Similar to the drz 400 in performance FortyNine did the maths and after 20000 miles the £5000 difference if made up in maintenance and fuel and that was made before fuel went up 30% also this was if all maintenance was carried out on both bikes
I think £13K is reasonable considering that maintenance would be minimal with fewer moving parts in electric motors, cheaper to run with the cost of fuel at the forecourt’s rising faster than flash gorgon with a rocket up his (•) the trade off for shorter mileage is closing in to almost equal in newer batteries and fast charging being 1 hour or less, even horsepower isn’t a thing with electric motors delivering instant power. These are the future of personal travel needs too with ICE vehicles being phased out in a decade (+ or - a few years)
the problem is my commute has a lot of 40-60mph roads and one city away so this range wouldn't be enough to commute on..... but I would love to have an electric to commute on. there are no charging stations near my work either and I work in a big shared office building. I have really been looking to get something like an electric bike for a commute.
Really do like electric motorcycles I think thay make more sense than ev cars because generally motorcycles are used to commute smaller distances but the only thing about them at the moment is price
But not at thirteen thousand pounds, a local commute can be done way cheaper even for an electric bike, this is just not in the price range for a city commuter
Costs as much as a 450cc dirt bike here in the states, its street legal so what is the problem? (other than range) its fun to plug it into the wall socket.
If you look at miles total, instead of miles per trip, the value is still there long term. Gas, oil, filter, top end, clutch, spark plugs add up. Average annual fuel cost is $600 for Motorcycles, if you add that into the equation electric is comparable.
I've gone through puddles on my DS that were about the height of the front wheel. The FX/FXE/FXS would probably handle even more as the battery and charger are placed even higher
@Gary Wilkinson Done about a 2 foot wade on my old Zero SR, the older ones were fully sealed up to around the top of the motor controller (just under the seat)
so your telling me that I can go out on my cbt and get a 15hp electric bike that does 0-60 in 5.5 seconds thats quicker than most cars on the road and I think every 125 2 stroke and 4

Similarly priced to the BMW CE 04, but has more range and can argue that it's way more practical. Although the scooter has a compartment for your helmet. I'm a very big fan of the electric bikes and hope they figure out a way to make them more affordable in the future as they are wicked fun to ride! If you've ever ridden an electric bike and you got off and said it wasn't fun, you're lying!
Did you ever see a rack for the back ? Just order the Zero FXE . Should be picking up this week. I order the rack, but if did not have a picture or drawing of it.
My personal opinion is that even at that price for an urban situation they're a no brainer. Apart from the environmental cost of the battery production, the noise, air and congestion pollution in towns would be massively reduced if most people rode them. In the country though, where trips are much longer, they would need a range of at least 200 miles to be acceptable. Fast charging and bosses being amenable to charging while you work, would help too. I would miss the smell and sound of a combustion engine though 😁
Hi, I can get one of these 2nd hand for £6k, first bike but i am older 41...just want something for a quick blast at the weekends, what do you think? Worth it

FXE > TC Max > Miku Super In that order for price, quality, performance, range and fun. (Worlds between FXE and TC Max.) If you just need a super nimble and compact bike for mostly city commuting go for the TC Max. Well worth the price difference to the Miku, which is VERY plasticky.
Great review. It looks perfect for my daily commute into central Paris to replace my current Triumph. Parking is going to be close to impossible for petrol bikes as of this September while electric ones remain free. Most of my riding is urban/peri-urban aside from the occasional weekend jaunt. I do a lot of filtering and some ringroad riding. I will test ride one this weekend alongside a more sporty Zero. Would this model be your ultimate pick for 100 miles per week in urban environments?
I got mine in January and ride in and around Cologne, Germany. 3500+ km so far. It is THE perfect bike for you! (and me), for city commuting and having a blast in the evening. This is SO easy to ride and balance. I can do full stops and accelerate again without ever putting my foot down. It filters like a dream. High seating gives you the best views in traffic. Getting one was the best decision ever.
Regarding the price falling, I think we're on a roughly 3-4 year cycle on that front. There's two prevailing tailwinds, ie volume production increases drive unit prices down, so as the world makes more batteries, the price of electric motorcycles will follow. In addition, the more units that are sold, the bigger the second hand market becomes: I ride a 2018 Zero S and if I'd had to buy it new I would never have been able to afford it. I say 3-4 years, however, because there's a temporary headwind facing the battery industry that will prevent prices falling in the short term, even with the aforementioned tailwinds. That is, planned production capacity increases for raw materials to manufacture batteries are currently far below expected increases in demand for EVs. Mines take a long time to come online, and there's a predicted shortfall in Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt, and other necessary raw materials. Motorcycles depend on the very highest end batteries, because they need to keep the weight down and the energy density up. Tesla can make good cars with 200+ miles of range out of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, but you won't see a good motorcycle with one of these batteries. Maybe utilitarian scooters for the Asian markets. If you stretch your time horizon out to 2026-30, the market will be flooded with raw materials, and older EV batteries will begin to be recycled, further increasing supply. At that point, more players will have entered the market, and competition between brands will begin to bring the price down. The good news for early adopters, from my experience, is that these bikes will suffer very little degradation. I have 24k on my Zero's odo, and the range hasn't diminished at all. So while the price remains high, they should keep their value fairly well.
electric bikes are FUN, but the price needs to come down and i want to see what thease bikes are like after 10 years probiley wont hold charge any more

If you 'really' want an electric bike, you'll find one within your budget perhaps? I believe, that electric, or similar, bikes etc, are the future.......... Just not yet! Too expensive, still not enough infastructure (especially in rural areas), and the technology hasn't reach the point, where it's a viable alternative to petrol.........yet!! As I said, just my opinion. Great video, as always Spicy. Grumps.
@@spicy110 Yeah, its amazing, it a hell of a leg up from the Zero SR I used to ride. Enjoy the FXE, you are quite the lucky bugger to get to test all these bikes. :)
Be interested to see how many miles you'd have to cover over time to make the 13k worthwhile, I only commute 15 miles and this would be good but not being able to go much further than 40 miles on a weekend kills the whole idea off for me.
You won't be able to justify this bike on costing, to me this is a toy for people who have the cash, or really want to be early with electric. 60-80 miles is the range, 40 is on a highway.
Put a clutch and gear levers back, give it a curved power delivery depending on what 'gear' it's in then. Give it 7 gears on the electric bikes, that 1 more than most petrol bikes. Gears = more power, everyone knows that lol - Gotta sus those anti-electric bikers into liking the extra power. Seriously though, they need to put gears on the thing, fake it if they have to, but that's half the fun. Otherwise it's just a fast moped.
Horwin CR6 pro, first ever clutch and geared electric bike, but it only has half the power of this really, more like a traditional 125 but is a lot of fun!
I would just think about all the better bikes I could get for the money. Also a petrol bike will give the same power right until it runs out of fuel no mater the temperature. Electric bikes seem to lose performance as it loses charge or if it’s cold . How long do they have all the performance.
So don't buy one, not one is saying you should. However they do sell so people do buy them because they do do things no other bikes do. To me these sorts of comments are like going to a video about strawberry jam and saying think of all the other jams you could have, I don't like strawberries.
It's a real shame the government cut the incentive amount, that £2k or whatever it was made a big difference. My 7.2 DS was ex-demo with 100 miles for £8.5k so a pretty good deal, not sure if I would have paid the full £11k or whatever never mind £13k. £11-12k will get a couple year old used 14.4 S/DS with a few thousand miles, some even with the charge tank which is a £2.3k option
I can’t lie the beak on the front looks horrible I got a 2021 zero fxs 11kw version today and it’s the fastest 125 I’ve ever rode only thing I hate is the foot break but that’s my own problem. The bike is amazing the only thing I’ve noticed is a slight belt sound at around 8 mph
I think if I was going to get an electric I would need to have a petrol bike because I would miss the looks and the feel and the sound of a "real" bike
I'd like to know what makes these electric bikes are so expensive, especially considering the less moving parts and less engineering going into the production. £13k is more than twice the price I would consider for a commuter.
I like the idea of electric. Supper moto it looks nice the only that would like to see is away so car drivers can hear you better otherwise it's pullout and your in hospital great video keep up with the good work
For 13k, I'm getting a 2nd hand 19 plate, Tiger 1200 XRT. I know which one I'd rather have. The miles range is still waaaaay too low as well. If they get it to 200 miles, maybe, just maybe.
but for 13k it's a little bit on the extremely overpriced side of things. If the gov gave grants to make them comparable to combustion motorbikes then I'd switch in a heart beat.
it is not overpriced it is just expensive, where is the cheap one to make this over the odds? There isn't and no you can not compare petrol bikes in this, they are not the same thing.
@@spicy110 You have to compare, as you want to give a reason for people to switch. So comparing power outputs, it's 3-4 times the price of a 125 producing the same power. Regardless of what the bike does, a CBT licenced bike shouldn't cost over 5k end of story, 13k is well overpriced. Peak output of the A2 version is 15KW, and base line Tesla model 3 costing 4 times as much produces 11 times the power. Point being, the battery is what's overpriced on Electric motorcycles, yet Tesla is able to do just fine, and people still call those expensive cars, but frankly they are much much more comparable to their petrol counter parts, yet our electric motorcycles feel like decades behind. It's frustrating because they're great bikes. Also I realise I put in power and not battery capacity. Zero fxe 7.2KWh £13k = £1.8k per kWh Tesla model 3 62.3kWh £45k = £722 per kWh. Point being this bike if made by tesla would cost around 5k as per my previous statement about bikes in this range/power output shouldn't cost more than this figure.
I do not wish to make anyone get one, I just like them and tell people what it is like. As I have said this bike can not be argued as a good alternative directly, so In ways I agree. But if you want a electric supermoto with 400cc like power this is your only option. This is why I said I was going to treat it like a rich boys toy (that was in this video right? I can not remember haha) 13K is like £20 to some people and those people need reviews too!
If I was super rich why would I spend 13 grand on this bike when I can spend 20 grand on the Harley-Davidson LiveWire and get a better bike. It's best this is a beginner bike for the super rich . very niche the Zero DS is better and there's is a 11 kW version
Firstly you are still looking at the cost, to the rich the price doesn't matter, they want they buy. Also the Livewire is a bit poo, if you are rich get a Zero SR/F or a Energica Eva Ribelle RS!! Also keep in mind this is a supermoto, different animal! People who want supermotos do not want a cruiser! 😉
@@ilovemynewjacket1507 And again you're just throwing around numbers, the battery in this model costs around £5-6k and you'll get more than 40 miles from a charge unless you're sitting on a dual carriageway at 70mph the whole time. It does however take more than 4 hours to charge. It's not intended to be charged while you're out, you do your daily commute on it and then charge it over night.
People with the money, there are plenty of them out there. However the reason I cover electrics is because I am interested is following their progression, so no.

but for 13k it's a little bit on the extremely overpriced side of things. If the gov gave grants to make them comparable to combustion motorbikes then I'd switch in a heart beat.
it is not overpriced it is just expensive, where is the cheap one to make this over the odds? There isn't and no you can not compare petrol bikes in this, they are not the same thing.
Cheaper to use with fuel going up to (and possibly more than) £2 p litre
Zero fxe 7.2KWh £13k = £1.8k per kWh
Tesla model 3 62.3kWh £45k = £722 per kWh.
In usd prices for US natives these and HD live wire seem well priced
11 000
Is this an English road……??OMG a Brexit road.😮
Got bored few mins in... It's electric there all the same.. Over priced over weight long for a charge and you'll never break even vs a petrol
The FXS/FXE is one of the lightest bikes in its power class, about 10kg lighter than the DRZ400
@@HomoKieran you wait there for 4h for it to charge every 40 miles 😑 paying 10k for battery. But still lightest in class... A
@@ilovemynewjacket1507 And again you're just throwing around numbers, the battery in this model costs around £5-6k and you'll get more than 40 miles from a charge unless you're sitting on a dual carriageway at 70mph the whole time. It does however take more than 4 hours to charge. It's not intended to be charged while you're out, you do your daily commute on it and then charge it over night.
13 grand no thanks
Even second hand it will be 7000 to 8000 pounds which is way to much for a city commuter
Even at £2 a litre that's a lot of miles in petrol to get back.
And who knows what price we will be paying for electricity soon..
Who is buying this? 13k.. stop reviewing these stupid bikes.
People with the money, there are plenty of them out there. However the reason I cover electrics is because I am interested is following their progression, so no.
@@spicy110 maybe race it against a 125 and your DRZ then to show us how much quicker it is ?
Love it Spicy! Can’t afford it tho. Really enjoy your videos. Do you have plans making reviews of electrictrics ? Like Sur-Ron, CR9, Niu or other Super Socos?
