    I agree they should have removed Stepin or had him killed while raging against Logain. There are so many better ways they could have explained the warder bond. I think it could have been explained more fully with little snippets over multiple seasons. The mystery of who is the dragon though… well my friends and family that never read the books loved it. I do think it did a good job of keeping interest of nonreaders. I love the idea of Logain as the main antagonist! I’ve thought of so many little changes that would have improved the season, but that never crossed my mind! Looking forward to your next video!

      I totally agree! It was good visual storytelling but Moiraine and Lan's relationship wasn't really tested this season. I think the exposition about the bond shouldn't have been a priority for the first series.
      I'm glad your friends and family enjoyed the show. I know a few non-book readers who had a fun time watching it also, and it's great to have so many new members join the community.

    Watching this video i can agree mostly with the changes, but really yes the book does make us assume rand in the dragon reborn and there are enough hints, but as ba'alzamon is not sure which of the 3 is the dragon i did feel the mystery of which is could have been used to more effect, keeping the dagger story arc similar, more focus on the wolf brother, and letting us know the fever dream would have worked. put rand and mat in the store room with the woman and have the lightning hit leavening us to think it has to be one of them, then we see perrin wolf out and go full blood lust destroying two white cloaks ad wolves race in killing others. Now we as viewers are like is it him?

    Your note that Tam's fever ramblings should have been mentioned before 107 made me realize, they only needed part of the ramblings or a single line of dialog referencing the ramblings after the fact to make their point!
    If he, say, only mentioned Dragonmount/"a snow-capped mountain" but not a baby, that could be hint enough when combined with when Rand recognizes Dragonmount in 105.

    • @ElliotEdits
      @ElliotEdits  2 роки тому +1

      I agree. The ramblings should have been far from coherent when we first hear them. Just a small hint so the audience can put both pieces together at the end, instead of them being given both pieces at the same time!

      @@ElliotEdits he didn't even need to go all the way to reveal Rand's adoption, just "snow...mountain...died in childbirth" or some such, enough for us to think ooh interesting backstory without specifically tying it to Rand. Maybe even leads to speculation that Tam found the Dragon during some war long ago. Then the reveal in 107 would be "oh shit, that was Rand!".

    1:00 This is more than a day late and a dollar short but they could have made 8 episodes work. I remember watching the modern update of Sherlock Holmes as well as some K dramas. I remember Sherlock being only 3 episodes a season but those 3 episodes had a run time of 90 minutes. some K-dramas were the same with episodes as short as 50 minutes to as long as an hour and twenty. The show runners were not limited to a 45-50 minute run time. That was a limitation they placed on themselves since they still think in network TV terms. They could have made each episode it's own movie ala "LOTHR" style with each episode as short as an hour or as long as 90 minutes or maybe a bit more. Keeping with Amazons penchant of releasing an episode a week with the exception of the premier in which they drop 3 had the series been good and an actual faithful adaptation they could have successfully done the first novel in full with possibly the last 1 or 2 episodes being part of book 2 or featured two episodes of a flash back that consisted of a new spring. Of course this is only possible if they had a capable showrunner and writing staff which the Wheel of time clearly didn't.
    I also think you're far too apologetic with regards to this "Show". It was poorly written and in some places downright offensive with regards to its misandry and the term "adaptation." This is not an adaptation but rather a show based on the Wheel of Time, which is what they should have said rather than misrepresent what it in fact is.

    • @ElliotEdits
      @ElliotEdits  Рік тому

      I think the show runners were likely limited to a run time per episode. It may have been more flexible than broadcast TV, but budgets and filming schedules would have put constraint on how long scripts could be. I agree though, that time could have been better utilized.

    @asmrlistening5945 2 роки тому +1

    Most of these suggestions I wildly disagree with. Having the first episode be almost entirely devoid of context with just stuff being vaguely hinted at =a recipe for new audiences being bored and confused.
    Having the characters be 'young and innocent' teenagers would just make the entire thing feel like a CW show. Characters like Mat going from a bratty teenager giggling about badgers, to a general leading armies in like a year was unrealistic anyway, frankly. The characterization of them in Book 1 doesn't really match how they are in most of the series.
    Plenty of new viewers also *did* solve that it was Rand, so it wasn't that vague. Having it be any more obvious would have taken away any tension there was in the season, because audiences would just be waiting around for him to catch up to what they already new. Not everything needs to be a 'mystery' for viewers to solve anyway... It was more satisfying watching Rand deal with coming to terms with it, than having the answer spoon-fed to us.

    Bravo. 1) I agree with almost everything you said here. 2) Thank you for giving your input in respectful fashion. 3) I still liked season 1, but it could have been so much better. 4) Here’s hoping they learned some things about what works and what doesn’t as they write subsequent seasons. 5) The opening scene with Moiraine’s monologue was added later. I wonder if Amazon corporates demanded something like this to minimize confusion. Alternatively, maybe they decided to (inadequately) mimic the Galadriel narration at the opening of The Fellowship of the Ring (which was done masterfully).

    • @ElliotEdits
      @ElliotEdits  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I didn't actually know that the monologue was added on, but it doesn't surprise me. Studios can be too scared of creating intrigue and make things overly obvious - like when they forced Ridley Scott to include a voice over in Blade Runner.

    • @wotfanedit
      @wotfanedit 2 роки тому +2

      For a bit of context and interesting insight here: I cut the monolog out of the fan edit and opened the film with the Blood Snow instead. A work colleague (with zero prior book or series knowledge) wrote me this verbatim after watching the first hour:
      "It was great, definitely has me hooked!
      I didn’t get the plot completely in terms of the objective of the dark, or why she was after the 4 of them. So my brother showed me this intro bit that was Rosamund Pike talking about how men destroyed everything and the Sidai were the ones left to find the child. But once I saw that, I followed the story much better"
      I think Amazon was right to insist on an added scene upfront to create clarity, but I think the showrunners were hamstrung having already shot the other scenes and quickly roughed out an exposition dump. It would have been more natural if planned upfront like Elliott's proposed opener (or fuck it, just give us Dragonmount and play the opening like the books).

I feel that it still holds together very well - which is at least a proof of concept that with some writing and shooting changes to the original script you could have delivered a clean arc for the relationship in less beats (hence time) and made it feel more impactful.

  • @wotfanedit
    @wotfanedit 2 роки тому +2

    Thanks for this in depth video! I had a similar thought process to yours when coming up with my fan edit. In some cases I was able to "rewrite" scenes in the edit, in other scenes it was not possible. I'll comment here as I go along:
    4:22 fully agreed. I tried a cut in my fan edit that snipped this dialog out, however the rest of the season keeps referencing back to the fact that the EF5 knows it's one of them, so it was not possible to extract without butchering a major through-line in the show
    6:03 Agreed. I cut out significant chunks of the Rand-Egewene arc and it hardly impacts the resolution of their storyline
    7:08 I cut the Logain army battle in such a way that it focuses on Stepin's berserk rage when Karene dies, and kills him in the cave assault. No need to further exposit the Warder bond, the explanation that's left in the fan edit conveys the gist of it (although I am currently tinkering with a v2 that gives it a bit more breathing room)
    7:56 without being able to create new scenes, I cut out a lot of the red herrings and the scenes that focus so heavily on the DR mystery. It is certainly present in the fan edit, but it isn't the central narrative that the film is structured around. Also made several tweaks to how the information is revealed so that Rand's "outing" as the DR feels more natural and earned.
    9:32 You should check out The Dusty Wheel's fan edit clips of their proposed season cold open - they position Logain front and center as a Dragon candidate. It doesn't go as far as your rewrite (looking forward to the next episode!) but it's compelling. I'm tinkering further with my fan edit film and will probably think of doing something similar to position Logain as an antagonist for the first part of the film when I finish v2.
