When a professional gilder removes the loose gold from a sized and gilded surface with a big soft mop brush, this is called 'skewing', and the loose fragments are called 'skewings', which are carefully collected in a neatly folded sheet of newspaper which looks very much like a pointed wizards hat! We do not let them blow away in the wind because they are essential for two purposes. Firstly, when the skewing process is finished, the fragments and the dust are used to fill the inevitable 'misses' in the sizing. Secondly, because over the course of a big job, such as gilding all of the mouldings decorating a grand hotel ballroom, for instance, you will amass a lot of spare skewings that you will keep and after the job is finished, sell on to a precious metals scrap merchant. On my last job I made £390 ($479) just from the excess skewings and dust that I had collected, which weighed just 9 grams but filled an entire litre bottle! Waste not, want not, you might say!
Theres no way these were actually 24 karat gold leafs. If you burnished them the edges would have melted together and leave no leftovet scraps. These leafs behave way more like imitation gold (brass) to me.
Anca Predesteanu yes, you wait the recommended time for the oil paints to dry then varnish over the top with a good quality finishing varnish. I’m about to varnish this painting now.
@@HarrietMuller did you varnish the gold leaf immediately after you were satisfied with it, then wait to varnish to rest of the painting once the oils were 100% dry?
CarolynS2311 I applied the gold size over the top of the gold leaf once I had finished and a year later I varnished the whole painting with archival varnish- I actually did this a few months ago 😊
Hi. Great video. But i have one question.. when we have to apply varnish to the painting!!?? Aftr the gold leaf is sealed or before applying the gold leaf??? Thanks!!
Thanks for the informative video! I am trying to gild gold leaf on to an oil painting but I cannot find the brand of gild you have! Do you think leaf will adhere to wet tacky paint? Or water-based gild is ok???
I used Japan Gold Size by Windsor and Newton to stick the gold leaf to the painting. I found it really good. I’ve never tried sticking it to wet paint but I have a feeling it may flake off after a while. The Japan gold size also acts a localised varnish over the gold leaf after it has fixed onto the painting.
When you say that you ensure the underpainting is thoroughly dried, do you mean a full year as with most oil paintings or just, let's say, a good week so that it's dry to the touch? great work btw, and very informative :)
Maurice Descurieux thank you for your comment 😊 I use a thin layer of very diluted yellow ocre as my underpainting si it doesn’t take too long to dry. I think I left this one to dry for a few weeks. Hope that helps :)
I don’t know how to contact , but to all viewers if anyone can or may reply , that how long do we have to wait for the goldleaf to stick before brushing them away. Because I’ve tried many times and every time something wrong happens.
For Windsor and Newton Gold Size I waited between 15-20 mins before sticking down the gold leaf. After burnishing it, you can then brush away the unwanted parts.
Why do YT uploads insist on ruining their instructions with inane music? it would be so much easier to follow without! Alone isn't it more difficult to control the gold leaf i the wind outside? Surely inside is better?
Mary K Forshagen yes you can but it appears translucent. If you want a more vivid effect I suggest you first use liquid gesso on top of the gold leaf, wait for it to dry then paint the area white using acrylic paint. Once you have done that paint on top in oils.

Oh wow! That’s really interesting- thank you so much for your comment! I really need to collect my skewings! 😄😄😄
@@HarrietMullercan you please tell us, which glue is best for applying gold leaf on dry oil paints on canvas?

I tend not to use speed drying mediums but if it’s fully dry then yes, you can definitely varnish.
@@HarrietMuller thnk you!!☺️
When everything is dried, do you varnish the whole painting?
rejectedzombie yes, I will do- for large oil paintings I usually wait a year to make sure the paint has thoroughly dried.

I did the gold leaf inside as seen on the video- only outside to paint on the gold size as ventilation is better and is toxic if you inhale a lot.
and then it started to rain
