When I was a kid, I wanted to live in Ireland or Greece - now I am glad I don't. Not because I am proud, or happy about what is going on, but sane people are needed here. I risked my life for this nation more than once in the Navy and do not regret it. But I will be damned if I see these assholes ruin the nation I risked my life for. So as much as I would love to be elsewhere, here is where I will stay. Neither the USA, nor the rest of the world is safe with this half wit (possibly half orangutan) in the White House controlling the most powerful military in history.

In order to be a good human being you have to take responsibility for your actions. Obviously he has never had to do that. Failed business's, bad investment's none of which were his fault of course. It's clear to me that is why he lacks empathy. Rich guy syndrome!

Not necessarily. As cited above, it _did_ spur growth. If we raised taxes back to their previous level after increasing growth, it's possible that we could have recovered our loss and then some. The problem, of course, is that we didn't do that because Republicans are anti-taxes (as per the Norquist Pledge) but not necessarily anti-spending or anti-deficit, living like Americans who think they can just keep maxing out new credit cards to pay old balances. And that's why Trump can't make money this way, even if it does create growth -- Republicans will never have the guts to do what it takes to capitalize on that growth and make back their losses.

If so then your faith in the human capacity to orchestrate society is far beyond reality.

David's main point is that if you give tax cuts to the wealthy they will sock it away in savings. They are more likely to put it in the stock market or into real estate neither of which are healthy for the economy as a whole. It creates bubbles which eventually burst and require bailouts which just generates further debt. Even if the wealthy spend their tax cuts on consumer goods it doesn't grow the economy- they buy luxury goods from abroad. It better serves the economy to increase the minimum wage. There is a greater opportunity for wealth creation if goods are being created for domestic markets.

The super high top tax bracket was to encourage rich people to put their excess capital to work by investing it in businesses. They get rewarded for doing this by the capital gains tax being much lower. Chipping away at that top tax bracket discourages investment.

Reagan's tax cuts and increased defense spending kept the inflation for which Jimmy Carter was derided going throughout the 1980s. This caused American goods to be overpriced in the world market and created a demand for imported, especially Japanese, products. This then caused American manufacturing to suffer which created the Rust Belt, a term never heard before the Reagan presidency.

Since "economic multiplier" is not a common (general public) term I think a more impactful number for your example is that the example economy would have to grow *33%* to get the same $10,000 in revenue. Even if you took the most outlandish growth estimate, you wouldn't even come close to touching 33%.

Trump also gets furious when he sees what he has said, verbatim, even with video footage. He gets so mad at it that he thinks it's "fake". But I don't think he's mad at what he says or about his policies. It's just that it hurts his ego that he got called out. That's what makes him furious.

If you cut from 90% to 70%, I could see a situation were economic growth could reduce the deficit.
But, the USA don't pay 90% taxes.

It honestly doesn't matter whether or not he means well. The result is the result. No amount of goodwill would solve incompetence. This is why, to me, stupidity is the worst kind of evil, but it's an evil we just let slide because it's unintentional.

Ironically, even though all this is true, the sense of psychological connection between Trump and his base, kind of "Trumps" their ability to put their trust in someone else who they can't envision represents their interests. So, if I sound like I'm someone who you'd invite over for dinner and still cons you, I've established a psychological connection tougher than steel. What a dilemma for the country.

Trump heard a guy once say something was good. Trump believes it and sees it as a way to get people to cheer him on.
But when Trump make this thing happen, he hears the rest of the story and gets angry and blames everyone for not telling him this would happen. They embarrassed him.
So, the next day, Trump heard from another guy who once said something was good............

The only place you're going wrong is blaming anyone for voting for anyone. Don't do this. We don't want start targeting people for voting for the _wrong_ candidate. Better to tell them who's the better candidate and leave it at that.

actually, in Germany the car industry has a multiplier of not 3,3 but 3,4... :-) in the end you should do this stuff incrementally and maybe on a state by state basis to see to what extent it really works.

At least the math is correct. To get back to $4K in tax revenue you would need to have a $13K economy. a/k/a 33% growth !!! When has that ever happened?

  • @martman1466

David, if federal tax revenue as a percentage of GDP were 30% then your example would be a good one. However, federal tax revenue as a percentage of GDP was only 12.3% last year not counting Social Security taxes which do not go to general revenue and thus do not reduce the deficit.
If tax cuts were $150 billion next year ($1.5 trillion over 10 years is the Senate proposal) then GDP would have to grow $1.2 trillion more than it would have otherwise for those cuts to pay for themselves ($150 billion divided by 12.3%)....not even counting that the tax cut would lower that 12.3% number.
That would be a ridiculous and unheard of multiplier effect on GDP of 8 from those tax cuts ($1.2 trillion divided $150 billion). Another way of looking at it is that with a current GDP of about $18.5 trillion and expected growth of 2% next year ($370 billion), the economy would have to grow instead by 8.5% instead or $1.57 trillion ($1.2 trillion plus $370 billion) for that $150 billion tax cut to pay for itself.

I believe David's analysis is partly incorrect. Americans always seem to think that tax is just wasted money, but the reality is that it employs people, or provides services. So, when you cut tax, it can be a zero sum gain if those cut services now have to be paid for in the private sector, which isn't necessarily more efficient. You only get growth if you make people work harder, or more efficiently. (Or you steal it from some other country.)

Actual data from the IMF and OECD on the effects of tax cuts:
"we find an inverse relationship between the income share accruing to the rich (top 20 percent) and economic growth. If the income share of the top 20 percent increases by 1 percentage point, GDP growth is actually 0.08 percentage point lower in the following five years, suggesting that the benefits do not trickle down. Instead, a similar increase in the income share of the bottom 20 percent (the poor) is associated with 0.38 percentage point higher growth."
    www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/sdn/2015/sdn1513.pdf
"New OECD analysis suggests that income inequality has a negative and statistically significant impact on medium-term growth. Rising inequality by 3 Gini points, that is the average increase recorded in the OECD over the past two decades, would drag down economic growth by 0.35 percentage point per year for 25 years: a cumulated loss in GDP at the end of the period of 8.5 per cent."

Economies work best when money is being spent and moved around from person to person or business to business. If you give an average worker $1,000 they will spend it, spurring the economy. If you give a billionaire $1,000,000 they will hide it away in an off-shore bank or figure out some way not to pay tax on it. They aren't going to hire somebody. No business hires people that they don't need just because they can afford it now. Seems so self-evident to me, and I'm no economics genius.
