EP 57 Solo Sail Bermuda to St Pierre, France

  • I sail a 1000 NM passage in fairly sporty conditions from Bermuda to two small French islands off the southern coast of Newfoundland (St Pierre et Miquelon). I discuss/demo my technique for putting in a reef while headed downwind (and welcome ways to improve). As I approach Newfoundland, an aggressive front arrives at the same time, and rather than argue with mother nature, I hove to (park at sea) for 18 hours.

Staying alert, well fed, hydrated and in good physical shape should be right at the top of your list and everyone else in "our" age group. Hello Patrick, I have two ideas for you. The lazy jack lines along your main sail are hanging around. Open the system, put the lines around a clamp at the mast and tighten them. No more hanging around, no more noisy sounds from them…… when you need them just open them again. Second safety Idea for all solo sailors. The furler line stowed over the reeling, do it always the other way around, so when you grab it not from the outside, no from the inside from the cockpit. You donˋt have to lean over. Cheers Anthony

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  10 місяців тому

      It's actually done that way to avoid turning back up into the wind/seas to reef. It looks messy, but it beats getting soaked and bouncing around like a cork when turning back into the wind. On my new boat, I have a square top sail. I can't reef it when headed downwind because the top of the sail catches too much wind and flops over into the spreader. I really miss being able to reef downwind. :-(

      I decided to wait until the work can be done/inspected by riggers at home with whom I have worked for 6 years now. In crossing the N Atlantic east-bound, I don't think there will be a lot of use of the spinnaker anyway, so not a big deal. Fair winds.

    So, your second reef line to the clew is from a point forward on the boom but then after passing through the cringle it is lead all the way to the outhaul position! Apparently you are happy with the shape you achieve with this so, I'll have to try it. I thought it would result in a compromise angle of pull so mine is a two stage process of reffing line down to the boom and a separate outhaul hooked to the clew and tightened.

    Great vlog of the passage Patrick. Reefing the main when downwind is fine in a smaller craft and lighter breezes. I always found it helped to ease the main sheet, harden the topping lift then haul in the main sheet. Then when you wind in the reefing line you don't have to fight unnecessary pressure as the new cringle comes easily onto the boom. Best wishes, John.

    So you have a downhaul attached to your main, and that way you’re pulling it down? But no! That has to be the reef line you’re winching on with such effort that comes from the cringle along the leach of the main - what a lot of tugging it takes!

    Hi Patrick
    Thanks for another understated video of your sailing achievements and also for the sailing route suggestions you covered it very quickly
    Mentioning tools self sufficiency etc You said you have a Volvo engine presumably you know the mdi units have had a history of failing and if it’s a sail drive with the flexible coupling to engine that’s worth checking maybe carrying a spare mdi could be an addition to the toolbox Not that you really need to use the engine
    Enjoy

      Yes, the Volvo MDIs have a terrible reputation, and I'm an idiot for not having bought a spare before leaving on this adventure.

    You took enough spares to build an entire new boat 😁. I'm the same, I'd rather have enough of something I may never need than get caught without the one thing I do need.

      Ha! Yeah. In a future video I say that in my entire circuit of the North Atlantic, I used a screwdriver once and a needle nose pliers once. That said, if I had to do it again, I'm sure I would carry the same tools. :-)

    Nothing wrong with your reefing technique. It seems gentler on the sails than the close haul technique. However, I noticed your lifeline is quite long. Check the interview with John Kretschmer in the latest edition of Sailing Zingaro. No way not to drown if you are pulled along in the water at more than 2 knots.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I know it is too long. Offsetting that is the fact that I almost always try to go forward on the upwind side of the boat (so will fall the long way to lee). I have tried shorter tethers, but it gets frustrating (and dangerous) very quickly when you have to unclip to have 20 cm more reach......

      @@patricklaine6958 Great video as usual . As lifeline, I run 2 lines from the mast pole ring to the aft pushpits, on both sides, and attach my tether to that. Doing so, the line is shorter and remains much higher than deck level , actually at waist level, and much safer if you fall.

Im pretty sure I saw Sam Holmes use one & had it hanging like a lantern! it does have a lid. I've just bought one they're about $300au but I'm yet to try it out.
