I have always tried to pass cyclists safely, giving plenty of room, per the highway code. I've NEVER had my overall journey time increased by being behind a cyclist.
Even if you have to wait a minute or two for a safe spot, you'll still inevitably get caught up to the traffic ahead.
So ultimately it's just a bit dumb to endanger someone's life, risk fines, points and potentially a prison sentence, to dangerously overtake.

This is correct: they are not 'blocking the road', they are simply using the road in a way that they are completely entitled to. Slow down. Be patient. Just to note that that cyclist was close to the edge, and I believe the recent Highway Code change entitles them to ride in the middle of the lane. Thing is that if you drive in a city, you lose a lot more time to car traffic than you do bikes, in fact you rarely gain anything from it at all! One less car on your that road, you are effectively one car length further forward in the queue at the next lights if you overtake. Driving in the country can be nice, having to slow down for a moment to wait on a safe opportunity to overtake is nothing, I'd do the same for a slow moving car, and you see a lot of those on weekends and holidays!

@@andrewhanson5942 that makes perfect sense. Originally road maintenance was paid for from a "Road Tax" but the money was often spent on things other than roads, so it was abolished in 1937 and replaced with the system we have now. Although a lot of my fellow Brits, still refer to "excise duty" as road tax.
The British reality is that our roads are funded from central government, and local roads from local government.
We pay taxes local based on were we live and property value. This is then used to fund local services and infrastructure.

I just wait back a reasonable distance until it's safe and then overtake; it's not rocket science. Those bikes are used by people and they have as much a right to be on the road as I do. I've been in the car with people who suffer from 'must get in front syndrome' and they always look stressed which can't be a pleasant way to drive.
Anyway, I leave them distance while I wait as I'm guessing having 1.5 tones of metal right behind you can be intimidating. Plus, my diesel estate can't sound the best either. Plus they are vulnerable and I don't want to have anything to do with them getting injured, like if they hit a spot of oil, their wheel gets caught in a crack in the road, or the like, and they fell over in front of my car...I ain't dealing with that!
Full disclosure, I commute by to work on a bike so I mostly use on-road or protected bike paths so I'm really only at risk from cars if someone turns across me or if someone opens a door on my (neither are fun to be fair). However, I live near the mountains in Dublin and they are massively popular for bike use and I'm not sure I'd save more than a minute or two if I was a gowl and close passed or intimidated them into stopping. Also, I'm guessing it would be far more inconvenient for someone cycling up a hill to stop, lose all momentum and then restart; can't be good for the legs but I've never tried.
