Hello everyone. I'm from India. I own a Jimny 5 door automatic. While I'm overall happy with the car, there are a few drawbacks as well. I feel 40 litre petrol tank is too small for a vehicle that gives approx. 9.8 kmpl mileage on hill roads. One gets an effective range of 350-380 km only. It becomes a real problem when one goes to remote corners of the Himalayas. These areas often lack gas stations. Another negative point I would like to mention is that it does feel a bit underpowered on steep hill roads. Most of the buttons and the gear selector are not backlit. The rear seat seat belt warning is another nuisance. One needs to keep these belts buckled even when the rear seats are unoccupied in order to silence the alarm. At this price point in India, there are other similar SUVs, that offer better value for money. Probably that is the reason the hype around Jimny died down pretty soon after its launch. Now, Suzuki is offering price cuts to boost sales. Yes, I must agree that its small size is a huge advantage in congested cities and narrow roads.
We looked at the Jimny but for the price you didn’t get much and the need to get off road was high as we already had a Ranger, we brought in a Hustler as the spec was way higher with better safety and being a hybrid. The JDM X-Bee is a similar size to the Jimny 5door but with a better ride with a 1000cc turbo Hybrid engine.
The hype is real. Nice car, nice toy, but people should know that it is incredible slow, and shakes way more than a normal car, of course, because it's not a normal car. Some people will love it, sure.
Jimny are meant to be upgraded. Like, some new rims and tires, front and rear bumper, some roof racks, additional headlamps, fug lights, a two ways radio and maybe a winch. Now that's my Jimny.
we went with the 3door auto, I found that there is no where to rest your left foot in the manual, and the 3door is more fun to drive, I didnt find it tiring taking it for a 700km drive pretty comfortable tbh, but my daily driver for 18 years has been a navara dual cab. At least you wont fall asleep at the wheel on long drives :D
I've just bought a 3-door auto in Kinetic Yellow (obnoxious but too cute). I love the auto, and coming from a 2 litre Volvo C30 I was concerned about the lack of speed and dodgy handling that so many reviews have pointed out. It's actually okay, and I'm quite enjoying the slower paced lifestyle 🙂
I've got a 3 litre V6, and going from 12l/100km to 7l/100km on fuel consumption more than makes up for it IMHO. I feel terrible about the waste of my current vehicle. I've been tossing up replacement options, and I've more or less decided on a Jimny 5-door auto. Hybrids are great but the mechanical complexity is a concern, as is the lack of ground clearance and decent 4WD setups they have. I don't do anything insane, but I do like to get outdoors and getting to the places I want to be for bushwalks, camping and the like does need something reasonably durable, and the Jimny does seem to be one of the few options that does that without too much techwank or a giant engine.
I think it will be unsafe to make this car go faster. Suzuki is smart, I think this is a good power to weight ratio. I would not be comfortable doing 120kmph in this
Didn’t get much response in the Indian market, so many unsold 23 models are available. I am Getting the Alpha AT for 23,250/- AUD in India. Thinking of getting it as my first 4wd. As Aussies have experience of Jimmy for years now, what do you guys say, should I get it?
Good news on the Green colour! Are you sure those prices are correct as that's not the price Suzuki gave to their dealerships yesterday, after I rang this morning?
@@therightcarOk confirmed on the manual white $34,990 > $39,990k on road ...so you were right. Thanks! Green and grey is $40,685 on road and the 2 tones versions are more again. Yeah I got the 2022 3dr manual version. I spent $20k in mods just to get it to the type of car they should have released from the factory floor. If you’re not going to modify this car then for sure you’ll sell it within 2 years of buying it. Standard version has terrible fuel range with only a 40ltr fuel tank, the standard suspension is seriously dangerous, the windscreen is a stone chip magnet so be prepared for oncoming trucks throwing those stones your way. The tyres are ridiculously small but understand you’ll use more fuel putting on bigger tyres. Like I said if your buying to modify for an unbeatable 4wd for play and ok daily that looks amazing then this is for you. If your buying with no intentions to modify and no real plans to use off road then chances are you’ll be so disappointed with your purchase you’ll either trade it in or sell it off before you add 10k on the clock. So how do I feel about my jb74, after completing all the mods I love it. Sure the constant stone chip broken windscreens drive me crazy but as a daily drive and weekend offroad adventure seeker it’s perfect.
Might not suit the needs for all of the fam but meh it's ok. I remember growing up and my dad bought a LADA..... I could have been such a cool kid.... Give me that Jimny anytime.
@therightcar ...you can say HA... I also do remember it never failing on us. My dad saw cars as a necessary expense he could save money on. He bought it cheap second hand as no-one even wanted to be found dead in them and drove it untill it was economically written off and it was still sound. Regular oil and stuff and that was it. I reckon it was the cheapest car to get you from A to B.
Hi and thanks for so much great info. Would you know if the Jimny engine is also installed in other Suzuki models? Maybe even with a turbo? :) Greetings and Merry Xmas, Andreas
What about steering wheel problem at 75 km(around) ? Owner of a 2006 model sold it and I regret it. Very good also for city use . Gave me a lot of offroading fun. Here in Greece we say very honest car. Probably I will buy the 3rd door as company car :)
Considering this for my 21 year old daughter but worried re safety? The lane departure warning is just a blinking light!? Drove the Tank based on your reviews but the tech killed me!! Thoughts on the safety of the Jimny XL??
Um, I would say that the safety is not going to be as good in this car as it is in the Tank. Fundamentally, this is smaller and lighter and has far less technology. The 3 door version only scored three stars in ANCAP a few years back and it’s gotten even harder to score well in that testing, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a 2 star score. Or worse. But still safer than some ten year old used cars. May I ask - why a 4x4? Does your daughter go bush camping or serious off-roading? If not, or even if she does go a little bit off road, a Subaru Forester or Crosstrek would be a better choice IMO.
Wow. Thank you so much for the reply! She basically wants what all the “cool” kids want at the moment, a mid ‘90s Pajero! But that’s a bad idea. So this is close as we get. I agree. The safety stuff really bothers me. Especially as she’s a very young driver. She does go camping a fair bit but drives to Melbourne from Adelaide more than camping. She wants a rugged car for the look but I despise CVT engines as we’ve had issues with them. Doesn’t leave many options but I dread her having to replace a dead CVT for $10k in six years. I’m going to try and push her to a Mazda CX 5? Boring but safe. Other than that it’s really only Honda, VW or the overpriced Skoda in that size range? It’s hard because there are just so many huge utes and huge SUVs that it makes driving in a sedan like we do currently really frustrating because you’re just seeing the huge car in front and nothing else!
Suzuki are very capable in making small FWD'S. It would be great to see them manufacture a bigger 4wd in the size range of a 70 series and with a diesel.
Hi. I test drove the 5 door Jimny and felt comfortable and fun . I only reached 70km p/hr so would like to know what it feels like at 100kms p/hr, especially freeway driving. Is there enough power / ease / and how it handles? Love the look of the Jimny but I'm on the road alot.
I would suggest you might find it to be a bit underwhelming in terms of grunt. It handles better in 5 Door spec in terms of road holding and bump absorption.
@@therightcar Thank you for your reply. I find all the hatches rather boring and love the look of the Jimny. I only need a smallish car, but not sure what to get, I love driving manual cars but this option is diminishing quickly on newer cars.
The funny thing is the rear cargo space when the rear seats of folded (by litres) is less than the 3 door..... Also, 4/5 of the Jimny's that come out 4wding at manual 👍
I want to like it but I'd hate to drive it on the highway with those power and torque figures and it's definitely a compromised vehicle from a safety point of view.
I think the power and torque won’t matter much to those who just want a fun little rig for urban and off-road duties. But the highway runs might be a bit of a task.

@Saravanan_Munuswami Nope, Suzuki is the costliest in every segment it is present in India, what you are saying is probably 10 years back in sub 4m Brezza is the costliest much higher than XUV300 and Fronx is also costlier than other products Thar RWD is much cheaper than Jimny and this is what sells Mahindra can't even compete with Maruti Products and moved one segment above giving Cheap versions of Toyota, Fortuner - Scorpio N and Cheapish Innova- XUV700, so Mahindra is still Cheap
Is the display between the speedo and tachometer slightly different than the 3door (2021 model)? Looked slightly different. If the emergency braking system is the same as the 3door, it’s basically useless. Too many false positives even if you’re the only thing on the road.
The head room in the Jimny is vastly superior to many sedans where your head would actually touch the roof. Children can actually see out of the car in the back seats, so they don't have to watch their mobile screens. Would I choose a $36,490 Jimny or a $70,000 gas guzzling pick-up truck? I would let the price decide.😅
I’d buy this today if it had a diesel. Anyone know of something same size with one and friendly for 2 baby seats? The older g class and defenders don’t fit the bill…
Alborz!! Legend!! This would definitely be a 'heart over head' decision for me. I absolutely love these, whether it's in 3dr or 5dr form and especially in Chiffon Ivory or Jungle Green, but no black roof, it needs to be the same colour as the rest of the vehicle and I much prefer the grill on the 3dr .... but alas, it's just not for me. You're basically paying for the vehicles offroad credentials and then some, because lets face it, it doesn't represent great value. It's outdated in many areas, which would suit some offroad enthusiasts, but would come as a shock to a lot of people expecting more from a vehicle with that price tag. This vehicle, in auto spec and more than likely will be the volume seller, is going to be very close to $40k once you add all the on road costs. If the world hadn't gone through all the sh*& it's been through for the last 3 years, this vehicle would be priced $10k cheaper than where it sits today, but that's out of our control. I'm not going to lie though, this would be a fun little vehicle to own and would probably put a smile on my face!
The biggest problem is the engine & transmission both of which do not cut the mustard in today’s world. It needs a decent turbo engine with a 6 speed transmission.

If you order it and before you pay the on-road costs. That’s where. Dealers in Suzuki-land seem to take the piss a bit with delivery fees and preparation of the cars…
This car could not pass safety standards in some countries and had to be registered as Agricultural vehicle to circumvent the regulations. I would not put 3 of my loved ones in this car, it is a death trap on the road, off road it is a beast and this is where I would drive it.
Calm down dude, if you check the actual EuroNcap rating it has a good rating for actually protecting the people inside. It also want banned because of safety concerns but because in Europe the emissions standards have risen to such a ridiculous level that the K15B(one of the most efficient NA engines Suzuki produces) didnt meet the standards set(hence why they dont get great cars like the XL7, Ciaz, Gran Vitara, Fronx or Baleno) when compared with the rest of their lineup. What they did is shift it to the commercial market where emissions standards are less stringent.
If only we got the Hustler here. It’s such a great choice. But there are like a dozen Suzuki JDM products that would also (in theory) be great in our market if cheap enough. The brand is looking at kei car choices….
Jimny is smaller, more nimble, lighter on its feet and feels made for the rough stuff. Tank is a far more loveable car on road. So if you know you’re only going off-roading sometimes, Tank is a better bet. But the Jimny XL is better than the 3 door on-road, by a measurable margin.
@@therightcar I don’t know how long Mahindra has been going for but at least here in New Zealand it is a fairly new/less recognised entrant. Suzuki has been around and has pretty much if not always had a good reputation for small off-roaders. I believe both (Mahindra and Suzuki) are made in India.

Thanks for that! You’re an awesome human for buying a Hustler. I’ve been toying with the idea for a while now.
@@therightcar have the 2020 model, the newer shape..they are actually pretty quick for a 660cc turbo hybrid 24L tank and 400kms cheap cheap
The hype is real. Nice car, nice toy, but people should know that it is incredible slow, and shakes way more than a normal car, of course, because it's not a normal car. Some people will love it, sure.
Plenty of people will love it, and forgive it its foibles.
Jimny are meant to be upgraded. Like, some new rims and tires, front and rear bumper, some roof racks, additional headlamps, fug lights, a two ways radio and maybe a winch. Now that's my Jimny.
buy the two door for cuteness and posing, get the base model tank 300 for everything else.
Ha! Good points.
The 2 door Jinmy is going for around 41k at the dealers. How much will this actually be? 50k?
we went with the 3door auto, I found that there is no where to rest your left foot in the manual, and the 3door is more fun to drive, I didnt find it tiring taking it for a 700km drive pretty comfortable tbh, but my daily driver for 18 years has been a navara dual cab.
If it is not with the under powered engine, this car could sell insane 😂
That’s mega cheap.
Good news on the Green colour! Are you sure those prices are correct as that's not the price Suzuki gave to their dealerships yesterday, after I rang this morning?
Those are the MSRP list prices. So, drive-away pricing is including the on-road costs will be higher. What did they quote you??
@@therightcar Was $38+ MSR for the manual in white. I just tried to completing a quote also and it's missing the quoted price. Doh Suzuki!
@@therightcarOk confirmed on the manual white $34,990 > $39,990k on road ...so you were right. Thanks!
Green and grey is $40,685 on road and the 2 tones versions are more again. Add another $1500 for Auto. The $5k in additional taxes and costs is crazy if I have to be honest. Dealer delivery charge is such a rip off.
Love this cabby my dream car.
Cool!
Thanks for your thoughts mate.
It s not needed karl! Jimny s good in stock
Most awaited
Hope you enjoyed the video!
In India Jimmy cost only 23 k aud . In Australia it's very expensive
I still think that a factory fitted TURBO will make the car even MORE APPEALING & MORE PRACTICAL 😀😇.
You bet it will!
Might not suit the needs for all of the fam but meh it's ok. I remember growing up and my dad bought a LADA..... I could have been such a cool kid.... Give me that Jimny anytime.
Haha!
Alborz jumpscare! 😂 Genuinely made me laugh.
We have fun!
This would be a great second car for the casual off roader. Wouldn’t care if it got a few dings on it.
I can't wait to get one of these! 🔥🤘
Nice! What colour?
@therightcar definitely want to get the ivory 🤘
I heard someone sells a bolt-on Supercharger kit for Jimny.
*Google activated!*
@@burningconfusion Nobody has ever said a mid 90s Pajero is cool. I had an NL, worst car ever.
Jimny 5MT, XL ✌️👍👍👍
They need to make it a convertible
Ha! I’d bet on a dual cab ute before a drop top.
I'd love to have one! but with a baby on the way I think it's just not big enough unfortunately.
I wish the Vitara still had some 4x4 capabilities.
The Vitara AWD is mildly capable off-road. Buy a Forester 👌👌👌👌
They're only AWD aren't they?@@therightcar
Good review 👍
Hello! I have a quick question. Is this good for rough roads. In my country the main roads are too rough and is it too slow when you're flooring it??
Yeah checked ou carsales averaging 40 to 48 can't find anything for 36k would def buy a tank 300 instead.
The prices I put in are before on-road costs. Suzuki dealers tend to add a wee bit more on top...
Jimny will last longer
Suzuki are very capable in making small FWD'S. It would be great to see them manufacture a bigger 4wd in the size range of a 70 series and with a diesel.
You didn't lay the back seats down . Is it flat , would have been good to see the size .
They do not lay completely flat like the 3 door.
Love this revieww
Thanks!
Looks good instead of boring white.
Yeah it’s a cool colour
I like manual. 👌
Any idea when the XL being ANCAP tested?
No idea. It might not be tested.
This is great. We will never get enough off roader options. By the way, isn’t the Tank 300 hybrid on road review coming ?
Thanks! Yep, it’s good to see a resurgence in this type of model range.
Tank hybrid review coming Wed 13 Dec at 4pm. 👍

HA!
Haha, the Bentley was a press test car driven by one of the big-wigs from another outlet.
It's funny, the XL here in Japan is the mid grade 3 door Kei class.
Yep - it’s a big rig in Japan 🇯🇵 🤣
I want to like it but I'd hate to drive it on the highway with those power and torque figures and it's definitely a compromised vehicle from a safety point of view.
I think the power and torque won’t matter much to those who just want a fun little rig for urban and off-road duties. But the highway runs might be a bit of a task.
Hi all, dumb question what fuel does Suzuki recommend , and what is everyone using, 91, 95, cheers
Fun fact the 5 door is actually cheaper than the 3 door in Costa Rica
You missed the most important safety system .It has 6 airbags 🎉
They call Mahindra cheap but not the Suzukis…..👍🏻
contrastingly in India Suzuki is cheap and Mahindra is premium :)
@@Saravanan_MunuswamiSuzuki and Mahindra would probably be on par in terms of reliability, spec, safety and driving… but Mahindra are literally much “cheaper”. (Suzuki being better for crash repairs)
Jeep has held the name for small off-roaders… But Mahindra just released the “Thar”, that’s an interesting situation🤷♂️
Mahindra is cheaper than most other brands in similar spaces.
@Saravanan_Munuswami
Nope, Suzuki is the costliest in every segment it is present in India, what you are saying is probably 10 years back
in sub 4m Brezza is the costliest much higher than XUV300 and Fronx is also costlier than other products
Thar RWD is much cheaper than Jimny and this is what sells
Mahindra can't even compete with Maruti Products and moved one segment above giving Cheap versions of Toyota, Fortuner - Scorpio N and Cheapish Innova- XUV700, so Mahindra is still Cheap
Okay mate.
I’d buy this today if it had a diesel. Anyone know of something same size with one and friendly for 2 baby seats? The older g class and defenders don’t fit the bill…
Better backdoor using flip up more convinience n spare tire use like lndcruiser
...😊
how does the longer wheel base affect the highway speed touring comfort?
It has a positive effect. In that, it's way more comfy. But it's also the same engine in a heavier car.
So wish we could get these in Europe... but doesn't look like we ever will...!! Just like the 70 series Land Cruisers.. Ho Hum!!
Hey, you guys in Europe get a whole bunch of great cars we don’t get! 🤣
@@therightcar No more traditional proper off roaders though... just crappy SUV's
You can bay this model in Poland. First delivery will be on March '24
Auto better than manual off-road 😊🎉
looking forward to the next Jimny model, or maybe a cyber truck price might come down in 10 years
Those are two very different propositions. 🤣
Alborz!!
They are great cars but were definitely better value when they first came out an started from 25k AUD
Thanks :D
Good car
The biggest problem is the engine & transmission both of which do not cut the mustard in today’s world. It needs a decent turbo engine with a 6 speed transmission.
We can dream. Or we can transplant 🤣
@@therightcar yes we can always dream. now for Suzuki to come to the party & give us what the Jimny desperately needs to be a truly great little car. A nice engine overhaul would just set things off perfectly. It has all the right elements. It’s just lacking the finishing touches.
More unreliable than natural aspirated
What is the kind of stuff missing in it in terms of interior dash instrumentation panel that so many people keep talking about? (Asking cause I don't know, have no experience with it)
It doesnt have the fancy 4.2" MID screen other Suzuki models get, but most of its functionality is in the new 9" infotainment screen.
Missing fully digital instrumentation, or even a digital speedo. Also missing keyless entry, push-button start.
@@therightcar to be fair there is no version of the Jimny that comes with a digital speedometer (Swift Sport only)or a digital drivers cluster(Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Suzuki Swace but those are two of the Toyota Twins. ).
@therightcar Hey there, I just got quoted from Suzuki $42000 driveaway for an automatic XL - why would it be so much more expensive than the price you stated at the start of your video?
Guys can I ask what state you are in being quoted that price of $42k and was that for an auto, cheers
Yeah it’s for an auto in Melbourne
Hi..greeting from Indonesia...I have now Toyota Innova Diesel fr family car, but I still have a dream to have this one as boy's toy for going to mountain, swamp or beach.
Selamat datang! Great to have you watching from Indonesia. Thank you!
What is the low range ratio?
If only Suzuki could upgrade the engine a bit for the five door version
42k driveaway. 40k for the 3 door. Was quoted yesterday.
Bit of dealer delivery cost added there… 🤣
I would like to see Suzuki fit a Japanese built, small 2 litre turbo diesel.
I want a diesel version
In Melbourne this car is no less than $42,000. Where exactly does this car cost $36k
If you order it and before you pay the on-road costs. That’s where. Dealers in Suzuki-land seem to take the piss a bit with delivery fees and preparation of the cars…
Cost me approx 25230 australian dollars in india manual top trim bought today
Good one!
How is the gearshift on manual?
Pretty good. I mean, it’s not Civic Type R levels of smooth, but it’s a light action.
So the big difference between this and the Indian version is the lack of push button start, dissapointing.
Didn’t even pick up on that. Good point!!
Not a fan. Suzuki really cut corners unnecessarily in order to turn a profit on this (like volume controls in the touchscreen, among other things).
I think the direct mechanical 4 wheel drive selector was chosen due to the failure rate of electronic selectors
Where is this made?
India.
Yep it’s India - constructed from a Complete Knock Down (CKD) kit.
Nah. Suzuki Hustler is what city 4wd vehicles need to be. Smaller, but more interior space. JDM FTW.
If only we got the Hustler here. It’s such a great choice. But there are like a dozen Suzuki JDM products that would also (in theory) be great in our market if cheap enough. The brand is looking at kei car choices….
You would need to be a fan to buy one. Looks like poor value to me, unless you prioritise off roading above all else.
Nah people just like cool cars.
These will last an age!
True@@therightcar
Same with the 3 door. You get it cos you like it. Not cos it’s sensible.
@@hhhs001why would you buy a car you don’t like
Low engine power, being a 4 seater and not a 5 seater, are the disadvantages for me
What would you say is more off road capable from your experience, Jimny or Tank 300
Do you agree a 1.5L turbo or a 2.L NA would help the performance, also a 6 or 7 speed AT transmission, wake up Suzuki.
I agree. A turbo engine would transform it.
The Scorpio just got a Zero Star ANCAP rating so there is also that to consider.
Yep, that’s true. I don’t know if the Jimny XL is going to be a standout scorer if it gets tested….
