  • These Sonoran Hot Dogs may be our new favorite hot dogs to make! Wrapped in bacon, perfectly cooked on the griddle, and topped with homemade pinto beans, pico de gallo, and a simple sour cream and mayo mixture, this Sonoran Hot Dog recipe takes the classic hot dog to another level!
When I first heard about the popular Southwest hot dog, I immediately thought “Yuck”, who would put those Mexican ingredients on a bacon-wrapped hot dog? But then I tried them and I was hooked!
    For the Homemade Pinto Beans:
    - 16 oz bag dry pinto beans - Soak the dry beans overnight in a large bowl of water, rinse and drain the next day
    - 1 onion, small diced
    - 3 cloves garlic, rough chopped
    - 1 smoked ham hock (Usually available in the meat department of the grocery store)
    - 4 cups chicken stock
    - 2 cups water
    - 2 bay leaves
    - 1 jalapeno, seeded and small diced
    - 1/2 teaspoon Mexican oregano
    - 1 tablespoon ground cumin
    - 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    - 1/2 tablespoon salt
    - Add all ingredients to a large Crock Pot with the rinsed and drained beans. Cook on high for about 6-7 hours. You can allow the beans to cool a bit and refrigerate overnight, and reheat in a pan on the stovetop the next day for the Sonoran hot dogs.

Greetings from the Texas panhandle! I made this tonight and it was fantastic! I also noticed that the bacon was sort of lost in all the other flavors. I’m not sure if you were trying to set Amy up for some sophomoric humor with the “just the tip” line, but kudos to her for not taking the bait. If I’m totally reading that wrong, please forgive. I teach high school sooo….

Looks great. Have not made a Sonoran Dog in several years. I need to change that. I am a griller guy. But am wanting to get into the griddle game to now. I have a folder on my work drive. It contains a lot of tips and tricks on how I do what I do and be the best at what I do.I am in the process of deleting that folder. That will be August or September when completely deleted. Then I am done. My retirement gift to myself will be a Black Stone Flat Top. Thank you for these videos. I learn a lot.

I just introduced our friends here in the RGV to Sonoran hotdogs a few weeks back. I cooked mine on my pellet grill though and used Costco 1/4+ pound all beef hot dogs. For buns I used bolillo rolls, widely available here in the Valley. I smeared refried beans on the buns for those that were “adventuresome” and they agreed, the beans were a great addition. Anyway, I’ll watch your video now and see how I could’ve improved my own version. FYI our first time eating them was in Tucson. They are great!

OH BOY, who-da thunk-it!!! This will be at the top of the TA-EET list. Glad you brought this idea back home with you. I literally can eat pinto beans 3 meals a day and will be eating them on a hotdog (which I detest) just because I remember how good they tasted when I was young 70 years plus ago. Plus with the Indian Fry Bread that doc says is not good for me at this age. I'm looking for a different doctor. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.

Happy 76th, Amy! These are totally different, but look awesome! I'm not a huge bean fan, but for me maybe refried beans might work. Also, my neighbor just got a Blackstone. He asked me if I knew anything about them. So, I quickly said NO and ran off (J/K) But I did send him to your page, and Adam & Brett. We'll elevate the world 1 griddle at a time!

Hey Neil, since you can't do the direct heat ribs. I have another suggestion. I saw a UA-cam video today. The guy took Captain Crunch and pounded it into a powder. He took Tuna and cut them into maybe1inch by 1 inch and 6 inches long. Oiled, seasoned and coated with the cereal. Seared all sides quickly and sliced into bite size pieces. Then served over Japanese mayo and Siracha. Looked good. I would like to see your take.

Baked beans with Hotdogs and Bacon would be a hit so why not the other way around? If you like the Black label bacon you'd like Wright and believe it or not Walmart's brand of thick sliced bacon they have in the 3lb packs is pretty good too. If you're trying to save calories Non-fat Greek yogurt (from a premium brand) is an awesome sub for sour cream! BTW it was great to see the Lady behind the camera! I was wondering if you were going to make Her like "Wilson" the neighbor in "Tool time" and have something blocking most of Her in every shot. lol Happy Birthday Special Lady!

I would like to hear the restaurants you loved here in the greater Phoenix area. And there is a Sonoran dog truck on Bell near 28th street that is supposed to be pretty good for any other locals. Nice work on creating a Tucson original! And yeah, the Indian fry bread is pretty dope. I think they were more popular when I was a kid and most of the times it was served with honey and powdered sugar.

Try not cutting the bolillo bun through all the way to the ends. Then stuff the hot dog down into the bun. And I’d guess the white sauce was probably Mexican Crema which is similar to what you made - a runnier version of sour cream with some lime added. We added or I had available, similar condiments for my friends to add, such as diced onion, jalapeños, Pico de gallo plus some shredded Mexican Blend cheese.
