Driving since 1973, owned a few vehicles, and my view of auto gearboxes has never changed. Like me, it's an old fashioned theory, which stems from the trouble they gave us back then. Like your style, proper good motor engineer. Peace be unto you.
Autos have their place in my book. I usually look for autos for towing because I’ve seen too many clutches go prematurely & the autos seem to handle that sort of abuse better (but it is pricey when they do go). Everything else id go manual though - just simpler mechanics.
I remember these when brand new on the Met police fleet here in South East London, were pretty quick actually. First I saw them was in 1997 old shape short wheelbase high top riot van Mercedes Sprinter, the one you have I remember when new too. I also remember the LDV convoy’s they had and the MK4 MK5 to MK6 Ford transits too. I also remember the freight rover V8 riot vans, the sound they made was fantastic, even the LDV convoy V8 London ambulances. Good old 3.5 Rover V8 engine.

We have had a freight rover V8’s , ex police Rover P6’s and SD1’s and Vauxhalls and Ford Granadas and Ford Transits , I have a 1996 Mercedes Sprinter medium wheel base semi high top ex speed camera van now a camper van.
They ran those 96-98 sprinters for surprisingly a long time. I remember them barely hanging on in 2010 - They were gone by that xmas. Tough old machines they were.

its a gearbox fiesta weekender, just got that box fitted yesterday, chucked 50 miles on it, clutch is soooo light now lol gonna have to bleed the slave as if throw it from 3rd to 4th fast it crunches! top job as all ways Al
I love these old sprinters but for goodness sake give it some new paint because that one doesn’t look totally rotten yet. Their factory paint is trash and is pretty much the main reason they die.
Corrrr lummey , that auto box is much much better than those hatefull preselector semiauto boxes you get in sprinter ambulances , I have been put-off an ambulance to convert to living van for that very reason . I am defo going to bend your ear once I get the go ahead from mad quack to get my chuffin' licence back . What a cool van , make a brilliant camper . And auto so nice to drive, changes gear better than my 72 plate sprinter ,well I say mine . Toolbank works van ,😅 tbh Ale it's got to much computer crap in it , but doas shift , obviously stick to speed limit. Take mate , it's raining in Hampshire aswell 🌧️🌧️lol🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍

I keep catching sight of those mercedes estates, l need a merc estate but would prefer a an older one. I currently own 2 mercedes 1 being a e240 saloon petrol 2000 in gc with mot would you consider a swap maybe?? Only reason l need one is because l brought a newfoundland dog and never realised just how big they are!! Great videos keep up the good work

That cab without a rear is a perfect candidate for a Shorty project, can't say much for the stability of such a thing though... :P
Nice save - definitely ex-Met Police, it was used in the London Riots of 2011, plenty of pictures on the net in service.
