@Get Overlt Actually, Barbara's vocal wasn't live, it was pre-recorded and if you watch her mouth, you can tell that she is lip- synching. Her voice wasn't great but it was alright, and Artie and Steve knew how to get the best out of her in the studio. The band really DIDN'T need her inclusion, and-to be honest-her presence wasn't welcomed by either Bill or Bob. If you really listen to Bob here, you can tell that he also doesn't have a great voice. His voice is quite flat and not emotive. As a singer, Susan sounds no better (or worse) than any other kid her age here would. As a kid, she sure wasn't a great singer, and-to be honest-she still isn't. On the other hand, Bill Cowsill really did have a GREAT voice.
@@shirleypena4133 I guess I should have qualified what I meant by "great." I stand by my opinion. Is Barbara Cowsill a diva solo recording artist? No. But she absolutely can carry a tune, put it across with a nice vibrato, and all band members stated that she was the one who sang with them since they were little kids, and taught them how to harmonize. So, kudos to her for that. No, the teenage boys never wanted their mother in their rock band (and the feeling was mutual on Barbara's part).. but because she was their mother, NOT because she couldn't sing. You didn't mention John and Barry, but they are inarguably spectacular here... not accounting for their ages, as their voices and instrumental skills were still developing. As for 8-year-old Susan, I don't know how many little kids you work with, but most cannot carry a tune, OR project their voices. For being with the group for one month at the time of this recording, she sang beautifully! Again, not a solo, big-hit recording artist as an adult, but most certainly a solid, working musician. Billy, indeed, had a great voice --- and, as an ensemble of mostly underage performers, their pitch, rhythm, harmonies, cues, enthusiasm, and professionalism ARE great, and I stand by the term.
I get so homesick listening to the Cowsills. They make me miss yesterday so much. Being young. Playing with my siblings and friends. Laughing. Dreaming. Feeling new and possible. So nostalgic. So wonderfully pulling. Where's that technicolor time portal? ❤

@mark lee You mean BILL had an amazing voice. He was also easily the band's best songwriter and musician, as well as the only band member who later became a successful producer, and founded/lead other outstanding bands, among them the SUPERB Canadian band The Blue Shadows. @Thomas Dahlquist John didn't progress as a drummer as he became an adult. He also failed to establish a unique sound/technique for himself, which is so vital for the continued success of any drummer. Lucky for him, none of The Beach Boys' songs rely on being a really skilled drummer, so he has been a good fit for the band all these years.
They are so supremely talented....I come back and rewatch it regularly. For an update listen to the "Benefit Concert for Billy Cowsill" from September 2004. They are still as amazing as ever. ❤️

Pretty good. Why didn't I ever hear about the Cowsills when I was growing up? I only found out about them a few days ago when someone told me they provided the basis for the Partridge Family TV show.
@@Jackretro I always thought the "flower girl" song was an anthem of the 1960s hippies. Turns out it was by the "clean cut" Cowsills. I wouldn't compare the Cowsills to Yes or the Beatles, but they had some nice harmonies.
It would depend on your age. I never knew the PF was based on this group until many years later either. It surprised me too....I figured the sitcom idea was the product of some fiction dreamt up by a writer or producer then pitched to ABC.

John’s killing the drums on Reach Out 👍🥰😎 Love Barry’s Mr Postman, little Susan (her voice is so big though). ALL of them are talented and with good voices! I would have given anything just to see how one episode conversion The Partridge Family to The Cowsill’s. If they ALL could have played, would they have been open for a different name for tv show - even one of their choosing? Wonder what that be?
The first "band" version of the Cowsills consisted of Billy, Barry, John & Bob, who gigged around Rhode Island from their Newport home base. It's said they were super-tight in clubs....and, of course, they had, in essence, four lead vocalists and a strong sense of harmony singing. I read somewhere they did superb covers of Beatles songs, including "Paperback Writer," for instance. I'd really love to be able to go back to when they were doing clubs like Bambi's in Newport and see the quartet live. I'd have been blown away. The Cowsills were...and are....great singers & players because they had the work ethic going and they loved what they were doing, which is the most important component to becoming gigging musicians. .

wow does this take me back. Susan and I are about the same age and way back then I had the biggest crush on her, as a matter of fact she was my very first crush. Oh what times they were way back then.
I wish that their alcohol father and manager Bud Cowsill had truly known how talented and great his kids were. I don't know how many people know that the old show "The Partridge Family" was based off of this group.
Those kids could really sing, I think their dad held them back from being bigger. When they were on the Ed Sullivan show, the dad chewed out the Sullivan people and caused them to cancel future appearances. The dad was their manager which was a big mistake because they would have been a bigger success without his hot temper.
The dad actually threatened to kill Ed Sullivan's crew because there was a 90 lapse of audio; Sullivan's crew were notorious for being technically incompetent. That is one reason the Door's insisted on having Paul Rothchild on the soundboard when they played in 1967.
Father Bud, as his own kids have divulged, micro-managed the group and used his power to cut some of the older brothers from whatever gig they had as a way to play head trips and keep them in line. According to the Cowsill's documentary, Father Bud was a major control freak and even tried to defile his own daughter when he was drunk. Sad sad excuse for a dad. Heart-breaking. All of those children were so talented and willing to please their parents, but were abused and taken advantage of. I hope I'm not bursting anyone's bubble but it's all laid out in, "Family Band: The Cowsills Story" released in 2011.
@@429np True. They are great. I didn't appreciate them when they hit the chartsin the late '60s. I was a hipster doofus musical snob. But I've come to appreciate their musical abilities-and what they weathered as a family is nothing short of miraculous.

He also failed to establish a unique sound/technique for himself, which is so vital for the continued success of any drummer. Lucky for him, none of The Beach Boys' songs rely on being a really skilled drummer, so he has been a good fit for the band all these years.
@@shirleypena4133 But he was a better drummer than Ringo Starr, I bet
Such great talent. They played so well and sang like they were doing it forever.
Thanks.....
Have seen them live and they sent chills down my back as soon as they began singing
They are so supremely talented....I come back and rewatch it regularly. For an update listen to the "Benefit Concert for Billy Cowsill" from September 2004. They are still as amazing as ever. ❤️
Such a talented family :) REAL MUSIC .
I was 11. Loved Barry. I had his poster on my bedroom wall.
I’m with you just discovered the Cowsills what a great band seems a pity that bill and Barry are no longer with us they just made fantastic music especially the rain the park and other things ( the flower girl song ) these fantastic groups only come along once and the Cowsills were one of them groups 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
DAMN!!! They were very talented!!
I never realized how talented this Band was.....They went through Hell growing up. In retrospect they were amazing...and the surviving members still are! My best to them!
The boys all had great voices, and Susan developed hers over time too. Very talented family.
That haircut is back in style now. Talented family! Thanks for the footage!
very talented family love the Cowsills feel bad their father was a jerk to them ... RIP Billy Richard Barry And Barbara ...
Wow, great stuff. Classic! Forgot how good the Cowsills were. I miss these days badly.
Excellent Renditions !!!!
The first group I was in love with!
Pretty good. Why didn't I ever hear about the Cowsills when I was growing up? I only found out about them a few days ago when someone told me they provided the basis for the Partridge Family TV show.
maybe because they weren't that good ?
@@Jackretro I always thought the "flower girl" song was an anthem of the 1960s hippies. Turns out it was by the "clean cut" Cowsills. I wouldn't compare the Cowsills to Yes or the Beatles, but they had some nice harmonies.
It would depend on your age. I never knew the PF was based on this group until many years later either. It surprised me too....I figured the sitcom idea was the product of some fiction dreamt up by a writer or producer then pitched to ABC.
I am the same I've not heard about them till a few days ago.
They are so talented
The father was vicious man to his children.
He could not tolerate the son who playing drums it must be heartbreaking for him.
@@wandarask8444 .....the selfishness of one or both parents can be astonishing. My ex mother in law favored her youngest son to such a degree that it regularly set off my former husband who was the oldest. A lifetime of him acting up just to get attention while battling low self esteem--among other demons--and trying to buy people's love and loyalty never much concerned my ex MIL....unless it made HER look bad. The damage to a child's mental health can't be completely repaired and leaves permanent emotional scars. There are godawful people out there who had no business ever reproducing.
Superb harmonious musical family!
John and Barry wow, I had a crush on those two guys.
Amazing group. The drummer is great
It’s amazing how talented they all were. Such a sad story.
John is KILLING those drums! So much obvious joy. I love watching him play!
Btw, where’s Paul?
Paul didn't join until later, but I don't know why.
They still are amazing singers
The Cowsills were...and are....great singers & players because they had the work ethic going and they loved what they were doing, which is the most important component to becoming gigging musicians.
.
Too wordy
Not in my opinion.
@user-oh5uq8kg1l Why are you even here then?
This is some awesome talent.. so entertaining.. ty for posting
Very talented.

wow does this take me back. Susan and I are about the same age and way back then I had the biggest crush on her, as a matter of fact she was my very first crush. Oh what times they were way back then.
Mis favoritos desde niña....me las sabía todas y las bailaba y bailaba
The father was a monster . The family never recovered .
I disagree...they have survived and the surviving siblings are thriving in their careers and lives!
John became the drummer for The Beach Boys
Sweet Memories of my Childhood !!!
I love this group.
that kid is a bad ass drummer
He's now the drummer for the Beach Boys. John was around 12 yrs old, when this was recorded, he was born in 1956.
@@usmc-veteran73-77 cool thanx
Y tú has de ser muy bueno
Robert Plant was a huge fan and Jimmy Page has said if there was no Cowsills there never would have been a Led Zeppelin
I can see that
I Never Knew they were a Family. They were Either Mismanaged Or Poorly Marketed Because They Were MUCH BETTER than they Ever got Credit for!!!
John is a drum assassin!! Where is Paul?
Paul joined the group later.
@@IMCcanTWEESTED Not busting my bubble. They are great.
@@429np True. They are great. I didn't appreciate them when they hit the chartsin the late '60s. I was a hipster doofus musical snob. But I've come to appreciate their musical abilities-and what they weathered as a family is nothing short of miraculous.
Paul was the last to join even though he was older than Barry John or Susan.
For people who don't know this is the Ed Sullivan Show, since it doesn't say anywhere on this video I thought I'd give the info. I don't know if this is the dress rehearsal or the show itself, maybe somebody knows.
Love this group...then the Partiage Family did one of their songs with Shirly Jones taking the lead..Both awesome...love David Cassidy...show taken from this talented family
Good god what a talented bunch.

*Wow, increible, hermosa musica.*

Wow!!! So good!
The poise and rhythm of little Susan.
Excellent take. Great voice(s)
they are really good such a sad story life is so hard
Wonderful!♥️🎼🎶🎵
An interesting miscellany of songs--I was not prepared for the Don GIbson country classic! The group is just ADORABLE here. Nothing slick and overproduced--just their talented selves.
