how cool...I designed this studio for Jason Hall in 2009. Seems like some of the elements have been changed, but many are still just like the original design. Great to know the studio is making great music! I really appreciate your channel...keep it up!
congrats :) looks like a cool place and for me a really good sized indie studio. ive done a few live to 2" tape records in a studio of similar size, drums and horns behind baffles, singer in the control room, bass DI etc..
So glad that guy doesn't have to lean over that console anymore to load his dryer.
The "secret" mic pre is a four channel tube pre= HHB RADIUS 10
your welcome.
thank you MASTER
Yeah. And they aren't that good.
I thought they were TLAudio
@@EricBlair-jg2ux They Are TL audio! I have 2 of them, Made by TL Audio for HHB in 1996, I used to sell both of them back then and knew Tony Larkin Well at the time!
That "what's a CD?" line hit me in the feels.
2160p or 144p, what a big decision XD
my data be STRUGGLING today
It’s the new vulf filter bro
Was wondering if that was just on my end.
its youtube lagging. bet there will be more options later
@@airutub3r you are indeed correct
Hohner is a german manufacturer of musical instruments. But very famous for their Accordions and the Clavinet D6 used by Stevie Wonder.
This video makes me miss the Nashville community so much! What a tight-knit, fun place full of talented & kind people.
My favorite part of this studio is their excellent taste in movies.
The Purple 4 channel Pre Amps with the cream coloured knobs are made by either TL Audio or HHB (Valve Tube Pre Amps)
Not TLA. It is HHB Radius 10. I hate people who are stingy with knowledge. Not hard to figure out. Nobody should stop others from being creative.
Is there census of home studios in Nashville? It’s gotta be at least 1 trillion
Magnificent project studio.
For anyone interested in the preamp at 50:00 minutes. It's the
HHB RADIUS 10.
How to keep a piece of gear secret: 1). Cover the label with tape 2). Invite Andrew Masters to a tour of your studio and explain how you don't want anyone else to know what it is 3). Expect no one in the comments to post what it is.
i thought it was TL Audio
But How good is it ?????? thats the question
TL and HHB are very similar. They literally look alike almost to the point where it's the same company. It could very well be the same company. I'm not sure. However ya this is the HHB Radius 10. They also made a Radius 40. Which has a VU meter. Hope it helps!
@@sideast In my opinion it's a good bang for the buck preamp, like he says in the video. I don't think it's anything to brag home about, but its certainly not bad at all. You can find them from $300 to $500. I'd say honestly if you can find it to $300 or less than ya, it's maybe possibly worth picking it up if you really need extra pre-amps. As well as don't want to break the bank. I believe in a: "save for something that you really really want mentality". So I don't really like buying gear unless it's something I know i'll be in love with forever. That's why i'd personally pass on it. Just my two cents!
Hey Anthony - just so you know, the prime time has unbalanced 1/4" outs on the back that are stereo 100% wet! get some unbalanced 1/4" to balanced (whatever your patchbay is) cables made and youre rocking in stereo and it sounds AMAZING. This will bypass the entire mixer section, so everything to the right of the multiplier knob is no longer part of the signal chain. This is how Lanois sets his prime times up. I was lucky once years ago to work with one of his former assistants and he gave me the inside scoop. Cool spot you got btw!
I really like how you got all up a personal with most all the gear, not that you haven’t done it in previous videos but I liked how you got closeups and took some time to allow the viewer to get a real good look. Again, great tour!!
Great studio, but man this guy can really talk, how does he retain all that information 😆
Those pre-amps are british TL-Audio tube pre's. They can sound pretty good.
Just signed up! Happy to be part of the community!
Thanks Laney, you're awesome!
Andrew keep em coming homie. Every studio tour I watch I wonder every time what kind of 🎵 they make.I produce & record hiphop the most my taste in music is like food Love all kinds.
Sick studio, love your layout
Electro Harmonix also made the Bi Filter, which is outboard rackmounted as well as the EH 8000 Guitar Synthesizer, which is also rackmounted. They also make the 12AY7 Mic Pre which is an outboard desktop unit...not to mention their pedals are all technically outboard gear.
I have never been much of a keys guy myself until recently. Though there was one keyboard at the studio I grew up in that I loved and could never remember the name of. It was in the session guitarists studio kitchen. It was a Wurlitzer. These videos made me remember the other day. Thing sounded so amazing. Now I want someone to do a shootout between modern versions. Like the crumar seven vs a vintage vibe classic/deluxe vs viscount legend compact or something. I’m sure there are others. I want one so bad now.
Great story. Hell yea
Superb!!!
That "Purple Box" is the HHB Radius 10.. It's also TL-Audio.. Same difference
Always happy to hear from you on Monday
and you as well!
This is Awesome bro I like your all Stuff It's Great
Cole Picks Vintage is always a roller coaster ride lol. So many times I've been a second away from making an impulse purchase but I was beat to it.
The AKG D190 at 40:45 is a sleeper. Full and warm sounding on EVERYTHING. I have bought four during the last year so now I cann let the secret out 😇
These guys are absolute fanatics. Sign me up
Mixing board (Trident) not needed in my opinion, but if it floats your boat go for it.
Those purple pre amps are really cool, I have a channel strip version. 🤘🏻
I love epic studios
HHB Radius 10. The secret preamp is an old prosumer unit you could buy from the AMS catalog in the 90s.
HHB RADIUS 10 and yes, they sound good!
I just scored two atlas mic stands for 20 bucks today so it's funny that came up. One of those things you never think about until you start tracking full kits and bands.
I believe those pre’s are HK audio. They were better known later on as TL audio, pretty popular pro/consumer grade outboard stuff.
I’d like to know more about AMP and Preston and the operation there… he mentioned that he will be making capsules. I think we’d all like a follow up video with Preston at his shop. For sure.
Any idea where i could buy those AMP mics?
Hey Eric this is Preston, I have been sputtering gold and rebuilding capsule for a while and now I am in the process of building a custom CNC to make backplates for all the microphones I build soon.
Nice place!
The tapes echos are always hilarious to me. I was given a 301 by a studio that was tossing one back in the 90s.. then I walked passed a 501 at a garage sale for $40.. (would have grabbed it, but didnt want to go to an ATM machine and I already had the 301 I never used)
I ended up loaning out the 301 back to the studio and never got it back.. ill stick with the Boss RE-20 instead.. tape is so noisy.
Looks like the big brother to the Trident Trimix I used to own
Perhaps I’m missing something, but how did they acquire the funding to build all of this so quickly? A guy who from his own description says that “this is all new to him” went from a single mic, two channel focusrite interface, and HS5’s to a hefty six figure studio over the course of the pandemic?
Not trying to knock the guy, congrats to him for sure, but I’m just really curious about the speed that this all came together for them. Many studio owners will spend a decade or more slowly building and adding piece by piece, but they somehow managed to do it in a year. How?
Regardless, great video as always, Andrew. Loving the series, keep em’ coming!
Well, you see, covid killed a lot of older relatives...
cliff this is a reasonable question a lot of the time! the biggest one i saw was the warren huart tour of a studio in 2018 called big bad (i think) where theres a 25 year old dude there who has wild gear and he mentions how his parents "shipped him a boston grand piano for his bday or something" and it's like ok this is a different planet for you. i still hope allll of these folks make a successful studio and make great records obviously. for context and disclosure i had a top 5 single (usa france uk etc) that i 50% co-wrote that made a lot of money that i either had to buy gear with or pay tax on (basically ratio was 1:1) so i bought loads of gear but it's still nothing like what these guys have amassed so you do have to wonder a bit. our industry has a lot of wealthy kids, kids of known musicians and old timers who bought their Sta Levels in thrift shops all talking up the value of wild gear and at some level we have to be aware of the fact that for many people (myself included) gear is an investment that may be additionally useful if the values go up............
Heck of a project studio. Very cool.
Just a side comment: the background music is a bit loud.
Preliking
Thanks for the heads up on the Tama mic stands. Just got a set and love them! They are built well and disappear from line of sight. Also, picked up a pair of On Stage Counterweights (CW-3) that fit perfectly on the black plastic handles on the end of the boom. Keep these videos coming! Great ideas in all your studio tours.
Great channel!!
Those "secret weapon" preamps are killer. They are pretty hard to find in the US/Canada though. I won't disclose the brand but even their late 90s tube consoles were fantastic (and hot). Thanks for the tour Andrew, you rock!
Thanks for watching!
It's puzzling how much hate these get online. I have one of their channel strips and it's ok.
@@JayBeBerg what were the secret preamps?
@@reggiechestnut TL Audio, there is an Indigo and Ivory series. There's better value these days
TL audio
Loving the TLA AUDIO 5001 MIC PRE’S 🤪 Not a big secret at all to be fair. Love the audio though very cosy.
best moment 43:15
so nice also to see folks just kinda working it out and being honest about that.
humorously the mystery preamps use the same circuit as ARTs as far as im aware so i guess your guess was good andrew.
joe meek killed his cleaner (i think) in the staircase of his studio in highgate london. he was having psychotic episodes and thought the cat in the local cemetery was talking to him. i think there's a betting shop there now or something like that
the story I also read is he killed his landlord and then himself. I hear a new world is some legendary shit
WOOOOOAOUUUUUU WOAHAHA
You are damn right
Dope. I love this space. How do these guys afford all this stuff? It took me years to get my sound collection right .
they were session musicians and they were good with their money lol
I wish I could hear some of these things in the reviews, great as always though !
You can if you join the membership on my site.
Yes. Joe Meek had a number one hit with Telstar. He created loads of highly original recording techniques in his house before the days of technology, and it drove his landlady to constsntly complain about the noise. He ended up shooting her dead.
GOT THE MEMBERSHIP (killer deal) and am already loving the bonus content. Your hotel room is awesome haha.
HHB Radius 10 4 channel tube preamp!!!!!!
HHB RADIUS 10 (the hidden mic pre's) they sound ok. had some, sold them
they were hyped about ten years ago so probs time for everyone to have another go
The purple preamps are the HHB Radius 10
The "mystery" tube preamp he mentioned looks to be a modded HHB pre-amp where he has replaced the tubes. The same company made the fatman ect. Pretty sure. Just figured I'd save some of yall a rabbit hole. 🧐
The "secret preamps" are TL audio 5001's.
or HHB radius 10, similar units
Stems!
Bam subscribed! Been waiting for this! Huge for you.
Spends 1 second on the most iconic piece of gear in the whole studio lol. The Echo Plex.
The preamps are the hhb radius I have one
Man be putting out films now
next tour is 14 hours long
@@AndrewMasters uhhhhh
From what I know, the Joe Meek comp was the 1st comp on Buss C in Michael Brauer Multi buss system.
No it was the SC2 v1.0.5, not the SC2.2. I have one and it sounds amazing ;)
@@damoufle7398 oh thanks for that Info!. I actually want to that also for guitars and any mid heavy instrument buss
@@gregrodrigueziii8075 I use it mainly for guitar bus with gentle slope, it really adds something to the sound. Works really good on drums in parallell too with stiffer slope (adds a lot of bass). Works crazy good on snare too. Lovelly piece of gear
Wow I've been looking for a UA-cam channel that did studio tours. This channel is awesome!
Welcome aboard!
Sweet dude... don't tell him I said that. Lol
mystery pre amps are TLA audio
I dunno if I’ve ever seen someone use a mic stand with that sennheiser mic before. It’s perfect for draping in front of your amp without a stand.
Yeah, i'm a stand guy
@@AndrewMasters all I could imagine reading that was Andrew masters in jojos bizarre adventure.
man this membership is awesome. best $60 I've spent all year lol
TLA aka TL Audio
you're welcome
I have several of the AKAI/ROBERTS reel-to-reels. I purchased them to be modded for the pres.
Problem is, haven't been able to locate anyone to modify them. Would appreciate anyone chiming in on who might be able to do so at a very reasonable cost.
Great use of only 700 Sq ft!
Leo Fender sold to CBS in 1965, it was finalized in January 1965, so anything before that is "pre- CBS", though its commonly known "pre-CBS" parts were leftover in a lot of 1965 guitars/ amps.
he sure has a lot of friends -__-
I like settings options on this video! Plz make it like this on all of your future videos!
HHB RADIUS 10 / TL Audio
hhb radius 10
144p ftw
HHB RADIUS 10
Got myself a new laptop ;)
Dont tell anyone but my kitchen is new to me
TLAudio?
I know what the preamps are just by the face plate design.. oh man I have problems..
And I just signed up to become a member
So he uses all his mics all the time
Physics says if you're only going to use 2 rack screws per unit, the top holes are not as important as the bottom ones. It's a gravity thing. Less torque.
Thank you physics
Gravity is a lie.
cant... or won't ;)
🤓👍
Anyone know what the purple pre's are?
HHB radius 10. Doesn't seem to have very good reviews on most of the forums when I looked it up
@@MattRadford thanks!
@@RUGBYmusic no problem! Happy to help
144p gang
hahaha nooooooo
"I think he killed somebody"
OH COOL
is he wearing a bootleg andrew masters t-shirt? :D
That Joe Meek story is definitely true. Joe stole a shotgun from his bassist, because he objected to him him hunting with it while on tour. He then killed his landlady with it when he got home. He was around Phil Spector quite a bit in his career, so maybe the murderous crazy was contagious ;)
I don't understand these people? I can't believe that having a rack full of equipment is more important today, THAN A PAIR OF GOOD LEVEL MONITORS. No matter the quality or quantity of all your EQs and compressors, if your monitors are compressing and coloring your signal, YOU WASTE YOUR MONEY.
TLA
No thank you for all you've shared.
this series is great but god they never talk about how tf they pay for all this stuff
