I love how realistically Sabaa Tahir writes Laia. I'm so tired of female teenage protagonists who are naturally brave and badass when they encounter their first challenge, when your average teenage girl who wants a peaceful life would be so intimidated by the hard knocks that Laia gets. Found her super refreshing as a character
I totally agree with you about Laia! So many people trash her for being weak but to me she is the strongest and most relatable female character I've ever read about. She is so so strong in face of adversary and she grows so much over the course of the book and I love that about her. Also yesss the festival scene is also one of my favs
I love how you mentioned the strength that Laia has throughout the series. I feel like most of the time "strong" female characters are written to be more like Helene, a female that knows how to fight physically and is more assertive because apparently that's all it takes to be strong. But Laia never lets her fear control her and continues to overcome the obstacles she faces no matter what, but she doesn't have a fancy sword so I guess it doesn't count.
I so agree with you on Laia she was such a strong character and being faced with the Commandant she's my girl! Also Helene grew on me in the sequel! Hopefully I'll re-read it soon!
Hannah, you should totally do a full-on review on the series. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts, especially on Helene. I...here's the funny thing. First book, through most of it, I HATED this girl so much. I hated how narrow-minded she was and how she didn't get how wrong things were. However at the end, I grew to...not quite hate her because of how devoted she is to Elias. She's his ride-or-die, as difficult as it. Then in my second book, you see her trying to struggle being the second-hand to that psycho-path, trying to make her way through that bitch of a leader, and struggling with her feelings for Elias....and this poor girl got put through the ringer, so somehow she became a child to me. I think one of the reasons why I grew to like her is because she really is a tough position. She was the only female in her class. She's in a predominately male environment where she is easily undermined. She has to watch everything she does or says because a mistake can be used against her. You can't help but feel for her. As for Laia, I love her. I really do and I do agree with you. She is a different sort of heroine, one who develops her skills instead of just being born with them. My one issue is she made so many mistakes in the second book and so many things that made me wanna slap sense into her. However I definitely don't think she's weak. Going through what she did and somehow still making it out says volumes on the kind of woman she is. I have been debating since May on whether or not I should reread the books, especially since I have a massive TBR which I wanna cut down this summer. However after seeing your vlog and hearing you rave about the books, it's making me consider it. And please. Feel free to do more vlogs about your favorite books. Even a redo of your favorite series. I'd love that
Who on earth would say that Leia is weak?? She's one of the strongest characters out there! Yeah, she doesn't do much, but that's what she's supposed to do as a "slave" - try to NOT stand out and NOT do anything that would be suspicious. Being opressed and abused and see others who are treated the same way and not being able to do anything about is one of the hardest things. Also, she's super anxious (who wouldn't be) and yet she still does this to save her brother.
I just finished An Ember in the Ashes last night (first time reading the series!) and i feel the same way for Helene! Ugh, she bothered me so much!!!!! i can’t wait to pick up A Torch Against the Night today when I’m off work ❤️ this series is amazing!
Just read ember and the ashes and I could not put it down. I was sort of in a reading slump and finding this absolute jewel .. chefs kissss. I have never fallen in love with a character so quick .
Thank God you posted this. These are my favorite videos from you to watch when I’m feeling kind of down. Thank you, Hannah ❤️ Edit: ok, I’m not even deceiving myself. These are my favorite videos from you to watch anytime.
I discover your channel a week ago and since then you just motivate me to read more. You describe books so beautifully and have such a good taste. Your videos are addictive so thank you for making them ❤️
“Benson and Stabler fan-fiction” is something I didn’t know I needed until now ! I’ve also watched all the episodes in random order but then I started at the beginning and watched them all again x
now i really wanna read an ember in the ashes. i did have it but i wasn’t in the mood to read it anytime soon and i didn’t think i would like it. but now i think i’ll really enjoy it
I just finished my re-read on Thursday and I also rediscovered my love for it. The only bad thing is now I have to wait for the third book!! Thankfully my wonderful library already has it on order and I have the first hold.
I finally started reading book one of this series and I'm loving it so far. Pretty much flying through. You've been saying how great it is and it's been on my shelf. Don't know why I've been holding off?!
I hate Helene too lmao. Sorry, but being complicit in slavery is a big deal-breaker...... call me crazy Also I love how your annotations are gushing about Elias and highlighting all the times Helene is horrible lol
I thought I was the only one who didn’t like Helene!!! Everything you said is on point!!!! Thank you for just reading what has been in my mind for so long and coherently forming it into words!
Ok now I definitely need to read this series. It's funny how nearly every booktuber I watch seems to be in a rereading mood right now haha, I want to do it too ! It's always hard for me to even think about rereading when there are so many awesome new releases but I really want to try to reread some of my favourite books this year (especially the Mistborn trilogy and The Name of the Wind !)
Oh my gosh! Yes! I've only read the first book, but as soon as you said Keenan annoyed you and I screamed with joy. He just didn't grow on me. I kind of felt bad for him, but I still don't like him. I need to re-read the first book and get to the second before the third one comes out
The views of the food and beach were perfect! I really enjoyed your vlog Hannah! Also, your sister is so pretty, and I hope she makes appearances in future vlogs.
which series should i read shadow and bone or ember of ashes? btw i love fantasy and romance !

This makes me want to read this series so bad! I read An Ember in the Ashes a while ago and loved it, but for some reason, I never got around to reading A Torch Against the Night. I think it's time for a reread! 😉
I just ordered this series in that paperback edition and was curious if it's one if these floppy paperbacks that you can open widely without the spine breaking?
AEITA is also my favourite series ever (beside ACOTAR series and TRB series 😂)!!! And Elias is my 2nd fictional boyfriend (the first one being Rhysand 😂). And have anyone told you how perfect and beautiful your eyebrows are? 😍😍 they are so freaking gorgeous 😍 im so jealous 💞
I am so super excited for a reaper at the gate to come out!!!!! I just read the first two books last month and this month I finished it. Oh my, that ending just wowed me!!!!! I know reaper is going to kill me, especially because of Elias!!!!! My favorite character by the way... Love watching your blog for both the books!!!!!!
I love this series and I love your reading vlogs I am a huge fan of avatar the last Airbender and I definitely have to say that the Ember in the Ashes seriously reminds me of The boiling rock episode
I have a feeling that in the third book, Helene will have complete character development. As much as I do love Helene, she’s a very flawed character and thinking slavery is okay isn’t justifiable at all. But in her core, she has the potential to learn, change and understand that Scholars aren’t beneath her.
Zeinab Taha I hope you're right about Helena because right now I can't stand her. And I feel she's going to have to really do something amazing to make me start to like her!!!!!!
The Ember series is one of my all time favorite series too! I bought it out of recommendation and I’m glad I took my friend’s word for it. The series is really gold and doesn’t disappoint. In regards to Helene, I disliked her character a lot in AEITA. But after ATATN, I felt so much for her. I love how her character contrasts to the main leads, considering she lived a full, privileged Illustrian life compared to Elias and Laia. I think Helene has the potential for more character development and with Reaper at the Gates coming out, I’m excited to know what the series has in store for her.
Hey! First of all i loove your videos so much, they are always really pleasant to watch and interesting especially your reviews and unpopular opinions but yeah can you please do a Night Circus reread vlog that’d be amazing! 😊💜💜
I’m currently reading torch and lemme tell you I’ve never been so anxious reading this book omggggggg Can’t wait for reaper at the gates Also I have the same sweatshirt only it’s hufflepuff so that’s pretty neat ^-^
I'm currently reading A Torch Against The Night and I've been putting it off not because it was bad or I'm not enjoying it...it's because when I finish it, I wanna have the third book now 😂
I dont think it's boring when you read I'm reading I'm reading and when your talking I'm listening. It's 2019 and i have a huge goal. I want to read 1000 books this year
I am thinking of purchasing this series at some point (my mother literally never lets me buy books lol she says I have too many but that's not true anyway) do you know if the really pretty version that's black and a golden cover is available anywhere because I fell in love with it in one of your vids? I can't wait to buy it and read it when I have some money saved up! Love ya as a booktuber and glad to be apart of the BookTuber following :)
This is kind of making me sad because I couldn't get into An Ember in the Ashes. I started reading because of your love of the book. I might give it another try eventually but not any time soon.
i LOVE you for saying those things about Helene and Laia!!! I completely agree. All this hyped about Helene and other "strong" female characters is really frustrate me. I believe that book characters must be inspairing but that does not mean only way to do it is making them physically strong and thats it. Laia has been through so much things and still remain loyal to her brother and did not give up. I love her for that and thank you so much for saying those things.
I love this video!! You should really make it into a series where you vlog when you reread your favourite books. But only if you want to, of course, either way, we'll support your choice. Anyway, keep up the good work!!
I love how realistically Sabaa Tahir writes Laia. I'm so tired of female teenage protagonists who are naturally brave and badass when they encounter their first challenge, when your average teenage girl who wants a peaceful life would be so intimidated by the hard knocks that Laia gets. Yes Laia is so relatable.
Please do more of this kind of reading vlog. You don’t have to make like a 24 hour or weekly vlog. As long as you are enjoying!
