0:31 the responder was late cancelling the tones but did eventually just to reactivate them ten seconds later at 0:41 defeating the whole point in cancelling the tones in the first place, no driver is exempt from running reds, what the officer should have done is continued ahead then turned right and gone on his way much faster, what the police and courts think are two different things, police think you should move for them regardless where as the courts say you shouldn't run reds or enter bus lanes etc for them and will prosecute you for it, my advice would be to pass this footage on so the officer can be given words of advice and is told not to try and force drivers to commit offences.
I know people will say "if this was your family bla bla" the responder even if it was a ambulance could have continued ahead and cut right instead they went behind the white car which clearly had no where to go so that's on them, they created the situation by not thinking ahead which is apart of blue light driving, uniformed officers can take control of traffic and direct vehicles but they have to be out the vehicle and in uniform which this officer was sat in his car with no way of judging risk or directing traffic if needed making it dangerous neither did he give any instructions to the driver in front.

The whole "if it were your family" argument I find to be quite, meh... it's one thing for me to decide to go through a light or something in that situation, but I find it unreasonable to expect someone else to do so for me/my family/etc. Unless I want to personally hold the points/fine/punishment that said driver would receive, and if they drive for work (or depend on driving/riding to work), provide an equivalent income for them, that'd be a completely unreasonable expectation for someone else.
On the note of bus lanes, if I recall correctly, there was a guidance video explaining that you should not enter a bus lane (that you wouldn't otherwise be entitled to do so) and should instead leave it clear for the emergency vehicle. Tried that once when a police car came behind me (with active but clear bus lane to the left), and they still moved right anyway... (for that, surely, if you're allowed to stop, and unlike active mandatory cycle lanes, park in bus lanes when not otherwise explicitly prohibited to do so, how is it reasonable to issue fines/PCNs for someone who's only entering the bus lane to allow an emergency vehicle to pass, and immediately vacates it when said vehicle passes?)

@fetchstixRHD It's simple - they want to have it both ways. They want you out of the way, even if it breaks other rules, but they also want to fine you over said other rules. Unless and until the law changes, we have to stick to the letter. Just like they do. No exceptions.

If you are stuck at a red light then you don't have to move for emergency vehicles. They can't force you to drive through a red light. It's illegal to do so and you can be fined. The fine won't be overturned. It's the emergency services drivers job to find a way through traffic, not yours

  • @davidclark1545
    @davidclark1545 7 місяців тому +26

Rule 219 of The Highway Code states:
'You should look and listen for ambulances, fire engines, police, doctors or other emergency vehicles using flashing blue, red or green lights and sirens or flashing headlights, or Highways Agency Traffic Officer and Incident Support vehicles using flashing amber lights. When one approaches do not panic. Consider the route of such a vehicle and take appropriate action to let it pass, while complying with all traffic signs. If necessary, pull to the side of the road and stop, but try to avoid stopping before the brow of a hill, a bend or narrow section of road. Do not endanger yourself, other road users or pedestrians and avoid mounting the kerb. Do not brake harshly on approach to a junction or roundabout, as a following vehicle may not have the same view as you.'
Therefore, as outlined above, if there is an emergency vehicle behind you with its emergency warning signals on, it might be possible for you to manoeuvre out of the way to allow it through. Ideally this should be to the side of the road without encroaching into the main area of the junction (see below). It should only be done when it is safe to do so without putting yourself or other members of the public in danger and it should only be done slowly and carefully.
If you do cross the stop line at the junction whilst the lights are on red, you will commit the offence of contravening a red traffic light. It's important to remember that in committing the offence (crossing the stop line) the onus will be on you to provide evidence that you did so to allow an emergency vehicle through. That may be considered as mitigation, but there is no guarantee that it will be. If the police decide to prosecute you for the offence and you choose to challenge that decision, it will ultimately be a matter for a court to decide.

Firstly well done rider for pulling in to allow the police car to pass. Secondly just looking at this junction, I know this is with hindsight, but as an advanced driver with blue light training, I was extremely surprised to see this police officer choose that move, looking ahead there is very little traffic so he should have kept left and easily have taken the little cut through in the wrong direction. I'm assuming he was reasonably local to the area. I can only imagine it was a decision made in the moment. Oh and also why didn't he go up over the central reservation in the opposing lane? Crossing curbs and obstacles without damaging the wheels or vehicle used to be in the training. As mentioned in other comments here the white car has done nothing wrong in staying at the red light but they should have stopped before that as the siren could clearly be heard, so not helping by being unaware of their surroundings. Ride safe and happy.

Some other European countries allow drivers to go through red lights with caution if an emergency vehicle is being impeded.

@@ThexSvns 1, it's a Police vehicle, not an ambulance or fire engine.
2, the above doesn't matter... as emergency vehicles are told not to sound sirens or encourage vehicles to put themselves in danger (including going through a red light even if it looks clear). If there had been an accident, no matter how slight or small, then the emergency vehicle would be forced to stop and attend... AND the driver going through the red... well they are legally responsible, not the emergency vehicle.

From the West Yorkshire Police website:

The rider could hear the sirens well before the junction. The white car driver should have heard them too and instigated a clear path between the roundabout and junction.... Knowing the light was on red and there wasn't a clear path for the emergency vehicle to pass. It's called thinking ahead.
Yes the emergency vehicle could have stuck to the left, but I'm assuming the emergency vehicle thought the white car would move forward enough to let it pass they got themselves in the way.
Law or not, the white car was ignorant. Made a mistake got in the way, didn't move out of the way.

Consider the position the motorcycle stopped in: as the Zipcar was further ahead (and accelerated faster), and the place they stopped in was quite close to the narrowing (such that if they were in a car/van, they'd have obstructed the path and needed to make space), this is entirely on the police car for suffering from skill issue.
