I agree. As I commented just a bit before, this is why allies matter. As a US Navy veteran I recognize technologies here pioneered by us and the Brits, but some I think are unique to this vessel that all of us can benefit from. The USA's best motorized artillery weapon is licensed from Norway. I can't think of an example off hand, but I'll bet our military has benefited a lot from Germany too.

Not forgetting that on military level, France is the only European country largely independent of its allies in terms of military equipment and its equipment is quite remarkable. As we say at home, Nécessité fait loi. A tight military budget which led to a pragmatic policy of building multirole equipment, see the Rafale. We learned the lessons of WWII. Si vis pacem para bellum.

    • @yazhogvableau5607

@@swann67000 First of all I specify that I am French too. You compare incomparable things, the USA is a little less than 15 times larger than France with a population 5 to 6 times larger, a MUCH larger economy than France. It is sure compared to the USA, France has a rather mediocre army. Only compared to many countries the majority of our military industry is "autonomous" and our technology is "equal" to that of the USA. I take the Rafale as an example, it is equivalent to the American F-22, moreover the Americans no longer show the F-22 internationally when it is against the burst because the only training having been done between the 2, the Rafale won. The American pilots clearly said that they were impressed by the quality of the Rafale. We are currently the only country with the United States to have a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, for example. Our Caesar guns are some of the most accurate artillery guns in the world. The MAMBA with the Italians and one of the best anti-aircraft systems (From what I've heard it's even better than the American PATRIOT, but I'm not sure about that). As for ammunition, several Nexter factories have just reopened to provide us with a larger stock.
We must not underestimate our capacities either, yes we have an army with very few soldiers, but in France patriotism has almost disappeared unlike the United States. There people proudly display themselves with their flags while in France they treat you as a fascist if you do. We must not forget that military capabilities are linked to politics and the economy... The less people will love their countries, the less they will join the army. But unlike some of our neighbors who are reducing their army (United Kingdom among others) France is expanding it.

France has the second largest maritime territory in the world (10 millions square kilometers) right after the US (11 millions square kilometers) and before Australia (9 millions square kilomters), this is why the French Navy is made a priority by France to stay the largest and strongest from european countries to be able to protect that territory, with parts of it all over the world, in every ocean. Huge task for such a small country compared to giants such as the US, China, Russia, India, and this is why french engineering is of the finest. Quality has to prevail over quantity, no choice.

As a frenchman i'll tell you something.
Metropolitan French politics folks don't really care about french peoples living on french islands thousands kilometers of France, they only care about theses island for the ressources their maritime territories hold and touristic incomes, worst thing is that they even often makes funs of peoples coming from theses islands and maintain them in poverty and sometime under a terrible condition (one recent example is mayotte, gov trying to ignore peoples don't have access to fresh water !). They still behave like there is a smell of colonial era.
So yeah, french navies exists to protect theses territories (not much their peoples) and are used as refuelling spots for allies or french power projection.
An old example of what theses islands can be is Haiti, it was also a french island before, and they were given their liberty in exchange of a huge debt they are still paying back nowandays to France, maintaining them in extreme poverty. I see that as a warning for other islands.

@@dev-mc4jq this documentary literally shows how France used its capabilities to help st-Martin rebuild after a hurricane. Such is one of many advantages to being part of France. Mayotte’s biggest problem is illegal immigration from neighbouring Comorians who flee to Mayotte for a better life. All overseas territories today are free to leave through democratic process. St-Domingue/Haiti was a different era and the island was taken from France by force.

Great documentary, which covers so many interesting parts in detail, the ship sounds amazing with a lot of capabilities that it can cover. Surely not a ship for every country/navy, but very interesting. The Netherlands share the Karel Doorman with Germany and the ship seems to cover some of the features of the Thunder Boat, we (Germany) don't have anything close to it, but we do have a very different approach to missions abroad than the French mind you. Anyway, so much thought went into the design of this ship and experience, seems like a fantastic versatile ship. French navy can be proud of it. Thanks for the very interesting look behind the scenes, I always wondered about these ships and this documentary gives soo much more insight than your regular wiki entries of course.

OK let me correct a major mistake here. Its not "the thunder boat". The ship is called TONNERRE which means "Thunder" in French. TONNERRE is part of the MISTRAL class. MISTRAL is the lead ship, TONNERRE is her sister ship as is DIXMUDE. There are two other MISTRAL class ships that were originally to be sold to Russia but after Russia invasion of Crimea the sale was cancelled (as punishment) and sold to EGYPT instead. These ships are called ABDEL NASSER and ANWAR SADAT.
There is also a smaller version available for export called the "MISTRAL 140" for countries with smaller budgets, although there are as of yet no orders.

As a French it is nice to see positive post about this multirole design and how France can still cope with few money to keep an acceptable military capability in diverse fields (Howitzer, Navy, Aircraft) . However the truth is we were urged to do our best with fewer budget each year which explains such "swiss knife" design is not reallly a choice but mandatory...
Keeping a fully autonomous military capabilities (including own Nuclear weapons not to depend on US decision in case our Nation existence could be jeopardized ) while other European countries were still 100% counting on the US nuke umbrella led to a decline of our economical performances while others could invest in other fields all the money they did not have to invest in the army. This has created an economical competitive advantage within EU and unfair competition which partially explain German economically overperformance for decades (partially...) and finally led to anti European feelings among some workers in declining economical sectors... As a consequence it has been like a viscious circle ... fewer money ... have to struggle to keep military performance anyway ... fewer money available then... struggling more to keep a decent army ... etc... etc... . and a viscious circle decreasing trust in real European partnerships in the same time...
It is a pity European nations did not decide to have same position as for civil aircraft with Airbus balancing Boeing and sometimes beating it in some aspects ... European partnerships in the military are never successful and countries always choose US equipment instead... We had some decades to be ready and able to protect ourselves against a threat for our civilization and values as we are facing right now from diverse parts of the world ...
With proper European leaders which could have been a decent European capable force beside US ("beside" and not as vassal) but we have wasted this opportunity.
This would have been in the US advantage too to let its main partner becoming stronger and reach a more balanced role in the Western partnership. However, as often, the US prefer friendly countries acting like vassals rather like real partners because they think keeping a dependance link is more trustable for them...I think it's a strategic mistake. They made sure by several means (example available on demand) its partner does not become too strong and too independant capable while claiming in the same time he should invest more in its own defense capabilities...
Now I wonder how countries like Baltics would react if someday more and more US leaders get closer to Trump line and agree to shift from "America first" line to "America only"... (It would be by the way also a bad move from the US since current events show how much the US, alone, is struggling to cope with anti Western democratic model forces from diverse parts of the world...)

    improving the Thunder Boat
I have a suggestion. When the catamran is going in the belly of the mothership, a mistake maybe disasterous BUT YOU CAN AVOID IT BY fixing large rubber ball berrings that rolls on the side of the Mother ship Belly. That way catamran can hit both side of the belly of the mothership and you will be alright.

Whilst watching this my neck veins started popping out as I thought about David Cameron selling our HMS Ocean, she was very similar to this and now we've lost a large helicopter carrier which could take Wildcat, Apache, Merlin, Chinook helicopters or about 15 Harriers so she was a decent ship. She could also carry 830 troops, 250 crew plus the aircrew and maintenance crews as well...... she was chuffing awesome!!

Never mind, we have two of the most modern aircraft carriers in the world that are twice the size of the French Navy's Charles De Gaulle (which is then itself bigger than this amphibious heli carrier).
Its a good ship but nothing new. The UK used to have them, the US Marines have some and this ship is in fact smaller than the Australian Navy's flagship of the same type.
