    I had already guessed what country you were going to. Glad to hear your Jeep and that all made it. When I shipped my jeep I had to pull the radio out going and on return trip. Unfortunately a RORO ship. I had to leave it at 1/4 tank of fuel or less. But fortunately it was close to 1/4 tank. On way out it was from E. St. Lewis IL. side then back to N. Carolina. My only choice if or when doing that again is in shipping container. The saltwater spray covered everything with a corrosive film.
    Best wishes for you and family.

    Having done this with the help of an agent in Cartagena, I think you glossed over how hard it can be to get that paperwork done in the destination country when you don't speak the language and are not part of their culture. I understand on a limited budget that your way is desirable, but I recommend one uses a quality agent like Overland Embassy when the budget constraints aren't tight.

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  4 місяці тому +2

      I did it myself in Cartegena. Yes, it took a bit of effort, but it was worth it for the money I saved.
      I paid $777 USD final price to ship from Colon to Cartengena. (though that was a while ago).
      You're right though, every port and destination and shipping deal around the world is different. Some are very easy, some not.

    A friendly tip till next time you strap a vehicle.
    Cross the straps: (from the right side of the vehicle to the left side of the container, and vice versa.)
    Also use the hooks on the straps direcktly to the strappoints to prevent the straps to chafe and break.
    I´ve been a sivilian supervisor for US Forces when strapping military equipment on ships.

    I have loaded hundreds of vehicles Into containers over the years and recommend using a 20 foot high cube loading the vehicle onto a skid which is on an angle so you drive onto it have the vehicle then strapped down to the skid and that then is lifted at the front by forklift and slide into the container, when unloading it is simple as using forklift and sliding the cradle back out unlash the vehicle and drive away.

    I'm always befuddled as to why there isn't a regular car ferry service between Iceland and Canada. Iceland is not really any further from Canada than it is from mainland Europe (the ferry typically is between Denmark and Iceland), yet there are car ferries to Iceland (mostly via the Faroe Islands I think). Most likely a car ferry service that would island hop between Iceland-Greenland-Canada would be the most logical route, I suppose it all comes down to customer demand. The geographical location also means that the Northern Atlantic ocean is not very friendly for much of the year, but neither is the North Sea for that matter. For me here in Japan, I would have loved to have driven my car across the Siberian Highway all the way to the family home in Wales and have the vehicle shipped back to Japan. Unfortunately, a little matter of a war in Ukraine and the consequent ostracisation of Russia from the rest of the world has prevented that from happening.

    I'm glad I'm not paying that price for diesel. I'm in Pt Hedland atm and just paid $1.90/litre AUD ( Perth is ranging from $1.60 to $1.80/litre AUD ). Your shipping price is real cheap. I looked into it about a yr ago to ship my ute from the east coast of Australia to North America. Price came in at $13,500AUD one way. Way too expensive for me. So I might have to look at buying a car in the USA then re-selling it when I leave. Similar to what u did when u came back here.

      That's crazy expensive, which isn't uncommon for most things in and out of Aus. I won't even bother checking what a 20ft high cube would be then (4x4 SWB Canter Camper) would be.

      I bought liability insurance for the EU, and that is all I needed.
