Excellent video and another great update for the AE-30. 👍 I'm sure I'm not the only person hoping someone figures out how to bypass the Fantom ...or Roland magnanimously enabling common multisample formats so that people can create their own sample packs on the Roland SP-404 or Akai MPC or import their favourite computer multisamples. A good point you make about sampling saxophones. For me the joy of sampling is creating imaginative sounds. I built a whole song around samples sliced from a recording of me using an electric snow blower to clear my driveway!
Just like the iPhone etc. a lot more than the average player would ever need but on saying that I would imagine that you would take whatever you want/need to suit your requirements. Great work Alistair, thank you.
Thank you for another great video. These are well done and much appreciated. I am very impressed with the intelligent harmony and would very much like to have it on my AE-20. I am very disappointed that this is not being offered on the AE-20, which I own and love. I would love to share in the excitement of this new update, which is fantastic, but Roland appears to have excluded those of us who own the AE-20. Unfortunately, I sense a trend. It appears that Roland will continue to add new and exciting features to the 30, and allow the 20 to gradually become outdated. I hope that this is not the case. Are there plans to share this update with the 20? I understand the need to continue to support the flagship model to stimulate sales, but will feel somewhat cheated if the 20 is neglected. I do appreciate the new version 1.2 for the 20, but it pales in comparison to the 30 update.
I agree, it’s a shame and I see no reason why the AE-20 should not get intelligent harmony. I understand why it can’t get the sample import, that requires different hardware. However, perhaps from an AE-30 perspective, they might have been disappointed that the AE-20 was really close to the AE-30 and costs less. Having spent the extra money they are now enjoying those extra benefits of the flagship model, which makes sense. I’m sure Roland will keep supporting the AE-20. Remember that’s newer hardware than the 30 so they won’t forget it. This update certainly seems to further differentiate the models.
I've ordered my ae20 yesterday. I agree with Alistair and hope that the feature will come for the Ae20 too. A compromise would be if the AE20 supported only chords with up to 4 chord tones (including the note which is played). Due to the fact that the Ae 30 currently supports intelligent harmony with up to 5 chord tones, this would still somewhat set them apart.
Thanks for sharing! Microtonal scale tuning is a huge improvement for eastern music players 🙂(If I was nitpicking I would say that some oriental scales exceed the octave...)
Hi Alistair, I just subscribed to your UA-cam channel. I am thinking of buying a Roland Aerophone Pro AE 30 but I am worried that it may not be effective at controlling my external Hardware synth via Midi. I have a Behringer DeepMind 12 hardware synth. I'm worried about Latency and mis triggering notes using the AE30 as a Midi Controller for this purpose. Also, I want to record the AE30 directly to my Zoom R4 MultiTrak Recorder using its Line In Inputs. Does the Roland AE30 have a Line Output socket that would enable me to do this? Thanking you in advance for your advice. Regards, John Scarratt.
Hi. Yes the Aerophone has a line out so no problem there. As far a latency over midi there should be be no problem. It will be just like any other midi controller. In terms of miss triggers that will be largely down to how well you play the instrument. I play external synths all the time with no issues besides my own inadequacies. 😊
Thank you so much for your prompt response. On that basis, I will proceed with buying an AE30. Then I'll start watching your tutorials on this instrument. Regards, John
Hi Alistair, your Aerophone videos are great! Just going to update my ae30. Do you know if there is a way you can microtune on V3 and link them with conventional saxophone quarter tone fingerings? Hope all's well with you.
Hey Carl. Flattered that you would watch my videos and pleased you have an Aerophone. As for your question, not as far as I can work out. You can only use up to 12 semitone steps per tone (as in sound). So you’d be limited. However you do give me an idea that a scene could be made with two tones that would sit in different octaves but play at the same pitch. So a kind of split scene. The second tone could be then altered with the scale turning. You’d then play the quarter tone by playing a different octave key. The same could be done using the motion sensor or a foot pedal to switch to the quarter tone. Not a great solution but feasible. This is all thinking aloud but if you’d like to chat further give me a shout. All the best.
@@isax.academy what a great idea. I guess I'd lose an octave or two of range. I've been messing with using the aerophone with max MSP and also with Kontakt. I wish there was a way to easily program fingerings and then upload/dump fingerings easily. Would you mind if I picked your brains via email? Thanks so much for getting back...
@Carl Raven. You set me off on this. Something to try. On the Aerophone menu go to key function and (in my case) select tc. Set it to off. On the app select your sound (with one tone for now) and go to internal. Scroll to Tc and set it to bend down. Press value around 30 Curve 5 Now on any note you play, the side c key will lower the pitch by around a 1/4 tone. Again not ideal but it works.
This particular update is for the AE-30 only. That does not mean that these features will never be available for the AE-20. If and when Roland creates an update for the AE-20 it should be posted in the AE-20 Support section on the Roland web site.
Thanks for another great video Alistair! Your videos going back to the early EWI videos have been hugely helpful and informative. I am wondering if you or someone else in the community could helpl me figure out how to have my Aerophone Pro send aftertouch data to my Korg iM1 app on my iPad Pro. I have watched your soft synth video and I have everything working great with Thor, Moog and the rest of my softsysnths just can't get the aftertouch for the Korg iM1 figured out! I was able to make this work with my EWI 4000s for years...just can't get the AE-30 to communicate with this app!
Thank you Alistair. Nice possibility, about the intelligent harmony type, but it seems a little complicate..! A question: the new upgrade of the Roland Pro Editor consent the use of Intelligent Harmony with the old version of Aerophone Pro Ae 30 (the first..)?
So sorry. I don’t quite understand your question. The Aerophone Pro app has also been updated to allow the new features. All AE-30 models versions can updated to V3.
Hi Alistair I downloaded version 3 to my Pro, and oh no, I didn't like the new sax sounds. It also removed one of my favourites, which was the tenor sax growl. I also preferred the ild tenor 1. Can I get them back. HELP!!
I’ve never tried to step backwards in firmware. I’ll try to see if it’s possible. I’m pretty sure you can recreate the tenor growl sound with a little editing. As far as I understand the changes to the sax sounds were only in the speed of the attack. Maybe you could work with the new versions to get used to those very small changes? To be honest I don’t use the sax sounds so I’ve not noticed the changes significantly.
Hi Alistair, thank you for your video. I just updated my AE-20 to v1.20. However, there seems to be a firmware change (bug?) in the System Transpose setting. With v1.11, when I set S1 and S2 to system transpose UP and DOWN and Transpose Mode is System, using S1/S2 to set the key, the key will not change even if I change scene, but not with this latest v1.20. Only rotary button will keep the same key even scene change. This creates problem because I cannot keep the same key when I change scene during playing using S1/S2 for quick key change. I am not able to find Roland Support Request Form. Is your AE-20 having the same after updating?
Forgive me. I don’t quite understand this. Are there some typos? I wonder if the update changed some settings that you need to check? Did you do a reset after the update?
@@isax.academy Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did reset after update. What I mean is I used to use S1 and S2 to set key for a song, when "Transpose Mode" is "System", this key will not change even if I change to different scene. But not after latest update.
I have a question for anyone, is there a way to add and /or Delete a single tone in the user section or do I have to download the entire pack if I am getting them from the cloud. Like for example can I just add the va simple saw from the Essential saw pack on the Roland cloud?
Hi. Just be careful with terminology here. A scene can be made of up to 4 tones. If you mean can you import a single scene, yes that’s possible with the USB import option. There’s also an option to import a single tone. Just follow the onscreen instructions carefully.

I think there may be different UA-cam options available based on the platform and/or device you are trying to display the UA-cam video on not to mention that there may be different options if you are accessing UA-cam via the web site. One possible approach is to turn on Close Captioning(CC). Usually that presents an option to display CC in the native language. There may be an Auto Translate option available that hopefully will allow you to select your native language.
Great video you explain everything so well Roland are very lucky to have you as are we in Isax 🙏
Thank you, Alistair, for yet another amazingly thoughtful, insightful, and informative video.

Great video especially the sampling bit. Hopefully Roland will produce another soudfont to svz converter that works with the Aerophone!
