  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. On the brink of shutting down for good, new management at the San Diego Opera made the bold decision to crowd fund their survival by reaching out the community at large for donations. In a classic example of grass roots philanthropy they were able to raise $2.5 million dollars and ensure their future. Exemplifying a musical metaphor for this Chain Reaction of events, Baritone Michael Blinco and Soprano Christen Horne perform the Papageno Papagena Duet from Mozart’s The Magic Flute accompanied by pianist Nicolas Reveles, Director of Education and Community Engagement for the San Diego Opera.
Opera Exposed! is San Diego Opera’s community engagement program, designed to bring opera to communities and neighborhoods who haven’t had the opportunity to experience it. The singers are undergraduates or recent graduates of local university music departments whose major area of study is voice or opera. Nicolas Reveles is the Director of Education and Community Engagement for San Diego Opera.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
