As a Jimny owner, this car is so good in town. It's so easy to park. It's got amazing visibility and has soft sqegy tires which are great for potholed Melbourne roads.
This XL version definitely gives it more car and weight, so it's not toppled over as easily. But I still think that Last-gen Suzuki Grand Vitara in the Holden/GM V6, with 4WD, and 6-gear is the better off-roader. Or maybe soft-roader is the better term for these vehicles. They're just a tick above other cars like the Subaru Forester or Toyota RAV4, and basically a tick below the Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Prado. And for the more serious stuff there is the Toyota LandCruiser or Jeep Wrangler.

@@martyn_g I honestly don't know. I think the Willys/Wrangler is built simple/different. And they have a lot QC issues. But most people still call it reliable or good at off-roading. Got the top spec for 16k USD on road in India, agree it is hugely under powered, but a throttle controller can help in the sluggish gear changes. For sedate driving in tough, narrow and broken hilly roads in India, the Jimny is perfect, since we only get the 5 door XL version, it is what it is, and loads of people who were holding on to their 20 year old Samurai's are now updating to the Jimny, so it definitely has it's place, and it is not for everyone.

For me the Jimmy xl is a great fit if you have children and want a proper 4x4 less than $40k and understand it isn’t designed as a regular SUV commuter. It is slow on highway and not fast around corners. Any other proper off-roader is going to be double the cost of the Jimmy. I actually like the fact it doesn’t have all the smart dumb technology in the car, I can drive it without the car interfering with my driving. I like the scratchy plastics it means they robust and last. I like the fact the engine is simple no turbo, it means I can service and repair it. I like it has a proper spare tyre.I like the back seat is high so children can see the view from the front window.
Yeah my gripe is the lack of power on the 5 door for highways etc . Put off-road tyres and a lift with better suspension and a more powerful motor and you have a giant killer . I used to have a 3 door Sierra so country driving very noisy and sluggish but great off-road .
I like the reverse camera angle, great for judging exactly how close you are to something, anything else you should be able to see with the mirrors. I don't really see the need for much distance in that camera (most people don't reverse at 70). Overall, I like it. Some decent shocks will help with the B-roads and corrugations, otherwise it's pretty much ready to play out of the box.
Inflation has been crazy since 2018 when the Jimny launched. If the 2door was $30k it would cost almost $36 today, just with inflation. I think $38 for the 4 door is fine. I bought a Toyota 86 for $30k (inc onroads) in 2013, the new GR86 base manual is $48k (which I personally think is insane but given the above example seems about right considering the Jimny example).
Small correction? Unsprung mass is the suspension. Sprung mass is the car on the springs. Would say this car has 'heavier' unsprung weight (live axles) and 'lighter' sprung weight (small body, simple interior) than say a unibody SUV of similar size
Unsprung weight is the weight of a vehicle's parts that are not supported by the vehicle's suspension and move up and down with the wheels when the vehicle travels over bumps and other obstructions. This includes the wheels, tires, brake assemblies, differential, solid drive axles, hubs, and anything directly connected to the wheels.
11:00 there's a reason for that steering being like that, it's by design; look it up. It's like this reviewer knows nothing other than sports cars, nothing about what it takes to build a very efficient solution to a problem statement. To him, it looks like 'performance' = only speed and quickness and size. How foolish. Here in India, we have 2 of the 5-door versions. One for my parents who live off-road, in a remote farm. It's godsend. Because of this, they have a 4×4 (a feature used often enough) that is not uncomfortable to ride (all other reviewers were impressed with the suspension, except for this guy) and easy to get into with their arthritis, and all this at a superb price. There's never been a deficit we faced with it, except dad doesn't like the turning radius. The narrow dimension is very useful, the power delivery is definitely adequate (I cruise at 115 kmph at full payload), and we are no longer worried about getting stranded when it rains heavily. I use mine in the city. I love it. Potholes and undulations are no longer an issue.
Considering all the nanny state safety systems that drive us all crazy in cars these days, why do they allow cars to do such hgh speeds in reverse? Alot of people struggle doing 70km/h going forward!
I once towed 600kgs with my 3 door Jimny and that was scary. 80 was the fastest I felt safe going and on a uphill run from a standstill the loaded cement truck in front of me was pulling away with ease. It’s insane to think I was towing less than half of its allowed tow capacity.
I owned the 3 door for 6 months but I had an argument with a tree while offroading and now I own the 5 door. I wish it had 100-120 KW but it is fun offraod
I got the new top spec 5 door and I love it! Only problem with it is the power. You're going to have to either get it tuned or get a throttle controller for the lag.
I’m in Australia and my mate had old 3 door JIMNY and it’s massive off road ability Is just hillarious way better than cruiser and utes in most sand and mud circumstances
In Asia, the previous Sierra was available in similar LWB guise but as a mini Dual Cab ute. They need to apply that body style to the Jimny XL and release in AU where utes are top sellers
Question when your driving around the corners at speed on the test track your not driving in your lane as you would in real life meaning you would probably drive slower because of more body roll
Hi, OK well if you look back, the Jimny or Samurai as it was called in other countries never had a five door, the new one is a step up, however the price doesn't justify the five door for me either, it should be a little cheaper for the compromises you have to make on road, however it manages very well off road and I'm not surprised by it. If you do offloading in the outback a lot, with some bigger wheels it will be good, if it's just for around town or on the motorway better go for something else
A little turbo kit is a good thing. Most owners have to put better suspension and tyres on these to make it safer on road. Should have it from factory.
Hi paul, nice video, love the looks of Jimny either 3 doors and 5 doors,it needs the same running gear from the Vitara 1.6 with 6 speed Auto as standard 2wd and options and 4wd with bigger wheels 1.4lt turbo and 6 speed manual or 6 speed auto for top range model it would be a fair price for 2wd 1.6 manual from 27k up to 38k drive away! for 5 door and 3 doors from 24 up to 35k it would be good choice for any buyer's....
All grip means all wheel drive now?? They’re not all wheel drive are they? Still has a dual speed transfer case selectable 4wd low and high range? At least my 2024 does.
Price is worth it IMO. It's still only half the price of many full size 4x4's while offering the reliability of Japanese vehicles. To find a new 4x4 in the Jimny's price range you have to go with models of questionable reliability such as GWM Tank or Mahindra Scorpio.
I really wanted to like the 5 door Jimny. But the high cost low power make it a no go. It needs a 2.0 high output engine or at least a 1.8 with electric motors
I drove a Sierra for a while in the 90’s and while that was just a tin box on wheels I had a lot of fun driving it. These days I have less tolerance for all the engine noise but I get why a Jimny might be fun to drive… and yet I don’t think I could even buy a 3 door since I wouldn’t be off road enough and it’s basically just a fashion item around the city, like trying to run in Gucci work boots. The 5 door seems like it might be aimed at families but you’d have to be a moron to buy such an unsafe car to drive your kids around day to day. Maybe a hybrid with a decent battery might lower its centre of gravity and give it a bit more torque for those who want it as a city car… it’s a shame it’s so shit because I like the look of them and would be interested if it was as practical as it is attractive and fun.
I just love the Suzuki's, both cars and motorbikes. Just so disappointing with the on road performance. For the price, really what are they thinking. Needs a bigger motor. 🤫
All your hill tests on different videos go up the hill going forward and not in reverse. As sometimes your situation requires you to reverse back the way you came on tight track off roading.
The reason Suzuki didn't put the turbo engine in it is because of reliability, a NA petrol engine is far more reliable, this is formost a extremely rugged industrial japanese car, not a mall crawler.

There's probably 20k 3 doors sold... and the 3 doors hold their value better than the 5 doors, so I dunno if it says that the customers want the less offroad focussed 5 door as much as you might think.
On road handling is shocking and no wonder this thing didn’t get ANCAP rating for it, did they? We had the 3door and 5door and 5door was better but still not worth that price, given what’s available.
Was there anyone asking for this? Maybe overseas people. What they should of done is made it a 2 seater lifestyle ute, basically slap a tray on the back.

I used to have a 3 door Sierra so country driving very noisy and sluggish but great off-road .
paul you should add a portion in the next videos where you can hear the car starting up and revving :)
Yes. That would be the cherry on top to these videos
Very popular, reliable and economical car, owners just love them😊
The camera angle is good especially for tight spot reverse parking. You can use rear view mirror to see further
Whos whatching now 2nd of September? Im obsessed with car's ❤
If Suzuki ever decides to sell them in the US of A, I’ll buy one immediately.
Would love to see Suzuki bring back the Jimny traytop ute.
I hope Suzuki comes back to Canada with something like this!
I’d be ok to buy something like this online!
Considering all the nanny state safety systems that drive us all crazy in cars these days, why do they allow cars to do such hgh speeds in reverse? Alot of people struggle doing 70km/h going forward!
its meant to be a no-frills no-fuss, fun off-roader. The people that's complaining can move along to a soft-roader SUV.
But it will be offroad less than 10% of its life....
I once towed 600kgs with my 3 door Jimny and that was scary. 80 was the fastest I felt safe going and on a uphill run from a standstill the loaded cement truck in front of me was pulling away with ease.
It’s insane to think I was towing less than half of its allowed tow capacity.
It's old school and I love it!
Great review. I wish Suzuki brought these to the US.....I'd seriously consider a 4 door.
I owned the 3 door for 6 months but I had an argument with a tree while offroading and now I own the 5 door. I wish it had 100-120 KW but it is fun offraod
Overpriced by $10,000 . I would spend another $10,000 and get a GWM Tank 300.😊
but the gwm wont last a couple years this jimny will outlive many ppl.
@@syrus1233 Thats literally what the Americans said about Toyota when it first came to USA...You look like a clown right now lol.
@@syrus1233
I don't think you know what you are talking about. 😊
@@buncha5651 i dunno cant even break hard with out the rear wheels come up off the ground in GWM tank..
"I'd rather spend 20k more than what I think the car is worth to get a car whose rear wheels lift off the ground"
its electronic power steering last i looked. Also the steering ratio is not so much vague but geared slow as most offroad vehicles are.
I got the new top spec 5 door and I love it!
Only problem with it is the power. You're going to have to either get it tuned or get a throttle controller for the lag.
what else is cheaper with the same off road capability?
Ive no idea. Duster if kitted out or Niva.
I’m in Australia and my mate had old 3 door
JIMNY and it’s massive off road ability
Is just hillarious way better than cruiser and utes in most sand and mud circumstances
Paul you say if you need a bigger SUV buy something else, but there's nothing else with this offroad capability on the market at this price point.
Is it capable offroad in stock form though?
@@notagain2856 absolutely
@@notagain2856 absolutely
@@notagain2856it's got ladder frame, dual solid axels and ball joint steering, these aren't for crawling malls these are for serious off roading
In Asia, the previous Sierra was available in similar LWB guise but as a mini Dual Cab ute. They need to apply that body style to the Jimny XL and release in AU where utes are top sellers
Must be great when you arrive in the bush, but getting there , maybe not so good.
Can you please do another test but with passengers this time wanna see how it performs .
"All Grip" is the term for part time 4WD of Jimny.
I bought a Suzuki vitara because of the plastics I have two dogs so it is perfect for being able to clean it down .
Switchable overdrive ! The 1980s lives !
20:45 How much engine braking does the auto trans have under "manual gear control"? Maybe just gently ride the brakes during hill descent?
Question when your driving around the corners at speed on the test track your not driving in your lane as you would in real life meaning you would probably drive slower because of more body roll
Imagine something with the practicality and usability of a Rav4 and the off-road prowess of the Jimny. Magic!
Definitely a missed opportunity by Suzuki. 180kph Speedo is a bit optimistic. 2.0L turbo would have been the way to go.
Love all your reviews. Only test I don’t get is testing the max speed in reverse. Apart from it being a bit of fun 😂
High speed reverse test is very important in a tank to reverse out of danger. Maybe its the same purpose in these reviews.
A little turbo kit is a good thing. Most owners have to put better suspension and tyres on these to make it safer on road. Should have it from factory.
Voids warranty thou😮
Great stuff mate
Hi paul, nice video, love the looks of Jimny either 3 doors and 5 doors,it needs the same running gear from the Vitara 1.6 with 6 speed Auto as standard 2wd and options and 4wd with bigger wheels 1.4lt turbo and 6 speed manual or 6 speed auto for top range model it would be a fair price for 2wd 1.6 manual from 27k up to 38k drive away! for 5 door and 3 doors from 24 up to 35k it would be good choice for any buyer's....
I agree with @TemuGod1313 what do u guys think?
All grip means all wheel drive now?? They’re not all wheel drive are they? Still has a dual speed transfer case selectable 4wd low and high range? At least my 2024 does.
In India I got 20000 USD ….3 months ago .. I love the car
in india we get wireless not wired and also push button start - are these different there?
Price is worth it IMO. It's still only half the price of many full size 4x4's while offering the reliability of Japanese vehicles. To find a new 4x4 in the Jimny's price range you have to go with models of questionable reliability such as GWM Tank or Mahindra Scorpio.
Did you mention the roof max load (30 kg) so roof top tent options limited ???
"Its got a fair bit of body roll " my G that thing wants to topple over and be on its side.
I really wanted to like the 5 door Jimny. But the high cost low power make it a no go. It needs a 2.0 high output engine or at least a 1.8 with electric motors
I just want a fold down windscreen and soft top. I have a 92 Sierra and as much as I love it it's getting a little bit old
dis the payload increase as well or just the weight?
Paul when are you gonna get your hand on a Mazda 6 20th anniversary edition or Atenza ?
Would be great to see a review !
How come you guys never review the fiat 500
I just love the Suzuki's, both cars and motorbikes. Just so disappointing with the on road performance. For the price, really what are they thinking. Needs a bigger motor. 🤫
So what you’re saying is keep the 200 series.
What mode do you need to do reduce those flaws
I really don't know why suzuki offer a 1.5 turbo option or even 2lt....
What are you doing Lehman? You really should lower your profile at the moment
Hello! Who is your favourite Griffin's character?
16:20 Most possibly the only channel in the world who tried max reverse speed in a Jimny🤣
I had a Sierra 1984 back in the day and to think the underpowered engine is still in it now is abysmal .
Is there a link for the review of the 2019 ford ranger raptor?
Why are they so popular? I personally would not go near one. Thanks for the review.
When are we going to see a Grenadier review?
The 5-door existing tells you that most Jimny customers don't go off-road
Here in India, we have 2 of the 5-door versions. One for my parents who live off-road, in a remote farm. It's godsend. Because of this, they have a 4×4 (a feature used often enough) that is not uncomfortable to ride and easy to get into with their arthritis, and all this at a superb price. What a dumb comment. Some people just want more space.
You kidding, one of these built would be an animal off-road, and there are people who have done chassis extensions on the 2 door ones.
Iv always ❤ the Jimmy & this 5door version is a "God" send.
There's probably 20k 3 doors sold... and the 3 doors hold their value better than the 5 doors, so I dunno if it says that the customers want the less offroad focussed 5 door as much as you might think.
I often wish I didn’t get a triton so I could reason with myself that I don’t need the extra practicality, unfortunately I have gone soft 😢
Jimny is a great car, only the engine and gearbox is really bad…
Oddly enough, when your are tooling around while driving across sandy / boggy / uneven ground, speed and power do not matter so much.
How can a car be "great" if very important elements like engine and gearbox are "really bad"?
So it's not a "great" car then lmao.
On road handling is shocking and no wonder this thing didn’t get ANCAP rating for it, did they? We had the 3door and 5door and 5door was better but still not worth that price, given what’s available.
I wish they’d sell this in the US.
It’s more impressive than I thought on road, I’m just wondering were you expecting it to perform like a Ferrari 😂
Possibly my retirement car
Was there anyone asking for this? Maybe overseas people.
What they should of done is made it a 2 seater lifestyle ute, basically slap a tray on the back.
There is a ute variant in NZ
@bobmarli6095 its not from factory, its a $12k mod.
Imagine if it was sold from factory at the same price.
