't work. So I went back to the transformer and put on the jump cable in the way the video shows and it completes the circuit to the bell PERMANENTLY -- as if someone is holding down the button -- so one *ding* then no *dong*. And it was at this time that the Ring unit reset itself and then restarted, and reset and restarted, and reset and restarted ad nausium. The jump cable was draining to much power from the transformer!!!
I disconnected the jump cable, rebooted the unit (the little orange button on the side) and it was fine. But still no *ding-ding*. Turns out your existing doorbell will not work now so make sure you're always able to hear your phone, OR you'll have to buy a Ring wireless bell unit which just plugs into a mains socket in the house.
So, what is the jump cable for? Buggered if I know but DON'T PUT IT ON THE TRANSFORMER.
@@ianwright1791 From my knowledge it basically design to prevent your chime from working "on purpose", or rather to prevent a fire hazard from your existing no longer functioning chime. Lets look at it this way (and this is all IMO) If you don't remove the transformer or cut power to the chime, you have electricity still running to the chime, so I'm guessing this is a way to maybe complete the circuit or something. All I know is this cable is to make you buy a damn wireless chime that they sell.

They should simply be more upfront about this, especially since they show you having to tinker with your existing chime box. This device will not not NOT work with your normal home's chime box. You need to also buy a Ring plug in chime, or only receive doorbell notifications on your phone.
That’s because the new wired version that just came out does not work with existing home chimes. Not sure why this video shows an existing chime with it
You can receive doorbell notifications on any Alexa enabled device. Much better than a loud chime box. Very handy if you have babies or pets
The whole purpose of this model is that they removed the bulky battery, making it so it needs constant power. If you want a chime, buy the $100 model. It’ll work with your chime.

Question about the transformer VA requirements - Here, they say 10-40 VA range; Ring website only specifies 40 VA Max; and I've seen a sticker on the actual doorbell itself says Min 20VA, Max 40VA.
So please tell me which it is for sure?
Hi there, we would be happy to answer this question. If wiring one of our battery-powered doorbells, you will need a transformer that outputs between 8 and 24 VAC (with at least 10VA). If wiring a Ring Video Doorbell Pro, you will need a transformer the outputs between 16 and 24VAC (minimum 10VA, 30VA recommended). 40 VA is the maximum amount that can be used with our doorbells.
I’ve gotten it to work flawlessly on 16v 10va. You’d have zero issues if you purchase any sort of 24v transformer. As when the voltage goes up, current draw goes down, requiring less va. So if you have or purchase a 24v 40va transformer, that would absolutely be way more than sufficient.

Battery units are not connected to a transformer and don't use AC power feeds.
The doorbell draws much less than 30W (30W is way over actual usage), which is about 1.25A at 24V. I have mine on a 24V DC battery on a gate opener.
If you are using AC power, it can be 10 to 24 Volts . Just make sure that the volts X the amp capacity adds up to 30W (Watts is same a VA more or less (alternating current alternates and it gets complicated)).
Bottom line.. they don't take much power and it is very flexible about how much it can take, so you are unlikely to break it.
Do we actually need the jumper cable?
Yes. This device bypasses the existing chime to receive constant power (it doesn’t have a battery like the more expensive models).

OMG, don't do this guys before verifying wiring from your transformer to your doorbell button - in my house what they suggest with the jumper cable would just short and kill my transformer on doorbell button press, with possible fire hazard!!

Looks easy enough but I am still afraid to try.
Just moved into our new house and decided to add a smart lock which is not working.....my hubby is not pleased. So yep.......I'd be damned if I try to install this and it's a flop.
After a few days my Ring went offline, I tried to troubleshoot it but it wouldn’t turn on. Then reinstalled my old doorbell and it’s not working either. Any ideas?

That's a great question, Aaron. As long as your internal chime kit is compatible with the Ring doorbell you have, your existing chime will sound with the Ring Doorbell. Would you mind letting us know which model Ring Doorbell you have?

Does anyone have a good idea of comparison to Kuna? The house I bought has two Kuna lights already installed and I have them all set up. I got this doorbell as a gift and am at a loss on what to do with it. Kuna offers a free app access with all the same features just a limited recording storage. I can't really return the bell and chime due to not having the receipt or a gift receipt, but it seems like a waste to not use them or get a refund on them in some way.
Sucks mine didn't come with the wire extender and I need one. Annoyed

Depends how it’s wired. If it is one screw that says trans and another that says door or something with both wires, you only need one jumper.
If there is a trans screw and then two other screws that are labeled front and back, then you need two jumpers. Both connecting trans to the other screws.

That's a great question, Dave. A Ring Chime will allow you to hear your Ring and Motion Alerts throughout your home. Without a Ring Chime, you will only receive Ring and Motion Alerts from your mobile device. Also, the Ring Doorbell Wired will not activate your internal chime kit; this is where a Ring Chime will come in handy.

@@metaltera86 Nah, that’s just the whole purpose of this model. It’s made to be slimmer (cause no battery) therefore it needs constant power.
You will get motion and ring notifications on you phone and any echo speakers in your home. Really a actual door bell sound isn’t necessary. It’s just a matter of personal preference.
My door bell has dc power, I can pull both wires off and no electricity at all, but my door bell works perfectly fine, beings I'm not getting jolted by anything I am assuming I have dc power that's probably why I can not get any of these ring or arlo Doorbells to work wired in only if I use the battery . So I returned them and put my normal doorbell back on, I'm not going to spend tons of money on replacing batteries all the time
OK by a transformer that drops from 230v to 10v to 25v for example then connect the 230v side with say 1.0mm or 1.5mm t&e lighting cable and connect to either a lighting junction supply or next to the consumer unit and into the 6a lighting breaker then from the 10 25v transformer supply connect standard bell wire connect that to a chime and the from the chime to the ring doorbell
So if I hooked my ring up to the two wires from my existing doorbell and rang it but nothing came out of the chime box on the inside does that mean my the door bell box is incompatible? If that’s the case what do I need to make it compatible
No, this unit of ring doorbell is NOT compatible with existing chimes, you would need to buy the ring add-on plug in chime for that.
Get something else, I had to return my ring door bell because according to their supporting page, it stops working in cold weather if the temperature goes under 32F, or 0"C. We has a few days snow, and my is dead.

Was it one with a battery? Cause that tends to happen. This model you commented on does not have a battery, therefore, this issue is less likely.
@@joeythefoxxo Yes and no. Yes because it has a battery in there. No, because it is hardwired to charge the battery. When it is under 32F, the battery won't hold a charge and the camera will start to lose power, eventually runs out and become dead. Their official support forum recommend to bring it inside, wait till it gets warm before put it back.
Unfortunately my doorbell is off to the side and not front facing from my door.
I have the ring doorbell and know where the transformer is, but I can’t determine which breaker powers the transformer and don’t want to pay $300 for an electrician to come. So, the doorbell sits unused in its box, probably forever.

Just short out the current transformer. You’ll find out quick.
Just kidding. You may want to go breaker by breaker and label as you go! It’s a quick project that will have you set for all future jobs. Shut off each breaker until the doorbell no longer works. You can always get a cheap voltage tester to verify.
Also. It is safe to install the ring doorbell with power still on (since it’s only 16-24V instead of 120V). But make sure you install the doorbell BEFORE using the chime bridge wire.
Just flip the single breaker at top (usually facing the other direction than all other ones) to off. This cuts power to the whole house.
Find a cheaper electrician, shouldn’t cost more than $120
Dude, just turn breaker switches off until the doorbell doesn't work. Then turn it back on when you're done. You don't need an electrician for that.

I can see how this is confusing . If your doorbell works that means it has a working transformer. The transformers job is to stop down and change AC to DC or straight line current yes, the kind it doesn’t usually kill you.

Every freaking video is about screws and screw drivers. Most people know this. Such a waste of time.
Don't buy. There are some serious problems. In order to drill holes longer bits are needed, bits or extenders that are not sold in Home Depot. If you have to reset the doorbell alarm or if you need the QR code you have to unmount then remount, a very big job. After being on the phone with ring support for one hour, I now have to pay at least $130.00 for a professional installation. I wish I have never bought this thing, but I have no turning back because of the holes in my front wall.
How did it end up after being installed? is it working and worth the money you spent on the product? (not in the mounting job)

Great question. The Video Doorbell Wired does not have a built-in battery. Because of this, it cannot send power back to the internal chime and power the Video Doorbell Wired simultaneously. For this reason, Ring Video Doorbell Wired requires you to bypass the existing doorbell chime using the provided Jumper Cable. This means that after installation, your home doorbell system will not sound when the device’s button is pressed. If you wish to hear audio alerts in your home, you can pair your Video Doorbell Wired with a Ring Chime or compatible Alexa device.
@@ring but the doorbell works in alternative current! And that red wire is the phase and the white is the neutral I suppose, so making a jumper are you not generating a short circuit between the phase and the neutral? Thank you
@@shitGreece The doorbell is wired in series with it. So as long as your doorbell is hooked up, bypassing the chime is just acting like a switch.
