Took a (civilian) position with a Sheriff’s office a few months ago & so far so good. Surprisingly decent mix of people our age & taking full advantage of the free gym during my breaks. Work for 8 years & I’ll be vested for my 2nd government pension. Total of 5 months from application to the interview & background investigation till my first day of work. Lovely people at the Sheriff’s & the deputies treat us just marvelously. We even get a free hot meal every night during the week. I’m so grateful to be working full time again after deciding to unretire.

Don't give up! At 59 I got a perm job in the DWP and am still working here. Lengthy application process I remember it well, go put on reserve list having gone through all the hoops etc. My first thought was that they thought I was to old however within a month got an email asking if I was interested in another role which would fit my previous exp and have never looked back. Feel very lucky to have got a job at 59. Just shows you what can happen.

I wish you well. I am 61, so a little older than you. I decided to stay retired after a fruitless job search a few years ago. I did apply for 'public sector' roles, but rather than be impressed by the great blue companies I had worked for, they seemed to discriminate against me because I had no public sector experience! I didn't ever think of trying HMRC, and it could be a very good idea. As I say I really hope it is successful. I am a bit rusty on all this now, but I would try and find out about their ways of doing things as part of the preparation for the interview. If you succeed, I may give HMRC a go, as my pension fund has been depleted by higher than expected inflation and lower than expected returns on my investments.

I've done a number of civil service job applications, the interesting thing is, your application gets a score 1 to 8 which you can view. 4 is the minimum to get an interview I was told.
When you apply, make sure you read the person specification, you'll need that to make your personal statement. This is where most of your score is made up from.

What I would say about the Public Sector in the UK is that the process is about as close as I think it's probably possible to get to removing bias in recruitment. I contract into the public sector and have on occasion applied for the odd permie role. BUT I've also regularly been asked to sit in on the interview/selection process too.
Firstly the information the selection team get is anonymised. No info on name/sex/age/anything else is given to selectors. Obviously if you go for an interview you will have to show up, but there every interviewee is asked exactly the same set of questions and responses are noted. Presentations are frequently asked for and these are stored too. The candidate selection process scores applicants according to a set of criteria agreed in advance.
Secondly all candidates, external and internal must go through the same process, no selecting of your protege simply because you know they are a good bloke.
The point here is that if a candidate thinks they were a victim of bias they can challenge the selection. So if that happens the organisation must be able to give chapter and verse on the way the successful candidate was selected. The selection panel has to hand in their notes for storage too. They have to have a documented audit trail. Yes it's bureaucratic but it does seem to work IMO after watching multiple appointments made in the NHS over the last decade or so.
If you don't get the job it won't be because you are too old. I speak as someone who just missed out on a senior (board level) role in the NHS only last week. At 65! The process is the same for all bands of jobs.

The contracting market is broken in financial services rates down by at least 25% because too many people are chasing too few jobs. It feels like a recession to me even after the GFC in 2008 this is the worst I have seen. Government is probably the way forward you never know there could be more contracting opportunities their which last more than 6 months.

I was late with a tax payment ... (HMRC's software is very flaky) and they referred my tax obligation to a private debt collector. I couldn't believe it. I went from owing the government for having the audacity to earn money, to owning a private company that employs thugs to kick down your door. What exactly do tax collectors do if they don't collect tax? The idea HMRC doesn't do its own collections and instead turns your debt over to some mates for private profit is absolutely disgusting. I have no idea how that can be legal.

I just love how people get sold on the pay differential between public and private. There is none. Average civil service salary is around 35k same as the private sector but when you throw in the pension and benefits plus adherence to contract hours the public sector wins. Avoid the private sector is my advise for average Joe Public. Have a decent work life balance, no stress, great leave, work from home and an outstanding pension when you retire. Plus stop believing what the media and unions tell you.

re: Oliver Cromwell - the impact of Cromwell’s actions in Ireland was devastating. His campaign left thousands of Irish civilians dead, and his policies led to mass dispossession of land. Many Irish were forced into exile, while others were sold into indentured servitude in the West Indies. His actions left a lasting legacy of bitterness in Ireland, and he is still remembered as a figure of hatred in Irish history.

D.E.I (“Diversity , Equity , Inclusion”) is now in full swing here in the U.K . I recently went for an interview with B & M for a job I was more than qualified for . As soon as I walked in and saw all the hijabs and dark skin of the fellow interviewees my heart sank . On leaving I was told that if I was successful I’d receive a phone call by the following Friday . Needless to say , no call came . Last week on perusing the local news website , I saw an article on the new stores opening day with an accompanying photo . If it wasn’t for two white faces , you’d think the new store was in Karachi . This is how the globalists are going to finally finish us off , by legally denying us employment . No job , no home , no family . Gen0cide by any other name .

@bob As a ‘dark skinned’ person myself, many times I was looked over for jobs and promotion especially in the 80s and 90s for no other reason I’m sure than how I looked. I didn’t complain though I still went to uni started at the bottom and accepted I’d just have to work twice as hard as my white peers. So I did and by 51 reached my goal of promotion as head of IT within a blue chip. So I find it amusing that white people who are generally always the first choice (if they have the qualifications) moan about diversity. Sorry but it’s not diversity it’s you if you’re not getting the jobs 🤷🏻‍♀️

Get rid of that horrible stubble for goodness sake! 😈 Four months out of work isn't that much. I was out of work for two years in the early '90s. Fortunately I was still living with my parents at the time. The main 'professional' grade in the Civil Service is grade 7 - that is equivalent to a middle manager level role. Salaries are quite a bit lower than the private sector, but instead of getting a paltry money purchase pension where the employer puts in 6-8%, in the Civil Service you get a defined benefit pension based on your career average salary, meaning that the for every year of employment you get 2.3% of salary as an 'earned' pension that will pay when you are at state retirement age. This is excellent if you join in mid-career, say aged 40, but at 55 you will not have enough time to earn a big pension unless you intend to work until state retirement age. Also, no annual bonuses are paid in the Civil Service, though you might get one if you are an exceptional performer.
