The Necromongers worship death. The process to become a necromonger, where you get the two spike's driven into your neck, kills off a lot of the normal biological processes resulting in the person having reduced emotions and sterility. Its why the necromongers refer to anyone outside of their order as breeders. Threeface took this process even further by taking a pilgrimage to the necromonger underworld, their version of mecca/land of the dead, and became something known as a holy half dead. Its why he has all the freaky soul powers. By saying that they should promote him to full dead Dame Vaako is actually saying that they should assassinate him and take his place because, according to necromonger law, you keep what you kill.
Important to note that Dame Vaako is not burning her eyes. She is lining her eyes with coal, an actual cosmetic practice that dates all the way back to ancient egypt and is something she actually did in the movie. They just added the smoke for a bit of theatrical flare.
I will add that the Director's Cut of Chronicles of Riddick adds so much more to the "lore" of Furia which the normal movie just doesn't bother with. Especially the fight on the burning planet. some modern humans still have a slight bit of the reflective sheen in some lighting but not to the degree that say a cat, or a dog has. Oddly enough this genetic trait is often found in people who have the trait that makes their muscle and bone density denser than normal. They also tend to have an extra bone in their ankles.
Is this why my night vision is drastically superior to everyone I know, but I require sunglasses anytime the sun is out, or my eyes water and I must squint or I can't see shit? Lol
@@Picodaguyoh I agree but not completely. Our seemingly weird adaptations are not strange at all when viewed individually. When viewed together it's very strange. Basically everything came together in just the right way to make humans. It's likely that each of these adaptations led to these other adaptations or at the least enhanced them.
The chronicles of Riddick has always been one of my favourite movies of all time, yes it may be cheesy, but it's great, thanks for covering this series, Roanoke!
Her name is Kiera. Remember, in Pitch Black, she was traveling as "Jack" while pretending to be a boy, because it was unsafe for her to travel as a lone girl. It's funny that you had a Mass Effect reference earlier on, as the game team were big fans of the series. Jack from Mass Effect is based on this Jack. Also, you could have a situation where there is an extreme disparity in temperatures, but only if there is some sort of intense atmospheric lensing, coupled with an environment that doesn't retain heat well. Basically, the light is magnified by the atmosphere in direct sunlight, but the heat dissipates once the sunlight is off it. It wouldn't be even vaguely breathable though.
I think the implication was they only dusted the planets they couldn't conquer. But also the converts would all be brought off planet so...*shrug* I don't think Riddick knew he was a Furyan. It sounded to be like he was orphaned and put on another planet. And also, the reason they freaked out about Riddick being a Furyan was because there was a sort of prophecy that the lead guy's empire would be brought down by a Furyan. At least that was my understanding.
Commander Shepard is on vacation at the moment. They will be back in five to six days. Thank you for contacting Alliance Communications. Have a nice day.
0:50 take The Expanse for example, the Beltalowda (belters) are usually taller and have weaker bones. Martians have slightly weaker bones and are not usually taller than Earthlings. But they do not feel too well in Earth gravity. Same with the Beltalowda, where Mistress Avasarala even used gravity as torture method towards the Beltalowda.
That is fiction and is not even theoretical. Its a made up anatomical adaptation in a science fiction novel. Any basis in real theoretical biology is very loose at best.
I believe New Mecca was supposed to be a promised sanctuary for all the faiths of the Verse, so I assume no one attempts to invade a religious capital all that often, and they just have a defense force to deal with pirates and police work. I agree a that a couple of MACs would do this world some good. Such a great series! Maybe will get another movie after Vin is like 90 😅
15:30 i liked the "matter" and "energy" part. Some RTS games, like Total Annihilation and Supreme commander actually use only those 2 resources to basically 3D print everything.
In the game he doesn't get his eyes from a doctor. He gets his arm stitched up by a doctor and then time freezes and a disembodied voice tells him that it will give him a gift and then POW! he's got sun sensitivity. No menthols necessary.
Riddick was never supposed to be the main character or the start of a saga, it was just a one and done movie. Vin Diesel killed the role so much that they decided to make it a saga and add lore all around it, hence why in the first movie they mention it's an expensive eye surgery and starting Chronicles of Riddick he's a Furyan. The girl even makes a comment in Chronicles of Riddick about how she looked everywhere and nobody was doing eye surgeries like that.
@@diomedes7971 Nah that's "The Last Witchhunter" another movie he made. The Riddick series is just one that he fucking loves doing so he got the rights to produce them exclusively so he can keep doing the role
I think the reason is the same as in the Lancer universe. So much time has past that human cutlures have divided across the galaxy- now these colonies have had such little contact between each other that there isnt a unifying human force to protect individual planets. So many worlds cant afford or dont have the technology themselves to produce oribital arrays.
Riddick's connection with Pack based Predators also could be an evolutionary trait, its shown much better in the Third movie but he seems to understand animals on instinctual levels
There's a delicious irony in refering to the Necros as "Space Romans" - Colm Feore who played the Lord Marshall also played Julius Caesar in 2005's tv mini-series Empire.
23:35 I have this, you really don’t notice until you swim, but you definitely notice while swimming. Even with lungs full of air I still slowly sink. No life guard job for me
Dense bone squad, on one hand I nearly drowned taking a mandatory lifeguard test at a summer camp i worked at, on the other hand I cant count the number of concussions and broken bones I should have gotten if my bones didn't decide "nah".
"Listen brother I raise you pedantic and shallow" made me laugh so hard I had to leave my first comment on your videos, your videos always make me watch movies I wouldn't have given a shot thanks for the amazing and entertaining videos Roanoke
I was hoping you would cover this. The PBU(Pitch Black Universe as I like to call it) is one of my favorites and hope to see more from it eventually. But I’m curious if you could try the mud creatures from Riddick. They remind me of leeches somehow mixed with a scorpion. Odd, but alien as it should.
Having played through the game many times. Love it. His eyes are "given" or "awakened" by an ancestor that he sees in some kind of hallucination during the game telling him about his past.
When Pitch Black was filmed, there were no major plans involving the character of Riddick. In fact, Pitch Black was never intended to launch a franchise. The film exists as a completely isolated episode in the Riddick saga and is more of a spin-off than a prequel or part of the “Chronicles of Riddick” cinematic universe. Thus, the genesis of Riddick's eyes is different in Pitch Black, in which he is a human, than in the rest of The Chronicles of Riddick, in which he is a Furian.
@@Blasted2Oblivion he could be straight up lying about the surgery though. Nobody knows if he had the eye shine before he was in that prison. In Pitch Black, nobody recognized his eyes as a way to see in the dark. They only found out after Riddick told Jack how he got them
The creators of pitch black wanted to create a large series with Riddick at the center. They had ideas on what they wanted but they were just ideas and notes. They expanded on the lore with the books and video games
@Blasted2Oblivion that could simply br film continuity. Even if they didnt have solid plans they took the same "lie" that was told to help stitch things together.
Furyans are also likely better strategists than most humans, with strategic thinking being one of the main ways humans survive difficult, violent lives. So while they may not be the best engineering students, they can outmatch anyone in hand to hand combat. Furyan Football Strategy must be HELLA advanced, and they would DOMINATE in starcraft lobbies.
25:45 The reason they let the beasts eat people is because if they reduce the number of prisoners they can fit more in the same size hole. They were not recording the prisoners when they get eaten. This is further confirmed before the teacup scene "They aren't dead if they're still on the books".
The memes of military spouses are real. I was flying out of fort Leonard wood (army base) and the front desk ladies were getting into a pissing contest over there spouses ranks and me and some soldier just looked at each other like wtf is going on right now 😂
I’m sorry you were at Ft. LostInTheWoods. Happy you flew out of there. But yeah, I don’t think the Marine detachment had much of anything to do with the civilians, though I was there over 20 years ago. I can absolutely believe the wives got into piddly contests regarding their husband’s rank and how it reflected their standing. It’s not there was much for them to do around there
Really glad you mentioned the games. Its been so many years I personally only remembered that the games mentioned something about the shine job and that was it. Love the videos! Keep it up the awesome work!
I've always liked this series for the art direction and creature designs (not continuity). The wardens were so cool! Thank you for covering this Roanoke 🙏🏻 PS if you are open to recommendations, Super Hybrid is a fun movie.
These movies are the only instance in which i can completely shut down the torettoness and believe Diesel can actually perform as a different character.
Ever seen The Pacifier? It’s a little hard to watch at first since we’re so used to seeing the menacing badass characters he usually plays, but when you take him playing D&D into account, it’s an interesting watch. Not exactly good, but fun to watch Diesel as an actor stepping outside his comfort zone
How DARE you not know the lore behind a movie series you only just started? How dare Roanoke! Joking. Great vid! Even as someone that knows the lore a bit to this series I still really enjoy your vids.
Aren't blue eyes thought to only be about 20k years old? And they're recessive, so they had to be a great adaptation (at least for getting people who had them laid).
There seems to be no real benefit to them and being recessive unlikely to be passed on... so very likely it's just an attraction thing like you said. I imagine if you're only used to a certain colour of eyes then something different is going to attract your attention.
@retsaMinnavoiG People still have a thing for unusual coloration, while blue eyes are "normal" in Europe and North America they're still pretty rare other places and redheads in general are still pretty rare and tend to have a lot of attention on them that way.
Actually, in butcher bay, pope joe stiches Riddicks arm up and riddick goes blind. Riddick gets all mad and joe is like "i have no idea what youre talking about, i just stiched your arm". The problem being, there are 2 different versions of the game
Butcher Bay was such a fun game honestly I need to play through it again honestly I still remember the section's with the Dwellers and the Creatures terrified me when I was younger
0:31 another one is here in Africa, where 2 the survivability of 2 diseases is greatly increased because a population has both of them The diseases being sickle cell aenimia & malaria (if you're a geneticist here in Africa, we love teachingour students about it) So,in populations where sickle cell aenimia is prevalent, the Malerial infection rate is increadibley low (even if these populations are in the middle of malarial hot spot) Its because the Plasmodium parasite cannot infect the red blood cell, due to the sickle shape BUT on the other side of the coin, the large populations of individuals with sickle cell are those whose genotype is heterogeneous for sickle cell (in other words, those that only have one copy for sickle cell, rather than 2 copies), so this why they don't have AS MANY sickle shaped red blood cells, nor as many issues that accompany the disease Basically, their survivability of each diseaseis incresed because they have both diseases inhabiting their bodies
Roanoke about the planet not having a large defense force. That could easily be attributed to the population not politicaly supporting the funding to maintain a fleet or orbital defense platforms. This is seen all the time in europe. Were a lot of citizens of European countries don't support the funding of a large military.
That's what I always thought. The planet was described as pretty peaceful and people from all over the galaxy would go to visit and live there, so it makes sense they weren't used to war. The planet was so popular with everyone that "defenses in case of enemies" weren't really something they focused on.
@rozu7772 It's also a possibility that the planet is of little strategic importance. So whatever Empire or Central government. The planet falls under are simply not willing to commit the resources to having a fleet permintly stationed
My brother and I got this movie for Christmas in 2009, it was one of our favorite movies for years. I know it's not the greatest of films, but I still love it. Flaws and all.
Man, I always forget how odd the lore of the Riddick movies are. They just kinda toss you in and expect you to follow along. From facing Tyranids and Chaos Marines.
Evolution very rarely dose a perfect in evolution but sometime over millions of years and sheer persistence dose it come up with something perfect which can be applied to are own technology
He did explain where he got his eyes. Both in this movie and Pitch Black. Step 1: Unalive a few people. Step 2: Get sent to a slam where you never see the light of day again. Step 3: Dig up a doctor and pay him 20 menthols to shine your eyes.
Jack/Kira also said she couldn’t find anyone that would do a shine job “not even for 20 menthol kools.” It’s not out of character for riddick to lie about his past.
Hey man, I’m a huge Riddick fan, and your Pitch Black episode was my introduction to you, and I’ve been bingeing your vids ever since… I am outside a lot, lol, but I enjoyed it. Just from watching your videos, I know that the lizard creatures have blue blood is a spoiler that water will coming… Lol. I didn’t know that when I watched the movie though.

Man casually explaining how souls work through Science. I love this channel.
some modern humans still have a slight bit of the reflective sheen in some lighting but not to the degree that say a cat, or a dog has.
Lol

Humans are so damn cool. Like dude were concerned about aliens in space and the ocean and were weird af ourselves lmao
You should watch the documentary on how/why Neanderthals aren't extinct. 90% of people still share semblance of their/our ancestors.

The chronicles of Riddick has always been one of my favourite movies of all time, yes it may be cheesy, but it's great, thanks for covering this series, Roanoke!
I wouldn't say it is cheesy at all tbh
But also the converts would all be brought off planet so...*shrug*
I don't think Riddick knew he was a Furyan. It sounded to be like he was orphaned and put on another planet.
And also, the reason they freaked out about Riddick being a Furyan was because there was a sort of prophecy that the lead guy's empire would be brought down by a Furyan.
At least that was my understanding.

That is fiction and is not even theoretical. Its a made up anatomical adaptation in a science fiction novel. Any basis in real theoretical biology is very loose at best.

15:30 i liked the "matter" and "energy" part. Some RTS games, like Total Annihilation and Supreme commander actually use only those 2 resources to basically 3D print everything.
I just woke up, saw the upload, and my first thought was “okay Roanoke, serenade me with your sweet science”
Your determination to call Jack a combination of names is one reason why I love your videos
Finished the other chronicles of riddick video like 2 mins ago, what a fun coincidence! Love your vids, man!
Yeah me too I saw that video then I went to watch all the other videos lol
Vin Diesel plays DnD, Riddick's a 2.0 drow.
In the game he doesn't get his eyes from a doctor. He gets his arm stitched up by a doctor and then time freezes and a disembodied voice tells him that it will give him a gift and then POW! he's got sun sensitivity. No menthols necessary.
14:40 You're seriously gonna tell me you passed on
"You're soul is mine!"
I still hate how after the fun and campy 2nd movie, the third movie was basically just the first movie again, but worse.
Wasn't Riddick based off of a DnD Character of his?
Cuz it was a lie. Its like he didn't even know he was a furian
@@diomedes7971 Nah that's "The Last Witchhunter" another movie he made. The Riddick series is just one that he fucking loves doing so he got the rights to produce them exclusively so he can keep doing the role
Riddick was based on a drow ranger named Riddick, yeah.

Ive been asking for you to cover the Furyans for years now, thank you mister science man!!!
“I raise you Pedantic, AND Shallow…”
this is what I’m here for
I was hoping you would cover this. The PBU(Pitch Black Universe as I like to call it) is one of my favorites and hope to see
more from it eventually.
Small problem with that is the explanation he gives is the same in both movies. He got his eyes shined by a doctor while in prison.
@@Blasted2Oblivion he could be straight up lying about the surgery though. Nobody knows if he had the eye shine before he was in that prison. In Pitch Black, nobody recognized his eyes as a way to see in the dark. They only found out after Riddick told Jack how he got them
@@Tores444 It could have been intended as a lie a lie but we do see 5hat play out in Escape from Butcher Bay. Thus, it is the canonical explanation.
"I raise you pedantic and shallow" is a great line
Indeed, pedantic and shallow

Furyans are also likely better strategists than most humans, with strategic thinking being one of the main ways humans survive difficult, violent lives. So while they may not be the best engineering students, they can outmatch anyone in hand to hand combat. Furyan Football Strategy must be HELLA advanced, and they would DOMINATE in starcraft lobbies.
Good to know ☺️
25:45 The reason they let the beasts eat people is because if they reduce the number of prisoners they can fit more in the same size hole.

Aren't blue eyes thought to only be about 20k years old? And they're recessive, so they had to be a great adaptation (at least for getting people who had them laid).
Yes, could be, However it isn't even a color more of a density of color.

0:31 another one is here in Africa, where 2 the survivability of 2 diseases is greatly increased because a population has both of them
The diseases being sickle cell aenimia & malaria (if you're a geneticist here in Africa, we love teachingour students about it)
So,in populations where sickle cell aenimia is prevalent, the Malerial infection rate is increadibley low (even if these populations are in the middle of malarial hot spot)
Its because the Plasmodium parasite cannot infect the red blood cell, due to the sickle shape
BUT on the other side of the coin, the large populations of individuals with sickle cell are those whose genotype is heterogeneous for sickle cell (in other words, those that only have one copy for sickle cell, rather than 2 copies), so this why they don't have AS MANY sickle shaped red blood cells, nor as many issues that accompany the disease
Basically, their survivability of each diseaseis incresed because they have both diseases inhabiting their bodies

Step 2: Get sent to a slam where you never see the light of day again.
Step 3: Dig up a doctor and pay him 20 menthols to shine your eyes.
But it's not what actually happened. Only thing Pope Joe did was stitch up his arm.
