So not many have pointed this out yet, but back in the medieval age there was a popular type of slapstick puppet show called a "Punch and Judy" about a man (Punch) acting abusively toward his wife (Judy) and others. his catchphrase was "that's the way you do it". So Hugo is a pretty clear reference to this, even repeating the catchphrase at the start. Edit: turns out still a thing in UK. I did not know this/am not English lol
too right, there are many references to Punch in the game, from paintings and posters of the titular character to more subtle hints, an abusive husband acting out against his wife and baby, bats and clubs as a weapon, a doctor being one of the characters only to fall prey who was a character in the original puppet show, a hanging where in the puppet show punch tricks the hangman sent to hang punch for his crimes into hanging himself and in the game he fools others to think the doctor was abusing him making him take his own life, even his alter ego Hugo Punch is a nod to that, Hugo for his father and Punch being the main character of Punch and Judy, a man with a large head using bats and sticks and clubs to hit others which is a common weapon of choice for Mr. Punch to bash the other puppets but unlike the puppets who are made of wood Hugo's victims are actual real people
She can't help it. And even if she knew about Jimmy's behavior and all she'd still protect his son no matter what cause she love his son so deeply. Not to mention after her husband "situation" towards Jimmy. I mean come on.... If you were in Rose's shoes would you be willing to hand over your child to the police, even after knowing about the killing he did?
I really love how realistic this game is, not just from the animation, but also from how the characters act. I know most of us are mad for Rose for not understanding Jimmy's problem, her actions are actually realistic. From when Jimmy was abused for 2 years since he was born, Rose felt really guilty since she wasn't doing anything about it. Its only natural for Rose for siding with him because of her guilt. Some games would make Rose move on from what happened.
True. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if this was inspired from a real life story. A woman talking about how she and her friends got trapped in a hotel with a serial killer and the woman had to free them somehow. Although the ghost part might sound fake and unbelievable but who knows🤷🏻♂️
As an aside, going off the info on Jimmy's birth certificate suggests this all takes place in (or near to) the town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, which is actually a nice seaside town...though if there is an actual Seaview Hotel there I'll be keeping well away. Plus that final scene in the ending is super depressing: Maya and her friends got away, but poor Jimmy is sobbing for it all to end, only for Hugo to laugh at him and make it clear that he's the one in charge.

in the menu of the game, there's a section called 'Jimmy & DID' (Dissociative identity disorder) the developers wanted to make clear that Jimmy does NOT have DID. Wiki fandom: "The developer has stressed that Jimmy does not have Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder. The note about Jimmy and DID can be read on the game's main menu."
@@alice_mation there will, if you look at markipliers last video of this game, in the comment section you can see that the the developer of this game said he’s been working on a sequel for 4 years now
Oh thank goodness. I'm getting tired of DID being an easy trope to fall back on. It demonizes mental illness, specifically DID which is already heavily stigmatized. Good on the developer for not using that trope.
I can't believe how you all forget that Rose was the one who CALLED Doctor Bose to treat Jimmy. Oh you think it's all her fault? Hear me out. Rose is a traumatized mother who saw her husband beating her own child almost to death, and her only option to save Jimmy was to kill her husband. Of course she isn't good at making the right decisions, she's also mentally damaged by all that had happened! It's strange that Rose didn't believe Doctor Bose? Remember that Jimmy is Rose her everything. She would move mountains for her son. No wonder she chose his side when Jimmy told her Doctor Bose was inappropriate with him. She literally couldn't handel the thought that she put Jimmy in danger again, just like with his father. I agree she might had to listen to Harvey more, but her unstable mental state explains for me why she didn't. Good game, but it handeled Rose's character extremely bad in my opinion. Now it looks like she's the one and only reason everything went wrong with Jimmy. Jimmy's FATHER is the reason everything went wrong with Jimmy! He is Jimmy's killer-side and beated him because of his mental insanity. Rose is Jimmy's very loving mother who saved her child from his father, but as a result of the murder, ended up mentally unstable and incapable of making the right choices for her and her son.
Blaming something like this in one person, is ridiculously simplistic. So what? The dad abuses and beats him (and also possibly possess him) and we're going to blame the mum? Well done.

The way it has to hold all of Jimmy’s hair under it makes him look like he has a Pennywise forehead. And since he has the hair on the sides, that’s extra scary.
@@bungiecrimes7247 The reason why he is possessed makes a lot of sense. I don’t understand how that’s lazy? Even if he wasn’t possessed, we would still feel bad for all the constant abuse he went through as a kid. The writing in this game was not even close to lazy.
It seems like you forgot to read the 'Jimmy and DID' commentary added to the menu after beating the game. In it the developer addresses the harmful dual personality stereotype people seem to recognise in the whole Jimmy vs. Hugo Punch storyline. He actually explains that Hugo is more like a seemingly heredatery darkness that has grown within Jimmy after witnessing the abuse by and murder of his father. (The qoute at the end of the game does make a lot more sense when you view it like that. If you read the wikipedia page of the guy who said it, you'll understand the connection for sure.) Plus you should check out the previouse game from the developer. It explains the little black mirror and could give you new insights into the whole 'The fire has been burning down the Halls for generations.' line... (It's a detective game, so it's not really content material, but it does look like the two games take place in the same universe.)
I actually have a theory about how Jimmy likes being on the second floor. I think it's because of the fact that his mother died there. When Rose killed Hugo, his spirit was angry at her but he couldn't really do anything to her other than physiologically torture her through her son. But whenever Jimmy was actually in control, he and Rose were quite close to the point he didn't want to hurt her by hurting others and tried to drown himself. So when she killed herself, her spirit would always go back to that one spot on the second floor. Whenever Hugo takes control, it is possible he does it to torture his ex-wife even more from beyond the grave by making her watch him control her son. Please write back if you think it is possible.
This game is put together so well. The atmosphere leaves you with a constant feeling of dread, but at the same time you have a "villain" that feels so real and relatable. A real masterpiece!
This game IS a masterpiece! The use of actual actors really sells the horror, and it helps that they got REALLY GOOD actors to portray these characters so it doesn’t feel hokey or campy
Over two years and no sequel. Baggy Cat promised one is in the works but who knows at this point. If there is one, I hope it's not too different from the first in terms of game mechanics and atmosphere. I'd love to have another much larger hotel to sneak around in. Maybe even have two or more badies to watch out for at the same time.
Come to think of it mental illness in the horror genre is pretty significant causing people to become insane and unhinged and make them become serial killers.
it's also an unfortunate stigmatization against people with mental illness; it's statistically more likely for them to be victims of violence rather than to cause it
@@justice8718 Wow, someone's been drinking the Flavoraid... I think it has to do with the mom’s guilt about how Jimmy’s dad treated him? So she just excuses all of his behaviors instead of listening to what the hotel guests/Doctor were saying
Damn, Jimmy's past was so messed up, I hope in the near future that there's DLC so we can learn more about Jimmy's past and more, maybe even a way to save him perhaps? What do you think?
That part when Hugo is beating little Jimmy (mind he was like 2 years old) made me literally sick, I ended up crying my as* off after watching this because I know someone who went through the same stuff and its making me sad and angry in the same time...this type of men who is abusing children and women is the worst!
The twist of Hugo is that his family (The Halls) is cursed to be possessed by a violent spirit. At the ending, he explained that there will always be a "flame" within the Hall family (that flame being the urge to violence). Also Rose herself stated that Hugo wasn't abusive in the first half of their relationship (up to the point where they got married and when Rose birthed Jimmy), and that it only started later on. Hugo was probably like Jimmy, a good man, but the curse upon his family is just too much.
So I thought this game was perfectly done! The duality of Jimmy & Hugo, the effects of abuse and trauma on people, as well as the broader philosophical ideas of nature versus nurture or the morality of murder in desperate circumstances all culminate in such a rich, well written story. One of the best video game stories I’ve seen in a while!
Can we also appreciate Maya? She literally went around playing hide and seek with a murderer and managed to figure out the story of 3 mysterious deaths, and saved all her friends. Like how is she so talented?
Yeah, the loose end that is Jimmy still has more to go, the game ended with the real Jimmy in tears, so I feel like there should be some way to help Jimmy and get rid of Hugo. Or I might be remembering things wrong.
@@auraemerald8434 I think an interesting sequel would be one where you play as Jimmy trying to survive Hugo Punch just as Maya did, but it’s not really happening, just a representation of Jimmy trying to get away from Hugo (obviously, cuz Jimmy and Hugo aren’t different people, at least not mentally)
Not a sequel but they have another game with very similar mechanics and some of the same actors (maya's actress is a suspect in it) called contradiction
Or when Jimmy killed Hugo even though that means he needs to kill himself for good. Or escaping together with Jimmy because the hotel has consume him since he was a kid.
I know! It would be very interesting to tell a story with this type of setting, but I think it would fit better if Maya's character was a medium and that's why she's the only one who can recieve help from the ghosts to escape and reveal everything, that would make her character more unique, I don't know if that's more realistic than a Spirit's box tho. Now that I think about it, she kinda reminds me of Maya Fey from Ace Attorney, who also talks to ghosts.
Yeah but Hugo started taking effect even while Jimmy was growing up. For example, Amy referenced to Jimmy as a boy, so Jimmy had Hugo in him as he grew, from younger to where he is now.
I always thought of this game of a Jekyll & Hyde kind of aspect because in Jekyll and Hyde, Jekyll tried to be in control and be the good doctor he was but Hyde on the other hand wanted murder and death and from this I think Jimmy was trying to do the same thing as Jekyll trying to be a good man but seeing his mother killing his father before his very eyes. Started a change reaction and making him vulnerable to hugo and his cruelty.
I actually thought of The Shining because it not only takes place in a hotel, but it seems to imply there's a supernatural entity there that possesses someone and drives them to hurt people.
There's still something that's been bugging my mind, that final scene at the end of the game, a lit up candle while someone is breathing and suddenly the candle is blown out, I wonder if there's some meaning to it or if I'm just thinking too much.
My guess would be it represents the darkness of night. As the wick goes down, you progress through the night. Blowing it out representing morning coming.
opk, i CANNOT be the only one who played the entire game while wondering WHERE THE FUDGE WHERE AMYS PARENTS?? she was the daughter of a HOTEL GUEST so wtf where they?
MST3K answer: it's a game. Adding Amy's parents to the mix would have probably added another thread to the plot, making the story longer, not to mention they would have to probably pay two more actors, plus film extra scenes/dialogues for the characters that would interact with them (Rose, for example), and it's not relevant to the main story, so there would be no space in the budget for them.
Well, she died right after she burned her hand. Jimmy and Amy are the only ones who knew about her injury, and he wanted to keep it a secret from the adults. He gave her alcohol to numb the pain, and we all know how that turned out. Now that she is dead, Jimmy would have kept quiet about the incident; the parents might have assumed she had burned her hand while she was intoxicated.
From my point of view, i think her parents are still alive, not ghost. Their daughter died in the hotel, they probably wont be getting near that hotel again...

@@vinnyl264 Oh, I was positive that Hugo was an alternate personality of some kind. Could you provide where the creator said that? I'm struggling to find it.
@@SkyEcho751 there’s a part in the game menu that explicitly says that Jimmy does not have DID, but that the supposed alternate personality is actually the spirit of Hugo and that the game is, in fact, not portraying someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder
It was confirmed by the developers that jimmy doesnt have DID. The device used to talk to the ghosts was originally from jimmy. There were ghosts inside jimmys head that even maya could see and talk too. For outsiders it would probably be a mental ilness because of the trauma jimmy suffered. But jimmy was fighting ghosts.
As someone who has DID they use this exact scene setting and character archetype constantly to stigmatise us further. It wasn’t clear they weren’t using that trope as I know from experience alters in my system see themselves in the mirror when out. That’s a part of DID for some systems so it is still a not great stigma. They could have made it clearer it was inherited behaviour and not shown him with implied DID. Also because of his history of childhood trauma in reality he had a chance of developing DID and the devs know that. They did their research.
@@TheIndigoSystem the game pretty much directly tells you by the end that Jimmy's father was possessed by a ghost or a demon and that when Rose killed him, the ghost moved onto a new host.
@@lunammoon8503 Yeah, a whole bunch of nonsense from that person about implication and stigma when it's just a literary conceit and the game is explicit in paranormality. That person missed that key part of the game as much as this video's author.
@@skarloeythomas5172 i mean, the person is correct and saying that if one didn't know better, Jimmy's story DOES line up with stereotypical depictions of DID. @@lunammoon8503 No, not just a note in the menu. Rose's story reasonably suggests Jimmy is host to Hugo, the ghost. If the game were absent ghosts as a fundamental facet of the narrative, then surmise about mental disorders would be acceptable, and it's often a thing consumers of horror fall back to, but some consumers of this game simply sidestepped the obvious conclusion in the narrative to walk the beaten track. It's simply unnecessary.
14:00 theres a psychological explanation for Jimmy/Hugo but also a possible supernatural one as well. when Maya confronts Hugo in the basement Hugo says "she thought she got rid of him but she didnt get it maya! you see hugo was just one of us! just another log on the fire! he burned out! When you go to the storage room, there is a symbol that looks like an N in the wall. That is the Symbol of Society Against Evil from Escape the Night. I think Hugo Hall must have had contact with them, explaining why he has this ghost talk box thing on the hotel and the scrying mirror. Also maybe that's why he is a great magician.

Hugo died, but he possessed Jimmy. You can't contact a spirit when it is inside a vessel. The other ghosts can be contacted because they didn't possess anyone. They are just lurking around the hotel, especially on the spot where they died.
Maya can encounter hugo hall(jimmy father)if jimmy got posses by his father If hugo hall posses jimmy the hugo hall would be inside jimmy' body/soul and he can control jimmy body and rose also said to maya that jimmy is not control anymore so maybe hugo hall posses jimmy
yea, it's more of a movie, might've been a game if it had multiple endings, but all that you find out doesn't matter towards the story, you still have to save friends & get out
@@testacals does feel like it's missing payer-character impact on the story, like the spirits told us in the beginning "make him realize what he did," but we do none of that... so what was the point of uncovering the history if we just need to save our friends & gtfo anyway?
I feel terrible for those who died because of Jimmy/Hugo but I also feel sad for Jimmy. He was just an abused boy who never got the full treatment he needed because his mother refused to accept the truth and her own actions trying to protect him lead to his trauma, and thus his alter taking control. Ultimate the true villain was the Father, Hugo Hall that caused that this to happen to begin with. A great example of why taking mental health seriously is so important.
Part of me thinks that there may be some supernatural elements in the story with the great Hugo's performance being rather mystical and unlike the typical "pull a rabbit out of a hat" routine. Not to mention how odd it is that Hugo's tomb has a medieval theme (which matches the medieval weapons display).
You don't even need to wonder, he literally left behind to his son: -A box for talking to ghosts -A compass that can track ghosts -A magical mirror that is quite literally a periscope into the other world that the ghosts inhabit As for the tomb though it wasn't medieval on purpose, Rosemary just buried him in any way she could
There's a line when the player talks with Jimmy at Hugo's grave in the basement that states how "the fire within him has been burning down the Halls for centuries". I could only guess that it suggests sociopathic behavior and mental illness follow the Hall genetic line. Either that or it's an allusion to something deeper since the story incorporates other supernatural themes.
In the game it says he doesn’t have a split personality disorder. It’s supposed to be his father’s spirit hunting him so basically that’s Jimmy’s performance character he played as appearance with his father’s personality of cruelty.
usually irl games like this suck but this is an excellent game with crazy good acting and characters! i feel so bad for doctor Bose because he seemed genuinly nice and didnt deserve to die
In my opinion, Hugo (Jimmy’s farther) possessed Jimmy after he died. That is probably why jimmy has a split personality and he was the first person to die and the hotel and he wasn’t around the hotel when Mya was in the hotel talking to the other spirits. And I think that Hugo wanted revenge against Jimmy’s Mom (Rose).

I really like the writing in this game a lot, it makes each character seem so lifelike. And it shows that there are multiple reasons for why one person's life can go so wrong. And let's face it, the actor for Jimmy is absolutely amazing.
Something you didn't mention was that, in the credits, Harvey's last name is listed as "Hall". Meaning that either there was a huge coincidence in last names or he is in fact related to Hugo and therefore to Rose and Jimmy.
Sorry I'm writing so late but I just discovered the game. I read somewhere that the developers said they actually aren't related and the devs just made a mistake
I always thought that Harvey married Rose after her husband's mysterious dissapearance, because: 1) If he was Rose's relative, he would have "Dolores" surname since it's a maiden name of Rose in the birth certificate, but he's "Hall", not "Dolores"; 2) If Harvey was Hugo's relative, he wouldn't look too White and British, since Hugo Hall is an Indian, as it's stated in the birth certificate, and I don't think that Hugo's Indian relatives would be too bothered to go with him in the UK, especially after his dissapearance from the public (Maybe, Hugo could be born in India and then migrate with his parents in the UK, but let's be honest, how big was the chance for Hugo Hall, an Indian, to have 100% White European relative in North Yorkshire?); 3) It's very common thing for a married couple to share the same business, as Harvey and Rose did; 4) Harvey could take his wife's surname after a marriage; 5) Harvey always talked with Jimmy like he's his wife's child (I know that cause I was growing up with abusive stepfather).
It seems really strange that since Jimmy knows that people still might have questions for him, he still keeps all these mementos to his murderous childhood just lying around the hotel
I feel most sorry for Jimmy.. Imagine having to live (all alone) in a huge old hotel haunted by the people you murdered against your will because you're possessed by an evil, which completely controls your whole life and forces you to do things you don't want to

Though I feel neutral on the game, thank you for creating the video. I compliment how concise the story is, following the setting of having to avoid being attacked by Jimmy/Hugo. I would have loved an epilogue that Maya and her friends contacted the police to retrieve Jimmy. To add, Jimmy was trying to drown himself, you see with the scrying mirror a tub with bubbles when you search for clues in Rose's story.
I love how the game was made using real settings and real people to bring it to life. this game has an amazing set up with these features and give a truely horrifying look
@@solidale4691 I had only watched little bit of gameplay at the time and I understood just a little bit at the time of writing that comment, and I had only understood the basic stuff. But now I’m all caught up.
I thought I was the only one. Seeing him crying in the end broke my heart. It's like he didn't grow up past childhood. 😔 Stupid Hugo. What a horrible man/father. I respect Rose way more then I thought I would when I first heard of her.
This is one of the most amazing horror games I’ve seen in years. It’s simple, yet unique. It’s thrilling and engaging. It doesn’t rely on overdone tropes and utilizes a unique style and format to deliver an amazing experience throughout the entire game.
So my brother and I were discussing the end and these are the thoughts we came up with. I would love to hear other people's opinions 😁 So Jimmy/Hugo seems to have zeroed in on Maya specifically, which, in the ending is made clear but doesn't really make sense. He only has ever met her/spoken with her the one time at the front desk when she checked in. So, we wondered how on earth he could develop such as obsession so quickly. My answer? He didn't. He was waiting for her. Hear me out. We know Jimmy doesn't like technology, but what about Hugo? He seems to be the type of personality that would use anything to get what he wants. That being said, Maya was in town for a music festival. Something that big would probably have been all over social media. Facebook at least (not sure about other platforms tbh) has the RVSP button that allows people to say whether or not they are going to an event. Those pages are not private so in theory anyone could poke about online and see a potential list of people (or victims) that would be in the area. Now, I'm not saying Hugo/Jimmy could 100% predict that anyone, including Maya, would end up at the hotel. She did say they were gonna camp outside. But if he knew the weather well enough and had the only hotel in town, he could in theory reasonably predict who may have shown up at his hotel that night and been prepared in case a particular person (or persons) ended up there. If that is the case, I'm guessing Maya is just like any other young person on social media and isn't too private about herself or her life. If she were targeted, Hugo/Jimmy could have leaner about her online and become obsessed. This theory doesn't really take the Hall curse into account but I couldn't really see how that fit in. Anyway, sorry for the super long ramble. Here's a potato for your trouble. 🥔 I'd love to hear other people's theories!!!
For me, i think Hugo/jimmy isn't waiting for a specific person. That doesn't make sense since Jimmy just meet Maya. Hugo is actually waiting for anyone who can out-witted him which happen to be Maya. Someone who can defeated him with his own game. or Hugo is actually waiting for someone who have a special ability to talk to ghost since that seem to be the only way to uncover his dark secret lol idk btw sorry for the late reply, i know it's 6 month ago but this game is still making me puzzle a few thing😅
@@lailaisaidit2223 I like your thinking 😁 Like I said, he could have been waiting for any number of people, but that fits with what you say. I love the discussion!
I love that Hugo Punch is inspired by Punch and Judy, a popular puppet show in the UK I used to watch growing up. Punch’s catchphrase was, of course, “That’s the way to do it!” I think this is so cool of the creators.
I love playing this kind of games that make the character look realistic I've played erika before and I kind of enjoy the game but this game is scary and actually u get to control ur character
I feel so sorry for Jimmy, he is a kind man, but Hugo Punch has made him an evil being throughout his whole life . People think that Hugo Punch is either his split personality or an evil entity possessing Jimmy ( possibly Jimmy's Father, who was an evil as hell man ). I personally believe it is the evil entity that has possessed Jimmy since he was a kid.(like i said, possibly his father which i guess is a split personality )
Since the devs have said that Jimmy 100% does NOT have DID, I think it's more plausible that either Jimmy is haunted by his dead, abusive father's spirit, and Hugo is forcing Jimmy to commit these acts... OR, like stated in the final part of the video, Hugo's abuse towards Jimmy and his murder (which happened right in front of Jimmy) made Jimmy believe that it's okay to abuse and kill people. He continues to abuse and kill people throughout his life because he's never been punished for any of it, solidifying his belief that it's okay. But, in the back of his mind, there's a subconscious voice telling him that what he's doing *isn't* okay, and that he needs to stop.
That and the game might also be a reference to "The Shinning", pretty cool
:0 SMART
I used to watch Punch and Judy constantly as a kid
too right, there are many references to Punch in the game, from paintings and posters of the titular character to more subtle hints, an abusive husband acting out against his wife and baby, bats and clubs as a weapon, a doctor being one of the characters only to fall prey who was a character in the original puppet show, a hanging where in the puppet show punch tricks the hangman sent to hang punch for his crimes into hanging himself and in the game he fools others to think the doctor was abusing him making him take his own life, even his alter ego Hugo Punch is a nod to that, Hugo for his father and Punch being the main character of Punch and Judy, a man with a large head using bats and sticks and clubs to hit others which is a common weapon of choice for Mr. Punch to bash the other puppets but unlike the puppets who are made of wood Hugo's victims are actual real people

Oh thank goodness. I'm getting tired of DID being an easy trope to fall back on. It demonizes mental illness, specifically DID which is already heavily stigmatized. Good on the developer for not using that trope.
This game's whole story wouldn't have happened if she took Jimmy's actions seriously.
Welp
@Andreea - Bianca Munteanu Awesome job Rose indeed.

If you read the wikipedia page of the guy who said it, you'll understand the connection for sure.)
Plus you should check out the previouse game from the developer. It explains the little black mirror and could give you new insights into the whole 'The fire has been burning down the Halls for generations.' line...
That is a wonderful theory!

@@SilverSkyCloud I am in full support of Rose killing Hugo. I don't think people like that ever stop that kind of stuff.

Yeah, it makes no sense. I think they'd've stepped in after the hand burning incident, no?
MST3K answer: it's a game. Adding Amy's parents to the mix would have probably added another thread to the plot, making the story longer, not to mention they would have to probably pay two more actors, plus film extra scenes/dialogues for the characters that would interact with them (Rose, for example), and it's not relevant to the main story, so there would be no space in the budget for them.
Amy was threatened by Jimmy not to tell anyone what was happening, so maybe they had no clue, even after post-hand-burnt

The real antagonist of the story is Jimmy's parents.

BUT THE FIRES BEEN BURNING DOWN THE HALLS FOR CENTURIES! clearing the way! lighting the darkness! laying waste to the old and the poor and the weak!"
until i heard this i thought it was purely psychological but what if the Halls were cursed with an evil entity even a demon that gets passed down causes mayhem over generations
The developer makes it very clear that Jimmy doesn't have a psychological condition of any sort, and is being possessed by his late father

I never actually thought of that, he was such a good magician because he was using genuine magic

I feel so bad for Jimmy. I would have loved to see an ending where he overcomes Hugo and gets to live his life recovering.
By this point he's too far gone to recover unfortunately, he can't fight the evil personality when it takes over, he quite literally becomes a spectator and is trapped in his body :(
@@theshermantanker7043 That’s so devastating :( poor him.

@@robloxfriends6279 But since he has a mental disability, won’t he be brought to a mental institute instead?
I thought Jimmy might have been possessed by his dad, since he died in the hotel but Maya did not encounter him.
okay but if he's inside jimmy how would maya encounter him?
@@epkurnissheoway That's the thing Maya encountered Jimmy's mum but not his dad.
Hugo died, but he possessed Jimmy. You can't contact a spirit when it is inside a vessel. The other ghosts can be contacted because they didn't possess anyone. They are just lurking around the hotel, especially on the spot where they died.
Also would explain why he has the scrying mirror and the thing you use to communicate with ghosts. Maybe he was trying to reach out to his father?
Maya can encounter hugo hall(jimmy father)if jimmy got posses by his father
If hugo hall posses jimmy the hugo hall would be inside jimmy' body/soul and he can control jimmy body and rose also said to maya that jimmy is not control anymore so maybe hugo hall posses jimmy

I know right?
It's the graphics probably. So beautiful.

yea, it's more of a movie, might've been a game if it had multiple endings, but all that you find out doesn't matter towards the story, you still have to save friends & get out
@@driftingdruid Not necessarily . You don't need multiple endings to be a game
@@testacals does feel like it's missing payer-character impact on the story, like the spirits told us in the beginning "make him realize what he did," but we do none of that... so what was the point of uncovering the history if we just need to save our friends & gtfo anyway?
Fun Fact: If you look at rose gonna kill Jimmy's Dad, You will see the bat swing, if u compare it to jimmys swing, they hold it on the same way.
That makes everything so much worse
now that’s a stretch
I genuinely feel bad for Dr. Bose. He lost everything to jimmy.
Im pretty sure Hugo is a demon that haunts the Hall bloodline.
You don't even need to wonder, he literally left behind to his son:
-A box for talking to ghosts
-A compass that can track ghosts
-A magical mirror that is quite literally a periscope into the other world that the ghosts inhabit
As for the tomb though it wasn't medieval on purpose, Rosemary just buried him in any way she could
There's a line when the player talks with Jimmy at Hugo's grave in the basement that states how "the fire within him has been burning down the Halls for centuries".
Why does Jimmy’s head remind me of a coconut 🤣

usually irl games like this suck but this is an excellent game with crazy good acting and characters! i feel so bad for doctor Bose because he seemed genuinly nice and didnt deserve to die

Jimmy isn’t a bad man, he is a good man but he is trying to push himself away from Hugo Punch however he can’t because of the events that encouraged him. So hopefully in the sequel, we can get Maya and her friends to help Jimmy escape Hugo Punch once and for all.

Something you didn't mention was that, in the credits, Harvey's last name is listed as "Hall". Meaning that either there was a huge coincidence in last names or he is in fact related to Hugo and therefore to Rose and Jimmy.
What? Really?
Isn't he Jimmy's stepdad? I'm pretty sure someone says so in the game but I might be remembering it wrong lol
Maybe he's Rose's brother? Or some other close relative.
Sorry I'm writing so late but I just discovered the game. I read somewhere that the developers said they actually aren't related and the devs just made a mistake
I always thought that Harvey married Rose after her husband's mysterious dissapearance, because:
1) If he was Rose's relative, he would have "Dolores" surname since it's a maiden name of Rose in the birth certificate, but he's "Hall", not "Dolores";
2) If Harvey was Hugo's relative, he wouldn't look too White and British, since Hugo Hall is an Indian, as it's stated in the birth certificate, and I don't think that Hugo's Indian relatives would be too bothered to go with him in the UK, especially after his dissapearance from the public (Maybe, Hugo could be born in India and then migrate with his parents in the UK, but let's be honest, how big was the chance for Hugo Hall, an Indian, to have 100% White European relative in North Yorkshire?);
3) It's very common thing for a married couple to share the same business, as Harvey and Rose did;
4) Harvey could take his wife's surname after a marriage;
5) Harvey always talked with Jimmy like he's his wife's child (I know that cause I was growing up with abusive stepfather).
It seems really strange that since Jimmy knows that people still might have questions for him, he still keeps all these mementos to his murderous childhood just lying around the hotel
I feel most sorry for Jimmy.. Imagine having to live (all alone) in a huge old hotel haunted by the people you murdered against your will because you're possessed by an evil, which completely controls your whole life and forces you to do things you don't want to
This game is both dark and brilliant! Immersive and spooky! Thanks for sharing! :)
I think the next game is where Jimmy tries to escape Hugo Punch in his mind
nah, that's the separately-sold DLC :P
I love how rose decided to not let her son end his suffering and let herself die..leaving him alive to commit even more terrible things
This game is just so beautiful. Usually if a game wanted to mix live action with gameplay, it would janky unless it was a cutscene. Yet this game seems mix those two things remarkably well. A great game truly

Its so nice seeing this game get more attention!
Im surprised nobody mentioned how amazing the acting is for the characters. Especially Jimmy. Executed that role wonderfully
I feel so bad for all the characters in this game.

I would love to hear other people's opinions 😁
So Jimmy/Hugo seems to have zeroed in on Maya specifically, which, in the ending is made clear but doesn't really make sense.
I'd love to hear other people's theories!!!
For me, i think Hugo/jimmy isn't waiting for a specific person. That doesn't make sense since Jimmy just meet Maya. Hugo is actually waiting for anyone who can out-witted him which happen to be Maya. Someone who can defeated him with his own game.
or Hugo is actually waiting for someone who have a special ability to talk to ghost since that seem to be the only way to uncover his dark secret lol idk
btw sorry for the late reply, i know it's 6 month ago but this game is still making me puzzle a few thing😅
@@lailaisaidit2223 I like your thinking 😁 Like I said, he could have been waiting for any number of people, but that fits with what you say. I love the discussion!

YESSSSSSSSSSS LORE!!!! LORE!!!! THANK YOU MAN I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!
I love that Hugo Punch is inspired by Punch and Judy, a popular puppet show in the UK I used to watch growing up. Punch’s catchphrase was, of course, “That’s the way to do it!”

I love playing this kind of games that make the character look realistic
I've played erika before and I kind of enjoy the game but this game is scary and actually u get to control ur character
A voice that gets pushed away by Jimmy as he gives in to the temptation to commit his crimes.
Wait i thought he was gonna drown himself in the bathroom or something? How did you know he was cutting his wrists, as far as i know it wasn't hinted like that?
Drowning is harder to go out in than cutting ya wrists
