It's interesting how the ships and classes are named - and my ears pricked up at the name Ticonderoga! The Ticonderoga was a US-owned clipper built and launched in Boston, and was legendary for her speed and beautiful lines. But she sailed into infamy in 1852 when she left Birkenhead in England bound for Melbourne, Australia with 800 emigrants and crew - mostly from Scotland, some from England, and a handful from Ireland. The decks were crammed to overloaded with passengers, all hoping to find a better life in Australia, which would have made for an incredibly difficult and long voyage under the best of conditions. But during the outward journey Typhus broke out - and spread like wildfire, with the first child being buried at sea just 8 days out of Port. No one knew at the time that Typhus was spread by the bites of infected body lice - and this wouldn't be known for at least another 30 years .. so it spread and the passengers died like flies. It was said that sharks followed her, just waiting for corpses after the usual weighted canvas shrouds had run out. Whole families perished, and they were forced to conduct burials at sea at night so the grieving families did not have to witness the carnage. By the time the Ticonderoga reached Melbourne more than 100 passengers had lost their lives, and 70 more would perish in the weeks after arrival at Port Phillip where the great ship was quarantined on a lonely stretch of beach at Point Nepean.. There's a memorial there to the memories of those who died. I only know about the fate of the Ticonderoga because my great-great grandparents, Alexander and Nora Cameron, were on that ship - and by some miracle they survived and went on to make their fortunes in the lucky country. After the Ticonderoga was permitted to leave port I believe her Captain sailed her to the Far East and then back to the USA, where she was sold several times. No known photographs of her survive.
