- MonkeyFeet exercises are reviewed by a Physical Therapist. The Monkey Feet device by Animalhouse Fitness is gaining popularity thanks to @The Kneesovertoesguy endorsement. He demonstrates how to use it for hip flexor strengthening. Watch as a Doctor of Physical Therapy reviews the monkeyfeet exercises in detail. Be sure to watch the entire video as I demonstrate unique ways to use this device to challenge your hip flexors in multiple ranges. I will be reviewing the Hip flexor strengthening with the monkey feet, the hamstring curl with monkey feet, hip abduction, donkey kick, and knee extension all with the monkey foot. Hip flexor strengthening is definitely underperformed in gyms and homes across the globe and hopefully this will get people to begin to change that. Having strong powerful hip flexors is a must if you are looking to jump higher or run faster.

Question: Reference (Prone Hamstrimg Curl) Do you think it would be effective to attach a band to the dumbbell with the anchor distanced purposefully to create tension right around where the movement switches to gravity creating the need to keep squeezing ham into the flexion?
@@worshipfit That is an interesting thought and would be effective. If I understand you correctly, it would be a bit tricky to set up.
@@MovementProjectPT thank you for responding.

Great review!! Thank you for getting straight to it and not spending the first 5 minutes of the video trying to get me to subscribe to your channel! Also, I love your pros and cons breakdown of the 4 recommended exercises. I subscribed because you're knowledgeable and not pushy or boring👍
Thank you!

Great honest review. Thanks for showing all the exercise and how it performs for each.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment!
awesome!! I've been doing some of these with a homemade fix but I wasnt sure which were too much for my knee. Thanks!!!
Happy to help!
Mine just arrived today. Thank you for the video 💪🏼💪🏼
My pleasure - Enjoy it!
I hope the company is paying dude for this video to be up ... this was an outstanding demonstration .... this is why professionals should be doing this sort of thing .... they not only showcase the equipment, but explain in simple detail how every limb and every muscle is affected
They are not! Probably made them
Some good money….
I mostly use it for the hip flexer exercise. I usually stand on a box with the other foot to get full range of movement.
I had the same concerns about this product. You're an amazing PT !
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the review. To be clear, I still use monkeyfeet to this day and think it is a great product.
Thanks for your honest answer you didn’t give a one side opinion I love that will definitely subscribed
Thanks! That’s my goal 👍
I got one and only use it for high knees but watching this i am going to try switch to sitting. Thanks for the honest and fair review, i think there are better products if I am honest.
too informative, had to sub it up, thanks for your great work
Awesome, thank you!
I use circa 1960's iron boots- two of them, for prone leg curls on the bench and the principle is the same as the Monkey Feet. I've done those for many years with no injury and the key is just to curl the weight upward until vertical and return to horizontal when the weight wants to to fall toward the flutes. You get real good contraction that way- good as on a typical curl machine in a gym at the least.
intelligent, informative and comprehensive. would suggest complementing the monkey foot with a mobility stick for better posture and stability in the standing exercises-unless you are also working balance
Great point...love it! Thanks for the kind words
Great insights here, thanks for spreading some solid knowledge!
My pleasure! I definitely like the product andnow use it regularly. Glad to have it as part of my home gym arsenal. Keep up the good work!
Can you use these bare foot?
@@jimmyjohnjuan You can but the fit is not as snug. I don't know what the manufacturer says about this so dont take my recommendation and any more than I have tried it

Glad you liked it!
Nice video. Thanks for pointing out the limits for how wide of a shoe can be accommodated. That saved me the $70-80, as my running shoes all seem to be 3.5 inches wide.
Glad you found it helpful! I do like the monkey feet, but as mentioned in the video it does have some minor limitations
They have a larger size.
Maybe get a slimmer shoe like converse as you won’t be running while using this device .
Got mine yesterday. I love mine so far! 😊
Awesome review, thanks! I've been thinking of trying this mostly for hip flexion.
Go for it! I am still using it one year later.
that's what I use it for. I stand on a box with the oposite foot. I get beter range of motion that way.
Thanks for the review. I was hoping this tool would be a suitable at home hamstring exercise, but no go. Looks like it could be a good tool for hip flexion only, with perhaps the donkey kick. I appreciate your guidance.
Solid for standing hamstrings for sure. Just not for prone hams
Need a good solid block to stand on to allow more range of motion
Working wonders for my pt process
Glad it helps!
I just got a monkey foot specifically to train my hip flexors. Thank you for showing the ways to train in a lengthened and shortened position! I would have just done the classic version otherwise. I'll definitely also be careful using the device for knee extension.
Good Luck and stay after it!
Ya these modifications are worth their own video 🤌
Nicely done! I like how you work around flaws in the design!
Glad you like it!
Great video and explaining different movements however you did not mention leg extensions. But I personally believe that doing leg extensions is a great beneficial option with monkeyfeet.

This is when I review knee extensions. Are you referring to something else?
Thank you sooo much!!

Hi Tim - I would LOVE a video talking about strategies to avoid shin splints. Personally, I struggled with them a lot until I started adding in Tibialis exercises like you mentioned in another video. However, I have some friends who are still struggling, and I wonder if there are some other remedies out there other than "Stop Running!"
Fantastic comment. I just put shin splint video right into my “to do”lineup. Thanks!

Nice review I just subscribed
Awesome thank you!
I hope I can fit into these, my shoes and boots and sandals are size 14 .
Thanks for the review! Wondering if i can get the same benefit of hip “strength” doing kettle bell swings and progressively overloading?
Classic kettlebell swings would be working a different group of muscles and movement. It is a phenomenal exercise however and I definitely recommend them
great review
Thanks!
Do the knee extensions lying on your back if you do them.
Any thoughts on dumbbell leg curls?

Damn skippy Benny!
Thanks for the video! Have you used them with your selecttechs?
Yes I have. They work well. Just need to be careful you’re not too hard in them
The amount of times mentioned knee wobble instability issues makes it a no for me. Thanks for the honest review
Glad you found it helpful. It’s definitely a great device for the hips. In still use it 1-2 times per week for hip flexors.
Agreed, was about to buy but with a bad knee I don’t need more cautionary devices
Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful!
I found that by using my incline bench (where the seat adjusts to support an incline bench press), I have far better success with leg extensions. I usually will set it at a slight incline and put a yoga mat under my leg. I didn't have any knee pain (and I have bad knees) and felt the focus on the quads far better (and I was able to full extend, given my foot didn't hit the ground due to the incline bench).
Good tip….Thanks Trey!
Any chance you can send a photo or video? Can’t quite picture this in my head!
@@Mixedbydavey Sorry, but I can describe a bit better.
My bench's seat can incline. I set the incline on the seat and a slight incline on the back of the bench (for support).
I roll up a yoga mat and place it under the leg I want to work (under the knee pit) to give my leg and the monkey feet enough room NOT to hit the floor.
Then I do the leg extension with that leg.
@@treyvincent1759 You should just film this and upload it on your youtube channel.

Thx 4 telling me the shoe size
Thank you so much... Do you think a 13 year old athlete can do the hip flexor exercise with the appropriate weight ? A little afraid because of his age I might hurt him because the body isn't developed. What's your insight on this?
Lots of research on weight training in youth now that should put your mind at ease. No stunting growth or injury from appropriately loaded exercises. I have 10 and 13 year old boys and I have them bench press, squat, and deadlift (light weights and high reps with huge focus on form at all times). I need to see perfection in form before any weight can be added. Good luck!
Very helpful There was one exercise I wanted you to test and that was for the tibia. How would you say it works for that?
If you mean the tibialis anterior raises, you cannot use the monkey foot effectively for that exercise due to the position of the load and the fixed nature of the monkey foot.
@@MovementProjectPT thank you
If someone's tib tires before the hip flexor and since nature usually gets things right, then my first instinct would be that maybe the focus should be to strengthen the tib to where it should be before increasing hip flexor strength. What do you think ?
Awesome question! Keep in mind that nature never intended us to have a kettlebell strapped to our foot so the muscles aren't meant to be worked in that fashion. Think about your shoulders for an analogy. If you wanted to load your deltoids for growth/strength, taking the forearm out of the equation will increase raining response of the deltoids. If you try to use a load necessary to strengthen the deltoids but put it through the wrist, you are likely to cause an injury to the wrist or elbow. A careful evaluation of each person would help us determine if initial focus should be on ankle or hip as you mentioned. Most people tend to be so weak in the hips relative to "norms" that we usually start with that as a focus.
I have weak tib as well. When I swam with rocket fins on my feet I cramped so badly in my calves and my hip flexor were too weak. I wish I had monkeyfeet at the time. ... some would say I have weak genes. Lol
@@vlun121 we used rocket fins in the Navy. They mine as well have been planks for plywood hahaha
I suppose for the deconditioned an ankle weight would be as good but it does offer something for the athletic.
Spot on!
An unbiased opinion. I dig. I dig.
That was the plan Thanks for the comment!
3:38 I thought that at first too, but you can't wear them as a pair. Also hamstring curls simultaneously? Leg flexion? One at a time is how god intended us.
Thanks! This helps a lot-- I wanted to buy it, but I won’t. I can do the excercise without locking the dumbbell. I was thinking locking it on would help me do the other exercise that I needed the dumbbell to be locked on. But seems to be a bad idea :D
Glad it helped you make decisions. I do like my monkeyfeet and am glad I purchased but there are other options if you are looking to maximize return on your home gym investment.
Is this a good tool for specifically training your joints? I'm trying to make my fingers, wrists, and many other joints as strong as possible.
Well this won’t help your fingers but hips and knees for sure!
Hello I was wondering if using the monkey feet as extra load would be safe and very helpful for doing of the other Myrtl exercises as I noticed you said it was particularly good for donkey kicks (for instance would using the monkey feet while doing donkey whips, knee circles, lat. leg raises, and fire hydrants put my joints at very high risk like with the knee extension or would it help me with building stability/strength with hips and glutes like with donkey kicks). I am a big fan of the Myrtl exercises so was curious.
Most of the maneuvers in that program are not going to benefit from the load position on this device since it is beyond the foot. Maybe the hurdle trail leg moves but that would be about it. Thanks!
@@MovementProjectPT thank you for response, would using resistance bands instead of weights/monkey foot be a good alternative to making myrtl's harder, or is that also no benefit?
@@SP-gr3pw Bands would definitely work for some of them as would traditional ankle weights. This is the Amazon recommended version:
amzn.to/3BLSYpG
If we want to make the hamstring curling one better for our joint would lying down flat on something then pulling it up alleviate stress on the joint while still working the muscle the same?
You mean like a prone hamstring curl machine?
@@MovementProjectPT Yeah I think so
When is going to be available in Amazon?
Not sure. I emailed the company and it sounds like they are looking at some different things to advance.
Thanks for the review! The main thing that has turned me off is the fact that it can't some width of shoes. If they can fit your runners, how many of my patients are going to have the same problem? Would love if they had adjustment so you could move the weight more anteriorly and perform tib ant raises too.
I agree, a little wider would have been a game changer. Also agree about the tib raise capacity but then you would lose the fixed nature of the device which allows it to work the hip so well. I will be reviewing a tib bar next week so stay tuned!
Hi so I really wanted to do this standing for hamstring curls and on my stomach. You don’t think it’s good for the joints? So do donkey kicks only ? What is best for this w my butt ???? I’m trying to help out my cellulite. Please help! I love “if you wanna keep improving, keep it moving,” I teach yoga and will share w my students !!!!!!
Thanks for commenting! It's works well for hamstring curl in standing, the key is to keep the hip extended so that the effect of gravity is maximized and you shorten the hamstring maximally at the top. The one on the stomach will only work for about 40% of the range of motion but when combined with the standing, could be useful. If you don't have a history of any knee joint injuries, I wouldn't worry about the knee joint stress. Keep it movin!
12:46 leg extensions. If we do at a higher bench/bed, does the bottom of the knee have to be as close to the bench . I find that still limit range of motion even with a higher bench. If we were to have the edge of the bench at our mid thigh, it allows more range of motion but the knee is hanging more free. Is that bad for the knee if the edge is farther from the knee and closer to our mid thigh?
Not bad for the knee but it would require more con contraction of the hip flexors since that is now being resisted slightly. Not bad, just may decrease the amount of weight you can lift.
could you possibly explain how putting the load beyond the foot during leg extension causes shear force at the knee?
Because it increases moment arm. This exponentially increase the forces at the knee. Think about prying a can open. The force at the can is way higher when the prying force is applied further from the can.
Would you recommend avoiding hamstring curls with the monkey foot altogether? Or do you still think it's a worthwhile exercise but perhaps proceed with caution or use less weight? Would ankle weights be a better option because they place the weight on ankle rather than below the foot?
I like ankle weights if you can get them heavy enough. I love my monkey feet for hip flexors
@@MovementProjectPT thanks for the reply! Do you use monkey feet for leg raises and/or lateral hip raises?
@@kevinmerfeld1204currently I just use it for hip flexion in standing. Occasionally hanging from a bar to engage abs more
8:53 if we do the high knees supine and lying down with the monkey feet, is it still aligned well directly below like you explained and resulting in less joint stress? i don't knwo if its dependent on gravity for the benefit of the exercise.
For the standing version, did you put a 10lb plate to elevate?
Yes, the alignment is still good but there is more back stress (potentially). Be sure to keep your abs tight! It was a 25# plate in the video. Thanks!
Would a lying leg extension for quads be better on the knee? e.g. same movement but on back, knee pointed towards ceiling, lower leg extending from 90 degrees to straight (pointing towards wall then ceiling). This way the moment arm would decrease as the leg extends and the most load would be while the knee is bent and the patellar tendon is under less sheering force. I guess it might not work the same parts of the quad?
Good thought and you are correct about the decreased shearing forces at the knee...but:
1. Since your hip is flexed, your hamstrings will be tightened providing increased resistance.
2. You will immediately lose resistance from the weight once you begin to lift the leg because the moment arm of the weight decreases as you lift
@@MovementProjectPT True, hard to find exercises to load legs properly at home. Gotta keep trying to convince the family to let me put a belt squat in the living room lol, until then it's bulgarian split squats and rdl's I guess
Would you recommend these for someone recovering from an Achilles tear? In pt I use ankle weights for leg extensions, leg raises and side leg raises. Would ankle weights be better?
Did you have reconstruction? How far along are you in recovery? Ankle weights or monkeyfeet could work. It doesn't really apply any additional pressure to the tendon
@@MovementProjectPT Thanks for the reply! I’m 3.5 months post-op for an Achilles tendon repair. I’m about 2 weeks in to walking with a shoe. I’m at neutral dorsiflexion at the moment so walking is still tough. If you see value in monkey feet to strengthen my leg muscles, I’ll definitely give it try
I have bad knees with old acl surgeries. I wanted to get this but I’m worried about pressure on the knee due to dumbbell wobble or location of weight
Would be great for hip flexion and donkey kicks
Definitely see kneesovertoesguy!
I wish they accommodated athletes with larger feet I ordered a pair and I couldn’t get them to fit on my shoe, not even close. Looks like a great product.
I've actually been using this lately. Works well as long as you're not using excessive weight. amzn.to/471888X
I just use the cable machine or you can buy resistance bands.
I get a decent amount of pain and discomfort during squat in my hip flexors especially when I first start, I always stretch them but never feel 100% ... is this from weak hip flexors or just need to be stretched out maybe foam rolled more ?
It may be related to your hip joint rather than the hip flexors. Have you done the couch stretch for your hip flexors?
Is tht where u get in like a Bulgarian split squat stance if so yes
I had the same issue. Started strengthening them and the pain has decreased considerably
@@brentloeb7947 look up knees over toes guy.
Most likely yes but you don't these overpriced capitalist toys. All you need is your bodyweight...lookup hip cars on UA-cam they work great to improve hip mobility. Also you can do stuff like sit on your butt with straight legs and do straight leg lifts and circles...which can also be done in the straddle/pancake position (fancy words for legs spread out to your sides). Good luck!
Is the hip flexion exercise good for tight hip flexors?
Most hip flexors are tight in part due to weakness. Obviously sitting all day doesn't help but strengthening can make much of the "tightness" go away. So yes!
Do you connect the weight to the monkey foot before you put your foot in, or put your foot in first and then connect the weight? Thanks!
You have to connect the weight first. It won't open once your foot is in the device. Good question!
If I have tight hip flexors from cycling which exercise will help here? I get pain in my left hip after a big ride. Definitely got some imbalances going on!
These are decent but I would recommend checking out some of my hip flexor content . Also, have you had a professional bike fitting?
Fix Your Hip Flexors - Strengthen and Stretch!
@@MovementProjectPT thank you! yeah I had a pro bike fit. It really started flaring up on the indoor trainer since I’ve been doing interval training as it’s pretty intense but I’ve had this issue for over 20 years from skateboarding and drumming.
@@Mixedbydavey Other thing to consider as a cyclist is that you may have a hip flexion deficit especially with your history. I see this very often in cyclists and they compensate by abducting the hip slightly to get around it which leads to soft tissue irritation. Treating the flexion deficit is the key. If you video yourself cycling from behind you will be able to see if that knee flares out to the side slightly.
@@MovementProjectPT I just video’d and my knees don’t flare 🤔
@@Mixedbydavey okay that’s a start. Likely good in the flexion. Try hammering away at the hip flexor work for a while and see how it goes. Incorporate abduction and hip circles also. Of course this is just loose advice and do you want to get checked by a professional if you continue to have difficulty
People complain about the price but they don’t realize the amount of time, money, and energy that go into actualizing a design.
Agree 100%. And this is a well designed piece of equipment. Very sturdy.
fully agreed nick. Sure will. Not quite as comfortable but it works
What would you recommend as a good substitute for Leg Extensions that could be done at home?
What is your main reason for wanting to do leg extensions?
@@MovementProjectPT thank you for your quick response. I want to isolate my quadriceps. I already do plenty of compound movements so I was looking for something I can do or something I can add to my home gym that wouldn't be so bad on my knees.
Single leg squat are where it’s at! As an alternative, you can do single leg sit to stands from different height chairs.
@@80Cujo resistance bands…anchor them low, sit on a chair, strap to ankles and raise legs.
Bulgarian split squats are excellent at working the quads! Prepare to be humbled as you’ll need to start with a pretty low weight or even just body weight until you get the movement down.
Can you use kettlebell or weight plates with monkeyfeet?
No plates, ketttlebell would depend on handle size and shape.
At $80 per not a pair is just way to high. Get an old yet solid leather belt double loop the the belt around a dumbbell and your set easily and secure
Thanks for the idea! I do like how securely the monkey foot holds the dumbbell. I'll have to try your technique since I have plenty of old belts!
Excellent idea I have old belts around here doing nothing lol cant afford to put out that kind of money for that ! Thanks so much for that 👍👍👍👍
Haha, I bought two of them. I guess it all depends on your priorities, this is crazy cheap for what it does
How exactly?
Kevin. Cheapskate idea. Yes. Just tie it on with bubblegum, like McGiver! 😂🎉 You sound like my Grandpa!
Theres nothing wrong with leg extensions/"sheer force", if it was such an issue we wouldn't deadlift. Hamstring curls, leg extensions, do them all! Lengthen that muscle and give a huge contraction
I agree leg extensions are fine. Deadlift doesn't produce the shearing forces that I am referencing. These are open chain and increased due to the position of the load being much further from the axis than a traditional leg extension.
@@yamahafx629 leg extensions on a machine are fine since you can change the force contact position. I don’t like them with monkeyfeet.
Thank you for explaining the possible knee strain therefore I'm no longer interested in the product. I heard you said leg extension isn't a good workout and I agree but what's the replacement ?
It's a great product, just not for leg extension. I recommend single leg squats or sit to stands as a replacement.
This is for hip flexors.
you can do reverse nordic curle with bands for quads.
But does it work on a powerblock?
You wouldn't be able to fit the foot part of the device around the handle of the power block. I suppose it could wrap around the outer cage but that wouldn't be safe or recommended.
You should tried it with some power blocks
Good call. I don’t have PBs but it would be interesting to see if they work
I think you need at least 5" or handle for it to fit...
My left hip is so tight its prone to flaring up after working out. Is this a safe way to go for me?
Tough to say without actually evaluating you. It is likely to help as most people benefit from strengthening the hip flexors. Be sure to get checked out if it doesn't improve
@@MovementProjectPT thank you!

Haha just a whoop and a wedding ring

Unfortunately no. This device is quite fixed at the ankle. It would strengthen and improve balance in the opposite ankle while you are working the hip of the other
@@MovementProjectPT wow you respond fast thanks for quick response
Can you attach the monkey feet so that the dumbbell is behind the knees?

I like to workout barefooted (because I workout at home). Do I need to wear shoes and socks with this? 🙂
Nice! I was just deadlifting yesterday barefoot and no shoe can compare. As for Monkeyfeet, yes, you can wear it barefoot. I do keep a sock on for comfort from the straps.
Why would you buy two?
You wouldn't. I don't know what I was saying lol
I just use ankle weights; I 'm good!
Nice! Ankle weights only go to about 10#
Can you just tell us the weight of the dumbbell instead of telling us the percentage of your body weight? (As if we know how much you weigh)
You don't need to know my body weight, you need to know your own :) That's why I said the percentage. I was using 10# for that demo and I weigh 185-190 depending on the day. Thanks!
Yikes, I just received my monkey feet (foot). Wished I saw this before I purchased. I bought it to strengthen quads and hip flexors S/P knee pain and end of 6 week PT session. It's like a snowboarding boot strap
Exactly
You don't even need these, you can use cheap figure 8 straps that you can attach to your feet.
Correct just make sure you have an elevated platform so you have a full range of motion
wouldnt velcro straps work just as well? relax the ankle, strap hold the weight - velcro can hold a lot of weight and its cheap as hell
I would guess so but you would need multiple pieces to keep it from shifting around.
@@MovementProjectPT theres a video of a guy using a regular leather belt to do it too - $10 vs $80 and doesnt seem any harder to put on
