Ep 60 Sailing 'North' in my new boat

- I provide a tour of my new boat, an RM 890+ named 'Jenna' after my two daughters. I cast off lines for destinations North, and cross some AIS equipped fishing buoys along the way, before reaching my first intermediate destination of Dingle Ireland.

A cross-laminated plywood boat. At least here in Finland there have been such boats since 1970. Today they are rare. There is only 1 flaw in the construction material that is worth remembering, never break the frame either by yourself or because of someone else. Repairing cross-laminated plywood is really laborious, or even impossible. Fortunately, you are sailing in deep waters and not here in the Finnish archipelago. it is worth coming here, the archipelago is absolutely wonderful and there are plenty of service ports, but there are also natural ports if you want to be at peace. The sea freezes in winter, so we docked the boats, but from May to September there is great sailing weather
Finland is on my bucket list. Perhaps adfter the war......
A man who flew carrier deck landings at night in combat is nervous of the TSS shipping in the dark. Tells you all you need to know about paying attention at sea.
The way I see it, any venture with risk, that can lead to one’s demise, is enough to make me nervous

When the title said "North", I got excited and thought you're coming north, as in Finland. I assume you know Laine is a Finnish surname. If you ever have the chance to experience the Finnish Archipelago between Åland and Turku in the summer, you should. It comprises thousands of islands, small island communities - a world of its own, unlike anything you'll see anywhere else in the world. Completely unique.
I was tempted to go there, but due to the conflicts in the region decided to wait until a calmer period. Maybe next year ! :-) In the meantime, I was entertained by Norway's 325,000 islands.

Great new boat -- glad you decided to bring your camera on this voyage, and as a result added us as crew. Glad to be aboard. I had not heard of AIS on fishing lines ... sounds like a great idea. I have seen AIS targets on bridges and buoys so it's no surprise that additional uses are being found for them.
While discussing AIS I thought I'd tell you something I found out a few years ago, and have confirmed that it is still the case. Raymarine MFD's (we have an Axiom Pro) have a limit of 100 targets -- displaying the closest 100 it detects. On San Francisco Bay there are many AIS units and easily more than 100 near me. I listen to VTS (vessel traffic service) while in the central Bay and if I hear of a ship that might be an issue for me I look for it on the AIS. Sometimes they don't show up because there are more than 100 AIS targets nearer to me. But large ships travel fast and .... anyway, on my latest communications with Raymarine a couple weeks ago they did say that they are looking at increasing that limit. Couldn't be soon enough for me. Apparently other systems also have limits, read of one that is 240 targets.
You very likely know of this limit, but thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't run into it yet. The mention is buried in the middle of the Lighthouse manual.

What a wonderful surprise! I seriously missed your videos. Thank you for adding another one to the collection. Your journeys definitely helped me to decide that I will buy a sailing boat after retiring. Unfortunately in Germany we work until 67, so for me it is another five years to wait.
I happily will add another word for the "white caps" encyclopedia: in German language they're called foam crowns (Schaumkronen).

The drifting nets are a mess, definitely without an AIS. Fishermen are to the seas what hunters are to the woods: trash....Oh no, sorry: regulators and correctors of the natural equilibrium. Almost slipped over that one.

Your RM is one lovely yacht and I wish you plenty of enjoyment with her! I gather from your comment on the exposed rudders that yours is not a twinkeeler.
Regarding building material, don't forget to have some epoxy or paint ready in case you scratch through to the wood, and do a quick repair, otherwise the water will seep in.
Perhaps of interest, Bepox made some really nice sailboats in the past using a similar construction technique.

Yeah, my boat is single fin keel, though this model also comes with two keels. I'm told that the extra keel costs about 0.6-0.7 kts.
@@patricklaine6958 Hi Patrick, on a reach the single keel probably planes better, on a beat the twin keeler is probably stiffer... I sail a twinkeel Roland design, and upwind it is very fast, faster than its single keel bretheren, but downwiind it is slower. In the end the pros and cons depend on the intended sailing program.

Welcome back, Patrick. I don't think I've ever heard you explain why it's always about the North Atlantic...and the northern part of North, at that. Or perhaps you've sailed further south and I have just missed it. Above 40 it's always cold. 🤒
Welcome back Patrick, your a great inspiration to me. I had the pleasure of bumping into you 4 years ago at Pwfellhi just as I was about to start the Baltimore Jester Challenge. I’m also heading North to 61.50N this summer so hopefully paths will cross again. Fair winds.
I remember meeting you there (at the club restaurant), but you modestly did not tell me you were about to do the challenge. I wanted to participate also, but the boat I had at time was 40', so didn't really meet the criteria. Bravo to you.

Love your boat. If I wasn’t in to catamarans I would be lusting after one…(though they do cost as much as my house..not ready to sell the wife just yet! )
My catamaran also is epoxy ply, though home built..perhaps not as well as yours. I have to be very careful not to let any water sit in the bilge…if it soaks in it don’t dry out quite as readily.
All for the open stern. Any one who has surfed will know that , in fact, a buoyant stern is not what you want ruin big waves - the stern gets picked up and the wave smashes you into the next one…broach ahoy!. That said maybe webbing across, rather than wire, and perhaps some netting. I note you are concerned about snagging the rudders, shame they are not stern hung, ideally kick up - a small speed advantage soon lost when you spend an hour or two disintangling from a lobster pot.
One thing you did not mention is whether she is single or twin keel. Personally I would go twin, being able to take the ground, either intentionally or not.
Beautiful light airy interior…hope those big windows don’t start leaking too soon.
Such an open interior is obviously not designed for high latitude sailing, some division between the wet area - companion way / cooking / toilet/ wet locker, and the cosy dry heated space would help, even if just a curtain.
From what i see there seems to be no consideration to dividing the space into watertight compartments, in case of a hull breach. This could be achieved by, at the bow raising the bulkhead to the v berth. At the stern, similar at the toilet door and rear cabin. These would be temporary arrangements.
But all said, a beauty, and quite fast. (Richard Woods, designer and sailor of fast cruising catamarans, says it is not worth exceeding 5kts when cruising, much more pleasant to take your time) And a good size for a solo sailor, so many folk get led into something too big.

Appreciate the mooring part of the video. Doesn't matter it is the wrong side, exciting as always. Could you start it a little bit soner next time, maybe 1/4 of a mile before the jetty ?
Yeah, I always turn on the camera for the entire port entrance, but it is really pretty boring to watch a long entrance at 2.5 kts. I'll give it some more thought.

I live in Maine and have sailed a boat off the coast many times and it certainly is a challenge in the warmer months avoiding the lobster bouys for sure. Winter is not as bad due to the lobsters moving further off shore and not as many lobster bouys near the coast.
Yeah, I had intended to sail the Maine coast last year, but I just could not risk an incident with my unprotected rudders while solo. Kevin Boothby does it without thinking about it. :-)

Hello Patrick, I've been following your channel for quite some time, admiring your sailing skills and wisdom. It's been a while without any new video from you. I hope you are doing well, planning new adventures or just sailing now and then around La Rochelle. Take care and do remember to post an update now and then. We're all eagerly waiting for it.
Thanks for asking M. All is well and I am sailing regularly. I am just giving my GoPro a rest as I have run dry on new things to show or say, and I don't want to go down the bikini or "drama" route. Only 60% of my subscribers watched my Iceland to Norway passage, so I guess they are getting tired of my format also. I leave again on a major (for me) adventure in April -- and may pick up the camera again then if I get inspired.

That is one of their 'selling points" --- both winchs forward so you can operate them while semi-protected by the spray hood. Very nice.

Welcome back Roy. People are astonished by my long distance passages, but by FAR, 100-150 nm solo coastal passages are much more difficult due to all of the risks that you know very well. Bravo.

Good to see you back out on the water again and in yet another new boat at least the RM has a few more creature comforts. You make these long passages look like a stroll in the park. We are planning to cruise from Poole to Southern Brittany and beyond 🤞in a few weeks and you certainly help giving us the confidence to cross Biscay. I'm sure your passages are not all a stroll in the park but you certainly portray them as such in your cool laid-back way
