  • Good Morning, Reptilians! This week we're talking a little bit about how to lower humidity in reptile tanks. Specifically, this is going to be for arid and desert creatures. I mention bearded dragons and leopard geckos a lot in this video, but these tips can be used in any tank that's having high humidity issues. Hopefully it's helpful! :)

    Great video Elle! So glad you addressed this issue with humidity. It's always a problem especially in humid South Jersey in the warmer months. I bought a mini dehumidifier for Halo's tank and a larger one next to his tank. I also use a 100 wat heat emitter to dry the tank too. It helped some. So important to keep humidity low.

      I woke up today, fed my Leopard Gecko seen that the Reptisoil in the tank was getting dry and misted the tank & now its °80% humidity 😮. I live in Ohio and it's Summer so I took the water bowl out,turned off the light,moved digital thermometer to middle of tank,turned on AC & Fan. Hopefully one of these options will work.

      Higher humidity at night is very common. You should only be concerned if the humidity is in the 50s or 60s even in the day. 50 isnt that bad for the day but it should be lower like 35 through 45.

    😑 I can't seem to bring my Bearded Dragon's enclosure humidity down. I added ventilation, I put a dehumidifier inside which only brought it down by like 3 percent not even sure if it's the light or the DH doing it. I have no water in there and it's still in the 50s percentage. It doesnt help that I live in Florida and I have two turtle tanks in the same room. I dont have a Beardie yet but I'm afraid if I dont get the humidity down then I cant have one.

    Anyone can help? We got a baby beardie a month ago. The humidity is mostly ok in the day (40 to 50), then at night it leaps. I often wake up to it being in the 70's. We removed the water bowl after a few days (so it's been out for weeks now,) no live plants, bought a dehumidifier for the room, and a hanging evadry goes in the tank at night, we have the flat carpet like material for substrate, small rice sock at night, use 100w bulbs and a heat emitter.....what else can we do? He hasnt grown at all, actually looks a little smaller. He isn't skittish, he doesn't run, hide, or wave when we come close. He eats mealworms and crickets, in addition to moistened pellets with vitamin powder mixed in. we're struggling. One thing to note, we just added a UVB bulb today, I didnt understand that the basking light was a different thing. So we have 4 lamps that we rotate (day, night, uvb, and che), the evadry at night, dehumidifer at night.

    What about using a terrarium fan or portable small fan used to cool off equipment? I’m going to try this method because the humidifier you recommend doesn’t have the best reviews is melting things and getting very hot from what people on that particular item are saying. I thought of using a terrarium fan or an aquarium fan to lower my humidity her humidity gets anywhere from 50 to 55 and I don’t like that but if I turn on my air condition it is so cold in my house but it does drop her humidity down to at least 40.

      Make sure to close windows when the humidity outside is above 50. I also heard a dehumidifier can really help. Like the 15 to 20 dollar ones that dont need electricity. They can hang on the inside of the tank and only need to be charged every couple of weeks. It might also help to move the beardie to a room that doesnt get much airflow from the outside or doesnt have many windows so that you can control temps and humidity much easier. If the humidity is only in the 60s at night then its kind of normal even though it should be a bit lower but if the humidity is constantly above 50 or 60 even in the day then maybe try some of my tips. 47 from 75 is actually a big difference. My humidity goes down only to 53% from 75% with the lights on. That means your dehumidifier is lowering it by 6% which isn't much but it's something. The thing that worked for me was a large dehumidifier for the room. Theyre pricey but it was the only thing that worked. Combine that with the small dehumidifier in the cage and maybe you can get it down to 35%. Or you may not need the one in the cage at all.

    If you raise the temperature you will raise the humidity. Mostly from the water from the water bowl evaporating faster.

      @@anestheticskate3114 I live in South Jersey and everyday humidity was horrible. I tried a mini dehumidifier and a fan but it was still so high. So I finally bought a refurbished 45 pint dehumidifier for my living room which is where my beardie's tank is located. I'll tell you I didn't realize how high the humidity in my apartment. I empty it about 3 times a day. It lowered my humidity so much and now no worries about our health including my beardie's tank. Best investment I've made. I looked online and bought a refurbished dehumidifier. So much cheaper and works great😊

    Lately, Ive been beginning to believe that it is completely false that bearded dragons should have low humidity. It honestly doesn’t make any sense when you consider their wild habitat. For example, it is currently at 78% humidity in New South Wales, which is a common humidity level during the rainy season which lasts 3 months or so. Also, the humidity very drastically fluctuates there from high to low in a daily basis.
    I think this is a misconception in the reptile community that needs more conclusive evidence.

    I know 3 breeders that keep their dragons on sand with no problems.

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  4 роки тому +10

      Keeping reptiles has always been trial and error, unfortunately. For years, breeders also kept certain lizard species cohabbed, extensively bred things like leopard geckos with the enigma gene (which cause these poor guys to have seizures their whole lives), and kept ADV+ dragons together. In the world of spiders, keepers thought GBBs were to be kept in high humidity, until they started dying and more research was done that disproved that. Animal care is always changing. 😊
      I always encourage people to do their own research and do what they feel is best for their animals. I cannot ignore, however, all of the cases of impaction, resulting in surgery and death, for these animals. Especially when so many people are new to the hobby and using these videos for research purposes. It'd be irresponsible not to bring it up, especially since I would never put my own animals at such an unnecessary risk.
      At the end of the day, everyone is just trying to do right by their animals, and provide them with a happy and healthy life! 😊

      I would never purchase a beardie who was kept on sand, so those are 3 breeder's that I would avoid.
