The prosthetics and costume itself look pretty good, but showcasing how he's been directed to move (Seriously, the emphasis looks borderline flamboyant and contrasts horribly with his creepy design) And the lighting really don't do Gravis any favours.
I watched this great story earlier today, and I LOL'ed at the Gravis plunking his face first into the ground, and again into the TARDIS console like this! It's very undignified for such a powerful being, but such was the nature of Doctor Who back in these low-budget days.
I bought this DVD primarily because it's Region 1 release was going out of print, didn't really know anything about it beyond that it was considered "okay, nothing special". I've gotta say, I really enjoyed it. Atmospheric and tense, without getting as nihilistic as, say, Earthshock or Androzani (though Androzani is great in spite of that). One of the best Davison stories, though Mawdryn Undead remains my personal favorite due to the double dose of The Brig. Frontiers needs more love but oh well. Tractators gonna tractate.
Even though Tractors Gravis was able to rebuild the The Doctor's TARDIS,he didn't fix the chameleon circuit so that it can disguise itself wherever it goes.
it's not broken, it's a fault in the tardis that's been there since the beginning, so it's probably a design fault that happened during its construction.
@@frederickdietz3148incorrect. It was a fault with the actual mechanism itself. The type 40 series had to have a chameleon conversion to prevent the it from seizing up.
"Frontios" Decent tale but sad how many compromises were made to the original intended story - many colonists were dragged thru the ground ("Frontios buries its own dead") and the excavator was made from the grisly remains of the colonists (rem the arms/hands all sticking out polishing the cave walls smooth), hmm maybe a Dir cut CG DVD sometime? :-)
For those asking questions about this clip, I will give some background info. The T.A.R.D.I.S. lands on "Frontios", apparently against the will of "The Doctor". Nevertheless, he suggests that they go out and explore. The rocky surface of the planet is experiencing what the locals call "bombardments", presumably from a nearby enemy planet. "The Doctor," asks questions, gives some advice and then decides (uncharacteristically) that he and his crew should leave straight away. (He doesn't want to become "involved" as it might anger the "Timelords". ?) But on the way back to the T.A.R.D.I.S. there's another blitz attack, this one so violent that he, "Turlough" and "Tegan" all dive for cover. When it's over and the smoke (literally) clears the T.A.R.D.I.S. is gone and all that is left in its place is the hatstand. "The Doctor" reluctantly becomes embroiled in the mystery of "Frontios" and eventually finds out that solving it is the only way to get his ship back... in one piece.
J.N.T used to say to fans “the memory cheats”, when it was suggested older episodes of the show were better than those being made under his aegis. What he wasn’t considering was that the old episodes were being watched and circulated in fandom while he was at the helm, so there was in fact direct comparison as to how badly the show had fallen off the quality scale in the eyes of not just fans, but the viewing public. Watching this clip for the first time after it’s first broadcast, It’s safe to say, the memory does NOT cheat. It’s as bad now as I remember it.
What on Earth are the tractators supposed to be modeled after? When I first saw this, I thought they were walking upright snails, but his pinecone look at the end here says otherwise.
If they didn't give this doctor such an odd outfit and a celery stick, I think he would have been known to be one the best doctors, his acting was terrific, but the outfit ruins it.
"We can't go dragging around the universe with a dormant Gravis on the console." Been almost 30 years and I still love that line.
That would be hilarious though!
Doctor: I am the Doctor. These are my companions. And... this is Gravis...
Yeah its unintentionally funny, at least I dont think it was sposed to be funny
Easily my favourite Who line ever
Australian practicality.
Gravis' appearance is both terrifying and comical at the same time.
The man has spoken. It is truth.

Most classic doctor who villans are
Reminds me of Verruca Salt in Charlie and the Choclate factory slightly.
0:29 The Doctor: “I shouldn’t think it’s even within your powers to reassemble them”
Gravis: “You what Bruv?”
"Hold my Slugjuice Beer"
Gravis is the timeless child
*plot twist intensifies*
@@therajaofashbourne8483 you can tell it's canon from his Doctor-esque good looks, too!
Love the squeaky alien and the moment where the Doctor pushes Turlough down! So cute! Wish I could afford the DVDs.
I loved this console room
Moral of the story:
Don't mess with sexy!

1:49 Gravis doin' that funky Gravis dance.
i’ve always thought that 😂
He vibin'
“Drop him off on some uninhabited planet”
And from then on 50+ adventures of solo Fifth Doctor or just Fifth and Tegan.
I’m going meet Peter Davison on Saturday

"Frontiers" should be "Frontios". If I could turn autocorrect off I would.
Oh my god! Tractators gonna tractate!!! I'm using that!!
Me too. Although I can't think of many every day situations in which it will be applicable.
RassilonTDavros Frontios is madly unederrated
Peter's last season was very good , had other good serials like the Awakening and Planet of Fire .
Even though Tractors Gravis was able to rebuild the The Doctor's TARDIS,he didn't fix the chameleon circuit so that it can disguise itself wherever it goes.
I don't think it actually "rebuilt" the T.A.R.D.I.S. It was fragmented into the planet (I think) and the "Gravis" just pulled it all back together.
themirrorsofmymind by jove' he's got it !

I really liked Frontios. The tractators were a great design, shame the lighting and creature movement couldn't have been better, but this was the 80s.
Like, you can hear him squeak.
Everyone knows that's how you track a Gravis in the dark.
Like literally like, you know. Like literally. Like.
This is my favorite scene from Frontios
The Doctor uses greed of his enemy to trick him, old trick. ❤️

I like how the walls have stones and why do those people have the coat hanger? I REALLY WANT THIS DVD!!!!!!

Oh, hello mr Diggory, shouldn't you be cheering on your son at the TriWizard Tournament?
Brian Pern was brilliant as the Gravis.
I had no idea what you meant by this. Now I know...
I think Gravis is a good monster worth being brought back
I was hoping they made that guy in here a companion
Notes to Gravis actor for scene, just sway your arms from side to side while we shake the camera a bit, should be enough.

Why do you keep putting quotation marks around the proper nouns?
@stephen noonan Yes? What's your point?
@stephen noonan that's what you call an amusement? Am I meant to be impressed?
@stephen noonan I'm not lmao
And why did you delete your comments?
@stephen noonan alright I will quickly like my own comment so the likes will show as 2 to prove I didn't
Did someone show the Gravis a spirit level?

The serial doesn't have the best of endings, but I'm quite fond of it nevertheless. The first two episodes especially are great!
Sorta reminiscent of the 3rd Doctor serial "The Monster of Peladon" in terms of costuming.
@SideBurnProductions Yes, it is absolutely Jack Harkness. All the way back in 1984, before the character was created. ;)
I believe the spoof Doctor Who sketch in Ricky Gervais’s Extras was based on this clip.
" IT'S KILL OR CURE " I didn't realise the 5th Doctor mentioned Jodie Whitaker in this episode ha ha
You really gonna criticise s11 with that fucking thing stood there huh
its the doctors coat hanger
What the hell is that thing?! lol

A woodlouse
That is a star, not a planet.
Trac-taters 😮
TARDIS's Firewood collection @1:40 :P
SQUEEKY ALIEN IS SQUEEKY
One of the most silliest creatures on Dr who .
Eh, I still would put this over the Nimon. That hilarious lumbering walk with arms stretched out to either side is too much.
@@Jokie155 And then again there was Bertie Basset at one point.
Especially when you consider Turlough's reaction to them.
Never seen that before. Was Gravis supposed to be some sort of giant snail?
They were based on a woodlouse
@@kennethmacgregor-Gregorach oh ok. I will have to look that up, as I don't know what that is.😁

A giant grub in need of a TARDIS 😅 they were pathetic

i hope youre kidding

Well if you want to be pedantic.
Is this Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor?

Never liked frontios. "Tractators, I've seen them!"
