  • The Zero FXE CBT legal electric motorcycle is not made for long-distance travel but how well can it handle motorway speeds and how will that affect the range for the average commute?
Did you know? "People living in rural areas travel furthest to work, on average is 11.7 miles, while those in metropolitan areas outside London travel the shortest distance on average 6.9 miles."
Big thanks to English Electric Motor Co. AKA EEMC for the loan of the machine for a couple of weeks to get to know and bring you videos and a review!

Enjoying these videos, as an out right petrol head, who changed from cars to bikes I can see the appeal of this bike. Everyone needs to be more open minded to the idea. This as a daily and a petrol bike in the garage as a hobby weekend toy would definitely work for me. Of course I would miss the feeling of an engine at first but like you have said, it's still a bike and the sensation of riding it is the same.

I partly agree as the price is unquestionably high at the moment due to it being a new tech. But chargers? Download zap map and look where the fast chargers are, they are no more than a few miles apart across the county pretty much.

Love your comment on the comment you got about range and charging 🤣 I quite like some of these electric bikes but the big stop for me has never been range of ev's it's always been charging time for full range. Don't mind 100 mile (would prefer a bit more) if it was say 10/15 mins to get full range charge, but I do think it's just a matter of time till technology can do that. Anyways great vid 👍

The problem here is Zero... they have no reason to not have DC charging, it's very old tech by now. Their standard version comes with a PC cable plug, not even the standard AC connector that you have to pay extra. It's insulting right now.
Harley and Energica had it from the start, and we are talking more then 6 years, it's an eternity.
With the low capacity of the Zeroes, 15 minutes 80% charge is really feasible with DC charging.

I'm still in the unsold on electric motorcycles, even though I know I could do 50% of my road riding on one possibly. The cost massively puts me off TBH.... mainly because I can do any of the riding an ev bike can offer on any of my other bikes, but without any of the inconvenience of an ev.... and I already own those bikes.
If I won the lottery or had a win-fall that was not needed on any debts, I would get an ev bike, and I bet I would love it. On the forum I run, a chap has the HD Livewire, and loves it, and has recently ridden it on a 2500 mile bike tour, so you can do distance, if you have the time to do it between charging. But they are currently rich people toys on the whole. I may in a year or so, have access to some small range ev bikes, which will be interesting to test, and to see if it can be done effectively and cheaply.

OK,so, if 'most' people drive or ride electric vehicles, then obviously there needs to be a lot more charging points.
As you pointed out, this could be done in multi storey carparks etc.
However,; where does all the extra electricity come from?
Power stations are currently running at near maximum output during winter and peak times, so, you'll need to increase output, or build more power stations.
    But.........what powers the power station??
    Nuclear energy? Fossil fuels?
    Not very ecological really 🤔
    Just a thought?!

I think that everyone should take responsibility for pedestrian's safety. As the road user who is a danger to another expecting responsibility from the other road user just puts people in danger. Everyone has to look out for everyone and keep accidents from happening. Pedestrians have to look before they cross and bikes/cars should slow/stop for pedestrians. Just respect other people's space like you expect them to respect yours.
I walk to work every day and my job involves walking through a parking lot so I couldn't tell you how many times car drivers in particular see you and make the choice to ignore you.
I appreciate these real world analysis of these bikes though. Normally you either get people that are just bashing to crap out of them because eek electric or you have the opposite.

The peak power output is the same at 33kW, or 44kW on the 14.4 bikes. The difference is in the continuous power output, the thing is no one knows for sure how that rated is measured. My best guess is that it's the power required to hold a certain percentage of the top speed, my reasoning for this is a basic interpretation of the testing procedure documents and the fact the 11kW bikes are limited to a lower top speed. I've also heard that they have a lower temp limit for the motor.

It's a shame Zero doesn't have an adapter cable to plug in a level 2 charger. They sell a charger that has cables and can reduce charging time by 60%. Why not sell and adapter and cables compatible with a level 2 charger? This would make the bike so much more viable.

Well that depends. 99% of my journeys are to work which is an 80 mile round trip so even in winter when the battery efficiency drops its still more than enough. Severely reduce the size of car batteries (and standardize them like AA and AAA) to the size of maybe 2 current car batteries and make battery changing stations similar to how oil change places have those under car dugouts. Add robots to change out the batteries in just a minute or two and charge people a monthly fee for battery services. Electric Bikes could be the test subjects seeing as the batteries are already quite small.

Funny thing: this is the same with ICEs.
Sure, you have gears to limit it but it's not magic, it still requires more energy to move faster, as Newton teaches us.
The only difference is that electric range is estimated much more easily and much more precisely and because of that is more evident.
With a petrol engine you consume while idling, you consume a ridiculous amount of energy while starting, and you waste all of that when slowing down.
It's much harder to determine how much you consume, so the higher consumption at highway speed are not really that easy to discern.
Like every time I fill my 110" Low Rider S Harley tank (17 l), it estimates I have more then 300 km of range. LOL, I never got anywhere need that. XD

Lots of sensible comments here, but you should have established whether or not it was the 11kW version, and what the precise differences are between an 11kW and a full power FXE. Also, you should have mentioned the battery size in kWh - 7.2 kWh, as compared to the new Energicas' 21kWh and the bigger Zeroes' 14.4 kWh. Finally, what you say about scooters is only true of small ones - if you've never ridden any of the ton-plus capable maxiscooters, you really should treat yourself to a ride on one, especially a Tmax560!

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  2 роки тому

ok to answer these in order, it is the 11kw as mentioned in later videos and the review video, the price is the same, the top speed is the same and performance is hard to separate. The batt is 7.2 it is in 4-inch high letters on the side, it also seems to be the only size available in the UK if you look at Zero's website. I have review a Energica Eva Ribelle RS with a 21kwh batt that bike costs double this is a totally different thing. Re scooters, I would need a time code but from memory, I am talking about electric scooters, not petrol, and yes I have reviewed a Bergman 650 and 450. This is where watching my other videos on the bike and my channel before listing what errors you think I have made or missing info comes in handy. Total side note do you own a Tmax560?

@@spicy110 I didn't say they were errors, I'd say they were omissions - and that would still apply if I'd watched all your previous videos. Overall, it's a good review (as I've said on the Zero FB group). I'm pretty sure the 7.2 kWh pack is the only one that Zero fit, although the FXE's ancestor, the MX, (which I rode in 2011) used to come with two quick-release 3.6 'bricks' and the early FXs, back in 2013, had the same arrangement. It's Burgman with a U not an E, and 400 not 450 - just sayin'. FWIW I owned a Mk1 and a Mk2 Burgman 400 before I got my first 650, which I raced at Le Mans, amongst other circuits in France, in the maxiscoot class, during the week-long Moto Tour de France in 2003. No, I don't own a Tmax560, but I'd like to. I do own both a Mk2 and a Mk3 Tmax 500 (and I raced my earlier Mk1 in France too). 13:07 I believe you... I met a lot of people like this (especially online). Not 1000 miles (nor km) but still... people who literally trashed eMC because it doesn't go double the range of a petrol bikes for the same time of refuel/recharge.
The problem is that there are a lot of drawbacks to electric... but none focus on that, almost only on the stupid things.
A few weeks ago I rode a run with 41 Harleys, we touched the subject with a few friends, none ever mentioned that we stopped half an hour to refill the 12 litres tanks of the 883s and how the main limit would be to recharge 40+ bikes for a longer run (leaving alone long multi-days runs for reaching rallies).
That's the main problem for me, we stopped to eat at a beautiful restaurant on the lake shore and no way to charge an EV while eating.
Until every place get a fast DC charger on each parking spot, that's going the main limit for my biker lifestyle*. And we'll get it, I'm sure.
People don't remember, as I don't because I wasn't born yet, that gas stations weren't around 100 years ago. The current infrastructure wasn't there where petrol cars first appeared, it's the work of over 100 years.
New charge points are popping up every day, and it's more then the percentage of electric/hybrid EVs on the road.
    * that said, I bought an Energica Eva as a second bike for commuting and short lone trips. I'll probably bring it on the track too.

I think e bikes are a waste of money, you can get a good second hand 125 or a new Chinese motorbike for the same price, yes you have to pay for fuel, tax and insurance, but the freedom of being able to go anywhere is worth the extra cost and bicycle only gets the side of the road, where as a motorbike is safer because you can ride in the centre.

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  2 роки тому

They do have pros over motorcycles in a few areas, like the fact you can take them on public transport, go though parks and go on cycleways motorcycles can't. If you live in the city you can take it in to your office, not leave it outside to be stolen. Insurance, tax and fuel is in the £1000's per year. Also no, due to new highway code regulations cyclists are encouraged to use the centre of the road in places it is safer for them to do so. The point is you buy what works for you. They work for a lot of people and that is why you see so many of them, like 50% of the bicycles I see now (with an adult riding them) are electric.

I am under the impression from the research I have done we are not running all our plants at 100% and we are adding renewables all the time. Adult size? The fxe is just slightly smaller than my DR and most people have no hope of getting their feet down on that.

@@spicy110 There is about 1.5% spare capacity on the grid. We don't have enough power stations.
We are too far north for solar to make too much impact. Wind is too variable. PV's and windmills are 'fragile' and cost a lot per watt and are not that environmentally to make.
      Biomass isn't environmentally friendly either.
We need to start fracking for gas. There is about 500 years worth under the mainland. If a fifth of it is recoverable it is a better return than North Sea gas. Under the North Sea there is another 1000 years worth. We have the infrastructure for gas. And gas stations are quicker to build than nuclear stations and are more easily scales. I would still build nuclear stations too.
It's all about base load. There is no way we can charge 30 million plus vehicles.

Wow I had no idea we could be that close and not deal with rolling blackouts.

How was the wind buffeting at motorway speeds? I owned a Zero DSR which had a pretty decent screen, so wind was never a problem, but I can only imagine what it must be like on the FXE.

I mean it's windy but it's not that bad, thing is tho I do own a supermoto so it's normal for me and being 6"4 no wind protection works for me anyway haha
