19 | Sailing The Yasawa Islands of Fiji

- Setting sail in our classic wooden boat, we cross nearly the entire breadth of Fiji to cruise in the Yasawa Islands. Leaving the lush forested island of Makogai, we sail the famous Bligh Waters to the drier leeward side of the Island group. In the Yasawa and Mamanuka islands we find friendly villages and spectacular coral reefs.
With the seasons changing, we start to think about another big ocean passage, looking to find safer latitudes to ride out the hurricane season.
Julia is a traditional wooden boat, built of cedar and fir on oak frames. She was built in 1960 to the Ingrid design by William Atkin. Her tender is built skin-on-frame to the Annabelle design by Dave Gentry.

Love your blue water vessel. With its wide decks, lots of handholds, small cockpit and low cabin top it is a proper blue water sailing vessel.
Your videos have a nostalgic quality reminiscent of when travellogs were produced with film.
This and the slow pace leave the viewer left with a feeling of living a life that was missed there our own lives.

Have you ever tried the old sailors and settlers trick on preserving fresh produce? A cup of white vinegar in a washing up bowl of water then let your veg, fruit air dry it was what was used, vinegar was used on everything, cleaning etc. I do it on my fruit berries and veg, everything lasts for weeks in my fridge, there’s no taste. When you look at the old manifest lists of the quartermasters boarded they took gallons, as much as wine, rum and beer. In pandemics the settlers would scrub their cabins. Lovely on Plantain fries too! Fair winds.

As I watch you use your tools for navigation, I can see that it is so nice with modern tech to not worry about winding up in the middle of nowhere without knowing which way to go, or missing an island because of a slight course error. Avoiding bad weather is easier too. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure. The views above and below the surface are amazing.

Such a beautiful boat as the star of the videos with beautiful people to co-star makes your videos so different from the other sailing channels I also follow. A wood boat with wood masts and a rowing/sailing dinghy takes me back to my cruising days long ago.

This channel is so life affirming. I built a wooden sailboat (just a skiff, really) with my father about 50 years ago, and I miss it. Watching your channel has inspired me to charter a wooden sailboat for a short cruise in England in September. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for posting this. It brings me back to a lot of memories. I lived in Fiji from 6years old to 18 years old. I am on my own 42foot sloop rigged boat on Bainbridge Island these days with the ultimate goal of eventually making it back to Fiji for some exploring as an adult.
