It looks like the council spokesman fired two shots with his mag pistol before the ADVENT troopers could respond, missing his first shot, but scoring a critical hit on the second. Then the surviving ADVENT trooper missed. This should be its own mini-game...
I like to think that the man-in-black isn't wholly human - never was. Possibly a hybrid dating back to the Bureau days. His pattern of speech is irregular enough to be concerning.

After this happened, I bombed a random mission pretty hard. Like 2 squaddies down. It sucked so bad that the spokesman came back to life to tell me how mediocre my monthly performance was. Still hurts man.

When I first saw him in Enemy Unknown, I didn't trusted him. There was always something weird about him.
He reminded me of those higher-ups that may seem focused on the mission, but are all about their personal agendas.
XCOM2 was no different, I felt he was somehow with the aliens. Then this cinematic happened.
It hit me, hard. He was never lying. He was always in my side. Yes, he was sketcy, but now I think it was something that came with the position.
He believed in the commander, and I only realized that too late.

I do love the way he says Hello Commander.
Actually what struck me in XCOM 2 is that the Spokesman is the true hero of both games.
In the first, he is convinced that funding XCOM is a good idea and organises all the support that the countries have for them.
In the second game, every government on Earth started collaborating with the aliens. Then you have the Spokesman, who continued to be a human loyalist and act as a mole for _twenty fucking years_ , even when there wasn't an effective resistance movement. TWENTY YEARS. And then he gives his life (or seems to) on top of that.

@@SerMattzio I've heard hypothesis that the Spokesman is the MC from X-COM: The Bureau, complete with his rebel Ethereal passenger. Would explain both his nearly over the top dedication to the cause as well as his longevity.

Video feed cannot confirm his death. Only that the first shots from advent troopers missed. I wouldn't be surprised to hear about him again in the next game. Also is it just me or Ty is even more fishy than Dr.V ?
He got the first soldier, and the second soldier missed hitting the camera, so we don't know for sure. Also, if he could survive the initial invasion, i'm sure he could survive this.

If some alien specie invaded earth and offered positions of power to politicians in exchange for their collaboration, the few politicians that would refuse would either be dead, or badass like the spokesman.
I like to think that not all of them are bad, after all at one point we had Kennedy, but most are just there for making a quick profit or outright corrupt
@@KalashVodka175 While that is true, I think that even the most corrupt politician would see that the Avatar Project would certainly spell their own doom as well. Helping XCOM might be their best course of action for short term survival

The Spokesman's practically the (faceless)face of XCom now, there's no way they're gonna kill him off. They obviously left his fate up in the air. Just adds to the character's mystery.

yeah... the shadowy suit in a dark boardroom usually is a duplicitous snake. The Spokesman is definitely the one glaring exception to this basic rule of thumb.
Yeah, I was suspecting both him and Tyghan. Also I was expecting to see Dr. Vahlen in ADVENT ranks as well (either volunteer or as Wade Wells from Sliders)
Which is why he was able to last so long. Noone, not even the Commander knew who he was, so he was able to blend in for Years.

Ivan the Terrible's Sophistry Emporium makes you wonder about all the crap he had to go through before the war during and all the way through until the commander was retrieved.
God damn it, this man was the reason why I persisted in the Long War and kept telling me that the Council was watching me. Back in 2012, I know I put my men through their paces with this new threat upon the world and many gave their lives to try and secure a better future for us, but after an incredibly long war of attrition, I lost all motivation to continue the fight. When I returned, this man was still willing to assist me, even up to his point of death. Honestly after seeing this, I'm willing to put in the time and effort for the good fight, to see it to its end, and show the aliens what we are truly capable of.

He used to be a hit man, then he took a bullet in the knee.
Old but he killed the company and hunted their allies, along the way he discovered what they had planned for the aliens invasion ahead of time and used their assets against them. The repentants of the Company went to ground and became Exault as XCOM was founded. It’s how he knows of them and them of him.
Though honestly I want to see some form of ally from the spokesman like some cool swat/spec ops looking dudes with mad skills we sometimes have to help and possibly recruit if we do well or horribly enough. Adds to the badassery for these elite troopers to be trained by the “council” itself

he is the real reason you won that battle, you were actually fighting a skeleton crew as the advent sent as many troops as they could to bring this guy down.
the spoke person didn't die, if you pay attention the camera gets shot, meaning he wouldn't be able to send anymore info to Xcom, so he could still be alive,

Ik this is old, but they wouldn't send 2 troopers to such a high profile mole, so it is assumed more troopers slotted in and either shot him or otherwise, or maybe they did just send 2 guys after him or he got away, we shall never know.
@@TemmieContingenC that can also be the case, but I feel like this character is smart enough to probably have a hidden door or an alternate escape in that room, but other then that we have no information about if he did die or not.

Even if wounded, chances are advent would have stasis-suited him just like the commander to see if they could extract information, yet likely could not complete an interrogation due to the uprising. Chances are, XCOM 3's Gatecrasher might be to free the Spokesman

I dont think the bureau is in the same timeline as Xcom Enemy unknown and Xcom 2.

No matter how many times I see my soldiers die, it would be no where near as sad as the Spokesman's death.
I refuse to believe the spokesman died right there. Apart from Bradford and possibly Vahlen he's the last of the OG guys from Enemy Unknown.
Dude's too awesome to die like that man. Hopefully XCOM 3 implies his survival, and with the way they're kinda tying The Bureau and EU+2 the spokesman might be a Zudjari all along.

This guy had a better aim than all the X-COM team alltogether. From a chair, while turning back, guy behind defense, with a PISTOL and one shots him. Meanwhile my shotgunner is uncapable of hitting a 300kg mecha, from 2 meters in overwatch.
Or how about when you have a sniper with clear line of sight, with a advance scope missing a 300 kg mecha while having a 100% chance to hit
It's gonna take more than some ADVENT Troopers to kill this legend, even the elite version only has 6HP and the council guy probably has hunters instinct and superior repeater, I don't believe for a second this man's dead

i just took the spokeman for granted most of my playthrough, almost skipping most of the time he shows up on screen. when i saw this, my heart sank. hope he makes a comeback.

This is how it would go since it's xcom. He scores a critical overwatch shot on a rushing advent, the second one miss a 89% shot, he take a 23% shot with a pistol, crit again and then escape.

I've always loved the "shadowy government official" trope they used from the original X-Com to its modern remakes.
He was my favorite guy, I always called him Mr. Shade because he was always in the dark with dim lighting to hide his appearance, and he always provided for me and the boys. A truly shady guy that we needed and deserved.

would be funny if he were just a janitor at that secret communications tower who maybe pretended to be a sort of Forrest Gump so they wouldn't suspect him, but in his janitor's closet he was acting like a bad ass leader and informer. Hello, gentlemen.

With somebody like The Spokesman, I gotta see the body before I believe he isn't gonna show back up.
I was so heartbroken from seeing this scene. I actually thought the mission right after they broke into his office would be to rescue and evacuate him, or at least some easter egg in the end of the game where they'd hint that he is alive (like Shepard at the end of Mass Effect 3). He is just too iconic to the game. AND even if he were finally caught and killed, then at least the game should have had a more epic final mission and an ending. The ending we saw was soooo cheesy and poorly animated. I mean, some ridiculous human resistance fighters with arm bands just walk into the bases and that's all? Come one Firaxis. X- Com 2 is a great game that was done iin a half assed way.
I always thought he survived the encounter, but more ADVENT troops poured in, captured him but by the time you took out the comm tower and destroyed the Avatar project, he made an escape

So i have done some *math* and.... The chances are suprisingly low
First off, our badass has what appears to be a mag pistol (It's a different kind for sure, but it shoots the same)
A mag pistol does 3 - 4 damage
The weakest ADVENT Trooper has 3 HP
So it would definetly be possible to kill an ADVENT Trooper with a single shot
Now onto the math - A typical XCOM rookie has an aim of 65, so we'll be generous and add additional 10 aim to our favourite badass. (75 aim)
Also since the ADVENT Trooper was out of cover, there would be a 50% crit chance.
The formula for calculating this is quite simple ---- Aim of shooter - Target's defence + weapon range modifier
An ADVENT Trooper however does not have any defence, but here is the catch..
The Councilman was on ovewatch. Since he fired on ADVENT's turn, he had to be on overwatch.
Overwatch multiplies your aim by 0.7 and has no critical chance.
Now onto the final calculation: (75 * 0.7) - 0 + 0 = *52,5%*
And that is only the kill chance for the *weakest* trooper. To kill a regular trooper at this stage of the game he would have to deal 4 damage. To kill an advanced trooper, he would have to score 6 - 9 damage. And if ADVENT send elite troopers? 8 - 11 damage (plus they have 10 defence, so the hit chance would be 42,5%)
So there you have it. The Councilmaster really is a lucky badass. Thank you for reading.

I have reasons to believe that after this cutscene, if you have the ambient narrative enabled in XCOM 2, wait a while after this cutscene, when you are in the base management side, and you will hear something that suggests something. I believe that what I heard was NOT a recording. I do not want to spoil it, but I just want to know if anyone else hears what I heard from the ambient narrative.

Fun fact: This is the only laser weapon we see outside of XCom unknown/within, somehow the spokesman has a gun noone else has that wasn't even developed in this main timeline

All I'm saying is The second soldier missed his shot , wiffed his left arm and hit the computer system so there was no confirmed hit on him and he's obviously very accurate himself with that insta kill overwatch shot , I think he's still alive
If you slow down the video to 0.25 you can see that the laser blast clearly misses the spokesman and hits his computer
SO basically the only reason we actually saved the world was that the Elders did the classic villain thing and wanted to broadcast their plan (albeit a nice version) to the whole damn world xD

I love this cutscene and the spokesman so much. He has a red and blue light over each shoulder which tells me of his duality. The red light is much bigger and brighter which tells me that he has done lots of things for the greater good that he will burn for, but the blue light remaining tells me it was all for humanity and that ultimately it was all worth it.
"I ask one more thing of you. Take what you have learned, let the world know what is happening here, wake them up, broadcast the truth before there is no one left to listen."

That line when I first heard it in game sent shivers down my spine bro, biggest G is Xcom history and we don't even know his name.

You know, I prefer how the original had no voiceacting and there was just text.
Also I absolutely hate it when a reboot gets given the same name as the original making it impossible to tell the serch engine which youre looking for when you have a specific version in mind.
