Interestingly I’ve gone the other way - having owned an S1000XR since they first came out, I’ve moved to a 1300GS. Loved my XR, but the engine loved to rev and much of the enjoyment came at speeds beyond the legal limit. While the GS can be very quick, it doesn’t need to revved hard to be enjoyed.

"if you're not going to go off road why would you buy a GS?" It's a similar question that those who hate SUVs ask. In reality the GS is a terrible off road bike for all but the most capable riders. Both the GS and XR have always been road bikes - the GS prioritises comfort and two up ability and the XR prioritises performance. They're both great bikes, I look forward to buying a second hand one in 10 years!!

Yes good point and you could go a step further and say why have that instead of an s1000r? (apart from i suspect pillion comfort). I am not a good enough rider to exploit the difference in handling but personally i hate the beak thing. You could buy a decenf 2nd hand s1000 for 6-7k?

You can easily take the GS off-road in Europe and US as there’s many flattish dual-track and un-made roads to have a go at. Probably include Cumbria in that. For the average UK green lane I’d think there are more suitable bikes available.

On the subject of the GS never going off road & consequently the ridicule the GS rider sometimes gets? what about the the sports bike rider with race leathers & the hump backed jacket who never go on the track? The bottom line is you pay for what you like & like what you’ve got, everyone to their own. But I do like the new s1000XR. I test rode one a couple of years ago & the seat was a killer, looks like that’s been sorted out. Great review as always. Thanks.

Nice review Andy. I think your reviews esp when you discuss specs would benefit from info on service intervals and costs including valve checks. So many reviewers neglect this and I think it’s of interest to potential buyers. That said keep doing a brilliant job. Thanks

I’m going on 3 years of ownership and still love my XR. I sort of feel like this bike flies under the radar and is overlooked a bit because of the GS. More people should test ride the XR when considering a sport touring bike, it’s an amazing machine.

I have a 23S 1000 XR never really noticed excessive vibrations. You know you’re right the motorcycle it’s in line for that does rev pretty nicely, but nothing uncomfortable or bothersome on long rides. That in-line for is just amazing. Nothing beats an in-line for for sound and pure enjoyment of the ride is an amazing bike and all the bikes are owned. It’s my favorite.

    • @Lctrvl
      @Lctrvl 16 днів тому

I completely agree with your observation about in line 4s, and is the reason I bought one, and also have a Z900RS… Now, the original exhaust sound on this S1000XR does not do justice to the engine (thanks Euro 5!!!) so that’s an adjustment needed right away (check pro-race). For long trips, I also recommend changing the visor (check MRA). These small adjustments go a long way in making it an almost perfect bike (there will never be such a thing as a perfect bike 😂)

It's not just chain maintenance. Shaft drive removes the bother of rear wheel alignment, which I have found to be a pain in the chopper, on both belt and chain drive motorcycles. Shaft drive deletes all that misery, for a small loss of power through the drivetrain on a vehicle that already is blessed with an excess of power to weight.

Nice initial review Andy. I’ve got a 2022 XR and must be one of the few who doesn’t have a complaint about either the vibes or the seat. Came from an r1250r and it really put some excitement back in my biking. Not really much choice in this sector other than the Multistrada and the Suzuki GX so think I’ll be ordering another XR.

  • @rickdelmonte1682
    @rickdelmonte1682 16 днів тому +8

As someone who considered both bikes I can tell you why I ended up with the 1300GS:
-seat height. I have a 31” inseam and with the adaptive ride height and low seat get the GS down to an 800mm seat height. Considerably lower than the XR
-weight distribution. The weight on the XR is higher than on the GS, and pulling it off the side stand makes it feel heavier than the GS.
-vibrations. It’s still a vibey engine, certainly compared to the smoothness of the GS.
-power. I just don’t need more power than the 1300GS, and the extra 25hp are up high in a place where I seldom tend to go. I’ll take the torque.
-looks. Sorry, the GS is better looking to my eyes. The small front wheel with the tall bike looks awkward to me.
-having said all this is, if I was a sport rider looking for comfort, then the XR would be very appealing.
    Good review, thank you.

Rode one of these back to back with the gs in 2022. Overall ergonomics were vaguely similar but don't let the basic physical appearance fool you. The gs has a more relaxed riding position and feels less busy while riding. The additional horse power doesn't mean much to an old gent like me.

Nice bike and excellent review, as ever. I have to say though, I'm very happy with my 'GS for the road' - my '22 R1250RS. The fabulous shift-cam engine is plenty quick enough for me. She is relatively economical, as well as being all day comfortable two-up, and fully loaded. I don't see me going back to an inline 4, and definitely wouldn't swap the shaft drive for a chain.

I ride a MT09 SP and love the immediate pull when you twist the throttle. Something this bike lacks when I test rode it. You need to properly wind it up before you feel the full power and the theatre of noise which is superb. The GS has the benefit of the torque and having immediate usable power when you need it and also it’s shaft driven which is better for touring.

Chain drive, so not for me. I've had a few 4 cyl BMW as loan bikes whilst my own bike has been in for servicing and I just don't like the engine characteristics; they are too "busy" for me 5,000 RPM at 70 MPH? The continuous drone from the exhaust at similar speeds was quite tiring, the previous models were quite vibey too. Yes the power comes in with a whoosh at higher revs, probably great on track, but too frantic for me on the road.

I wouldn’t want to give up shaft drive, lower center of gravity, lower rpm’s at any given speed and boxer twin sound and charm. I also wouldn’t want more vibration and probable lower resale value compared to a GS. Of course, not everyone wants a boxer…

Great review as always! I had one of the first ones and sold it fairly quickly after my hand went numb after 50 miles and getting 38mpg !! not good for touring ,glad they seemed to have fixed the vibe thing ., A better choice than the 1300GS which I do NOT like the looks of . Like all BMW's now getting pricey so I've recently ,after 20 years of loyalty, gone away from the brand and gone Yamaha Tracer 9GT+. which I love ,I don't need 170 bhp . I know you love a triple! so could you try to get one to review please Andy, i would be interested in your view as it's changed quite a bit.

Give me a GSA with excellent fuel economy and range, shaft drive convenience, torquey power delivery and unobtrusive noise at motorway speeds any day of the week! I’m sure the XR is a great Sunday bike but I’m not convinced it would out trump a GSA on a tour of Europe?? 🤔

That very same bike is at my local dealership (and it has a twin on the floor), not very often two of the same. Have owned the 1200RT, 1200GS, and now the 1250R, truly thinking about a 1000XR or 1250GSA yes very different, but you made some serious good points. Thinking that since the beginning I have looked at getting an XR and always opted for something different thinking it is time to get the XR and see if that was what I was supposed to have purchased the entire time. Hmmmm

    This is an incredible machine.
Sad that it has to be ridden at 40mph and hardly sees 5k rpm.
On the highway I don’t see much more excitement.
Come to South Africa and get a chance to really fall in love with this bike…
    Thanks for a great channel!

Another great review. There is a lot to like about this bike. For me the GS would be the one I would pick. At 64 the lower center of gravity is a +. The other thing I look for in a touring bike is the range. Most of the riders I know on 1 liter sport touring bikes start looking for a gas station at 150 miles. Having a 200+ range gives more choices when planning my trips. I live in the Western US, and I have done trips where you need at least 200 miles of range. That being said I would love to see how the XR compares to the new Suzuki GSX-1000GX+. They both have a similar style with a more upright sitting position.

@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks for the reply. So is that enough reason to pay 2k USD. more for the BMW. There may be more to the BMW to justify the extra money. I hope to see the Suzuki in an upcoming video so we can learn more about it from a source that gives fair and honest reviews.

i rode the old model my arse after 20 miles was numb, i ride a 1250 gsa i was so glad to get back on it.
not to mention the lack of grunt at low rpms the xr felt gutless at low rpm you need to ring its neck to go fast.
ill stick with the 1250 .

I had the previous version top spec with ESA and it is a very under rated bike, I thought it was better than the Ducati and a fair bit cheeper. I got rid of it as I found it to quick and thought I'm going to loose my licence before long.

Great review as always, but as this is a sports tourer, it may have been helpful to include some commentary around practicality issues. Centrestand, luggage, pillion, under seat storage, tank range etc. can’t ever see myself spending upwards of £18k on a bike though.

What is the purpose of that x clamp on the handlebars, does it serve some function in addition to securing the bar to the frame? As oppsoed to the two singular clamps that the vast majority of bike have.

Plenty of warp 10 bikes out there today but darn few warp 10 riders out there. Honestly for street use only dialing the horsepower down to 100 to 110, with more midrange punch and fewer vibes and lowering the cost about 25% would be what I would call and improvement.

The biggest issue which you missed is servicing costs compared to the GS. Those 4 cylinder engines are ridiculously expensive to service and the reason I won't have another S1XR as a high mileage user as much as I love the performance.👍FB

The S1000XR in my mind the alternative to S1000RR or S1000R for those that like a more elevated or upright riding position.
I see the R1250RS as the sensible road choice for those who don't want the mass of a GS.
I used to raise an eyebrow at GS owners using bikes purely on road but looking at state of UK roads I can understand there are some benefits.

A tempting proposition, however, despite the £18k+ price tag, the front mudguard looks useless. As one who likes to keep their bikes looking tidy, it's disappointing that manufacturers seem unwilling to standard-fit an exhaust system that doesn't look like it's been in a canal.

I'll be posting a review soon of why i have gone full circle back to sport touring bikes and bought a Ninja 1000SX. I have tried ADV style Moto's of all shapes, sizes, brands for almost 10 years now, and as someone who rides on the track a lot, i just craved that "connected" feeling that fully faired sport tourers provide. The ADV style Moto's make me feel like a sail in the wind. Too upright... less connected. But thats just me ...
