NOTE on the Jada Smith error! This script is kinda peculiar in that it's one of two I was working on BEFORE I even started this channel. So it got worked on and shelved repeatedly for over a year with me deciding to finish it randomly a very long time after it had been started. I THINK it was supposed to be a joke about how the character was treating Karl Urban's character (because of the slap) at some point and it got lost in translation when I revisited the script after having not looked at it in a long time and gaslit myself into thinking it ACTUALLY WAS HER. tl;dr I got it wrong somewhere in that process, and that's my bad. That is NOT Jada Smith it's Thandiwe Newton!
Necromongers are a great original idea! you are wrong about chronicles. Judy Dench is not playing a Furion but an elemental. that why she has weighted chains to keep from flying away.
The Chronicles of Riddick is a movie I love despite its flaws. The director’s cut fixed a lot, mostly by removing Riddick’s lines in several interactions.
The Chronicles of Riddick franchise is absolutely underrated. It doesn’t get a lot of recognition for not only giving us an interesting character but an extraordinary universe that the movies, games and other media is set within.
My favorite thing of all of the Riddick content?: Pouring a couple bottles of water on his head to cool him off from basically a nuclear explosion. So badass.
The sign of a truly good youtuber. No its not their t-shirts. Its the ability to make an indepth 30+ video on a topic i was clueless to needing. If you put care into your video and make it a good watch. Ill be here
I've always loved the Riddick series, because it's set in a more distant future than most scifi is. It's heavily implied to be in a MUCH older universe, one far enough forward to make humans from different worlds effectively their own subspecies of human. I often peg Riddick to be in the 100K to 1M years future
I'm glad someone said it. The second he said "Jada Pinkett Smith" I was thinking that I was crazy for not remembering her in the movie. Then I realized based on the context he was talking about Thandie Newton.
@tonypine3434 Correct she credited in Cronicless and MI2 as Thandy Newton but was actually a stagename..for her real name all along was Thandiwe Newton.
Dame Judi Dench plays an Elemental, not a Furyan in the film. Elementals are one of among a few Elder races still in existence in the Riddick universe cannon along side them were Furyans that were killed by the Lord Marshall, all but two, the Purifier and Riddick of course. And my brother in christ... did you just call Thandiwe Newton, Jada Pinkette Smith?! Did you research the actors names before writing the script? O.o
Judy Dench wasn't a furyan. Her character was an elemental. The only other furyans in the movie are the lady in the flashbacks and the convert that let him live and gave him a ship on Crematoria. That wasn't Jaden Pinkett-Smith. It's Thandiwe Newton. She was in Crash.
I love Chronicles! The other two movies were good too, (more so Pitch Black - due to the third one being more of a rehash of Pitch Black), but Chronicles was amazing. It had it's flaws, but noting remotely deserving the level of hate it received. It was one of the most original sci-fi universes in sci-fi film history and had a good story, great characters, with awesome action. Being a hardcore sci-fi fan myself, it really annoys the shit outa me the way the sci-fi fandom constantly bitches about there not being any "original" big-budget sci-fi movies, while then when an original sci-fi movie comes out they nit-pick it to death.
Watch the director’s cut if you haven’t, it’s a superior experience by far. I agree with you on the movie and pretty much everything you said. People say they want originality but when they get it, it’s a hard sell every time.
Glad more people are getting into the Riddick franchise. The original Pitch Black was the first R rated film I saw in theaters with my dad, we highly enjoyed it.
Pitch black will always be one of my favorite movies, and escape from butcher bay one of my favorite games. The last movie was really great too but I felt like they could have gone a just a little bit more original. I agree with you on everything you said about the second movie. It's not objectively good. But it's fun to watch and has some very memorable parts. I love the aesthetics and idea of the necros.
What a great video on what was by far my favorite child hood franchise movies and games included.. it's so rare that I see anyone else talking about this franchise
I've always had a problem with the "Riddick-verse", watching Pitch Black and Chronicles, I couldn't reconcile both existing in the same universe (one film is like a fairly grounded Alien-esque adventure, and the other adds weird magic and a nomadic army of armor wearing, death-loving cultist), until one day, it clicked: "wait... this is Conan the Barbarian in space!". After that, every retcon made sense for me. I know it's weird, but that's how my head works, I guess.
And we still have yet to see the more "advanced" sections of Riddickverse either, only harsh prison colonies, abandoned outposts or a Islamic solar system, and barely an island on Aguerra Prime (the one planet the Dark Athena raided).
I know im late but considering Riddick universe is pretty much personal project of Vin Diesel and in case of movies also David Twohy and no studio is willing to take it up it's no surprising that it passed under the radar for so many people. Projects that those who make them really want to do it and have passion for it are the best even if they pass under the radar. If it wasnt for Vin Diesel and David Twohy we wouldnt have seen any of this and im gratefull for their efforts. It has been a long time since license expired for both Riddick games and as it was said it's not aviable for purchase anywhere. To deal with that issue im glad that game pirates exist. Might be illegal but they litterally saved both games from vanishing. I always keep that one copy of both games around just in case i want to replay it again. Dark Fury is also where we are introduced to Toombs bounty hunter character from the beginning of Chronicles of Riddick. Alexa Davalos did great job as Kyra, shame they killed her character at the end of the movie. Third movie was pretty good and more grounded than Chronicles of Riddick. Anyway cant wait for the Furya movie to get made.
Try striking at the weapon hand like Riddick. You must analyze the character you are playing. I have played and replayed these games for years. They are dear to my heart, so it was awesome to see this video. Thank you very much
ok the awesome part about the chronicles of Riddick book is the appendixes in the back of the book that gives you the FULL history of the necromongers that happen BEFORE the events in the chronicles of riddick. if you love riddick, it's a must read
I watched one of these while I was on work assignment in Pennsylvania. I don’t know why but I felt compelled to finish the series after that. And now here I am watching a retrospective. There is just a certain magic behind passion projects regardless of their perceived jank
Just gonna add in, in case it hasn't been said, that there's also an animated movie set between Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick. Explains how the survivors separated and how Toombs gets involved.
Great video dude. Love the Riddick movies. I really like the over the top grandiosity of the second film. The first more street level half of it is more accurate to the character from the first film and I love that stuff but I'm a sucker for a space opera with some prophecy thrown in too. Warts and all I love it.
I was really glad to hear 'Riddick' was successful given how much of a passion project it was for Vin and the Durector and how much personal money was theown in to complete it
I really enjoyed the games 'meta' play loop. As Riddick, you are expected to escape and you do find who, what and where is needed to accomplish that, but end up deeper or transferred to a higher level of secure accommodations and need to repeat the activity. What is cool is the harder they make it, the less amount of time needed. It doesn't mean it's easier, but it doesn't drag it out while similar games invert that formula making the beginning parts short and easy while making the late game inflated for run time.
I have my bones to pick with many of my favorite film franchises but this series in my eyes is perfection. Again I reiterate in my eyes because I get that people don’t enjoy Chronicles but I love it along with every entry the series has. That includes the games as well! I can never get enough of this character and the world. Waiting for each sequel has been my only gripe since it takes so long! Can’t wait for Furya. Glad more people are discovering this under appreciated franchise.
Great video, im pretty sure Butcher bay used to just have the doctor who does the eye shine when it originally came out, then was changed to Furion stuff when it was remade. This whole franchise has had a weird/rough ride.
Nope it didn't and that's not what happened. It DID have a doctor, down in those tunnels with the cannibal mutant things. However he didn't do the Eye Shine. He only fixed Riddick's arm, and told him as much. Riddick just convinced himself that the doctor was lying to him, and did the eye shine as well. It was basically a lie he told himself to keep from going crazy. What happened is this. Right before Riddick got the eyeshine he started hearing voices, and freaked out. He was convinced that the doctor had done something to him. The doctor told him he didn't. What was actually happening was that he hearing the voices of his Furyan ancestors, as his Furyan blood started to awaken & racial abilities (eyeshine & genetic memory) started to manifest. However he had no idea what was going on. So it freaked him the hell out, and he was afraid he was losing his mind. So he denied that it was real, and convinced himself that the doctor had shined his eyes.
The pitch black movie is excelent and imo holds up better than most films i can think of. Especially scifi films. They minimized how much cgi they showed. And they did it in ways i think were extremely effective. Near the end of the film riddick is cornered by 2 monsters and the scene cuts away from him to the perspective of the "love interest". You hear the fight from her perspective instead of watching a stupid low budget cgi fight scene. Its just riddick grunting and shouting and the monsters shrieking. imo that was so much more powerful than showing the action
I really enjoyed the first game. Still got it on Xbox I'm guessing. It's all in boxes. I don't think I finished it though. Only issue is you can really tell the actors are reading their lines one by one and not reacting to each other.
I was hoping to see someone mention dark fury because it really just adds to the point you’re making on what it connected universe. This is but through multiple different forms of media, both live action, film, and animation. As well as video games
The best way to deal with the shiv combat, On a mouse and keyboard... Same thing with the Fist combat, Hit them into a stagger and then break target lock and get behind them.... Where you can then Grapple.... I don't know how well this would work on a controller, ask the target lock is designed around the controller limitation.... And it doesn't work in the boss fights as you're forced into target lock, But for the main Combat just immediately start trying to break lock and get behind them.
Only thing I don’t like about franchise is lack of info I wish we had a movie explaining riddick universe his origin story, be able to see his character development from kid to who he is,like where is earth I see humans are on many planets and technology is more advanced it feels like some a bit far future idk.For me it’s just lack of info I kinda dislike I wish he had a first movie explaining most of things and other just following Riddick, very good movies tho.
This was great, I am a huge fan of this franchise. I was maybe 13 or 14 I first saw Pitch Black, even at that time I absolutely loved monster movies. I loved the character of Riddick and was super exited when I saw that they were making a sequal to it which I still really enjoy while agreeing that the plot was pretty bad. I am exited to hear that another movie is in production and think that a modern Riddick game would be cool to see as well.
Loved this game back it was released. Crown jewel of game adaptations that no one anticipated but they were good. The other 2 is Transformers Cybertron duo and Arkham games.
Something I think people miss about the second films villains is that they're purposely abstract from the universe they're in, they are such an invading force that they destroy the very tone and atmosphere of the story similar to how the Bio-raptors changed the first films tone to Horror. I love the second film I don't mind that they tried to up the scale of the story I'd rather that then just repeat the same "Riddick gets captured then escapes" schtick and after many viewings I don't think it's a bad film, everything from the cinematography to the set design to the music is great in it. After the third film I'm hopeful the fourth can find the perfect spot between the contrasting styles.
15:18 Oh, boy. If you have a bloom problem with Escape from Butcher Bay/Assault on Dark Athena it's better you stay away from The Darkness and Syndicate (2012), the other two Starbreeze FPS.
Owning a license to play the game on steam and still being able to go back to it when I want, even after it is delist, is great. Played it on OG XBOX before and had to pick it up for pc when the dlc sequel dropped. Jaaaaackkiiiiii *ahem cough uhfhhh* Riiiiidddickkk.
I am sad they never finished it, I really hope the 4th movie is actually real and not cancelled or something. 😞 As a kid I loved these movies. Still waiting. 🙏
@@evprince good enough, though I wouldn't mind a possible remaster for modern hardware. Anyway, the Riddick universe truly is underrated and it deserves more love especially since the video games are probably two of the best examples of games that tie into a movie franchise to exist with the possible exception of the 2009 Avatar game given how it takes place as a side story during the events of the film. Wish that Universal would let Vin do another Riddick movie or game, preferably before he gets too old to act in Hollywood.
A lot of you forget there’s 4 Riddick films, there anime anthology called dark fury which explains the events after pitch black and before chronicles. I def recommend especially if you like graphic stylized gore 💯
The remake has all of the additional combat features of The sequel, it's highly recommended to stick with that, not only because it works on 64 bit compatible Which solves a lot of problems in getting older games To run on modern systems but also it's a lot more flushed out and it has that 8 way lean system That they developed for the sequel And better shooting... The original had a lot of systems that were kind of halfway there, and the sequel fixes that by bringing them into their CompleteIteration... You'll notice a lot of them even carried over into the wolfenstein games.

Thandie Newton is a goddess, idk how you can get that wrong
Necromongers are a great original idea! you are wrong about chronicles. Judy Dench is not playing a Furion but an elemental. that why she has weighted chains to keep from flying away.
The Chronicles of Riddick is a movie I love despite its flaws. The director’s cut fixed a lot, mostly by removing Riddick’s lines in several interactions.
I thought it was the best one and the characters could have been developed a lot more, the other one I have seen lacked much story development
You can literally feel through the screen that Vin Diesel cares about this character. The Riddick universe is like family to him.
🧑🦲FAMILY! 👨🦲FAMILY! 🧑🦲FAMILY! 👨🦲FAMILY! 🧑🦲 FAMILY!
An hour-long video about the Riddick franchise?
Today is truly a day of days.
Castlevania outside of the odd seductress parts I found were great. But love the vid!
Judy Dench was an Elemental not a furion. Other than that great video!
Damn you right
And that's Thandie Newton, not Jada Pinkett Smith
That is not Jada Pinkett Smith.
That is Thandiwe Newton, an incredible actress.
Those false, mistaken statements somehow compromise this whole video.
If you have zero critical thinking skills, maybe
30:04 - It's not Jada Pinkett Smith in the movie, it's Thandie Newton.
Yeah.. that part of the script was outright incorrect
she was channeling Jada vibes the whole time. lol
@@evprinceYou're not wrong about Jada Pinkett either. Feels like I'm watching Will Smith (Vaako) getting pressed by her

I am a HUGE fan of Chronicles. No matter what anyone says, they swung for the fences and the movie is fun to watch.
Plus, I really like that Pitch Black and Chronicles are different genres

Fun Fact: Pitch Black was originally written to be in the Aliens franchise.
*Alien
As a kid I thought it was lol
That makes so much sense.
I remember reading something about that forever ago
Bro a universe where Riddick is fighting against Aliens and Predators is something I didn’t know I needed
Before you said the bloom in Butcher Bay was only a problem in a remake I was thinking it was a good way to show Riddick's sensitive eyes
30:05 The actress is Thandy Newton not Jada Pinkett Smith
I'm glad someone said it. The second he said "Jada Pinkett Smith" I was thinking that I was crazy for not remembering her in the movie. Then I realized based on the context he was talking about Thandie Newton.
I was like no! Mission Impossible!
I thought he was trolling at first
Thandiwe* if you're gonna correct the record. Shout out to her.

This series is gold. It's fun, simple, full of over the top characters, and lots of melodrama. Perfection.
I love Chronicles of Riddick. Does it make sense? Not really but I don’t care, that movie is entertaining as hell
The Matrix is another series (from same time period) with canon spanning across live-action movies, video games and animation.
You just earned a fat sub from me for covering one of my favorite franchises.

There was an exploit in Escape from butcher bay. If you alternate attack and block quickly shiv fights became a chore rather than a challenge
Vin diesel is great at voice acting video games because he's started out his career voicing the iron giant. Vin Deesee is GOATED.
Being a Riddick fan is pure suffering. But you have to love it, since everyone involved does.
Umm at the time of your upload, this game WAS available to purchase online through the xbox 360 store

I play through escape from butcher Bay two or three years ago and it's still holds up incredibly well.
I kinda like that the series goes a little all over the place as far as genres go to be fair.

That explains why their aesthetics were quite similar, despite different settings.
God that was such a strong opener
I am sad they never finished it, I really hope the 4th movie is actually real and not cancelled or something. 😞 As a kid I loved these movies.
Still waiting. 🙏
I did not know there were so many games of Riddick out there. I don't even find one in the store of the xbox series s.
Still wish that we could get a rerelease of the PC version for Butcher Bay and Dark Athena on Steam and/or GOG...
They released them both for free as abandonware
@@evprince good enough, though I wouldn't mind a possible remaster for modern hardware.
Anyway, the Riddick universe truly is underrated and it deserves more love especially since the video games are probably two of the best examples of games that tie into a movie franchise to exist with the possible exception of the 2009 Avatar game given how it takes place as a side story during the events of the film.
Wish that Universal would let Vin do another Riddick movie or game, preferably before he gets too old to act in Hollywood.
If you're not high as fuck at 4 in the morning and watching the chronicles of riddick what are you even doing with your life?
Jada Pickett Smith..... wasn't in the movie though. Did you mean Thandi Newton?
Bro what was that song at the end of the video?
Dark Fury is fantastic, wish they would release some more of those stylized mini movies.
What was the song at the end of this video
A lot of you forget there’s 4 Riddick films, there anime anthology called dark fury which explains the events after pitch black and before chronicles. I def recommend especially if you like graphic stylized gore 💯
This video gives you my subscription.
A new game, Arkham Shadow, seems to take a little inspiration from Butcher Bay, but it's a VR game.
The only thing that saves chronicles of riddick 2 is the esthetics of the necromonger.
You correctly said "champing at the bit" instead of "chomping!"
Rare...😆
Have not played the RIDDICK games, yet. I will come back when i finally get those under my belt. Or, maybe just a few apoilers wouldnt hurt
Riddick getting with the lesbian merc at the end of the third movie was just pure Vin Diesel ego stroking, and I love it. 😂🤣
gave a like just because you said "champing" at the bit. lol
Escape from Butcher Bay was free with the Nvidia graphics cards back in the day.
great video ty
i just want remasters of the old riddick games hopefully someone pitches that to vin
Four movies.. pitch black animated movie, chronicles and Riddick
I played all the games when I was a kid if I would’ve known it would be that hard to find I would’ve kept it
There's still the PC version. Downloaded it after my Xbox died. Shame about the rest of console-exclusive titles though.
Vin diesel the riddick greatest fan and im hoping it doesnt stop lol
