Following the success of “I Think I Just Shit In My Pants”, his 1964 hit that made a splash across the globe, Bobo Bojangles was looking to keep it up. After a night with the guys at a bar in Tijuana, Bobo found his inspiration. He immediately flew home and with a firm grip, set his pen ablaze to paper. The result, “Met Your Mama At A Donkey Show” was an immediate success and kept the Bobo train a-chuggin’. Famous singer and noted sea man Harry Belafonte took a stab at covering the tune in 1983 but eventually declined stating “The lyrics were just a tad salty for my taste and honestly, I found Bobo’s Tijuana story hard to swallow…. But he is one hell of an artist!” Bobo always said this song was his gift to the world and, quite unselfishly would always refuse the royalty check. That is until the last years of his life, when his addictions and lack of income forced him to take it in the end. Godspeed dear Bobo. Godspeed.

Mind you, him and his bandmates had just come off a three-day bender of whiskey and Turkish hash that blew the tops of their heads off. Still, on that fateful day, Bobo took his big black balls and smashed all racial barriers.

He opened with this joke: 'A farm lad was showing his country farm to a pretty lass visiting from Dallas. At one point, they stopped at a pasture where a bull was mounting a cow. The young lad turned to the girl and said, "I'd sure like fer me to be gittin a bit of what that old bull is gettin!" To which the girl replied, "Well go ahead! It's your cow!" Ha ha ha! Good times!

I believe it was in '64 or so that I first got a chance to see the legendary Bobo Bojangles.
I had been on a fishing trip to the old fish hole deep in the dark bush of Della Reese County when a local yokel by the name of Ben Jurkin wandered by putting up flyers about a Bobo show. He was nailin' 'em to the marsh reeds, not an easy thing to do at any time, and that day the wind was up, and he called over to me: "Hey, nekkid white boy. Good show goin' on at Huxtable High tonight. The legendary Bobo Bojangles will be playin' his shit, and you know you gonna like it".
Well, I pulled out of that wet hole and found my way to Huxtable High that evenin', and beheld the glory that was Bobo Bojangles. He had the audience spellbound as he described how his music got started, told us of the legends he had toured with, and then had us rockin' out to Met Your Mama at a Donkey Show (and its lesser-known followup "That Dog Won't Hunt (but He sure will Hump)".
It's sad now to think that we lost Bobo to a cruel and bizarre twist of fate, when a chicken bone got lodged in his throat (some media claimed it was a 'Rooster bone', and that 'Rooster' was a burly ex-con named Buster Highman)
    Good times, man.

Bobo was the man. I used to see him driving his '64 Coupe DeVille around the neighborhood handing out autographed 8X10 glossy photos of himself. Everyone loved Bobo and we all followed his career, watching every time he was on Ed Sullivan, American Band Stand, The Tonight Show, and Face The Nation. All of the R&B 'greats' were inspired by Bobo's music and his 'deer in the headlights' facial expressions. Truly a one-of-a-kind unique performer that was often imitaded but never duplicated. Motown lost their greatest rising star when Bobo gave up music and took an executive position with Bandini Fertilizer.

He had had a successful career appearing in "notorious" stage shows alongside the Havana Superman in Cuba . After escaping to the USA during the Cuban revolution he began appearing in "adult" films under the name of the "HoofMeister"... It was believed that his death may have been caused by Equine AIDS although at the time this disease was unknown. Bobo Bojangles fount me when I was born by the river, in a lil tent. He rasied me up for a few years. Treated me as his own. He wasn't singin yet. He would make us fishin poles outta sugar cane poles. We would catch catfish and mullets and never went hongry. One day Bobo put holes in the handle of his pole and started blowin into it. Beautiful music came out of the pole and poo came out his pants. He immediately started writing his songs and playin the cane pole flute. He cleaned up in the river and went on to be one of the most beloved figures in music evah. He is the first person to evah say " Give a boy a fish and he'll eat fo a day. Teach a boy to fish and he'll eat foevah and he gone clean and cook mines too." He saved my life. Bobo Bojangles, two times Nobel Piece Prize Winner. Love you foevah Play Pops!

@noneone2u - I am SO happy to hear your story!! Though I never go to meet this amazing man, I have heard so many stories about the love and kindness he showed others, especially complete strangers!! I always kept a picture of him on my bedroom wall, right next to the President and Mother Theresa as a reminder for me every day of the goodness that exists in this world!!! Bobo's music made a differnce in my life, but that pales in comparison to the amazing love that he gave to you from the get go!!!

My story about Bobo Bojangles is happy and sad. My white mom was you can say "like to have a good time". Before I was born, she cheated on my father with a black friend of his and ended up pregnant. After the baby boy was born, she gave him to a black share cropper family in Mississippi who named him Bobo. A couple years later I was born. Me and Bobo became best friends. Neither of us knew that we were half brothers. Bobo was always making up songs while we picked cotton for a dollar a day. He couldn't write so he would tell me the lyrics to his songs and I would write them down. His big break came when he sang his song "I think I shit my pants" at the county fair. A record producer heard the song and brought Bobo to Detroit and recorded it.I listened to his songs on the radio growing up. Bobo had it all, money, women, alcohol and unfortunately drugs which was his down fall. Motown and the world lost a legend when Bobo was found dead face first in a bowl of blow and with a empty bottle of Jack next to him. RIP bother!!!

Disco put an end to Bobo’s run of hits although his one effort for this market Mama Shakes her Cakes ( Every Time She Skates ) was a small hit in Belgium. Hearing that his old hits were still in demand in the clubs of Northern England he moved to the town of Wigan in 1982. Performing alongside the likes of Edwin Starr and the Doolies his locally recorded ‘ I Quit My Grits for Fish and Chips’ made the lower part of Britain’s top 30 in 1985.

Rumor has it that Bobo Bojangles was so grateful to the donkeyed-woman--the main act--that he took her to the music recording studio to try and give her a go at a new career.
Didn't work out for her, but it DID work out for her granddaughter, a little act you might know as "Cardi B".

Bobo made a tour in Sweden in 1965 before his big hit ”Shit in my…” made him famous. He stayed over at my parents newly build house in Skattkärr because the local hotel refused him to stay there because Bobo did not agree to the socialist manners that was forced upon people at that time in Värmland, Sweden. My nickname is Bobbo after him. He was very keen on go fishing in the nearby lake Gapern in my cousins boat.
