      I've been watching Beach Boy videos with John Cowsill in them. He played keyboards and drums and sang lead on a few songs. He was so much more fun to watch than the actual Beach Boys. Aside from playing the instruments perfectly, his vocals were spot-on! What made him so fun to watch was his energy. As this 10 or 11-year-old kid in this video playing the drums like he was sitting on a rocket, the 50+ year-old John played those drums with just as much energy and enthusiasm. Yes, he is certainly underrated!

      @Get Overlt Actually, Barbara's vocal wasn't live, it was pre-recorded and if you watch her mouth, you can tell that she is lip- synching. Her voice wasn't great but it was alright, and Artie and Steve knew how to get the best out of her in the studio. The band really DIDN'T need her inclusion, and-to be honest-her presence wasn't welcomed by either Bill or Bob. If you really listen to Bob here, you can tell that he also doesn't have a great voice. His voice is quite flat and not emotive. As a singer, Susan sounds no better (or worse) than any other kid her age here would. As a kid, she sure wasn't a great singer, and-to be honest-she still isn't. On the other hand, Bill Cowsill really did have a GREAT voice.

    • @getoverit2789
      @getoverit2789 2 роки тому +12

      @@shirleypena4133 I guess I should have qualified what I meant by "great." I stand by my opinion. Is Barbara Cowsill a diva solo recording artist? No. But she absolutely can carry a tune, put it across with a nice vibrato, and all band members stated that she was the one who sang with them since they were little kids, and taught them how to harmonize. So, kudos to her for that. No, the teenage boys never wanted their mother in their rock band (and the feeling was mutual on Barbara's part).. but because she was their mother, NOT because she couldn't sing. Adding Mom and little sister was their dad's idea. Next, Bob is not flat. Again, not a solo recording artist type, but certainly a solid, working musician. You didn't mention John and Barry, but they are inarguably spectacular here... not accounting for their ages, as their voices and instrumental skills were still developing. As for 8-year-old Susan, I don't know how many little kids you work with, but most cannot carry a tune, OR project their voices. For being with the group for one month at the time of this recording, she sang beautifully! Again, not a solo, big-hit recording artist as an adult, but most certainly a solid, working musician. Billy, indeed, had a great voice --- and, as an ensemble of mostly underage performers, their pitch, rhythm, harmonies, cues, enthusiasm, and professionalism ARE great, and I stand by the term.

      @mark lee You mean BILL had an amazing voice. He was also easily the band's best songwriter and musician, as well as the only band member who later became a successful producer, and founded/lead other outstanding bands, among them the SUPERB Canadian band The Blue Shadows. After their dirtbag father fired Bill, none of Bill's siblings was capable of stepping into Bill's shoes, and that's what caused the band to dissolve. Susan has made a modest living as a studio singer, but her career went no further. The only one who's enjoyed some success post-Cowsills band was John, but only because he became the drummer for The Beach Boys. Check out the late Bill Cowsill's band The Blue Shadows. The music that Bill Cowsill created with that band will knock your socks off!

      @Thomas Dahlquist John didn't progress as a drummer as he became an adult. He also failed to establish a unique sound/technique for himself, which is so vital for the continued success of any drummer. Lucky for him, none of The Beach Boys' songs rely on being a really skilled drummer, so he has been a good fit for the band all these years.

    The first "band" version of the Cowsills consisted of Billy, Barry, John & Bob, who gigged around Rhode Island from their Newport home base. It's said they were super-tight in clubs....and, of course, they had, in essence, four lead vocalists and a strong sense of harmony singing. I read somewhere they did superb covers of Beatles songs, including "Paperback Writer," for instance. I'd really love to be able to go back to when they were doing clubs like Bambi's in Newport and see the quartet live. I'd have been blown away.
    The Cowsills were...and are....great singers & players because they had the work ethic going and they loved what they were doing, which is the most important component to becoming gigging musicians.

  • @more444store6
    @more444store6 2 роки тому +16

    Those kids could really sing, I think their dad held them back from being bigger. When they were on the Ed Sullivan show, the dad chewed out the Sullivan people and caused them to cancel future appearances. The dad was their manager which was a big mistake because they would have been a bigger success without his hot temper.

    • @steventurner3036

      The dad actually threatened to kill Ed Sullivan's crew because there was a 90 lapse of audio; Sullivan's crew were notorious for being technically incompetent. That is one reason the Door's insisted on having Paul Rothchild on the soundboard when they played in 1967.

      Father Bud, as his own kids have divulged, micro-managed the group and used his power to cut some of the older brothers from whatever gig they had as a way to play head trips and keep them in line. According to the Cowsill's documentary, Father Bud was a major control freak and even tried to defile his own daughter when he was drunk. Sad sad excuse for a dad. Heart-breaking. All of those children were so talented and willing to please their parents, but were abused and taken advantage of. I hope I'm not bursting anyone's bubble but it's all laid out in, "Family Band: The Cowsills Story" released in 2011.
