Everyone's saying how badass Bradford is, but that other guy sure kept his cool and remained at his station unlike his fleeing comrades.

During the base defense, is when I met a valiant XCOM Base Security member. Jenkins, as he was named, has been an unforgettable companion, showing up from the beginning, never missing his shot, and never being hit. He alone proved superior to XCOM rookies. But then, at the end of the mission, while out of cover, he bravely held the line, dodging simultaneously fire from a muton, sectoid commander and a sectopod, before he fell to fire from a cyberdisc. He fell, taking on enemy fire so that nobody else could get hurt, and after getting kills on more aliens than my actual XCOM troops, he sacrificed himself for the team. He was a true hero.
10/10 Would experience again

Samuel Lacey If I remember correctly, the sectopod shot it down with its first attack as it missed him, only to later miss again, and as he was out of cover, literally every single enemy in the room decided to shoot him. In his final moments, he drew enemy fire throughout the entirety of the enemy turn, from the first hit from the sectopod to the last hit from the aliens, made by the cyberdisc, thus ensuring that nobody else died in that mission, and true to that, he was my only casualty.
Mr Jenkins: Tell me, did my son............. How did he die?
"His neck was snapped and his body was burned beyond recognition with a high tech compound."

Surprising enough, despite the amount of things that blow up both in the cutscene and the battle, not one dollar needs to go into repair costs.
The council probably gave the XCOM project insurance money for the repairs in case of the base being breached so that they could directly focus on kicking alien ass.

I think it wouldn't take that long since I've had this point at least in my playthrough I managed to hack a bunch of probes the repair ones
The xcom base defense mission will probably have sucked the soul out of you when it's done. You'll have lost some of your best soldiers and have spent probably over an hour on this mission. More penalties is just adding insult to injury.

I had no idea this was coming and it really got to me. I was playing on Ironman and so I was terrified that I'd been too slow or something and that I'd failed. I was actually really invested when Bradford was fighting for his life. When he managed to defend himself and get ahold of that gun I lit up. I knew we had a chance.
Damn good cutscene.
I never had beaten this mission on Impossible Ironman. Darn.
I really got to say that this is the MOST epic scene in the game.

I Really liked this one and some of them with the EXALT
+Détective Swiftnote Imagine if they made an Xcom movie. no sure what theme it go on. I mean action is a given but would hey make i like a alien movei where a squad get killed off one by one (except plot amour main characer) of course. Or idk what they go with.
It would work as a series with a cast of soldiers who could die at any moment, and their friends at HQ. Each episode is a mission
Base assult could be a sort of season finale and a death or something could happen a long good bye by a medical bed or something Tio Bridge
It would work more like a tv series actually.
Definitely one of this biggest "Oh shit!" Moments in Xcom, next to the Fishing Village mission, and the first Terror attack before laser weapons.

This.. completely took me by surprise. I knew about it, I've seen the trailer yet I had no clue it'd be so sudden, and epic too. Lost like, 4 of the special security units, and my Colonel Sniper :< but XCOM wasn't shut down, so yay?

Oh how I missed the nostalgia of fighting for the entire progress of your save with starting rifles despite having plasma weapons in store... against mutons... and chryssalids... and mechs...

Butter of Sorrow if you leave your weapons equipped from the previous mission, they can keep them.
This totally took me by surprise. I knew that base defense was part of the package, but I just didn't expect it to happen so cinematically. It happened about 2 weeks after I assaulted the Alien base and captured their Sectoid Commander and Hyperwave Relay.

I've beaten the game on Classic+Ironman. Amanda "Kitty" from Australia was the last surviving soldier from the first squad who made it to the power armour and plasma weapons. Amanda saved the day during the engagement with the first downed UFO. Amanda was a team's medic, and once she rushed to her bleeding comrade and took 3 overwatch shoots from tin man on stupid council missions. The only colonel I've ever lost... Damn't. She was not some rookie who failed to capture an alien on his first mission (that's a test every xcom wannabe must pass). At that point of the war I wasn't loosing soldiers, let alone to some silly thin mans.
Jesus Bradford does not take shit from ANYBODY. Always made me wonder what his background was to make him so awesome.

Blowing up the Skyranger made me so irrationally angry. Really made this feel personal.
And the chills at the end... My heart-rate was crazy and my hands were literally shaking realizing the situation, that failure was not an option here.
One of the best moments in gaming I've ever experienced.

I had a similar reaction. "You blew holes in my nice clean base - AND broke my transport! You know how many panic missions I had to do to get the panic levels down JUST to pay for satellite coverage to buy that damn thing?"
I was fortunate enough that my first wave of reinforcements had a MEC trooper.

At least the aliens are too polite to bomb you on turn 1... in OpenXcom.
Those aliens paid dearly for what they did in my game. We made them sorry they ever tried to walk in

@Velociraptors of Skyrim And no option to build the base to funnel them into psionic and blaster bomb death.
Blaster bombs in this version are just curvy rockets anyhow. In the original they were Multi Bottle Rockets.

Easily my favorite mission in XCOM. Though it was extremely tense and my people barely survived (can't say the same for the rookie security). Especially since I use the *make items available* button, so my assault arrived with default armor and shotgun
I love how this mission simply came out of nowhere and the feeling of panic. Once my MEC troopers appeared, it was go time!
Lucky you for having MEC troopers. I legit had unprepared troops with the standard weapons when doing this mission. I was scared shitless for every decision I made so I wouldn’t get anyone killed
I had to makr due on clasic with all but 2 people haveing reguler guns insted of plasma weapons and bassicly all had normal armor only 3 people survived

The "HURR DURR GREEN SWEATER" remarks are a great way for people to identify that they're 11 years old and don't leave the house much. That's a British Army commando sweater.

this was awesome and terrifying to watch. And central really gives you the feeling the shit is going down after all the hours of work you put into that base
I'd like to imagine Central dual wielding Arc throwers while you were out protecting Delta Section. Shame we failed the base defense given XCOM 2's plot, the sheer image of Bradford kicking ass would have been a sight to see.
I remember getting so pumped in my seat when this event happened on my playthrough.
That closing clip where the bay door slowly opens and you can hear the ominous chattering of sectiods from beyond the threshold.
XCOM was great, even by today's standards.
Reminds me so much of Mass Effect 2 when your ship gets suddenly hacked, and boarded while you are gone. Complete epic surprise and shock that you didn't expect or prepared for. Which I sincerely loved :D

Jasper Edwards dude the game is 5 years old, Expect that people are going to talk about plot points after such a long time. It's not like I spoiled the ending for you, just one of many epic moments of the game. It will catch you by surprise either way, trust me.

After watching the Xcom 2 Avenger defense cut scene all I could think of was how much better this was compared to it. God this was a good cut scene.
The Avenger cutscene was fine.

If you ask me there is a difference between fine and "Oh dear god they're in my base. THEY'RE IN MY BASE OH SHIT!" This one gives me the later. The Avenger assault is...fine.
@@renimusmaximus I think the major difference is how the aliens get you.
The Avenger is a mobile base and they never actually manage to breach into it (it's a loss condition, after all).
The base is hit by sabotage through mind controlled units, we see several facilities get absolutely demolished and the aliens then just walk in through the door, THEY'RE IN YOUR HOUSE.
Another reason for the cinematic difference: the avenger defense is repeatable.
This is a story quest.

as awesome as this was, imagine if bradford was playable for this one mission. he'd have a pistol, a green sweater, and he'd be extremely pissed off.
(to avoid continuity issues, his character could never die ... if his health reached 0, he'd be critically wounded)

Rod Actually, you can get Sectoid Commanders *and* Ethereals on this mission.
I barely managed to get away with this when I first played it. It caught me completely off guard (working as intended?) and many rookies and disposable guards got killed
+Stormtrooper Elite I don;t know the exact co-relation to when the defense happens after the alien base assault but a lot of times if you aren't prepared most of your best team is being augmented, upgraded or unavailable and that reaction is scary.
Funny enough, fist time this happened to me, up until i heard the alien noises at the end, I thought it was an EXALT raid. Since the augmented Exalt soldiers have eyes similar to mind controlled people from their.... hasty implants.
I didn't even buy an ARC Thrower until I had a squad of at least 6 Colonels.
Whatever else might be said about this game, the transition into this mission and the mission itself was immaculate
Aside from periodically being screwed by RNG, I can't think of a single bad thing said about this game...

Exalt raid if a cell goes unchecked for too long.
Alien raid if you fail at destroying a special ufo.
Exalt/Alien combined assault if you have a terror mission in a country with an Exalt cell.

This totally took me by surprise. I played XCOM EU and then XCOM EW blind. I got chills during it and realized I'm fucked. That cutscene is a masterpiece.

Actually, it is likely that this is how you loose canon, as the opening scene in XCOM 2 is most definitely the Base Assault.
what is more likely is that Bradford is wounded and unconscious, but not dead.

If you guys like the base defebse concept you should try the long war mod. Base defense isn't just a one time thing there(not saying the original base defense is bad its just that its more of a plot device) along with new classes for soldiers,new weapons and gadgets,and new gameplay mechanics
The XCOM Base defense and in XCOM 2 Avenger defense missions are still hype as fuck and gets your adrenaline really pumping... loving it!
I lost a Security Guard, Shaojie “Chilong” Zhang, and one of my best Mec Troopers during this base assault.
I should be mad about it, but it honestly made my campaign a lot more epic than it should be!
Man, I was super nervous during this scene cause I just put most of my main troops to enhance or something and I only had my reserve troops and a bunch of noobs. Man, that was a tense battle!
Ok i have to admit FIRFAX YA'LL NEED TO MAKE A 30 MINUTE MOVIE. i dont know just as epic as this! just when was going on i did not know this would happen.....i knew like "Great now we have to fight these guys." BUT THEY SEND MORE ALIENS THEN WHAT YOU RECEIVE IN NORMAL BATTLES! EVERY ROUND IT IS ALWAYS 3 OR 4 ALIENS TO YOU AND THEY ARE THE BIG ONES! but the end scene where looking at the door then it just popped open just gives me chills....its like a guy with a big loud deep voice saying "GET READY!"

Get the F buttons out for all of our Rk Standard Security reinforcements. These guys may be the cannon fodder of the defense force, but they are definitely the types that’ll leave the enemy singed enough to do actual damage.
had a glitch in my game and could not watch the cut scene. Was bummed out. Thanks for posting so I can see the awesomeness
Oh man, the first time in base defense I got wrecked so bad...
One of my main guys was wearing crappy armor and LMG... I had no idea where the drop points would be so my positioning was pretty bad, I got punched in the face several times by brutes landing too close to me... lost my best heavy in the first minutes when I got swarmed by 3 disks (he bravely blew a chunk of their health away in his final stand, before getting his head shot off).. in the end, I had 3 guys left and 1 MEC all pretty banged up vs a shitload of aliens... my assault got mind controlled and that was the end of everything...his sniper girlfriend committed suicide, MEC malfunctioned and support missed her over 80% shot.. XCOM was lost :(
Luckily, even on Ironman it let me restart the mission afterwards and then I managed a clean sweep with all my guys surviving and in good health even :)
When I saw this cutscene for the first time I thought I bloody lost the game at first. But yeah this can really take players by surprise if they don't know about it, since your soldiers are likely unequipped and the game will just throw them in there anyway.
I wasn't ready for base defense either the first time I played it. In the end, I had no choice but to restart the entire game from scratch.
That was because all my good troops(colonels) had died, and I was left with the new recruits. And I didn't bother to allow the others to go into missions earlier on, so that was my grave mistake.

aaaanddd after the 70% destruction inside the base, the ship, the workshop and everything went back to normal
It didn't. XCOM loosed this battle. Commander was captured. Bradford and Chen managed to escape. Vahlen is MIA. Memories of future battles are commander acting as a node in alien simulations while he was hold in some sort of stasis suit. That is according to canonical story.
I like to think that XCOM 2 set in an alternate universe where all that did happen and the ending of XCOM one is a regular Universe where they managed to be back the aliens
I still get pumped at that ending of the cutscene. Like. All that scrambling, panic, and 'HOLY SHIT ALIENS BREACHING THE DOOR' and the door has the AUDACITY to just.

I don't know why but that combined with the aliens doing their hello right after just makes me want to beat the shit out of them. I mean for FUCK sake they pissed off Bradford.

Micheal McCann did such a good job with the music in this game.
I was surprised so much when seen it first time.
It was this moment I knew, I fucked up.
I think half of my team was being upgraded or healed and I mostly had support units no big tank or anti-tank units. I actually stopped playing afterwards cause I couldn't find a way to stop all the enemies from absolutely destroying me. The rookies literally didnt do any damage so I had like 2/3 useful soldiers and end up reloading if any of my elite team members died. I also was taking my team researching on separate branch at the same time instead of focusing on one.
I love how the scene shows the globe flickering, The torch of Humanity resistance is about to be snuff out, it's up to you Commander.

Ah, Base Defense (Classic)- i made it after third attempt, with losing 6-7 agents (including these security) and one of my MEC trooper (luckily MEC armor wasn't lost) was one of fallen. Damn you, Sectopods!

Best cutscene and track in the game.
Yeah, yeah, Bradford is badass and all... But what that cutscene doesn't show you is how the comander appeared from his (or her) office with a bazooka and said "say hello to my little friend" before launching a full scale explosive rampage, yelling "WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT EXPLOSIVES NOW, HERR DOKTOR?!"
A few seconds later, The commander gets the old "Lights Out" move from a Muton and ends up captured, sealing the fate of the planet and setting the stage for XCOM 2
His door. You aren't the Commander, you're actually playing as an Ethereal guiding him.
... and that's why they keep Bradford around.
This is why Bradford doesn’t take to the field too often; it must get tiring, carrying around those brass balls.

In canon this battle is the last for Xcom because the base was overrun with alien. Bratford, Vahlen and Shen live, and some soldiers from xcom scape, like the psionic rooke who appearse in Chimera Squad or the CEM pilot girls. But in canon we lost, and all of the investagion of Shen change to make a guardian for her child Lili. Vahlen is missing state. And Bratford is drinking alot.

My only disappointment is that we only got to use a few of our squad members rather than deploying our entire team...and the fact that none of the stage took place in any cutscenes of the game.
So in the "official" canon, this is when Xcom was destroyed and fled... The fall of Earth, before the events of Xcom 2

i love the security guys it gives you. i would always just put them out of cover in vulnerable positions whenever my special guys were at risk at the aliens would always shoot them.

I had the opposite experience - those security guys landed more shots than any of my reserve rookies.
I was like: "Do you want his job? You can have it. You're a way better soldier."

Kinda wish that the base assault was initiated by EXALT rather than aliens. Actually, i wish EXALT got more love in general cuz even though they seemed pretty badass conceptually, they were ultimately pretty throwaway with the stuff they have.
