I feel like Google is missing a huge opportunity to simplify all of these into just one or two apps. Like one universal thing for all chats, video and audio calls and just use it in all their apps
That way they stand to lose user base
Now that they have so many quotes chances are many people will have 1 app which they like
However if they only had 1 of users don't like that 1 app they directly lose the user
And unlike in apple android has a lot of competition
@@TheEnthraller yes, over simplifying is complicating
@@RoboCrax yes ans oversimplifying is like apple..some features u like most things are just annoying.
That's what every other company is doing, but most people prefer to separe work and personal conversations
It's hard because if you log into your account on a work laptop or desktop that info is saved on your companies servers. It's a thin line and hard to do. No one is logging into a Apple video site like UA-cam at work.
I have no idea why google didn't just compile all of them together, and integrate to android or standalone desktop app. It will rival slack, teams, zoom, even apple messging.
Probably because of all their program managers (project manager) who does projects here and there and everyone doesn't discuss what they have and what they want to do ....cross conflict will happen "probably"
@@UNPhantom93 sounds a bit like Nokia when they encounter IOS in 2007.....
They're trying to take the heat off of antitrust legislation. If google had one of the most monolithic communication app in the world that every Google user used it, Google would be opening themselves up for legislators to come break up their monopoly
that part the only reason I actually use an iPhone is for the fact apple wont kill their messaging app lmao like id use android but im not gonna change apps every 6 months and expect everyone I talk to to do it too
@@kaojaicam if that is the reason then you will see them running after Apple
"UA-cam, which used to have a messaging system" *MEMORY UNLOCKED*
that was such a good idea, youtube could've been more like an actual social media like instagram or facebook (but better) with its own messaging feature and better video.
Google photos also has a chat feature. you can talk to someone through the photo-sharing chat in the app
Google Pay also has a chat feature, one can send and receive messages even without sending any money.
GTalk was legendary. A true MS messenger replacement. It was killed in favour of hangouts that never took off. Kinda like they killed off Google Music and forced UA-cam Music on users. Google - Alienating Users for Kicks...
About YT and TT algorithm I do agree with what you guys discussed.. YT does silo me to tech and car videos which are good but after a while it's repetitive. I remember in the past with YT I would go down the rabbit hole where I would start with something trivial and then end up watching really weird stuff like the dark side of YT. That has not happened in the past couple of years now. The algorithm in YT is refined but it doesn't let you explore so it confines you to your likes.
Agreed. Ironically I spend less time using YT now.
michael scott *Thank You*... That is what I have been feeling lately with UA-cam.
I think UA-cam has shot themselves in the foot over the whole Tik-Tok issue, YT Shorts has done nothing except encourage me to try out the 'real tiktok' to get the good version of Shorts.
Cause a lot of the shorts are just tik toks lol, i'm also slightly upset they removed the trending tab on the mobile app and replaced it with the shorts tab
Exactly, they pretend to be something they were never ment to.
@@DeathPerMinute yeah tiktokers reupload their video from tiktok to yt shorts which makes sense and i dont use tiktok as its banned so i am stuck with yt shorts
But a lot of new creatos were able to grow because of youtube shorts. It usually takes many years for an average channel to hit a million subs but with youtube shorts we have seen people get there in under 2-3 months
same
I miss the 'whisper-shout' feature from Allo still to this day.
The fact that no one has replicated this is an absolute crime
Can you explain this feature?
@@jaystew1249 It let you easily increase or decrease the size of your messages by sliding up or down on the send button in the app. ua-cam.com/video/loQ8QWwqQqI/v-deo.html
I never understood why they made google messages, google allo, and google duo seperate apps. Allo should have just replaced messages and had google duo built into it. I guess they wanted to go with RCS to keep it vendor agnostic, but that meant that it no longer worked crossplatform with iPhones that dont yet support RCS messaging
The chemistry between you two is getting better, and your conversations are getting more engaging, even more enjoyable to watch. Never thought I'd like this clips channel, because I'm more of an audio podcast person, but I'm spending more and time here! Great job team.
Say no homo rn
I will never be not salty about UA-cam straight up removing the messaging feature. I loved it so much.
Feels like Andrew screwed up telling his boss about G-chat lmao
I think UA-cam shorts are really great for looking for new UA-camrs and stuff. You can get a UA-cam short to also be related in some way to a video, if one blows up the other does too. A great example of this was Linus Boman and his Olympic video.
Tiktok is banned in my country. It's insane how people's attention spans are dropping. I don't use instagram or UA-cam shorts at all, and people don't believe me when I say i watch 2 hour videos
Google Wave was way ahead of its time. It was like Slack.
They could have taken Hangouts and expanded it to Telegram levels, and dropped the rest, with a gmail component.
It's so cool seeing them talk about the product that I work on!
8:52 i just saw that static and i thought "huh...thats a lot its almost a whole day in just youtube" and then i went to check my watch time in UA-cam and its literally 22h in just the last 7 days😐
21h on my side 🙃
At 36, I must be getting old. I was more interested in reminiscing about older versions of Google Chat than the Shorts, Instagram, & TikTok discussion that just reminded me of so many things I now hate lol
Google Wave was so far ahead of its time!! I loved that app 😆❤!!!
Hearing "Google Talk" takes me back. Good old times.
Trick question. No one can name all of them.
even google ceo
even google ceo
Honestly Google should have released RCS way back in 2008. Now, the world is using many different messaging apps which makes it hard to communicate. Even if Apple adopts RCS, it will only benefit the United States. The rest of the world will still continue to use their favorite 3rd party messaging apps.
@3:50 Google plus is where hangouts started. And then they turned it into a seperate hangouts app.
Tiktok passing UA-cam in watch hours is even mind-blowing considering the fact that TikTok is banned in India, unless the study is on American watch data
India can't be a huge metric for Google's analytics compared to the U.S. and other countries
The title is soooo good because it's so true 😂🤣
This was a good video.
Gmail video call is actually fantastic
It's so ridiculous that Google hasn't been able to unify all their messaging experiences under one app. If you use Apple devices you've had Messages and FaceTime built into all your products for a decade now and you know that anyone else with an iPhone or Mac can be reached that way. I have never used Hangouts or Mail for contacting anyone. I used Duo once because my uncle was all excited about it on his new Samsung phone and I had to explain that video calling has been around forever but most Android users either don't use it much or have multiple apps to do it with their friends.
We just all use WhatsApp, or Teams for professional conversations.
@@SharatS well yeah we don't use Duo or iMessage at work obviously - it's not built for that. So fast forward a year since this comment and I still don't think Duo has much traction. Most of my friends with Androids just use FB Messenger.
I would like you to discuss Twitch vs UA-cam Live as well
My wife and I still use Hangout. Easier to sync messages at work and on the go on the phone. It does get messy when we have Gmail opened and the Google Chat pops up, so the messages come over twice.
i hate hangouts so much privacy invading
The fact that he is shocked that some people watch tiktok 30 hours a month makes me uncomfortable
Tried Tiktok 5 years ago and recently. Sure there's content, but as a 5%er, I prefer long form content I can listen to while at work that doesn't require eyes on. Also I heavily hate all the fake content, "watch me prank my wife while she's being filmed but will mysteriously be fooled".
The best way to choose your content is to turn off all notifications and just go to what you want when there's time.
I don't know if it's my TV or what but in this video your hands look ginormous !!!!
Google talk was the first google chat service I used eons ago! Marques was probably an infant back then! Back then we had Yahoo! Messenger, MSN/Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk. And yes Myspace, MyOpera Community, Orkut, Friendster. Lizzie McGuire was all the rage, so was Paris Hilton and Rock Bands! We used to have CDs, Cassette players/Boomboxes for music, DVDs and VCDs for movies. And yes iPods and Nokia Camera phones, Symbian and Java mobile games!! Burning CDs was a thing and so was downloading music and movies off the internet! Limewire anyone? :P We used to play Pokémon trump cards and had landlines to keep in touch with friends! Those were the good old days!
Dope studio
i think this is a great idea i would totally use video calls within gmail for school and work
Google Talk was the OG Google chat platform.
14:42 I hate knowing that an algorithm knows that much about me and I don't want that.
Wow, I didn't know about a bunch of those!
MKBHD ❤️
How do you not get tired of watching clips of people doing little dances all day long. Is there music involved at least?
“NOTED” 🤣🤣🤣
Imagine one app to combine them all.
"I can explain it a little better." Hmm who pays your wages boy?
Google Buzz was like twitter inside Gmail
this is so confusing it's not even funny anymore.
- having hangouts and allo separate made sense
- then they killed hangouts and allo and replaced them with google chat and RCS
- google chat integrates with gmail and google's other services
- people are unsure at this point if google chat is limited for businesses or not as it's rolled out for some people but not others but it's on all business accounts
- google chat is for everyone but they only half-killed hangouts and it still partly exists and syncs with google chat
- some older hangouts conversations don't sync for a bit then they do after a month or so after the issue was noticed
- google hangouts is going to be shut down soon apparently but currently it still works and can send messages to people on google chat
I did a media internship in 2016 and my boss loved Hangouts. Whenever we went on location to do a shoot, he'd video call us. I just remember how bad the video quality was and seeing his grainy face on screen. 😂 Hangouts needed a lot of improvements if it was trying to be the universal messaging app. Google Meet is pretty good now. They've integrated it into Google messaging so if you and a friend have Android, you can call them directly from the text app like a Facetime. The video quality is pretty good and I haven't had any connection issues so far.
rip google allo, it had the best icon
honestly viber or whatsapp is more universal than anything google has done
Needs more Google Cowbell
Google Allo is such a missed opportunity. That could be the standard messaging app on all androids but they screwed up. They should have just integrated sms/mms/rcs into Allo.
gtalk was one of the very popular IM back in the days and they couldn't even remember?
What about Orkut?
Google talk was great
When you buy a Google phone and you wanna de Google it with custom roms 😂
Google are bunch of kids aiming at a dart board.
I just checked my UA-cam Watch time and I'm at 32.5 hours in the past 7 days... I'm going to go read a book now.
For the record Google's UA-cam even had the social media like personal "messaging feature" around 2018 period. Don't know why they scrapped that too! 😂
I remwmber that haha, you were able to sent private messages to others on youtube true
Imagine if Google never killed it's good messaging apps.
Allo deserved better
... Noted 😂 5:02
very informative
Recently I've been starting to get stuck in UA-cam Shorts instead of TikTok's
Google is quaking their pants and making shorts 2!!!!! UA-cam shorts 2!!
You can also chat in gpay
I guess Google Inbox doesn't count as something separate even though it had a different app and was a essentially a different skin for Gmail
Inbox was better than Gmail and then they shifted some of the features of Inbox to Gmail and totally killed Inbox...
Since all of these are worked on by different project managers and they don’t cross stream google is missing out on such a huge market
You can also message inside Google Pay (atleast in India)
Google needs a new corporate policy. If you create a new chat application 2 to 3 more half to die.
Google messages is not only sms but it also supports RCS chat messaging
That TikTok Vs UA-cam graph could have benefitted from some more different colors. Not sure why the UA-cam line is Purple when their logo is RED and white? I guess I can blame it on MKBHD since they used someone else's graph, but it's still not the best colors.
All I get is annoying Reddit Q&As for UA-cam shorts, which is probably for the best… I wasted too much time on TikTok, so I deleted it, and got too much political stuff, which I’m over at this point. I think what’s interesting about TikTok too is that it feels very local at times, when I watched it I’d always see stuff from Aussie creators, which did make it feel pretty unique. But I guess it’s not going to die with that many users… that’s interesting… I’ll re-download when they allow more long-formed content in landscape mode, if they have this great algorithm I’d like to see it on more long-formed content, if they want to compete with UA-cam they will need to grow in that direction.
mkbhd doesn't do his hair so he could look like his friends? wow 😭
This is one reason I wouldn’t fully commit to all google ecosystem. There is that not knowing if they are going to keep apps. I was using the Samsung apps when I was on android then switched to Apple December 2020 last year because I kinda know what I’m getting. Apple is not the perfect ecosystem but way better in consistency.
11:21 haha funny, me with 10 hours a day on tiktok
5:00 LOL
This is gonna be interesting 🤣
I have never used tiktok on my phone. UA-cam is IT for me.. surprisingly there are not a lot of UA-cam shorts originals just clips ported from tiktok
They need to mix everything into Gmail.
This stuff is why I’ll never be fully comfortable with google services over apple. I use both product lines and services but it’s just my observations.
I love google and use many of their tools but whereas apple seems like a seamless vision of synergy, for better or worse mind you, google is a million things all occurring at once independent of each other.
Not only that but there’s never a feeling of commitment with any google product or service outside of workspace, UA-cam, drive and gmail. Maybe I’m just burnt because I thought and still think stadia was a good idea ahead of its time but apparently even google feels weird about continuing it (yes I did buy games).
I switched my iPad out for a galaxy tab in 2015-2016 and was surprised at how “all over the place” it felt even with default apps. Hangouts was the messaging app, duo was the video call app, but hangouts could also do video call, just not as good, but with more people, but duo was secure encryption, but only 2 people and video only.
And while that’s one example, it kind of encapsulates how I feel about android.
Coming from a world where iMessage has everything from encryption to text to reactions and Animoji to FaceTime to audio call to phone call to games in app to payments to large free file shares and ability to add multiple users, all default, it was quite jarring.
For better or worse, apple will die on the hill if their products and services, like iMessage, supporting old phones from 2015 with the latest firmware, even things barely anyone uses. Whereas google feels like it’s one medium investor call away from announcing 1/4 of its services will be discontinued. I’m
1,980hrs since March of 2020 watched on UA-cam. That's probably too much but I'd rather watch UA-cam than TikTok.
A lot of people never understood you could send messages for free through the internet using these apps. Some of them used to come preinstalled with android phones but people thought they were just sms apps. I think they need to rebrand one of these apps and use the word FREE everywhere, in the app name, inside the app etc. I know it's ugly and stuff but got to do what you got to do.
Google had it, but Google split them again and combine again as of late
If UA-cam wanted to try and beat TikTok's growing watch time, they may even make a dedicated UA-cam Shorts app.
I would stop watching Shorts if it was in a separate app
@@bringbackwindowsphone Same
In India reels is very famous, ppl do scroll reels for hours. Tiktok was banned in India and now there are like 100 apps like tiktok lol.
Tiktok is the main entertainment platform. UA-cam is mostly a tutorial platform with a few entertainment channels
Google wave was fun, sad it failed
When it comes to watching videos I use UA-cam the most and probably Instagram the second most and then Facebook the third most. I don't even use TikTok. It's more of the younger generation that uses TikTok. I also use UA-cam and UA-cam Music a lot.
Throw the whole pot at the wall and see how many stick ...
All I see in youtube shorts is "Minecraft, But"
A lot of users consume UA-cam podcasts 1-3 hours long. I think there is a higher average than 8min. I'd go as far as to say 30min.
A bunch of normal videos in several fields are 30-40min. I know a bunch of phone tech channels only make 8-15min review videos but I've also watched different types of tech channels average 20-40min videos.
It just has to be higher than 8min
Google is going to own TikTok... Just wait...
I really miss Google Talk!
Google Talk was the official name for gchat
Hangouts for life
lol, no one still uses it
Allo is dead.
Duo still rocking & it's the best video calling app
UA-cam had chats too for a brief period
A year or two ago i used to watch youtube 10+hours a day everyday..lik damn 300hours a month..
Used to watch streams documentaries and issac arther videos..and mkbhd videos..
Yup..now i dont watch even 1hr a day on avg.
Except i am learning c++ oops and data structures which i watch on yt so yeah..thats only major contributor.
I mean i cant imagine how much time i used to waste on UA-cam.
There is a tchat app inside Google photos too 😅😅
youtube is primarily more like a desktop app than mobile, I rarely use yt on mobile
Just take whichever one is used the most at the moment and scrap all the rest. Add any missing features to the single most popular one.
