Ep 56 Sailing Solo from Madeira to Bermuda - Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- I head west for what I think will be a 20 day trans-Atlantic passage to Bermuda (on an unusual route, at an unusual time of year - May). Loss of use of the spinnaker coupled with a rapidly descending high pressure zone, adds more than a thousand miles to the adventure.......
“I guess this is my way of challenging that”... couldn’t have said that any better! I was asked almost the same question, “Why do you want to sail around the world?” My answer was, because it scares me and tests me. So keep facing the challenge!
“I guess this is my way of challenging that”. What an inspiration. Thanks for this Patrick.
Keep challenging that.
That was quite the amazing answer that I think resonates in a lot of us. Love you Patrick
@@georgelupont9976 Great muse from Patrick...["Something's Lost and something's is gained by LIVING every Day." ... From the song,"Clouds got in my Way"..]
Parce que, Because... You are the coolest dude. Speaking French, hiding lyrics in your videos, and conquering an ocean alone. Fair winds voyageur!
Thanks for the kind feedback as. This is a lot of fun (for an old guy).
Keep challenging life's progress Patrick - do not stop until you have to - I do it in a sea kayak, but the means do not matter, your intent does. Inspirational..
Patrick, you are such a fantastic sailor and storyteller. I must also say, besides excellent camera work, you, a master captured just the right sound of the waves and the gurgling sound of your stern - it feels like I'm on board with you. No silly background music, just you and the ocean. Thanks for that. Cheers.
Thanks for the very nice feedback Sgt bond. Far too kind.
Great for us guys who had to swallow the anchor.
@patricklaine6958 hi Patrick ,fantastic adventures that you are having, I have a quick question, why did you change from your Bavaria?
An appropriate quote for you all
on... Good sailing.."To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise, you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen who play with their boats at sea..."cruising" it is called.Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change.Only then will you know what the sea is all about. "'I've always wanted to sail to the south seas, but I can't afford it." What these men can't afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of "security." And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine and before we know it our lives are gone. What does a man need really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in -and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That's all- in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade.
The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed. Where, then, lies the answer? choice.! "Which shall it be: bankruptcyof purse or bankruptcy of life...?
Sterling Hayden
How true ,known to many but ignored by few .
"There's a feeling I get when I look to the west .." - Led Zepplin :) Nice reference Patrick, so glad to see you are still pushing your personal envelope, long may you continue. Wishing you fair winds sailor !
There are at least two lyrical references ... maybe more! 'Me up on my pony on my boat' - Lyle Lovett ... and I haven't finished the video yet!
The ocean is wild and over your head
And the boat beneath you is sinking
Don't need room for your bags, hope is all that you have
So say the Lord's Prayer twice, hold your babies tight
Surely someone will reach out a hand
And show you a safe place to land
Patrick, you are living the dream. You are in paradise; these are the best years of your life. I hope to see you out there one day my friend.
I was thinking about the fuel filter change during poor conditions. Isn't it an idea to have a filter in parallel, so you can just switch filters by switching 2 3-way valves in front and behind the filters?
Your vlogs are refreshing to watch amid the drama and music soundtrack din of the majority of sailing channels. Always something to glean from your escapades.
Far too kind MC. Much appreciated.
„I guess it’s my way of challenging that“. What a great way to end part 1
@Patrick Laine have you seen Sailing Yacht Florence's setup for Spinakker? They use a ratchet block for the sock line. In this way the Spinnaker will not try to pull you off the boat, when douching the Spinnaker with the sock. At 9:10 ua-cam.com/video/SKiTbcXi3tQ/v-deo.html
It's always a delight to see that you've [posted a video. They never disappoint, Thank you.
Wait..wha'?..is it true that Monsieur Laine is the secret and missing member of...Led Zeppelin?..yes, well be that as it may be..the piper will all lead us all to reason...
It NEVER goes by unless you forget those times. As long as we keep the ones we lost and the days of happiness in our hearts, there is nothing to feel sorrow. Love and enjoy your videos a lot.
Wish you always fair winds sir.
You are my hero. You know how to enjoy life. When you lost the spinnaker … you had an outstanding attitude. Congratulations for another amazing video.
Félicitations !!! Congratulations !!!
I can say that your last words describe also the way I feel and why I decided to pursue more sailing. Great to see you out there Patrick. Fair winds
Wonderful work. It is good to avoid unnecessary risks when you are alone in the middle of the Atlantic. Your bad luck is like story of my life, but that doesn’t stop you. That doesn’t make you turn around. But what’s the story of taped toilet seat?
Starting a voyage with a Led Zeppelin quote - you never fail to surprise me Patrick. Looking forward to this series immensely.
And then he finishes it with a Bonnie Tyler one.
Merci Monsieur Laine. I'm glad you are again out at sea and sharing your adventure with us. And let me tell you, you are doing a fine job. Muito obrigado.
I’m 51 and I get that feeling often that maybe the best years have gone by. Or more accurately I want to ensure the best years are in the future. And that’s why I’ve chosen to sail the world soon. I found a fabulous wife that’s going to accompany me on that journey. Our business is close to being built that will fund the adventure. Thank you for your videos. I sailed a couple times in boy scout summer camp so I’m depending on UA-cam videos to learn, as silly as that sounds. I’ve already learned much about the craft in a short time watching you and I appreciate your calm demeanor when experiencing difficult circumstances. Hopefully I can model the same behavior and stay above water. Cheers.
Where do you store the Château Nerf De Pap?
Thank you for that Patrick, always good content and I really enjoy your thought process when things go wrong.
Stay safe matey.
With a little Led Zeppelin right at the start...this is going to be wonderful.
Yep, spot on mate. We all look that devil in the eye. I'm closer to the end than the beginning and trying hard not to let the old man in.
What are you doing to stay "young?"
Patrick I have followed your journey from the very beginning and really the only word to some up this latest trip is “Inspirational”.
All the best Richard SV_Zonda
As a Rigger i would never have the Spinnaker reeved thru the fairlead that came off the mast, that fairlead is used on a roller furler so that the halyard that hoisted the swivel does not wrap around the fore stay if it is parallel with the forestay, the spinnaker halyard should be run thru a swivel block attached to a crane attached to the top of the mast.
I've just discussed this with the local Selden people. The fairlead was poorly engineered/attached, but not a bad idea. It is a fractional rig, and in addition, the top of the mast did not have a swivel block --- so the floating spinnaker would definitely result in chafe on the halyard, which would eventually end in tears. They will install a much better set-up for me.
You could be gardening in Saskatchewan, waiting for rain and didn’t make a choice to get sailing.
I think it commendable what you are doing. Really enjoy your sailing, commentary& thoughts. You have my vote to stay the course as you can, as long as you can. 🍀🌏👌
Quite the adventure you have undertaken.
I envy the journey.
What else should you have done Patrick,,,,,, sit down in a chair somewhere watching the rest of your life to pass bye.... dont worry the armchair has killed more dreamers than exploring has ever done. Keep doing your thing for as long as the gain balances the catch.
Thanks for bringing an inspiration. Best regards from Jarle
Not only do we get a new video from Patrick but its a 2 parter and no waiting for the 2nd part!
Today is a good day!
How much wind when your spinnaker failed? Im curious why your spinnaker has a guide when a spinnaker halyard is usually at the top. My sail maker told me 16kts and below for my cruising gennaker.
...with my modest english, i also got "i guess my best years gone by, and this is my way of challenging that". Interesting point of view Patrick. Also interesting that route from Madeira. Cheerio to life Patrick, and, as ever, Fair Winds
Très bien fait. J'adore les commentaires et la représentation réaliste de la vie à bord. J'attends avec impatience la suite. 👍
Patrick on a french based boat, should the two big boxes not be red and white wine? ;) Great video and thanks for the tour. Fair winds!
I never showed the internal contents of those boxes........ ;-)
@@patricklaine6958 c’est vrai!
I like that you seem to keep the boat upright most times, I spend a lot of time practicing setup and trimming to keep it flat, I find it fast and comfortable.
Patrick you are awesome !!!! I do love your videos and your attitude. Congratulations !!!!
May not be as cozy as Isabella but wow, such a faster boat! Tough nails for the spinnaker. I would have been thinking about a workaround for DAYS and probably would have lost sleep over it.
Hi , your amazing adventures are so full of planning and if what,s along the way . You take it all in your stride and jog on to your destination . Fair winds Patrick . Thank you for the video .👍
hi.thank u for letting me learn. u said before, that use ipad, but now i see u use samsung tablet. may u explain why?
I use them both interchangeably -- whichever one is nearest when I want it. They have the same nautical apps on them: Iridium GO, Predict Wind and Navionics.
Hi Patrick, what is the idea taping the toilet ? dont you use it?. Always love to see your videos..
I don't use it. This boat heels a great deal ---- 20-35 degrees all the time, which greatly reduces the utility of such a toilet at sea. It is taped because the rear hinge on the cover is broken and will not stay on otherwise. Those 'round the world' guys and gals use a bucket also.....
New to sailing myself, I find your videos give me insight into the world of sailing. I appreciate your honesty also, given your tremendous experience and yet you still have 'more to learn' and make 'mistakes'. Many thanks for posting.
56th LIKE from a desktop phantom shipmate. Bummer to lose you big helper... how much difference is the comfort of the ride with less speed now?
Thanks for sharing, and taking us along for the journey. Cheers.
My motto is "When you can...do" because the day will come when you can't.....sail on Patrick....
Hey Patrick, I really enjoyed watching this video!!! I will look for more. Thanks and take care!!!
If you ever need crew, I will stop my Westsail 32 refit and come join you. I have the nautical miles and a passport.
I am 70 Patrick, and I understand. Thank you, again; it is inspiring to watch your sailing videos.
Your comment at the end of your video "... your way of challenging that." was great and heartfelt of me too. It's not over until it's over.
Thanks for taking us along.
Hey Patrick, I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway, Would you rather be having a good day at work, or would you rather have a challenging day sailing & dealing with uncooperative weather & unscheduled boat maintenance? :D
thanks for sharing your great footage, and thoughts about sailing and live🙏🏻 have a save journey and looking forward to next episode. Cheers from Martin 🇩🇰
"Bent but not broken, on the longest transalantic crossing since Christopher Columbus". There's a song lyric in there. Somewhere :-)
Me and my pony on my boat 🍺. Hey hey my my there's more to the picture than meets the eye.
Patrick...your friend of 30 years doesn't realize exactly who you are ....I also feel the same..62 this month and come hell or high water .
My ass is not going to be sitting in some chair waiting for death to show up .....woooh haàaa
Your answer should have been
Cause I can !!!!!!
Keep it up !!!!!!
Fairwinds from the @captains.chair
I think the question is more than why do you do it, but why this particular method? Here you are on a boat like Alessia instead of, say a 42 foot catamaran with five or six good friends. Then I hear you drop mention of " ... "I have a really good friend..." and "...Jester Challenge" ... Hmm, it's starting to make sense.
Gerald (SV Doucema) again - thanks, lots of very useful information about this route (and great story) ; exactly this trip is planned for coming May - you mention other sources of information about this passage; so far yours is the only one I found - could you help pls ? allbest Gerald
In previous episode, you said you didn’t know where to go…I felt you had something extraordinary up your sleeve…and you did👍U’re a great inspiration. ⛵️
Hey Patrick if you come into North Carolina and South Carolina you have free use of our boat slip and all the club amenities. NC is approximately 800 miles from Bermuda. And we would be happy to host you! Look us up!
Wait a minute! That's not a Bavaria! I clearly have some catching up to do ... Great video, Patrick. Many thanks.
“We are not broken, just bent”. Is that a reference to “just give me a reason” by Pink and Fun.? If so, Patrick got some amazing taste in music!
Maybe it’s a saying that was before the song?!
YES!! Definitely needed this. Keep pushing Patrick, and thank you. Fair winds!🍷
I love your way to be at sea 😊! Thanks a lot for sharing all these very learning informations. Maybe you will find the way to answer but precisely I am looking for your solar panel fixation 😋😋.
Gotta love Lyle Lovett
Ay Captain do you have a RTL-SDR on board so you can download weather charts? If not they are inexpensive about EUR 30 and the downloads are free. We're all with you on these challenges and you inspire all of us. Thank you for sharing!
No I don't. Just the iridium go. I probably should get one as a back-up......
Patrick always a joy to watch your you tube channel and commentary of your voyages. Please keep up the great work!
Hi Patrick. I alway love listening for your lyrical shout outs. Led Zeppelin and Pink in the same episode. You've outdone yourself. Safe travels.
You missed two that I can remember. :-) you're slowing down!
It won't let me give a like! Oops there it went! I don't mean to sound rude because I am impressed at any solo sail. But may I ask how old your young self is? Because I am 58 and you are stomping me in energy and adventure!
I just wanted to say that I'm proud of you. Fair winds, Patrick.
Finally, a sailor! I am sick of these condo cats. Pimping out their woman and begging for your money.
Time sucks the life out of all of us. All we can do is use what remains to be best purpose. You are showing us the way that's done. Fair winds, shipmate.
Great to see you making another long passage! Looking forward to the next episode.
Hi, it’s Nick and Jan from La Rochelle,,fair winds to you
Hello Patrick, you inspired me to learn to sail. I am far away from crossing oceans but I wil get there 🙂 Thanks, also for the great content.
“Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by. And I guess this is my way of challenging that.” ~Patrick Lane
That is the best reply that comes to my mind, which as I get older seems to spring more and more leaks, that I can recall. Thank you for putting it so perfectly Patrick. I've been watching your videos for several years, we, we've been watching them, my soon to be wife and I. If you make it over to the USA, into the Chesapeake Bay, we would love to buy you dinner and beverages of your choice somewhere.
Chesapeake was on my original plan John. (I went to school in Annapolis.) However, the initial passage took much longer than planned, so Plan B, direct to Newfoundland, interceded. Maybe next year........
You have an amazing way with words Patrick! Thanks so much for sharing
Keep an enema kit.. its useful for retained Enemas especially when its not easy to find urgency..
You are inspiring, both from your adventures of course but also your restrained character of form and style at all time.
Happy to see 'part 1' in the title.
It may sound stupid but after watching your video I must say you’re my hero 😄
Best luck for what’s left of your journey. And take care: we love your videos.
Far too kind SO. Much appreciated.
When I saw those two cases, I thought maybe some wine, dehydrated food somehow does not sound so appealing.
brave man, great sailor, good luck. btw what is this yacht?
Impressive solo sailing. The maintenance never ends. Thank you for the video
Sailors are just a ballsy lot. No other way to put it. Ballsy and courageous. You better be, or the sea will eat you up.
Did you change boat? Didn't you have a Bavaria 42 before?
I have to ask Patrick, "Do you miss the creature comforts of Isabelle?"
I certainly would John. I loved Isabelle. I suspect the preformance of the newer boat outweighs creature comforts.
Love the new glasses, your looking a bit like Walter Cronkite.
Very inspirational, as usual. Do you miss your Bavaria? That was a nice boat, but maybe not as challenging…
I'll discuss the Bavaria change in the last leg of this adventure. Thanks for watching,
Staying young one ocean passage at a time. Don't buy a couch, you'll just lay on it.
Keep up the challenge Patrick. Age is just a number!.
“I guess this is my way of challenging that” Well said ✌🤙
Would love to know your mapshare link to follow your journey. Garmin is about to release a 67 i, I’m considering switching from my Montana 750 i to the 67i just released. I’d be happy to sell you my Montana if you are interested
Those new Garmin products look quite interesting Jared. I still have and use the basic Garmin InReach for its tracker feature. I get all other info (GRIB weather, email, etc.) from the Iridium GO. Think I'll stick with that system for the near future. Fair winds.
Kudos. That would be my idea of hell and I would be constantly terrified. Amazing. Thanks
Hi Patrick, great post. I love how you approach the route. Great. Good luck.
Best regards, Micha.
No ice bergs here. Boring for you. ;-)
“I guess this is my way of challenging that”. BINGO! After 20 years of not sailing...just bought a boat.....gearing up. I'm 62 and ready to rock. Hope to have a beer someday...somewhere down the line.
Great Rush. I learned the basics of sailing in a one week course when I was 18, and then did not sail again until I was 64 (when I started these videos). Go for it.
Hello Patrick - regarding your AIS warning system, aren’t concerned about boats without AIS transponders?
Not really Nicolay. It's true that close to the coast there are small fishing boats and recreational sailors who do not use AIS, but once you get about 20 NM from the coast, it is very, very rare for a ship/boat not to have AIS. They are required to have it, either by law, or by their insurance companies. Good question.
Nice to see you sailing again.change bavaria? This is less weight?
As always really interesting and also very jealous.
Are you missing your old boat yet, it looked a lot more nicer and comfy?
I'll discuss that on the final leg of this year's adventure. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Patrick, what an inspiring trip. You mentioned that you are a friend of John Willis. So we have a mutual friend. If you pass by the Azores, let me know. I‘m currently on Santa Maria. Best, Ronald
John is one of the great written bloggers (a fading art unfortunately). He has now shifted gears away from sail to motoring, but am sure he will enjoy some great adventures doing that.
Just found your Channel again Patrick after more than a Year...will now follow your Exploits and Challenges more closely as you really are very Generous with your Time explaining where when and How you are going ...Top Sailing Points To you 👍
Welcome back Jeremy and thanks for the kind feedback.
