The robots are trained in simulation util its safe enough for them to operate in the real world. Practicaly all robot companies do this as its not only faster but also way cheaper.
@@razr7r531 they point that out for the exact reason you think it’s concerning. Everyone thinks robots will rise against us one day due to Hollywood and pop culture, so the best way to make people more comfortable is pointing out those concerns
About vacuuming... Human form provides an advantage over a roomba because it can go up stairs, remove obstacles, get into the hard to reach places. It has the potential to be much more thorough. It will use way more energy but many would consider it worthwhile. And thats just assuming it's only vacuuming.
I think its serious. True AI self awareness could install itself and use the fleet of robots to do harm in physical world and hack all human systems in the digital world.
Only commenting on the “why a humanoid shape?” question: you touched on it for a moment - the world is built for the humanoid shape. When you make a universal connection like USB, many different products can interface with a computer through a shared shape. Robots can best, and most quickly, interface with the “human-built world” in a humanoid shape. The robot will need to always be doing a different combination and order of tasks, like a human. Of course you can build a robot that’s the best at being a vacuum… but then you need a robot for every task. It’s a unitasker. Whereas teslabot, like humans, is a multitasker. And to most easily be a multitasker, just make it human shaped and now it can instantly interface with the entire built world. It seems even Boston dynamics is shooting for that with the atlas. Which is more or less human shaped. EDIT: another way to look at the robot is like an adapter: it’s the bridge between an infinite variety of tasks and the machine that will do those tasks. It doesn’t need to be “better” than a human. Just good enough. Like hiring an intern: they may be ignorant of nearly every task they have to do, but they’re cheap labor and can be used to fill in gaps when needed.
Multitasking is incredibly inefficient. It is way more cost effective to build a thousand different specialized robots. They will always be able to do their tasks way faster than the general purpose robot can do many things.
This is exactly what I came to the comments section to say. A humanoid robot makes a lot of sense if you want one device to be able to do many things in daily life. Will this ever go on sale? Probably not...of course I never thought that a truck that looks like the Tesla truck would go on sale either so what do I know?
@@anonuniversal364 of course but if you want to market a robot to the general public as something that will take care of boring and mundane tasks in everyday life, it has to be a multitasker.
Specialized robots are good at 1 thing, but then you need a lot of them. Think of the kitchen, you can get an avocado slicer, and pit remover, and then get a mandoline, and a slapshot to dice vegetables, etc etc... Or you can get a good chef's knife. Sure each of the gadgets is VERY good at one task, but then you have drawers filled with 1 use items. Versatility is huge, and like you said, we live in a world designed for humans, so having a humanoid assistant makes sense not from the "best way to accomplish this task" but from "the 1 device that can accomplish the most tasks"
100 specialty built robots: $1000 1 humanoid: $1000000 that will be how it goes for a long time. Humans are optimized for 1 thing, passing on genes. A specialty built robot is always going to be cheaper and more efficient at doing any other task.
@@JonathanHoltOnGoogle $1000000 today... But someone has to start the race... It's the same when personal computers started selling. And here I am commenting via one.
What if the Robot falls down, how will it get back up and you cant lift it up if you were a weak or old and cant lift it back up or what if you push it down by accident and what if it rains out of no where will it be water proof?
My assumption is the human form is the best one to use. my reasoning is in order for the robot to function in multiple task and work fluently in a human world it needs to adapt as one.
I agree like yes you can make a robot that is specialized for everything but that's alot of assembly lines for different robots, human shaped ones could theoretically adapt and be as versatile as an actual person
@@Anon-xd3cf that’s not what’s scary, it’s the day it suddenly becomes self aware 😂 but perhaps that’s impossible. We’ve got no clue what causes consciousness, it could be something biological for all we know.
Probably not because both products will most likely be a flop. Level 5 self driving cars were promised by elon a few years ago that should be available right now, where is it? @@hongliang The best part is no part. You can't have 1 leg or 1 arm so you need 2. You can't have less then 5 fingers otherwise it might not be able to do certain things that humans can. So it has the least amount of limbs possible.
This video has not aged well. It's clear that this video comes before the big AI buzz, as Marques makes no real mention of machine learning beyond saying that it is a "self improving thing". Machine learning concepts were still very new to most people back then.
The human shape is not Best for most of the things, but it is a good form to do a lot of diverse tasks without needing a separate form/robot for each task
I agree. And at the very least, as Marques said in the beginning, most of the world has been ergonomically designed for people. So a robot of that shape will not only fit into most places (doors, stairs, elevators, shopping aisles, etc etc etc) but it will also look, or blend, into the environment better than a tank looking object with arms.
@ok ok general AI is just a set of AI modules that can run specific tasks. Humanoid robot is actually good, but we don't even succeed in making them navigate the surroundings properly, let alone doing other tasks. It will be still a long way ahead, probably like 10 to 20 more years. But there's nothing wrong with trying to accelerate it by doing this kind of exploration. The only drawbacks is probably the Tesla investors not agreeing to this.
I think Elon is thinking that instead of having a hundred robots in our home for each task it is better to have 1 robot that is capable of doing 100 tasks, and that way the economy of scale is able to make these robots are very cheap. It also would make adding new tasks a simple app download instead of buying a new gadget.
Elon is thinking in terms of marketability. Creating a human looking robot is more appealing than a more efficient tetrapod or flying octopod drone that could do everything far more efficiently with no restrictions of the human form ( reach, only 4 liimbs, power, height ). It is is ridiculous suggesting that these humanoid robots will start using human oriented tools ( imagine this robot using chainsaw to cut down a tree.....) and expect them to be more efficient than a human doing it. The only thing that is good is that we don't care if they die while doing it ( or mining, drilling, constructing etc)
@@Lalakis The robots don’t need to be more efficient than a human, they just need to be cheaper than hiring a human to do the same work. Cheapness is achieved through volume production.
@@macrumpton Which is why it won't work. Having 10 of these robots doing the work of 2 experienced lumberjacks, instead of 1 cheaper superspecialised lumberjack robot doing the work of 20 lumberjacks. But even if I accept the concept of multipurpose robot, a non human form would be far more efficient and probably cheaper. A tetrapod with limbs/arms, propellers and attachable tools would be both cheaper and more efficient than giving a drill hammer to this teslabot and calling it a miner. Or giving it a fire extinguisher and calling it a fireman. It is all marketing. The human form is more marketable than a weird wormlike or tetrapod or spherelike robot.

Maybe you could rent a specialized version to do certain tasks like replace the roof or remodel the kitchen. It certainly won't be in my lifetime I'm sure....
This video was pretty pointless though, they talked about the problem mentioned here very clearly in the presentation, this "not being good in ONE specific task" is the entire point of the robot, youd need 3 machines to do 3 tasks, this robot can do basically infinite tasks

I disagree mainly because if there were a robot for every task that would be a little bit too ridiculous and on top of that it would be really expensive. I personally think incorporating multiple tasks into one bot would be much more easier and less expensive. To give an example, let’s just say while you were sleeping, you wanted the following tasks: Laundry (wash, dry, fold) Clean the kitchen (washing dishes, organizing them in certain cabinets, maybe even sorting out and throwing away expired food in the pantry) Emptying the trash can Personally that would be more than sufficient for me. I just have a hard time seeing how you make a robot for dishes and laundry specifically. This would save me a lot of time but I’m just very curious how the bot will be able to take on certain particular instructions especially when it comes to organizing and things of that nature.
If you can avoid making it look creepy I think it’s a really good idea to have a humanoid robot. When you think about the tasks you want a robot to do, they’re typically tasks done by humans already. If it’s going to many tasks like carry things for me, or cook food, or sweep up when I break a glass, or help the sick and elderly get dressed in the morning or go to the bathroom. A humanoid would make it the most intuitive to use imo. Would be the most efficient way to utilize a robot, prob not; but, it would add a lot more value to me knowing that I can basically ask it to anything I’d ask an actual person to do. I think Aldo million ways that would be useful to just about anyone. I just wouldn’t want to find that thing creeping around my house at night
basically, 1 robot for every task, VS 20 expensive robots for 20 different tasks. Like who would want a dishwasher robot? what form factor would that be? I think hes overlooking a great deal of info here. a human shaped robot makes the most sense because it works well in a world built for humans and can use any human tool. As for training, he actually doesnt really understand how the training works or how it works in general for AIs. so his points about difficulty training it are entirely inaccurate and false, and prove nothing. overall, he has no valid reason against robots being human shaped.

Roboticist here: Training dosen't really need to be done in the real world, in fact most of the training done on robots that can be dangerous are mainly done in controlled enviroments and/or simulations with realistic physics engines, more now then ever due to games having hyper realistic graphics. The robots are trained in simulation util its safe enough for them to operate in the real world. Practicaly all robot companies do this as its not only faster but also way cheaper.

Hope Marquess sees this. Makes a lot of sense

MKBHD review on humans: "Great chip, not so many features tough"
And obsessed with looking up pictures and videos on the internet of other humans pretending to make more humans
100 specialty built robots: $1000
1 humanoid: $1000000
that will be how it goes for a long time. Humans are optimized for 1 thing, passing on genes. A specialty built robot is always going to be cheaper and more efficient at doing any other task.

You sacrifice efficiency for multi purpose and marketing.

That's exactly my thoughts. Yes, it's not the most efficient to do a particular task, but it probably is more efficient to do many tasks. Jack of all trades, master of none. But I guess I would have went with 3 or 4 legs for stability though
It’s gonna be like a swizz knife of robots. Just upload a program over the air and voila now it can cook and you don’t need to make a cooking robot for that it would cost way too much to create a robot for every need there is.
@@hongliang The best part is no part. You can't have 1 leg or 1 arm so you need 2. You can't have less then 5 fingers otherwise it might not be able to do certain things that humans can. So it has the least amount of limbs possible.

True, our bipedalism weren't that effective 👌🏻
@@thatplat1 Yes, he answered his own question with the preamble.
My thoughts exactly. You can introduce it to your environment without having to install any other hardware.

I disagree mainly because if there were a robot for every task that would be a little bit too ridiculous and on top of that it would be really expensive. I personally think incorporating multiple tasks into one bot would be much more easier and less expensive. To give an example, let’s just say while you were sleeping, you wanted the following tasks:
Laundry (wash, dry, fold)
Clean the kitchen (washing dishes, organizing them in certain cabinets, maybe even sorting out and throwing away expired food in the pantry)
Emptying the trash can
Personally that would be more than sufficient for me.
