  • Often in the community of fly fishing, you have strong traditionalist opinions that are misplaced and elitist for the sake of making one side feel more superior to the other.
In this video, I head out to a local creek to do some fly fishing for stocked trout. At the end of the video, I talk for a few minutes about the idea of stockers being "inferior" or easier to catch than wild fish and address some controversial things I've seen far too often lately in the fly fishing community regarding this topic.

Fishin for Squirrels... I feel your pain man :-) Thats why I tie 3 of everything. 1 for the tree, 1 for the rock snag and one to actually fish :-) Team Peak Vise as well! Fishin is fishin. as long as you are getting out and enjoying it, who cares if its a stocker or if you used a "Dirty Fly" some of us cant get to wild fish easily and stockers still allow us to catch trout on the fly. Great Vid man! Keep it up!

Almost all of the streams around my area are stocked and many of the ones that are not have good trout population because we have transplanted stocked fish to a non stocked stream. Eventually they reproduce and you get " wild " trout. The non stocked streams would maintain good populations if fewer people killed so many. I've known many, non Flyfishers who kill their limit every day and have two and three hundred trout in their freezers and at the end of the year they throw out 75% of them. WHY? A stream thirty miles from my house is a no kill because of pollution and it has many fish over 20" class because of that reason. Fishing a hand tied fly of ANY pattern is still fly fishing. I know people who think that fishing anything but a dry fly is terrible. We're ALL out there to have fun. Do your own thing and mind your own business.

awesome video man. I've just read some things about how stocking fish harms native fish. It's hard to always fish over native fish. I think if you're out there fishing, good for you. It's not the fishermen fault for what they stock.

Love the video and enjoyed the commentary at the end. What it comes down to at the end of the day… If the purists had fun catching what they catch the way they want to catch it and the rest of us did the same, what difference does it make? Don’t belittle someone who just wants to get out in nature and do something as fun as “go fishing.” Ultimately, that’s what we’re all doing, right? We’re all fishing.

If an angler is following the local and state regs, obeying the rules of etiquette on pressured streams, and leaving no trace....they can fish any way they like with my blessing.

To some people catching a stocked trout is the pinnacle of their entire life.
To others it’s like kissing your sister and enjoying it.
    Do what makes you happy..

The way that i see it. Fly fishing is a hobby, something you should enjoy. If you enjoy throwing junk flies and catching stocked trout (which i do) then by all means do it if it puts a smile on your face. If you only want to chase wild fish, on streams that never see a single stocked fish, more power to you. If anyone says one or the other is wrong, then they themselves are wrong. I personally fish for wilds, stocked, and natives, i dont care. I euro, throw streamers and dry fly. Its about what you can do to have fun, not to make someone else happy.

I fish for stocked trout in the lower Saluda river in SC. Nothing wrong with that. Gives people an opportunity to catch some good table fare or something completely different than they normally would without having to drive three to four hours.

Agreed! Lower saluda is a place we’re very familiar with! The trout have been tough out there this year though. Striper and smallmouth vids coming soon!

Stocked fish only stay stocked for so long. They eventually become holdover fish and adapt. They do not all get caught. Most of the streams where I fish they carry over if they are not caught. I would fish whatever you like and as long as it follows regulations do what you want to do.

Very good video and commentary. I personally love those wild and natives in the smaller creeks but I want people fishing, young, old, men, women, families unplugged and holding rods making memories. I don’t care where or how they do it. As a Veteran with ptsd joining Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing was better than any med or therapy group. If a squirmy wormy is working today then that’s what I’m using. I love the strike on a streamer or the take of a riser on the dry. I’ve got everything in my box and I’ll gladly share with anyone on the river having trouble finding what’s working. The fly fishing museum in Bryson City NC has a nice history of fly fishing in the area and the bottom line is they used what worked. Thanks for the video.

@@SlabDynasty it’s really something to see all the old gear and flies especially ones unique to specific rivers and creeks in western nc. Some made by specific families of fishing legends in the area. It’s worth the stop. Next time you get by this way give me a shout and we’ll chase some down.

isn’t it crazy that somebody would care how somebody else fishes? No different from hunting. If my buddy goes out and shoots a buck with a bow and I shoot a buck with a gun we are just happy for each other. Moral of the story. Do whatever you want and what makes you happy. If you wanna travel the world fishing for every different wild trout there is on traditional flies then go do that. If you wanna go to the spot ten min from your house and fish squirmy worms for stocked fish and it makes you happy… go do that! Thanks for the video.

When I go to visit my buddy in western NC, I'm going to try to get any bite I can, stocked or not. They stock ponds here in the east to let people catch who don't get a chance to fish trout, and they die out in the summer anyway, so minds well catch and keep them even. We took a trip to Cherokee, and it's just so far to drive we definitely caught stockers to make our trip worth it. Elitists and gate keepers are a buzz kill to be around. I'm out here to have fun.

I understand exactly how you feel as far as stocking fish for more opportunities, maybe someone lives in a area where they have to drive hours to fish a class a stream and they can’t always do that but stocking a stream 10 minutes from home gives them that chance to catch a fish and not have to pressure & drive hours to have fun.

Nice video, this is a topic I’ve been very frustrated with as well. Here in eastern Nebraska we have VERY limited opportunity to fly fish for trout. Trout stockings give us that opportunity in the spring/fall. Unless you’re going to the drift less region in northeast Iowa/Wisconsin or the pandhandle of the state/Colorado there is ample opportunity for trout fishing. I’m team stocked trout! Helped get me into fly fishing 👊🏼

That’s awesome to hear man, we also got our start on stocked streams. First time fly fishing was with my grandpa on a delayed harvest stream when I was 10. I caught a 19”er with him and our guide witnessing. One of my greatest memories ever.
